First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.


Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Q: What Are Penny Guides?

A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Don't you think I would do that if I could? Like I said, the store is 30 minutes away by car. 30 miles is NOT fucking walking distance. Plain and simple. Quit being a jackass.

I usually don't buy guides at MSRP but the Borderlands GOTY for $15 sounded good; only 1 store in my area had them in stock for pickup so it looks like there weren't too many of these guides floating around in my area.

I know it wasn't a penny but atleast you paid half the MSRP. I think you're right about the limited availability. The copy that I bought yesterday wasn't sealed but it was the only one they had. I didn't want to reorder and drive further so I just kept it. It sure is a nice guide, though. Easily worth $15 (in my opinion).

When my first order was cancelled, the e-mail mentioned the ship to store option and said it would take 3-5 days.

Since we're asking for pictures of guides, can anyone who has the Godfather II guide tell me if there's what looks like pencil sketches of some of the characters on the inside of the covers? I ask because I've seen the guide at a local game shop and I thought someone just drew inside the book.

Was out of town visiting family so I decided to check out their local Best Buy. Found a few from the last drop and also found two more copies of the Strongbad PC Game (yes, it still rings up $0.01 in the system). Not too bad.

I still have four of those Strong Bad PC games sitting around here someplace. I could probably use the cases for DVD's, since it doesn't seem like there's much(if any) interest in the game from anyone I know.:lol:

OKAY... Here's what's up. I finally found a guide at gamestop. I thought super street fighter 4 was one too as well so I grabbed it on the safe side, it rang up 10 bucks and the manager was all excited saying they are all half off right now. I didn't want that one obviously then. But the second guide I knew was on it, and it was scribblenauts. And sure enough I watched it ring up for a penny. Seconds later he removed it from the list I wanted.
So here's the thing, I said I was confirmed by a store supervisor at another store location if they had it on the floor, that they have to legally sell it to me. The manager (which is who I was talking to from the start. And I didn't know he was a manager, no nametag saying it was.). So anyways the manager said he refused to sell it to me, and from then on was kicking me out of the store. I refused to leave without my penny guide, and he called mall security, which is when I left then. I had a slip up of saying fuck you on the way out, and he said junk like I'm banned from the store.

Now here is part 2... Yes I mean part 2, lol.
I was talking to mall security at our van with my wife. He was there to have me thrown out I guess, talked to him about the situation and he was on my side, saying they would have to sell it. They are supposed to pull them and rip the covers off, but this one was a slow gamestop. So we are talking to him, my wife then goes into the gamestop to ask for the district managers name and phone number. As thats happening, mall security's phone rings, he answers it and looks towards the gamestop. I ask if they are having my wife to be thrown out and he replys with a yes. My wife comes out and tells me the second she gets in there and in line to ask, the same manager goes up and keeps literally bumping into her asking her to move. She says no and tries to ask for the district managers name and phone number. Thats when he says she has to leave when he's calling security. She said she's not leaving until she gets the name and number, and he said you'll get the number when the security comes in to the store to ARREST YOU for trespassing..

So thats the whole ordeal guys.. Go ahead and respond to this with what you think. Sucks I didn't get a penny guide. If any one wants, they can send me some =D
But the real treat to do for me would be this.. If you live in Portland Oregon. Avoid the 102nd and Halsey gamestop because of the manager Justin (which who this whole problem was about..).
 
So you will of course be calling corporate, and filing a complaint on tellgamestop.com. I would also call another local GS and ask them for the District Managers name and number. If the GS guy actually layed hands on your wife, which it sounds like he did I would also file a police report. I think that manager will be fired before the week is out. I'm sure the in store video will show him pushing your wife.
 
Yeah thanks for the advice on that part. But yeah, already got the number for the district manager. My wife already called and it sounds like she's on the phone with her now. So all is gravy there

He's not a complete idiot. Yes he made way to much out of a 1c guide. But the Managers behavior is unacceptable and entirely ludicrous. Frankly I find most GS managers to be assholes, which considering how much they are paid, and the guidance they are given from above, is really not that big of a surprise.

And p.s I think he's mistaken about them having to sell it too him, unless it actually had a 1c pricing sticker on it, which I doubt it did.

I agree that the manager should never lay hands upon any customer. However, none of this would have happened if he hadn't INSISTED that the be sold a penny guide in the first place. That's a class a asshole thing to do.
 
Frankly, I don't see an issue with the GS manager. If they LEGALLY have to sell you the guide, then handle matters through the PROPER protocol.

People like this guy are why I'm glad I haven't worked in retail in years. All of this hassle, him and his wife getting kicked out, the threat of an arrest all for a stupid penny guide.

This is one of the most asinine stories I've seen in 6+ years on this site. Users like him should be stripped of his CAG account. Disgusting.

So here's the thing, I said I was confirmed by a store supervisor at another store location if they had it on the floor, that they have to legally sell it to me. The manager (which is who I was talking to from the start. And I didn't know he was a manager, no nametag saying it was.). So anyways the manager said he refused to sell it to me, and from then on was kicking me out of the store. I refused to leave without my penny guide, and he called mall security, which is when I left then. I had a slip up of saying fuck you on the way out, and he said junk like I'm banned from the store.

Now here is part 2... Yes I mean part 2, lol.
I was talking to mall security at our van with my wife. He was there to have me thrown out I guess, talked to him about the situation and he was on my side, saying they would have to sell it. They are supposed to pull them and rip the covers off, but this one was a slow gamestop. So we are talking to him, my wife then goes into the gamestop to ask for the district managers name and phone number. As thats happening, mall security's phone rings, he answers it and looks towards the gamestop. I ask if they are having my wife to be thrown out and he replys with a yes. My wife comes out and tells me the second she gets in there and in line to ask, the same manager goes up and keeps literally bumping into her asking her to move. She says no and tries to ask for the district managers name and phone number. Thats when he says she has to leave when he's calling security. She said she's not leaving until she gets the name and number, and he said you'll get the number when the security comes in to the store to ARREST YOU for trespassing..

So thats the whole ordeal guys.. Go ahead and respond to this with what you think. Sucks I didn't get a penny guide. If any one wants, they can send me some =D

A penny guide is not worth getting thrown out of some place and almost arrested over. Unless your state is one of the few that has consumer laws that states that something MUST be sold for the price it rings up as(some require the item to be marked the price it rings up or they don't have to honor it), then you have no grounds for demanding anything.

As for you possibly filing a police report against the manager of the store for pushing your wife, if she's as ignorant, obstinant and pig headed as you are then she probably deserved being bumped.

This is what, the 3rd or 4th time you've come into this thread to piss and moan about 'omg I found guides and they wouldn't sell them to me I'm gonna report their ass'. I used to be this way, but then I got 'chummy' with the local store employees and actually talk to them when I go into the store, instead of my old routine of bringing up 5 guides that I knew pennied(and I knew they did by checking the second post, not having to be spoonfed the info:razz:) and when they came up a penny DEMANDING I be sold them.

Retail stores are private property, you as a customer are being allowed into their establishment for the purpose of doing business there. But look at it this way, would YOU wanna deal with a loudmouth bossy customer like yourself if you owned a business?

No? I didn't think so. So look at it from the underpaid and overworked(and largely irascible) clerks from Gamestops point of view. Would you rather have customers who are gonna be nice and be in and out of the store in 10 minutes or a ton of assholes who are gonna be overly demanding and refuse to leave until escorted out?

Too bad there isn't a way to block certain people from viewing some CAG threads, since some of you newbies need a super detailed guide on how to be a nice customer and not be a total jackoff when trying to get some of these deals.
 
AH! This has to be about my favorite thread on CAG. I love peoples tales of getting into conflicts with mgrs and such. Esp. when they clearly havent read the OP or learned previous storys not to push the issue. Now in this intsance the mgr had no right or cause to be pushign this mans wife. Albiet if I was in this mans shoes I prob would have went to jail for beating this mgr arse...

Now I'm just waiting on IATCG to come put his two cents in,,, almost always an enjoyable read

Yeah - I have to agree with others... That's a lot of trouble to go to over a penny guide. I've only been turned down at a GS before, but I just laughed it off. They ended up letting me have a couple after that, just because I hadn't been a dick.

I'll say one thing. The dude would be unhappy if he bumped my wife. She'd have beaten the shit out of him. Those WV girls are tough and mean.

I was told by a different store mangager to go to that store bc they dont throw them out and that no matter what if they are on the sales floor then they HAVE to sell if to you no matter what it rings up at. Once it rang up at the penny price he is the one who freaked out on me and refused to serve me anymore. I then said it was on the sales floor you have to sell it to me, because this is what I was told the store manager I know at another store. Even when my wife spoke to the district manager she even said that he was in the wrong for laying hands on her for no reason and for throwing us both out of the store and that the fact that if it was on the floor he had to sell it no matter what. That its his job to pull things off the floor when they go on clearance and he wasnt on top of his game and there for he is 100% in the wrong. Those are the district managers words. They never mark them down the guides, because they are supose to be pulled off the floor and distroyed. The only reason he tried throwing my wife out of the store was because she asked for the name and number for the district mangers. She wasnt even in the store with me at the time I was there. So there for he had no idea why she would want the number. She only asked for it after he touched her. So for all he knew she was asking because he touched her. So he was in the wrong when it comes to throwing her out for no reason, she didnt even ask about the guides or even touch anything in the store. Alot of other customers where walking out of the store because of the way he was talking to people.

So you all know, I'm not trying to start a fight on this site. Didn't think anyone would not sit there and defend the manager of a store. Either way, oh well, it just lets me know don't post anything other than, "Alright I got guides!!!11!!!"
