Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
IATCG, you need to change Fire Emblem to Shadow Dragon, NOT Radiant Dawn, RD pennied awhile back. SD is the one that just pennied, I got 1 myself the other day.
Duly noted. I'll change it now.

EDIT: Second and third posts re-updated with the name change for Fire Emblem.

Found a Metal Gear Hardcover at Best Buy and it scanned at 29.99. It may have unpennied, like some of the others in the past (or it may just be this store that reentered it into the system)

Picked up lotr:conquest, sonic unleashed and fire emblem:shadow dragon today. Cashier tried to ring them up 3 seprate times in disbeleive called the customer desk and someone told her to wait and the whould come over(A manager I suppose) Mean while the line is growing and of course it's the only registor open. Finally the phone beeps and I can hear a voice say let it go. Gave her a nickel got me reciept and 2 cents and out the door I went. So far out of the 4 store I have been to this is the only one which someone had a issue. But I got the books anyway.
Confusion is normal at first (heck, the concept of nice books for a penny is tough to grasp).

Here's what you need to do:
1) Ignore the price on the site.
2) Walk your ass over to your Best Buy, and pick the guides you actually want (keep it to a minimum if possible). Say you pick RE 5 CE, POP LE, and maybe Pikmin.
3) If you feel uncomfortable with the concept of buying these for just a few cents, pick something you actually would want to buy. Otherwise, walk over to a cashier (not customer service), and try to look surprise when they ring a penny. Pay and leave.
4) If people refuse to sell them to you, then do not make a scene, and leave. Just look for other Best Buy within drive distance, and try it there (if it's worth it to you).

As long as it's listed in the second post, you can be sure it's been confirmed and re-confirmed at least twice more by your fellow CAG's before I EVER put it into that second post.
thankyou both i was able to pickup the mirrors edge for a penny, but no copies of PoP:LE i swear they had a ton of them las time i was there.
thanks again:wave:

Is there an ignore feature within CheapAssGamer. I'd like to NOT look at a few of the posts in the trade thread because of the ridiculously long format of irrelevant guides and large & colorful font some of you choose to use.

I mean...why do I even need to bother with you if all you are willing to do is trade, yet you only have 2 obscure wants and FOUR of the same guides I want.

I hope the next trade thread has limits on colors & fonts and should also be limited to relevant guides.....like guides dropped this year.

Some people use the different colors and fonts to differentiate between guides they'll get rid of easily and ones that'll take a good offer to get them to let go of as well as to denote guides they've just picked up. They also do it to grab people's attention to their TL of guides.

As for people only being willing to trade, when someone wants 6-7 guides and wants you to do them for $4 shipped and have you LOSE money on the deal, THAT's why many of us went to only trading at this point.

So, sorry you can't get those rare guides you want for the price we all paid for them(.01), but if a guide is worth $50 on Ebay why should someone sell it outright for way under that? Just because they paid a penny, doesn't mean they HAVE to sell it for cheap too.

For a newbie, you sure are a rude shithead. Welcome to CAG though, don't bother checking my TL, guide or otherwise since you'll probably be annoyed by all of the colors on it.

No worries, you were already on my ignore list...Cheers!

EDIT - I mean, are you insane, all you have for wanted guides are Batman: Arkham Asylum and Ghostbusters...who has those...and a better question yet...who in their right mind would trade for an older drop. Yet, all you're willing to do is trade...yet you're sitting on 80+ guides...but are only willing to trade for two guides on your want list that haven't dropped yet...AND I'M THE SHITHEAD. No thanks, I'd rather not scroll through a waste of time every time I visit the trade thread.

Wow, coming into a thread and insulting the OP, nice. How about a little respect to the guy who organizes this thread. Without him this info might be a lot harder to find.

I take more issue with folks 'sitting' on guides like it's a 401(k) or something...and only willing to trade...even further when they want something nobody has...what's the point. I mean, Hell, I might as well ignore them...I have nothing else they want because they already have all the prior drops and any future drops they may not get they still caused me to wait for a guide I could have been using...what good is it NOT to ignore them. The ginormous font some of the folks in the Trade thread use is just ridiculous.

I have 3 copies of Mirror's Edge and 2 of Prince of Persia...if they don't trade, I'm sure as hell not sitting on them for a year. I'd much rather ship them to someone else who will actually use them. I thought that was the point of being a CheapAssGamer.

It costs $2.77 to ship media mail for 2 pounds and if I were going to Best Buy anyway for myself, how am I out any extra money to pass these savings on to another CAG if they are willing to pay $2.78?

I've already stated I'd pay $5 a guide in my post in the Trade Thread. Yet, a few spectacular CAG'ers have one upped me and offered less...AMAZING.

You guys that want to sit on your guides rather than a fellow CAG'er enjoying them, go ahead, I'm sure your mom will eventually get mad at you for the space they are taking up.

So wait, if I was already on your ignore list, then HOW did you see my post about you?:D I think this is just someone's pitiful cry for attention.

Look at me, I'm insulting the OP and others for using different colors and only wanting guides they actually NEED or want.

As for people not wanting an older drop, there have been many who wanted some of the guides I have, but unfortunately I had no need for anything on their TL. Why should I be forced to take something I can't use and don't want?

Thing is though, some of these guides(Tales Of Vesperia, Half Life:Raising The Bar)end up being worth $50-100 if you 'sit on them' for a while. I just got done trading my Tales Of Vesperia guide for a mint/complete copy of Ghostbusters for PS3.

So tell me, why should I have sold it to you for $5 when it was clearly worth a game to someone else?

Oh and BTW Muthafodder, you missed the Demon's Souls guide that I also asked for, though that may only be on my list of wanted guides in my main trade list.

Is it just me, or is there the smell of banning in the air?

Listen MF: I can understand these people wanting to only trade. Not everyone just wants pure cash, some want to trade for other games. It is the same case with me in some situations. I would never sell my Assassin's Creed copy, but I would trade it. Sometimes its just better to trade then sell, and obviously you fail to understand that.

Just as I have the option to ignore anyone in the Trade thread who wouldn't benefit me...right? There is a valid option to ignore...right?

If anyone is breaching bannability...it should be the ones using vulgarity toward other members.

All I've done is express why I feel the need to ignore someone.

Way to ingratiate yourself to the community you want to do business with, MFer. I guarantee you that you've put off people who would otherwise have been willing to do a deal with you. If my TL doesn't appeal to you, by all means, put me on your ignore list. I've done several trades/sales in the last month involving these "undesirable" guides that are over a year old so your complaints are without merit. There is a market for them regardless of whether you're a part of said market.

Muthafucker -

Look, since it's THEIR trade list and it's what they want to get and trade, WHO THE fuck ARE YOU to tell them what to put there?

You don't like it, don't trade with them.

PLEASE put me on ignore as well so I don't ever end up inadvertently trading with you. I've seen a lot of stupid newbs on here but most of them are clueless, not obnoxious.

Unbeliveably arrogant and insulting to the OP. You get my nomination as "Most Memorable CAG Villain 2009"

If it weren't for IATCG and this thread you probably wouldn't even know about penny guides. I know I didn't. Thanks IATCG for starting this thread and doing such a great job maintaining it.

EDIT: Nice avatar Muthafodder...you really are a clown.

Was able to pick up the Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia CE guides. First penny guides I was actually able to find ^^

Thanks a lot IATCG for keeping the thread updated so well!

God of War: Chains of Olympus is now a penny at Best Buy. Don't know when it happened (didn't see it on the list), but it happened. Picked it up today.

Thanks goes out to IATCG for maintaining the thread, most definitely.

That guide actually pennied close to a year ago. Good find!

Just a suggestion:

There weren't any PoP LE guides at the first BB I went to, so I checked out their in-store kiosk to see if any other close-by stores might have them in stock. For whatever reason, the in-store kiosk (as of yesterday) lists these most-recently-dropped guides as $0.01. You could ostensibly order them from the kiosk (print out your order at the kiosk, just in case) and pick them up at another store, or have them shipped to you if no one has them in stock. After ordering, I picked up a few of these guides in another store without any trouble whatsoever.
Just picked up KZ2, Resident Evil 5 LE, Mirrors Edge, POP, NFS, and Argonauts at the bestbuy in Edison all for a penny each.

Yes, Killzone 2 was in the prior Best Buy drop.

Ok, I hate to sound like such a novice (except that I am); but when I check the stores website these guides are still listed as $20.

Are they only listed as a penny in the stores computers and it's up to CAGs to guess and find them?

(If this information was already said and I skipped over it, I apologize)

Usually, the guides DO disappear from the website prior to them being pennied. Some use this to determine which guides to watch. Sometimes the guide will be gone from the site a long time with no drop. In this case however it has been noted that some of the guides are still online.

Oh alright. Thanks. I just joined the site not too long ago and I wish I found this sooner. I'm gonna go try and pick up Fire Emblem for DS and see what happens.

Thanks again!

1 RE5 LE
4 PoP LE
3 Mirrors Edge LE
1 Fear 2

Haha, this just sounds so ballsy, I'd love to hear what happens if someone tries it.

I've done it before when they had them at $.01 on website and picked them up. Most of the time they cancel the orders but no harm in trying.

Probably the best thing to do is print out the page showing the guide as .01 and take it with you to the store. If they try not to sell them to you, you can show them the printout from their webpage and they HAVE to honor it.

I notice in the 2nd post on this tread that it has drops all the way back to 10-18-2007. What are they chance of finding guides that drop that long ago?

Though, random old penny guides do show up from time to time, it's usually just a few months worth or so. It's a slim chance of finding anything more than a drop or two back.

Two years in the past? Pretty much nil.

If you think that is ballsy, try price matching a penny guide, which I did at Circuit City (with only a receipt showing it was .01) back when Best Buy pennied the standard edition of God Of War II.

I'm still trying to figure out how the fuck I got away with it, since you usually need an ad printout to do so.

Actually they don't have to honor it and almost always never will. They will just say its a mistake and they won't match the price.

if you think that is ballsy, try hacking best buy's website and changing the prices of the items you want and then shipping it all to free to the house of your enemy and letting them take the fall when best buy finds out and calls the police then hijacking the police warehouse for the ill gotten goods and then selling it all on ebay for PROFIT and trading the rest here on CAG for even MORE profit.

THAT's ballsy.

Ballsy?

This thread has taken a turn for the vagina-y.

Got one of those 2009 Summer Codes guides today. I'll probably use it... never. Of course, the Pikmin guide still eludes me.
