Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

I nabbed Brutal Legend and NGS2. When I went back to pick up more BL, two employee were there with a clipboard pulling guides. In the few seconds I was standing nearby, I overheard one of them say "Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2" and "Left 4 Dead 2". There were no L4D2's at this location, but heads up to everyone on that since I didn't see it listed in this thread.

I know this isn't the place but got my BL and 3 rockband songs for ps3. I don't do that so here is the code for 1st to grab it if they want it - B4HX-FKB9-KHF2 ~Peace

Someone got to it. Thanks though.

Where did you get the 3 RB song code?
Where did you get the 3 RB song code?
BL is Brutal Legend. I got 3 songs too (Ps3 songs for Rock Band.). PM me and I'll send it later tonight, like around midnight central time. Sorry, but I usually don't get on at home(work now) 'till I'm about to go to sleep.
Where did you get the 3 RB song code?
Launch copies of Brutal Legend contained redeemable codes in them for a RB song metal song pack. The codes were said to expire on Dec 31st 2009, but they are still working. Now the game price was cut to $39.xx and there is a $20 RZ coupon so alot of people are picking it up. The RB song offer is clearly marked on the front of the game case so make sure you see that if you are looking for one.

Also, these are not penny guides, but Target is clearancing some guides. They currently have Halo Wars, Scribblenauts, MUA2 and Star Wars Republic Heroes for $4.xx. Not as good as a penny, but something to keep in mind if you think you might get shut out of penny guides at your local BB.

Hit all 4 of my local BBs, all guides were pulled. Did find a handful of Guides from previous pulls though so not a total waste.

I went to pick up Brutal Legend game + guide. But since they didn't have the guide, I left the game on the shelf. Too bad. $20 for both is a sweet deal.
^^you showed them!
i shouldve yelled at the top of my lungs like a crazy man:

WHERE IS THE BRUTAL LEGEND GAME GUIDE! WHERE?! WHERE'S THE PENNY GUIDE, STRING?! WHERE'S THE PENNY GUIDE, STRING?!

and then maybe break their rock band guitar and walked out while pissing myself.

That wouldve made a better story.

Got one measly copy of SW Republic Heroes and that was AFTER getting one very helpful employee to pull it from the back. Otherwise the four Best Buys I checked in the Austin area where all devoid of the penny guides.

The only flaw in your story is that the guitar was most likely broken already

I should've asked an employee to get me a tmnt smash guide. All pulled at my area so i just got Revenge of the fallen guide to compensate my almost empty trip.

A big nothing at my closest Best Buy (Cary, NC). I refuse to drive around Raleigh/Garner this afternoon with the rain to check the other three...if any of you guys in the area stumble upon anything, pick me up a NGS2 guide :)...pleeeaaasseee...

checked couple stores, one was pulled and one was not.

But only 4 guides dropped? anyone record any instance of this low number of guides drop at bb ever?

L4D2 scanned at $9.99 (I can't remember if this was discussed prior to your post, but I tried again anyway..) and yes, another BB cleared out.

they win this round indeed :bomb:

I got 2 of each:
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
SW Republic Heroes
Brutal Legend
Maybe able to get 4 more SW Republic Heroes tommorrow.Tried 3 stores today 1st I scored , 2nd all pulled even some from previous drops. At the 3rd I opt for some clearance games and didn't want the maager to override the guides so I'll go back tommorrow.
Has anyone picked up an extra Metroid Prime Trilogy guide lately?

The BBs I've tried haven't had them for quite some time.
because they pennied out last year, 10.19.09
I have 1 in my trade list

Well, it would appear that I had a better day than most of you regarding pennied guides.

I stopped at both local BB stores today. At the first one the guides were pulled already and at the second one they had them all on the clearance rack with penny stickers on them.

This is unusual and the first time either store has had penny guides marked with a penny sticker. Maybe someone slipped up and after marking them a penny they were supposed to chuck them in the back but they made an oopsie and put them out instead?

Anyway, I can confirm Brutal Legend, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes and TMNT: Smashup.

I can also confirm that Codes & Cheats Fall 2009(light orange and black cover, SKU#: 9530563) dropped as well.

I grabbed all dem shits after seeing the penny stickers. I mean, what could they say, they're clearly marked for a penny.

I did find an old guide that dropped at the first store too: Cheat Code Overload: Summer 2009(red n yellow front cover with big shit eating grin face on it)for a penny.

On the way home I stopped at the closer Movie Gallery that's closing and I found 3 copies of The Guy Game(2 w/ missing manuals for PS2, 1 complete for Xbox). Thing is, I paid for them with money I made from selling 3 copies of Sudoku Ball Detective, so they were essentially FREE.

I had a banner fuckin' day.:D

Needs glitter. No retail rage story is complete without handfuls of glitter being thrown all around, especially into employees'/managers' faces.

Got Brutal Lengend @ BB. Thanks to those who posted/confirmed it.

Saw NGS2 but my priority was BL. As I was browsing the guides, a blueshirt removed all the NGS2. But I saw some guides from previous drops. Just had to shake my head. I keep envisioning a sign like the "This is Sparta" one you see on the interwebs, except it says "This is Retail" and it has a a bunch of guys teetering on the edge of the pit, all kicking themselves in the butt.

OK. It's about time to update the second and third posts, I believe, since it's been confirmed that only 4-5 guides dropped today.

If anyone gets a chance to check out the WOW: Wrath Of The Lich King guide(blue covers), I do have a feeling that that dropped too, since both BB stores had shittons of them last week and today there was not a damn one in sight.
I grabbed all dem shits
It's back!!!!!!

Congrats on your haul man. I'm on my way out now to see what's available at my local Layton Utah store.

Maybe I'm mis-summarizing the recent thread, but it seems a lot of guides on the list are being pulled but only a few have dropped - so maybe removal of stock isn't a reliable indicator that a guide has pennied?

Or do we think there are some guides from the list that just haven't been checked yet, even by Lox and Frosty in the system?

Second and third posts have been updated. And Purkey, if some better stuff dropped today I would've only gone for the LE/SE/CE ones.

Speaking of which, I also had them price check the WOW WOTLK Atlas today and it is still $19.99.

Oh and before I forget, have them price check one of the Warhammer Online guides using the price sticker on the front cover. It brings up an insane price for the guide($9,999.99) and a prompt on the screen to 'Do Not Use This UPC'.

Trust me. Between me and others here, we checked a ton of the guides a bunch of times over.

I price checked the following today between the 2 stores I hit:

GTA Episodes, GTA Chinatown(PSP), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Sky, Prince of Persia(softcover), Prototype, Resident Evil 5, Saw, Warhammer Online(see above LOL), Far Cry 2, God Of War Collection, Batman: Arkham Asylum and so on.

None of them dropped. Hell. I even had them check newer, more popular game guides like Uncharted 2.

However, now that you mention it, I did NOT see one copy of the Bayonetta guide ANYWHERE. So that is another possibility, along with the WOTLK guide.
Strange, Far Cry 2 was only a penny at my store. It was the only guide that wasn't pulled from the list given a few days ago
I actually checked Far Cry 2 this morning and it was still full price when I checked it. So maybe they are staggering when they penny them?

Thanks for the heads up. I can confirm far cry 2 for a penny. This was purchased around 6:30PM PST.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I can confirm that the 4 known drops (Brutal Legend, TMNT, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Star Wars Republic Heroes) have been pulled at Watertown and Fenway Boston, MA, complete with big fat gaps where the guides used to be. I did find a couple of each at Everett, MA. :D Very happy as I scored Brutal Legend with the $20 off Reward coupon.

Haven't tried any of the other metro Boston stores, but Back Bay and Saugus, MA tend to get either pulled or cleaned out immediately, so best bet is either Cambridge or South Bay if you're in the Hub and still looking.

So I guess Far Cry 2 must've been one of the ones the girl checked by scanning the wrong UPC barcode, since I swear it came up MSRP.

Since it's been confirmed, I'll add it.

BTW....for the next revision(perhaps coming up sooner rather than later)of the guide thread, I'm thinking of doing like Friend Of Sonic does in the Target thread and including the SKU#'s from the guides that drop in a perhaps wholly seperate post besodes the second one.

Yay or nay? I want opinions on this and hopefully lox and Frosty can help us out(like they have been) by providing said SKU's whenever possible.

Um, did they drop in wave or what? FC 2 didn't drop at around lunch time when I was there.

Might want to check all other ones before store closes...

IATCG - SKUs can't hurt, but not sure if its worth the extra time really.

I can confirm nothing at the 2 BB near me. One in Wesley Chapel and the other in Brandon. Unless I missed something or didnt get their in time.

If anyone cares I re-checked Dragon Age LE and that was still full price. I had the same thought as you.
