Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

That would be great, thanks. It'll be nice to get posts that are actually relevant to the topic.
I picked up the Halo Wars guide today. It was the first time this week I had been to a Gamestop. So I don't know exactly when it pennied. But it is a penny. Sorry for the confusion.
 I was at a GS last night that had Halo Wars in stock but I didn't know it was pennied. It must have dropped on Wed/Thurs since GS usually pennies guides on those days (I think). I did notice several copies still in stock on Tuesday when I went to pick up some pre-orders.
I picked up today at Gamestop the following...

Tomb Raider Underworld
Grand Theft Auto IV
Godfather II
Star Ocean: First Depature
Halo Wars
It's rare to see the GTA4 guide in stock at either GS or BB (in my area). I guess it just took too long to penny out. I'll take a look later on today and see if I can find anything. Thanks.

I can confirm Tomb Raider Underworld and Godfather 2. Most likely dropped on Thur since GS usually drops Tues through Thur and never Fri.

Well, it seems as if we have conflicting reports on this drop, so I'm going to hold off on updating the second and third posts until we get a concrete confirmation on everything that's been listed as having dropped.

I can confirm Halo Wars. Checked at 3 stores and they told me it pennied out and it was sent back to manufacturer. So if anyone gets extras I got lots of guides for trade for it :)

I asked this in the discussion forum, but there hasn't been a post there in a while:

Do you have to be 17 to buy a guide for a game that's rated "M"?

For Best Buy, no. GS & Blockbuster do ask for your birthdate.

GTA IV and Metal Gear 4 are Full Price at GS.

I also went to game crazy today and noticed a number of giuides are now half price or less. Metal Gear Hardcover was 14.99 or 9.99.

YMMV for Best Buy. I've been carded at times for M-Rated guides, recentely for Wolverine.

yup, not carded but ask my birthday on most m guides

Grabbed a Pokemon 10 Year Anniversary Hard cover guide, Infinite Discovery, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IV at my local GC today. Employee was ultra cool and let me just pick what I wanted. He kept one guide - WOW Atlas (which was REALLY nice), but I couldn't complain, since he was cool about the other guides...

Apologies for going off topic, but there was a guide made for Final Fantasy VI??????? I always thought that one was mysteriously left out.

My bad - that would be VII - Crisis Core

Are you talking about the GBA remakes? No they did not make a guide for that one. They made guides for 1&2, 4, and 5 but didn't make one for 6. I believe it was because the GBA was on life support when 6 came out. In fact it was one of the very last (non-crap) GBA games released in February 2007, had a low print run, and now sells for a premium on Amazon and Ebay (especially complete).

I was going to mention for you guide collectors out there that the Fallout 3 Game of the Year Collector's Edition guide is up for pre-order at Amazon. It showed up in my Goldbox for $21 and I went ahead and ordered it. Not even close to a penny guide however as many of you know the original Fallout 3 guide is somewhat hard to find and the cheapest on Amazon is $34 shipped for a used copy by a private seller. The original collector's edition guide is a used copy with no poster and moderate wear for $39 shipped on Amazon. These make the $21 ($23 for Non-Goldbox) shipped for a brand new collector's edition seem like an absolute bargain. The collectors edition has the 2 mini DLC guides (which also retail $13 each) rolled into one massive guide. This is definitely one to consider as the Oblivion GOTY guide also had a similar situation on price and availability and was not one that many people were able to get for a penny or trade for.
Here is a link http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Game-...=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253479111&sr=8-6
This "guide" is more of a bible with 768 pages, a hardbound cover, and is a limited numbered release.

Good call, that's not bad considering everything it covers for around $20.

Have we reached agreement as of yet as to what is and isn't pennied as of this latest drop at Gamestop?

I'm just wondering, since the only guide that everybody seems to agree that dropped is Halo Wars.

im in search of the afro samurai, prototype, and gears of war 2 game guide. it seems like some hoarders raided my gs, gc, and eb. mang, if anyone gots some deals on it, let me know, il be happy to consider a deal and possible take them off your hands.

I don't have physical confirmation, but Tomb Raider Underworld and Godfather II being off the website, I think they are safe to add to the list. The only questionable one that I'm aware of is GTA4.
Hmm - does this mean we might see a GOTY release for Fallout 3 before Christmas?
Wait, hasnt it already been confirmed to come out before Christmas? Amazon says Oct. 13th

What about this message though?
I just scanned TR Underworld and GTA IV at 2 GSs here in Richmond Va and theyre full price.
I got Underworld and GF II on Fri, but it could've dropped on Thur. I just picked it up from my manager friend on Fri. GS is supposed to penny guides in order to clear up shelf space for new ones, so maybe they have a way to track inventory related to store size and penny out accordingly. My store is very small compared to other stores.

Scored a Tales of Vesperia guide today. They had plenty other penny guides (FF7C: FF12, Umbrella Chronicles), so that was awesome.

I picked up Tomb Raider Underworld yesterday and it rang up as a penny. I'm thinking the guy just lied to Richard.

We had a store here that would always say "oh wow, it rang up a penny, but if you want to buy it we have to manually adjust the price back up to the sticker price". Needless to say, I stopped going to that store.

Best Buy = Pikmin, RE5LE, PoPLE, left 4 dead so far.
Grab them shits!!
Also Fallout 3 Collectors Edition DID NOT DROP.

also, fear 2. and fire emblem. (I'm posting like a tard cause the computer at work logs me out after a short while so I'll keep editing this post as I find more penny guides)

Mirrors Edge Hardcover.

Oh good it appears for the first time my store pulled all the guides on me.

Nice, my store is packed to the gills with those!

No regular POP? My store has so many copies of that and Star Wars TFU that I figured they'd penny for sure.

My search for penny guides has been an epic fail. Hit 2 Best Buys, 4 Gamestops and a Toys R Us this weekend and didnt find a single guide. The final Gamestop I went to had both a Metal Gear Solid and Bioshock guide but they both rang up full price.

Interesting tidbit: When I brought up the Bioshock guide, the guy working the counter said "I think that guide is pennied". Pretty interesting to hear him use that term. When it rang up full price, he told me "Come back and check it every now and then, it should be a penny soon". The kid was pretty cool.

Wasn't Bioshock supposed to be pennied already? I was excited and then got the wind knocked outta me.

I can confirm that FEAR 2, Fire Emblem, Pikmin, PoP LE all dropped at BB.

Second and third posts have been updated with the drop from Gamestop from last Thursday.

Waiting on confirmation of what may have dropped @ Best Buy before adding those.

EDIT: Thanks for the confirmation, Donniedroc. Can anyone confirm any other ones?

It kinda sucks that BB finally dropped some guides when my local BB stores are in full on denial mode nowadays, since I know the local two stores had a bunch of all of those ones.

Thus far, going by Donniedroc's post and Frosty's hastily posted list, I've gathered what looks to be a rather healthy list of drops, including at least THREE hardcover guides already. Here's the list, thus far:

Fear 2
Fire Emblem
Left 4 Dead
Mirror's Edge Hardcover
Pikmin(Wii version)
Prince Of Persia LE
Resident Evil 5 LE

For clarification which store are the above for, I am assuming BBy?

Well it looks like I'll miss out on this one - I'm carless presently and noone is picking up their phones. Sucks too, my usual BB has at least one Mirror's Edge guide and I wanted an RE5 one.

The Good?

I can confirm that POP LE, RE5 LE, Pikmin and Mirrors Edge dropped.

The Bad?

I can confirm this because it seems that the employees made of with a few guides before I could grab them shits.

Pikmin was stickered .01 in one BB and they had one RE5 LE guide last week. It was gone today,so I figured it had dropped. When I checked my other BB, which had 11 RE5, they had 2... sucks.

Jump to conclusions much around here? He's probably doing what I do when I"m away on business travel: Call my friends and ask them to drop into Best Buy for me.
