Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

what?? so outtie, you're saying a lone guide pennied at Best Buy, and on a Sunday? sounds crazy to me..but not crazy enough to where I won't go check :D

I was a little late for the latest Best Buy drops, but did find a few today.

For me:
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

For the kids:
Codes & Cheats Winter 2010
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Sky

I was hoping for Scribblenauts for the kids (so they can stop bugging me for solutions!) - but no dice.

Sorry for the brief note earlier... I too missed out on hearing about this (recent penny items) until yesterday evening. We stopped at our local Best Buy before hitting the movies... I was only able to come away with a copy of pokeman... I was this close (imagine fingers closely spaced together) at getting kingdom hearts & mario/Louigie... the were near a terminal laying on an endcap... I went to check out... all 3 rang up for a penny. Unfortunately the two on the end cap supposedly were cleared out to be disposed of... as in going to the garbage. That is when the girl told me she had left those only for a moment while she returned COD MW2 to the back to send in for credit.

Since the movie was starting I didn't want to relay all of this at the time...But I figured if they just went to clearance and they were told to send them in for credit... maybe some of you in the later time zones could score on COD MW2... So hopefully it will pay off for someone... I wish I would have known about COD MW2... I am going to try the other places near my work tomorrow to see if I get lucky.

I wish everyone luck

People still go to theaters to see a movie? Both of my local BB stores had about 20 copies of COD: MW2 the last time I checked, though I'd still kill for them to just put back out a lone copy of both Darksiders and The Saboteur's guides.

It's either that or I could order Darksiders guide from GoHastings for like $5.44 shipped and take a chance on it being in good shape.

I've played both those games to completion and I didn't need a guide for either one.

I'd much rather have the guide in the event I get stuck and one of those online guides isn't being of much help. But if I can't trade for or buy one for my price range, then I'll do without.

Whenever possible I try to get the guide for games I have, since some of those online guides for them just suck.
FYI, MW2 is still on the site, and only shows up as available at one store within a 75 mile radius of me. :(
yeah but did you still see $19.99? isn't that some kinda indicator that it may not have dropped?

It sounds like outtie's BB did a pre-pull. The Modern Warfare 2 guide might still be MSRP in their system but they pulled them before tomorrow's drop. The website shows that there are a couple stores in my area that have them in stock. Unfortunately, one of those isn't my "reliable" store (unless they only have a couple of copies). I guess we'll find out tommorow unless Lox or Frosty have something to add.

To your point one store in my area still shows them in stock... the one I visited earlier of course shows no stock... I hope I get a chance to pick some up during lunch tomorrow

Last week when i was at a couple BBs i'd seen stacks of COD MW2 and i just check stock available in my area and now unavailable so it looks like another damn pre-pull.......

I really miss the days when they made an oopsie and marked the prices as a penny on their website and some of us(not me though) were able to order them for in-store pickup via the website.

Since the last drop was 6/7 (the first Monday of June), maybe all of this was a pre pull for a potential drop 7/5 (first Monday in July)? Guess everyone will know more once lox or Frosty confirm something.

Still, it would be appreciated if any out East check this morning and post the results. I'm doubtful, since "outtie" doesn't seem to have actually confirmed it was a penny, just that a blueshirt at one store said they pulled it.

Doesn't make sense for someone to waste a trip to Best Buy when our resident Best Buy source says no.

How about you volunteer when your store opens? Thanks.;)

Considering outtie couldn't even find the second fuckin' post and the fact that this prior drop's list from BB was right in said post and they didn't need to repost it within the last 1-2 pages, I don't really want to believe anything they say.

i'd volunteer but the check stores button says COD MW2 is unavailable at every BB in my area.....somebody else want to volunteer for this mission?
I can confirm that te modern warfare 2 guide rings up for 19.99 as of 60 seconds ago.
DITTO sorry to say. There were only 2 left and have already been pulled from all other stores in my area.

Very sorry everyone it was worth a try I guess.

"My store" doesn't have one. I checked yesterday. Thanks.

And a real thanks to Disneyboy and outtie for useful posts.

Found 5 guides for a penny at my local BB. Previously the store had pulled everything day before. These made their way back out somehow and were marked a penny.

I scored 3 guides today and I'm on my way back to the Gamestop I found some Dead To Rights guides at earlier today to see if the one clerk 'saved me one'. He said he didn't want to give it to me with all of the customers in the store(and there were ALOT in the store).

Anyway, I got the following from the following stores:

Another GS I hit up I found a lone Bioshock 2 softcover(with a bent lower right hand front cover though). They just gave it to me.

The other local BB I hit up this evening I found a copy of Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story(or whatever it's called) and Pokemon Explorers Of Sky.

The one female clerk/manager type asked me if I could find a SMG guide for her. Maybe I'll see if I have one left somewhere around here and hand deliver it the next time I'm there to perhaps increase my chances of scoring guides from there from the next drop.;)

found some guides at a gs, but the guy rip the cover off on all of them and give them to me for free. That really sucks. Any tips for situation like that? They said they either throw them away after ripping the cover off or give it to me for free. But they will rip the cover off no matter what....

My advise is to take it if you want to use it yourself. The same thing happened to me some time back. The manager ripped the cover off of a Star Ocean Second Evolution. I took it for myself. I pleaded for him to at least rip the back cover off, but no. He asked me if I wanted another, but I could not watch him do that again so I said no. That was of course long before they became sought after. I'm glad I have one to use since they are nice to have for RPG's.

Anyone want to pay $50 for a destroyed SOSE? ;)

Be happy you even get anything. There's one time I pleaded to get a guide even if they had to rip off the cover, they still wouldn't give it...

Exactly. Be thankful you got it at all.

You know, if we were all just grabbing guides for our own use, the irony is that they probably wouldn't be cracking down and ripping covers off (which is, by the way, standard practice).

But the chains have started noticing that people are grabbing stacks of identical guides...which magically show up at used bookstores, Ebay, trade lists, etc. Some of us have turned this into a pseudo-business, and the real businesses don't like that sort of competition.

The DM in this area specifically handed down stricter rules for all the GS's in his region. I used to get guides easily, but in one short month they all started destroying them with the same reason: "people are taking them and reselling them, so now we can't give them out any more".

I got that spiel at the closest GS to me when the DM was in to check up on his employees about 3-4 years ago. Thing is I was feeling a bit like being a dick that day, so I pointed out the 100+ guides from drops going back 2 years that the employees hadn't pulled.

Yet this is now the same DM who has relaxed the rules on multiple copies of games for trade-in. As long as I have a receipt and the manager/employees are ok with taking them in I can trade in 3/4/5 of a single game if I so choose.

But after being a dick to that DM back then, I did tell him that I learned firsthand that due to so many people flooding the market just after they drop to a penny that these things are largely worthless.

I still do get the occasional one from a GS store here or there, but nowhere near some of the hauls I've pulled in times past. At least if the stores tried reducing them to $5-7 or so and it's not the current routine of either MSRP or nothing in many cases, then I think some of us would be content with buying them for a reduced price.

I found a bunch of BioShock 2 and Dead To Rights Retribution at a Portland, Oregon area GS.

I got 1 copy of the BioShock 2 guide. I have no interest In DTRR and am really only wanting the guides to the games I have. Not looking to resell either soooo...

I left a whole shitload on the shelves.

If anyone is interested in the location PM me. I'll share. No greedy f'ers please.

I didn't even bother going back last night for the DTR: R guide that the clerk I alerted about them being on the shelf said he'd save for me. But I did want to help them out and keep them from getting in trouble for having it out there, since this is the main GS I go to for multiple trades as of now.

Usually when you fetch 1 copy, you would be alerting them and they would pull them off the shelf after you walk out.

Anyway, PM on your way ;)

Ya I thought about that... But I also thought that if I walked up with 8 copies, I surely would have been denied. Also possibly ruining any future lax work on guide pulling at that location.

Trade off I guess.

I picked up 2 more Bioshock 2's today. I took the one in best condition up to the counter, and the guy said "Guess what? This is free!" Then he told me to pick up another copy for "ebay or something" before telling his co-worker that they needed to pull the remaining guides. There was only one left after I picked out my second copy, and that last one was in pretty bad shape.

A cool guy; hopefully that store will be lucky during the next drop also!

ROFL, gonna order some now, why not! no offense at all lox, but eff 'em! they do rogue pulls for the last few drops and now this. Managers who thought they were so high and mighty by having the guides pulled will now have a few trickle out the door from bb.com in-store pickups! classic

Good stuff Lox.

Was gonna pick up the Kingdoms Heart guide only to find that it is $5.49 shipping. Oh well. Still a great deal for those who want the guide for under $10.

sucks you don't have Premiere Silver Civickid, would have been free! I thought about that, but maybe more of a chance to get the order cancelled (?) although I know this was not the case for those the last time this happened.

Man I thought about e-hoarding these..I just randomly tried to enter 10 into my cart and it didn't object, but just grabbed 3 for now. The best thing is, I'm getting them from a store that is notorius for bashing all good BB CAG plans :D

edit: duh! looks like imma try shipping:

IIRC, the last time they did this, they did cancel some orders for multiple copies. I ordered 1 of each that I was interested in and got them for $.05 shipped with Silver. I just ordered one of each of these hoping for the same result.
