Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
All for $0.15 with free shipping :)
How did you get free shipping? I was going to order a few online incase I struck out in store but at 5.49 per a guide shipped it was going to cost me $33 for 6 guides.
I can confirm pretty much everything that was posted this morning. Good luck everyone!
Ditto I grabbed most of the guides on my list except a few drecks & Tomb Raider which they either didn't have or I over looked, also reconfirming Star Ocean & Little Big Planet (thanks to the CAG who pointed them out)
Any update on Fable II?
I'm pretty sure they didn't have Fable II at my store as I would have surely tried it if I saw it just incase, to add something useful I did try GRAND THEFT AUTO IV which was the only old guide that caught my eye to try and it was still full price.
Lmao, why are most of these on the website for a penny? Has this ever happened before?
They used to have them on the site for a penny pretty regularly on penny drop day but this is the first time I've seen them do this in a long time.
Occasionally, but it seems a bit glitchy today as the prices are fluctuating between $20 and 1 cent.
I saw UFC for a penny this morning at about 8:45 EST and started looking around. If you click on the guides and check all of them on my list were (and probably still are as I'm posting this) showing up as a penny right above the "add to cart" button. A few of the guides were showing up at either/and .10/full price at the main page as I would go back to the main page (UFC, Wolfenstein, Transformers and one or two more I can't remember)
Can't do in-store pick up for any of them :(
Your store has to have at least 3 or 4 (can't remember which but I think it's 3) copies in stock in order to do in store pick up. I only saw 1 or two guides set for in store at my store. For example Infamous was one of the guides I could do store pick up of which my store had 4 of on the shelf. IMO it best to take a chance and go out as early as possible if your interested in a few guides since you won't know for sure what they have for anything they have 0-2 of in inventory.

Hit up one store and they were pulling them. Did manage to sneak around the lady and snag the following - The Wolfenstein guide i pulled out of her cart while she had her back turned :) I'll check one more store on way home.

Funny enough no one had a problem selling em once i got em past the manager.

Fallout 3 X 3
Wolfenstein X 1
Metroid Trilogy X 2
Star Ocean 4 X 2
Little Big Planet X 1
Infamous X2
SFV X 2

Thanks guys, got a few fallout 3's, a zelda, and a infamous. Only ones I wanted were fallout 3 (already have zelda, but w/e) and infamous was a just incase I ever get it guide lol. Again, thank you for the heads up.

Hmm, one of my $.03 orders is ready for pickup at a local store, but now I'm worried I may have tipped them off to look for penny guides. If I go and the rest of the stock is removed, I'll be pretty upset with myself for being so hasty with the order. I should have at least done store pickup at a location that didn't have Star Ocean 4....

Was able to get 1 of everything on the list I wanted except Star Ocean. I did get 2 of the RE IV LE guides from the last drop, so I 'll have to head over to the Trade List to see what I can do to remedy this.

Rave Child worst case i have an extra SO4 guide i can trade you :)

I've done store pickup before and had it work for penny guides - i don't think the people who actually pick up guides see price, they just see what items to take off shelf.

Hmm Well I just got the email saying my items were ready to be picked up:

Gears of War 2, SFIV guides so lets hope they dont cock block me when I go get them.. im really hoping to find a SO4 guide though.

Thanks to whomever posted these.

Well, the BB website won't let me checkout with the six guides I could do for in-store pickup, and shipping costs without free shipping are painful. :wall:

Guess it's time to update the guide clearinghouse post with my needs and take my hope on the kindness of other CAGs. I'll try to see if I can get them on the way home, though each time I tried to do in-store pickup, stores kept dropping off of the list. :wall:

Both of those are good to know. It's been a long time since I've missed out on something I really wanted, though, so hopefully I find them somewhere. If they don't see the prices of the guides, I guess that's just a good sign because it means none of the stores pulled guides yet!

I had that problem, too, but I think it was because I had too many of certain guides. I lowered quantities and kept retrying and it went through eventually. Are they still showing as a penny on the website though? It looked to me like a lot of them jumped back to regular prices after I made my order.

I can confirm everything that was posted as well.

Pretty much got at least of 1 of everything posted including Star Ocean.

Please check my thread in trades if anyone is interested for anything

Picked up:

Infamous(2 left)
LBP(700 left)
GeoW2(300 left)
Ghostbusters(1 left)

Obviously exaggerating with the 2 but got 1 of each. They had everything else except I didnt check the Wii section as they were reorging for the holidays and didn't want to tip off the workers. This was Nassau Park(Princeton, NJ)

EDIT: No Star Oceans, was definitely hoping for that oh well.

I've been checking this thread once a week for months looking for a fallout 3 guide I just wanted to say thanks I finally got one for a single cent lol

Thanks for the heads up this morning, guys! Saw multiple copies of everything on the list except for Zelda and Infamous. I've never found any of the previous Zelda price drops either, so that's nothing new.

Summarizing what I'm reading here:
Fallout 3 non-CE guide is pennied at Best Buy
Fallout 3 CE guide is NOT pennied at Best Buy; still full price (despite Frosty's comment that it "dropped")

Anyone that finds otherwise, please post.

It wouldn't go past the cart page for me.

The guide prices were jumping back and forth between normal price and the $0.01 price as well, though a screen refresh would take care of the price issue.

Still no luck in getting the BB.com order to go through.

Yup. That was my experience.
The list I printed this morning didn't specify which was pennied, so I price chedked the basic, the GOTY, and the CE guides.
Only the plain guide rung up for a penny.

Pretty good haul! everything listed that was a penny rang up as so. I can't believe it was so soon for Metroid Prime Trilogy!! had to convince the lady that it was b/c after so long, they just get 'clearanced' out and it's 'ok'! didn't use my reward zone. Thanks BB!!
Silver Rewards Big Swinging D!ck
You actually bought stuff at Best Buy OTHER than penny guides to get the Silver RZ thing?

Unless it's a friends' purchases, I doubt I'll ever get up to that level on the RZ program, since CAG has definitely ruined me as a normal consumer for electronics.

I ALWAYS try to find the best deal, be it a clearance or a temporary price cut or whatever, so Best Buy's gouged and never clearanced prices would always cause me to steer clear.

I'm not even bothering going to either local BB till this weekend. If they have anything left, I'll try for 1-2, but I'm not getting my hopes up and I won't even bother with the third BB I was hitting since it's a dead zone anymore now too.

EDIT: Second post is updated with the list from FOnewearl. Will be updating the third post in a bit.

EDIT#2: Wiki post is updated now as well. Thanks to all who contributed info to this drop.

Sweet Lord!! Ive been doing BB penny runs for years and this by far was the motherload.

112 guides between my 4 local BBs!!! 112!!! aka a buck 12!

Now before I get the hoarder flames, realize that 3 of the 4 BB i goto pull their penny guides halfway thru the day so if i dont get em all int he morning of the initial pull, its game over. I also extend invite to all local Buffalo cags if they really want a guide I have extra of.

I picked up:
Fallout 3
Ghostbusters
Gears of War 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy

I only got 1 of each since my BB have been pretty strict on pulling them lately. Unfortunately, I didn't see any of Star Ocean or Infamous.

Missed one:

Spore: Galactic Adventures
Still no luck in getting the BB.com order to go through.
I let it sit for a while with items in my cart and tried again after lunch and got it to go through after it wouldn't initially. I'd suggest just trying again periodically because it should go through eventually.

Picked up 47 guides for $.49

Would have had more had it not been for the assholes at the Chapel Hill, OH BB.

One of the employees went up to the cashier before I got there and told her to manually change the prices as they rung up to whatever the stickered price was. The managers wanted to sell me them at that price too, so I said "fuck you" and left. Yes, I let my anger get the best of me, but I couldn't believe they were saying that they were in the system wrong and they had to charge me full price.

The original Spore(softcover version) is now showing as .01 on the site. I'm not 100% sure if the one Shrike listed IS the softcover or an expansion pack one, but can someone clarify?

Don't know about that one, but I just ordered 4 of them from the Chapel Hill best buy because those jerks forgot to remove the PC guide from the online system. :D

Revenge is sweet. :D

Also for the OP, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess dropped with that Gamestop drop last week. It was among a stack of penny guides that I was allowed to choose one of.

Alright, so for those of you who place an order to pick up and then receive the email telling you that they are not available it does seem as though you can call them up and have them shipped for free. I just got off the phone and am now getting GOW2, Fallout 3, Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and Cheat Code Overload shipped for free to my place. Good deal, they better not cancel it after I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with a guy who seemed pretty sure this would work.

You walked out of a couple of stores with FORTY-SEVEN guides and you're complaining that you didn't get a few more? Jesus, dude, you might be mad you didn't get a few extra guides, but they might get in serious trouble for not pulling those guides. Get a grip and lose the entitlement.

Different issue, please don't feel that I'm using the same tone as in my last paragraph:

I don't want to threadcrap, or start another ten page fight or anything, but shouldn't we not use the website to ship penny guides or order/pick them up in store? That's going to draw a lot of attention to penny guides at the corporate level, I would think.

Add-on:

Thanks to everyone providing info for the drops. It's much appreciated.

yeah dude, jesus! I'm all for these penny guides, but don't you fear they might 'blacklist' you at that location now?? I generally grab as many as I can carry, but I'm not going to fill up a cart!! I could barely carry the 7 guides I grabbed...

That may explain why I got blacklisted.:lol::lol: I was the king of 'grabbin' dem shits' for the longest time.

I think at one point I had closer to 1000 guides from a combo of Best Buy and Gamestop combined. Of course, most of them were worthless shit.

Second and third post updated with LOZ: TP for the GS drop and Star Ocean: Last Hope for the BB drop today.

If there's a game/guide with multiple versions or the same main name but some sub name with each different version, I ask that you PLEASE clarify which specific guide dropped. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure thats why he said "Star Ocean 360".

I was able to snag 1 copy of 15 different games (tried to buy multiples but they gave me BS about 1 per title). I'm hitting 7 best buys tomorrow, and since now there is a store locator for most of this and last months drops, im sure I wont have any issues finding more stuff.

I know this isnt the trading thread, but if anyone is looking for anything other than Fallout 3 CE's, let me know and ill see what I can find.

Spent around 70 cents today between 2 local best buys! and the manager at one of them just became cool as hell. when i got there he remembered me from last penny drop. He told me how they were supposed to throw them away but, he would rather see his store make a few cents off them instead of putting them in the trash. So then he told me he had already pulled all the pennied guides and saved them for me(SWEET!!)he even already rang them up which was a total of 53 cents. so i gave him a whole dollar and told him not to worry about the change (LOL).

The best part of all was there were a total of 16 Fallout 3 guides and 2 of them were the game of the year (Soft-cover) guides(he must have put them in by mistake. cause i went to the other best buy to get a few others and the GOTY ones rang up 26.99)So score for me. i got atleast 1 of everything except the sports one that i did not want anyway . Thanks for the update today everyone!!!!
I'm pretty sure thats why he said "Star Ocean 360".

Like I said above, when these companies decide to use the same main name but 11 bajillion sub names for games in the same series, I like when people specify BY NAME which version dropped.

No offense meant, but I don't follow the SO series, so I don't know which guide is for which console/handheld, so PLEASE SPECIFY BY NAME(and NOT by console/handheld) when listing guides.

Now, with that out of the way, I'm going to double check the second post to see if Spore softcover pennied before @ BB. If not, that may be yet another addition to the list.
