Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Inventory for the Cary store must be wiggity whack then.
No guides at the San Carlos and Milpitas BBs
The double-team (one on the smartphone, one hoarding) she-man dbags probably got there first. It's kinda sad to see when this goes beyond being a hobby. Don't lose faith, though - they can't be everywhere at once.

Thanks for the heads up on this drop.

Now, what about STFU and RE5? I think those guides are forming small black holes, the surplus is so massive...
Just for the hell of it, I had the cashier scan the normal paperback version of FO3 GOTY just to check the pirce, & it rang up $26.99. :hot:

I was expecting maybe $19.99 @ the VERY MOST. I know it's a large strategy guide, but c'mon!
Even at that price my BB had 5 or 6 a few weeks ago and there were none yesterday. Finally got lucky at BB and pulled a WoW Lich King Atlas. I think the cashier was a new guy, didn't even have the blue polo on. SWEET!!!

I scanned both (since I only saw 1 copy of RE5 in 3 stores) and they still have not pennied.
the first two i went to obviously had done a pull cuz the guide section was very organized, the last store in my area which is in BFE had most of the guides on the list but none of the LE/CE hardcovers. So i loaded a basket full and noticed they had some old copies of Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga so i took one up with the rest and sure enough it was a penny. So i went back after unloading a few bags of guides in the trunk and bought the other 5 copies of the Lego guide but not sure what i'm gonna do with all of them cuz i gave out two already and one to my son since he has the game.
Is it just me or would anyone else go 'sorry son you don't need this guide' and go 'yoink' and grab dem shitz back from the kid once they realized they could sell this guide on Ebay for ALOT more than than the penny they paid for it?

Or am I mistaking this guide for another one?
I like how the list was removed and is nowhere to be found in this thread. Rating this thread a 1/5 for a combination of that and also the 10+ pages of worthless commentary.
If you want competition from lurkers who just love to cut/paste this shit to SD/FW and hoarders in general, by all means I'll update the list as soon as we get it the next time. But don't come into the thread bitching and moaning if you can't find the guide(s) you want because someone came into your local store(s) and grabbed everything.

If you wanna know what dropped, keep up with the thread more often than the first Monday of a month.

I gave everyone about 24 hours to grab all dem shitz. If you haven't by now, oh well. In other words, update is forthcoming for the second and third posts.

 I got nothing from this drop, but you don't see me going 'woe is me'.

Mind ya, I would like a Darksiders guide....;)

And I'll pay the usual unreasonable $2 shipped price every other slob who begs for guides/games offers to pay too.:D

Just got Saboteur at the Atlanta Sidney Marcus store, guy at the door was like that one's a penny today! Everything else was pulled there. At the Decatur which had Fallout GOTY listed as in stock and used to never pull guides, they had nothing. New layout to the store meant much smaller guide area with everything pulled. Oh well.
Inventory for the Cary store must be wiggity whack then.
The reason that store comes up with DA:O in stock is because it was the only store before the prepull that had the guide. No other stores in the area had it. Pulling the guides doesn't necessarily take them out of inventory since in most cases they are still sitting in the back right now.

What I laugh at though are the times when newer employees put out older guides that pennied on the shelf that were STILL sitting in the back in a heap someplace MONTHS after pennying.

That shit never gets old.

Same here... I thought this is being pennied but FO3 GOTY isn't the case.
Perhaps this is only YMMV at certain locations?

Only the Hardcover pennied out, not the softcover.

OK so some fairly big news if no one has reported here yet.....my buddy who is a manager at Gamestop just informed me that guides that now penny out have to be field destroyed BY THE REGIONAL MANAGER. Which means, when guides now drop they are put into their backrooms and their regional manager will come and physically destroy these. I guess the only chance now to get at Gamestop might be the good old dumpster dive. Kinda pissed by this information.

Is this new news? like a company wide initiative?? I assumed this was supposed to always be the case, we've just gotten lucky by lax employees or ones that would rather the guides have a good home, rather than the dumpster..

No this is a new mandate according to corporate (this coming from my buddy who is a manager in a Chicago store) I guess you may be able to get lucky from time to time, but things are looking quite grim with Gamestop. Just a heads up.

I guess it will come down to how strict the regional manager in your neck of the woods is. Some will want this followed out by all employees and others won't care if some are missing from the inventory or might just tell the employees to get rid of them.

Then again I guess it also depends on how much the store employee cares about his/her job.................or if they would love to piss off their regional boss. Time will tell.

Actually, if you had noticed on the cover of the softcover version of the FO3 GOTY guide it doesn't say Collector's Edition, Special Edition or Limited Edition. Last time I checked, the guide listed in the second post now is listed as CE.

Furthermore, the guide is listed in the third post as (hardcover), but I guess for the newbies to guide hunting I should put that notation in the second post as well. Either that or expect newbies to LEARN something as they go and not be spoon fed, as I just did here.

For a long time, most of the employees working at the local GS stores disliked their district manager and I think that's why I ended up getting so many guides for a while. But as of late a couple of things have changed. Namely, the fact that most of those disgruntled workers have been replaced(as is the case in retail often) AND the fact that this same district manager has allowed me to trade in multiple of multiple copies of games as long as the managers of the store(s) I trade them into don't mind and I have a receipt to show what I paid for them.

So even though I used to dislike their DM(due to his strict no penny guides shall leave his stores anywhere but in the dumpster torn into pieces policy), I have grown to like him for allowing me to further exploit their system with the free and nearly free Best Buy games and games I acquired cheaply otherwise to amass myself a shitload of credit in a short time span.

Here in DFW, where the headquarters of GameStop is, its almost impossible to get a penny guide at a GS.
Gah, friend stopped by a local BB and found nothing.

Don't worry. Most of us didn't make out much better. Both of my stores pulled days before the drop and even pulled old guides from prior drops.

I wonder why they would rather destroy those guides than put them out on clearance sale.. heck even at $1, those stores can still make money.

Yeah, I agree. Although, I laughed so hard when I went to Wichita Falls and they had one of the Fallout 3 Dlc guides with a .01 sticker on it!

because if you sell them for $1 then everyone will wait for it to go on clearance like what we do now. its bad for business.
I wonder why they would rather destroy those guides than put them out on clearance sale.. heck even at $1, those stores can still make money.
It comes from the publisher. If they sell them, they're out what they paid the publisher for them (likely more than $1). If they destroy them, they get credit back from the publisher for what they paid, so they are out nothing.

Bottom line, if they destroy them, they don't lose money. If they sell them for less than they paid for them, they do.
I wonder why they would rather destroy those guides than put them out on clearance sale.. heck even at $1, those stores can still make money.
they get more money by reporting it to the publisher as destroyed.
I wonder why they would rather destroy those guides than put them out on clearance sale.. heck even at $1, those stores can still make money.
As others already mentioned, but I believe is ALSO mentioned in the original post(ya know, post #1 on page #1 of the thread:D), the stores have agreements with the publishers. If they can somehow prove they destroyed(or at least didn't sell for a penny)the guides, then they receive credit from the publishers towards future product orders.

If you owned a store and you could get back 80% or whatever the stores get in return for not selling guides for $.01 versus selling them at a loss for one cent, would you want those items sold?

I like to thank and curse Lox, Iamthecheapest, etc.:applause::bow::censored:
I thank you because I got at least one of every of guides.
I curse you because I can't feel my arms. I had to carry them home (1.5 total miles). :D

Really thanks to all.

When I worked at BB we used to grab all the penny items and give them to employees instead of shredding them. Not sure if we ever sold them for a cent or not.

No joke. It's not just GS, Best Buy is the same way here. Maybe 2-3 stores let it slide... not very often at all any more.

One of the BB stores around here used to have just ONE employee who was Ebaying all of the guides for BOTH stores, which was why I routinely had to go way out of town just 2-3 years ago to find anything.

She was a college student working pt at BB. I know because I researched her Ebay name after I bought a lone copy of the guide for The Warriors for PS2/Xbox(and subsequently left her negative feedback that ruined her 100% positive feedback for charging me $5 for shipping to nail her for being the reason I never found any guides locally).;)

$2? that doesn't even cover shipping, fuck that. i always offer $5-6 that way they get a few bucks and shipping is still covered.

So... I found 2x FO3 GOTY LE at a local store. Lucky me. I have one copy I bought a week ago at BB for $30 cause I was starting to be worried that I might miss it. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with it. I'm told I will be unlucky if I try to do a return/rebuy at the CS counter. Should I just return it and hope it ends back up on the shelf the next day? I'm interested if anyone else has ever been in this position, how has it worked for you?

But I was saying that's what others have offered me as far as shipping goes on games and guides in times past. I'm not mentioning names but I've been told by a few what their max price for shipping was going to be. There's being a cheapass and there's being an asshole and expecting someone to send you something at a loss to them.

I told them to have a nice day, only not with such bland words.;)

Actually had the coolest cashier in the world today. I found 2 Fallout GOTY guides and she rings em up .01, I pause and wait. Ok sir that'll be 2 cents. I look at her and ask, you're not gonna call a mngr or team lead? She's like if you dont say anything I wont.

Sux that not many are finding the drops... I only went for Fallout, but they didn't have DA:O or darksiders. Did have sabatouer, Final fantasy, army of 2, and Kingdom hearts. If anyone needs something PM me and I'll see if it's still in. Usually no one gets the penny guides here but me, and my store slides so bad with it. They never pull from what I've seen.

Sorry for the late post. Picked up one of each M&L and AC at the Milpitas store yesterday. There was about a dozen left of AC on the clearance table along with the softcover RE5's. Didn't scan the RE5's since I already had one. There was also a beat up GTVIV which I think pennied but left it.

At Santana Row, just one slightly dented CCFF:CB and nothing else.

Nothing at the Curtner location.

If you return it (with receipt), you will get your $30 back. That is it. They will not sell it back to you for a penny. They will not put it back on the shelf. All this assumes what they call an "arms length" transaction. If you got an in with the CS rep, work what you got. ;) You could also hold on to it and see if the market for eBay/Amazon holds up since we really did not see a huge grab on this one. I assume some BB emplyees grabbed some and are smart enough not to post about it. Personally at $30, I would return it and get my money back, especially if I got more copies.

Well, the only way for me to get some guides in the last drop is to buy, return and then rebuy for a penny.

Just tell them that you want to buy it back with a rewardzone cert or gift card, and you're still doing some shopping. They let me bring a stack of 5 guides back to the front checkout to check out for a penny each.

But I still always buy something with penny guides to return later.

Anytime, man.

BTW, I managed to find time to go to a BB in downtown DC and managed to get some guides, namely Kingdom Hearts, Mario And Luigi, Animal Crossing, Saboteur, and some others. Bitch to carry even with taking the metro.
Still looking for Fallout 3, despite the system saying they had 2. Along with 6 Dragon Age's that were nowhere to be found.

@supaet

I guess this may be the only way going forward the way they have been on top of the pulls. You still have to get mighty lucky both with the CSR on the return giving them back and then the Cashier not calling the manager. Still a better chance than I have seen in the last 6 to 9 months. Thanks!

I don't think it'll work.

So on the note of grabbin dem shitz, I didn't even bother going to stores where I figured they were going to be pulled. But I did go to my super secret doesn't-let-me-down store. And I found one Fallout 3 GOTY in the PC section. :D I did tell my friend that I'd give it to him though. And then i noticed that it was listed at $80 on Amazon... And then he said he didn't really want it since he was almost done with the game. Did the stars align!?!? Also picked up a Kingdom Hearts for another friend, and The Sabotuer for myself.

A few times I found a lone penny guide at different GS stores that they missed, they would just hand it to me without ringing it up. There was no paper trial that said they sold a penny guide knowingly. It's as good as they found it and disposed of it themselves. I don't think their managers would know or care for a single guide that they missed.

In the case of BB, they had to ring it up or else the security guy wouldn't let you go. So I guess they have no choice but to pull it. They just can't hand it to you. In the past, at one BB I found a BioShock guide and rang it up at the register, they called the supervisor and he said he couldn't sell it since it had to go back to the publisher, and he took it away.

Btw, I really want a copy of DAO CE guide. If you can help, please PM me

Probably a long shot but I found a WoW:Wrath of the Lich King Atlas guide and picked it up.

I'm not a WoW fan but the guide is nice. I'd be up for trading it for an extra Fallout 3 GOTY LE or Dragon Age LE guide if you have one. I'd even consider sweetening the deal considering the Atlas is pretty skinny (compared to what I imagine is a large guide in FO3GOTY.)

Went to the other 2 BB i my area today hoping to get some Dragon Age. Found Fallout 3 hardcover so that was nice at least.

2 of the 4 bb didnt pull the guides. At the last one I went to I figured Id do something I never do, simply ask the manager if they pulled the penny guides and half beg them if I could have some. Manager brought out a stack of guides and let me have them. Of course thats a YMMV scenerio but it never hurts too much to ask... especially if the drop includes a guide you really want. Otherwise I just leave it alone.
I know if you returned it to my store it would just got to Home Theaters go backs and be put on the shelf. I'd return it and check back the next morning or at the very end of the night.

Anyone hoping to buy a guide at full price, return it after the drop and re-buy it for a penny, is just encouraging their stores to pull them more often. If you do buy a penny guide after the drop, at least the store makes a cent for every guide purchased that day. If you're gonna buy and return them, then that store now loses $20-$30 for every guide purchased for that day, which is gonna piss off management even more. I seriously doubt they'll let anyone do this. I believe their return policy has a rule against refunding differences towards clearance items in some way.
