Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

haha! too bad that RE Chainsaw controller wasn't functional, they could have just kept one of those in the back room at each store!

I suppose I should update the OP and second post, huh? I'm gonna just mash these new drops in with the ones from last week, since I have a feeling that they DID drop last week.

It seems like the folks who used to check constantly on possible GS drops have been slacking off and not coming into the thread to report as much as of late.

Only reason I'm putting them with last weeks drop is because I haven't seen any of those guides since last week at GS, so they probably DID drop then.

EDIT: Second and third posts are updated.

It would be good to know if these recently discussed guides did drop last week, because if so, chances of getting them now are nil. I don't know how we'd know this, though. I guess we don't have a Frosty or Lox at GS.

I saw a pull stack at a store last week that included BS2 and DTR but did NOT include these recent guides, but that doesn't mean much - those guides may already have been given away or no longer in stock. I don't see GS stocking many copies of CE guides, for instance.

I'd check myself now, but GameStops around here are either far or difficult to get to because of lack of parking. It's far easier for me to check BB.
I just checked the MPT guide and it rang up at MSRP. Are these guides going to be pennied out tomorrow?
Did they do an override(aka hit a button or two on the keyboard for the register)? If a guide is coming up .01, it should be that price across the board.

My contact at GS is a manager so these did drop today since he gave me last weeks back then. They *could* be there if your GS is lax, but they have not been sitting there pennied since last week. For the last 6 mos or so I notice the guides have been dropping on Thur or Fri and haven't seen a Tues drop for some time now.

Ok, I've had the best night so far! It's been raining for like 6 hours straight here and I was nary motivated to get out and do this, but once I saw ragingstorm post that ME2 CE dropped, I had to go (I really did know where ;)) Go to the usual spot, scoured the racks for guides. Found 1 copy of ME2 still shrink wrapped. I glanced over the others, saw the Bioshock 2 and DtR:R that rang up MSRP on the Friday drop. (it happens kk012, it did to me!) So grabbed those two, w/ the CE and went to the counter. When, who I thought was the manager, rang them up he was a little shocked (even though it was the same exact crew working Friday night, who all were shocked about my inquiry then) I just looked at him with the biggest kitten eyes and said "Please!" He raised his eye to me, and I got all nervous, then he turns around to his boss, a female manager on duty. She had to think for a minute then realized she got the notice of the drop this morning, but was too busy to pull them. I told her that it was great for me she was busy and tried to butter her up. She started asking me how I knew and if there were anymore. CAG mode look-out kicked in and I said, "the internet is great!" and "I only know about these 3" (b/c at the time the other 3 mentioned this afternoon had truly slipped my mind) She ended up just giving them to me and I was on my way. Thanked her twice, it was awesome!

Then for the heck of it I stopped at another location which is notorious for pulling guides and even confirmed it to me on Saturday. Well sure enough the racks were empty a single penny guide. I'm on my way out looking at the little racks in front of the register and I spot Metroid Prime Trilogy. Grab it, go to the guy who wasn't the manager and he scans it, dumbfounded moment kicks in, asks manager. Great! Well he quickly explained to the other guy what the deal was and said, "must have missed that one" and handed it to me saying it was my lucky day. I think he has hooked me up once before.

So yeah, I can definitely confirm Mass Effect 2: CE and Metroid Prime Trilogy for a penny. Thanks everyone! :D

wait, I could have sworn I reported Friday that I saw on the screen Bioshock 2 and DtR:R for a penny on the first stop I made..guess I'm not leet enough :( But I can confirm it all now except of course the ones I didn't get (3 first mentioned today) ;)

Didn't know about MP: Trilogy, but the Gamestop I just hit had two copies of ME2. The guides rang up for a penny and the clerk didn't know what to do. He kept re-scanning them and starting new transactions to see if that would fix it. He finally asked the other guy who was there what to do, and the other guy said to sell 'em for a penny because someone forgot to pull them. Not bad!

I can confirm that Metroid Prime Trilogy and Mario & Luigi's: Bowser's Inside Story are pennied. I can't seem to find a copy of the Mario guide and that ME2 CE. Those CAGs able to pick up a ME2 CE are so LUCKY!!!

For months I have looked for penny guides and have never found any. I was starting to believe my wife's claim that they were only a myth and everyone on here was full of crap. I could not have been more shocked when I found not 1, but 2 guides today. I found Dead to Rights: Retribution at Babbage's in Portage, MI and Metroid Prime Trilogy at GS at the mall in Westland, MI. Thanks everyone for posting what has pennied out.

On a side note, both reps at each store told me that they are not supposed to sell those but their stores have been getting crappy scores on the customer satisfaction surveys, and if I promised to fill out the surveys with good scores, they would sell them to me. I figured it was a fair trade.

God dammit, all the Gamestops around me are very good at pulling guides. I've only been able to get guides from a GS once but other than that, they're really good about it. If only Best Buy would have a drop this monday, that would be absolutely awesome.

Confirming that Super Smash Bros Brawl pennied @ GS, just picked up a copy....

I checked the second post but did not see it listed...sorry if I missed it...I'm sure I will be corrected if it's there :)
Hrmm Halo ODST Guide is 4.99 @ BestBuy. Maybe soon to drop?
where you been kid? I think it dropped to this price exactly a week before the last official drop. Of course it will penny out with the next one. But either way, w/ rogue BB pulls, $5 isn't too bad at all just to secure it. I did! :)

Thanks for the heads up on another guide that dropped. If it's not in the second(or third) posts then it's new to me and will be added.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 hardcovers are gone. They're still full price but I checked random districs in Florida, Massachusetts, and Kansas and they're all gone.
Didn't this happen to the Fallout 3 hardcovers before the GOTY ones came out?

You're talking about BB right? I had one of those in my store i think, maybe I'll run in and check.

They've been gone for months from BB here. I never saw that many to begin with.

A while back I found the multiplayer map pack-in from the hardcover edition. Apparently the guide had disappeared and all that was left on the shelf were the maps. I didn't expect it for free, but I thought maybe $5 was a fair price. The cashier asked some manager, who wanted to charge me full price of the guide ($35?) less 10%, or something like that. Some people really do live in alternate universes.

I know someone already reported the 50% drop in price on guides at Blockbuster...
but just mentioning today they had
Red Dead for $10
Mario Galaxy 2 for $10
not great but not too bad ....

also
latest Pokemon gold/silver
COD MW2
and a handful of other titles...

I was seeking Alan Wake .... but it doesn't appear to be a title they ever received...

By the time you talk with other CAGs about game guide purchases or trades, you're likely to spend close to that on shipment alone.

$4.99 + tax, I can live with that for purchasing a guide at retail.

^This. I really wish there were more retailers that dropped prices down to $5 or so before pulling them. This seems to be the "magic" price point between a loss and recovering the expense from the publisher, because Best Buy does this on a store by store (manager by manager) basis. Of course, they may try to sell them at $10 first, but that's business.

went to GS yesterday and was denied penny guides. said that they should have been pulled from the racks and are not for sale. :( they had 8 ME2 CE's and 2 MPT guides. she said, sorry there not for sale. i said that i bought them before and it wasnt problem before. she than said, well that person is gonna get written up then. oh well. maybe next time.

If other retailers dropped guides down to $5 before pennying out, I'd be picking them up left and right at that price.

I'm just kicking myself for not getting the Star Ocean 4 PS3 guide when it was out, since it's now OOP and ridiculously hard to find.

I miss the days of EB Games taking in used guides and then selling them for $2-5. At least then you had a chance to perhaps find some older guides that might be 'omg rare' or at the least out of print without paying an arm and a leg for them online somewhere.

But I do agree that I wish stores would lower the prices on guides before pennying them out. It seems like BB and GS have two prices for guides anymore: MSRP or pennied. There is no in between price most times. It's either you pay retail for them, which was a little more tolerable about 2-3 gens ago when they were $10-15 MAX, or you don't get them when they penny many times anymore.

I certainly hope that the employee who gave/sold you them doesn't get in trouble for doing so. That's why if I even mention getting them I don't specifically say that I got them at that store.

BTW guys, if you can't find the more recent guides that dropped either in store or on anyone's TL, might I suggest checking out GoHastings.com.

They had at least 2-4 of the recent drops listed on their website for $1.99 a copy. Shipping is like $3-4 per guide though(since they ship from different locations usually), but $5-6 a guide still isn't bad compared to paying MSRP, right?

Wait, wut?! There's like 3 copies at my BB (as of 2 weeks ago)... Might have to swing by.

Which Star Ocean game are we talking about here? I have a few SO guides off to the side, though I think those might be the ones that frickin' Gamestop's people ripped the front and/or back covers off of.:bomb:

I think its the Last Hope (which I have one), unless its International. Hard to tell, the wiki doesn't lay them out numerically..

Ahhh. I think I had one of those, which I think I traded last fall for a new release game or something.;)

That's why half my TL says 'trade only' by the guides cuz I check the value regularly anymore. I'm not about to let another HL:RTB fiasco happen, like I did when I traded away the other copy I had w/o thinking to check it's value FIRST.:bomb:

I was hoping for 50% off Modnation Racers for my son. But Blockbuster doesn't carry it at all, and they also don't have any ads that mention the price. Has anyone tried in the past to pricematch a sale like this at Best Buy or Toys R US or Gamestop without a printed ad?
