Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
if a GS employee sells me a guide for a penny instead of just giving it to me, will he get in trouble? I kinda feel bad if he does.
In my area, the DM started cracking down on penny guides. So when a store that was normally cool about it denied me, we chatted about it. Nothing acrimonious. And I asked if it made a difference: selling or giving. In their specific situation, it did not.

Basically, if someone sold it for a penny, that person got in trouble. Because it shows up in the sale report. If they gave it away for free, then the whole store got in trouble. But this is only because the DM is making them turn over each and every book to him. If they don't turn it over, and it still shows up in inventory, he assumes they stole it (possibly for resale).

The one store that still gives me the occasional guide said the DM trusts him to throw the guides out himself. So he doesn't have to turn every single one over. To keep up appearances, he tries to hand over as many as he can, though.

I'm certain the rules vary tremendously from area to area.

Yeah I almost said to him "dude, you're supposed to just give it to me so it doesn't show up on the sales report."

I guess what you're saying is that if the DM is an ahole, it doesn't matter if they give or sell...?
if a GS employee sells me a guide for a penny instead of just giving it to me, will he get in trouble? I kinda feel bad if he does.
yeah, all the ones around here that I used to get them at always rang them out. Then for following drops they were all pulled. Always was getting the reason that the DM was cracking down, etc. etc. Now with my last few scores, all the stores just give them to me. Just last week this one manager told another employee to write down the guides I was taking and she would adjust it. Other stores where the do pulls and I find one left behind, I get those too. And those are the people that look at me and are pissed b/c I got it and they missed it.

Its all going to come down to the store specifically, even if there is an a-hole DM, resistance isn't so futile and I imagine they feel a little 'f-u' to their superiors..I also remember when my manager at GS made me rip the covers off guides and I would say 'it just isn't right!' sometimes even if I wanted them, I had to take the ripped ones..

I am so bummed! I went to BB in Portage, MI. I have been going to this store every few days hoping an employee would be cleaning the stockroom and put some penny guides back out. I thought I hit the jackpot today when they added a whole new rack with tons of guides that pennied out a long time go (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed being one of them). I grabbed a bunch and took them up front only to look like a douche because everything rang up at normal price except for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. At least I was able to get that I guess.

uhh MrSmiley, SW:TFU is the one guide that is infamous now for being there the longest without a drop at BB..or did you just mean it was among the penny guides? either way, at least you got one!
if a GS employee sells me a guide for a penny instead of just giving it to me, will he get in trouble? I kinda feel bad if he does.
Yeah. The employees have been in trouble before for selling me guides and I swear at one point their DM(same DM who now allows me to trade multiples of games as long as I have a receipt:lol:)had a photo of me up in every GS in his district saying 'DO NOT GIVE GUIDES TO THIS GUY'. Then again I was hitting stores far and wide in his district when gas was a bit cheaper.

Most times I would just come in, start looking at the rack and I'd get the 'can I help you' thing from one of them. Then even before I could ask for certain guides they'd mention not having the pennied guides.

Then again, I guess when ya get about 100+ outta one store that hadn't pulled them for over a year and had 3 racks and one of those big ass metal dump bins(like they use for the cheap PS2 games) over full with them I suppose you're bound to get a rep and be blackballed for a while.

Wow, I've never seen a store that had over 50 full price guides even in the store let alone enough that they had over 100 that were pennied.
Wow, I've never seen a store that had over 50 full price guides even in the store let alone enough that they had over 100 that were pennied.
At one point I think the employees that used to always sell me the pennied ones locally said they had a 2-3 year backlog of stuff that was pennied in the backroom. Apparently their manager and/or DM never said what to do with stuff that pennied, so they just kept it in the back waiting for word on what to do. I would've sold my soul to GS Corporate by becoming an employee just to see if it was true about the backlog of pennied stuff in the backroom.

Then I would've pulled up a list, printed that bitch up and gave it to a friend to use while I was working.;)

Then again the one GS in the one mall just over the NY state border with CT(up I-84)printed me up a list about like 2-3 years ago when I was up that way. I counted every listing and quantity up and they had apparently 100+ pennied guides in one back room or another.

I didn't know pennied guides can revert back to full price.
I didn't know pennied guides can revert back to full price.
They can't usually, unless you count that one messed up Best Buy drop where half of them 'unpennied', only to repenny the next month or whatever.

Unless a cashier is doing a manual override on the price and marking them back up without you knowing, once a guide pennies it should come up as a penny every time you find it at that same store.
Yeah I almost said to him "dude, you're supposed to just give it to me so it doesn't show up on the sales report."

If they sell it--it shows up as a penny sale.
If they give it to you--it is still in inventory and is now unaccounted for. Which a manager can treat as either incompetence or theft at their discretion.

Before we got so organized about buying (and for some of us--reselling) penny guides, managers let their employees dump them in the trash and manually remove them from inventory. But my guess is that someone noticed that days after a drop multiples of the GS penny guides show up in the local Half Price Books. And the DM in my area decided to take matters into his own hands.

It's all pretty weird. When I worked for a major book chain 15 years ago, we had to tear the covers off of books that were pulled from inventory. We sent the covers back to the publisher and got a partial refund. The store didn't care what we did with the rest of the books, as long as we weren't obvious about it. It worked well since the people who kept the coverless books actually wanted to read them rather than resell them.

So what happens if they see a penny sale? I heard there was some memo going around saying anyone selling guides for a penny would be fired. But I wonder if you did it out of incompetence once, maybe they let it slide.

My GS friend says its the DM discretion. Some are cool, and some are not. My friend recently got canned because he didn't get them enough preorders per week.
My GS friend says its the DM discretion. Some are cool, and some are not. My friend recently got canned because he didn't get them enough preorders per week.
ha! and that's why it never hurts if you make a nice haul with 3-4 guides to always throw $5 down on a pre-order. I always do just to be nice and it's a good way of saying thanks. Gives you time to schmooze a little too. Just preorder something way out there, and you can always go back and cancel it..

I remember my epic drop. 317 Penny guides from one gamestop in a mall. I think it was a similar situation. I got about 100 guides there were on the shelves dating back a year and the employee printed out a list of all pennied guides and went in the back and pulled them out. It took me 15 trips to carry em all to my car lol.

 DAMN!! I thought I was bad with the 100+ guides from one store. My car I had at the time was groaning and creaking the whole way home. Although that was nothing compared to when my one ex gf had two storage bins loaded with guides from my various exploits on our 'treks'(I knew my way around the backroads of NY/NJ/PA to every lil two bit mall in the middle of bumfuck after those trips)in the trunk of her Ford Taurus for over two years.

I kept saying I was going to get them outta her trunk and I finally did when she was about to get rid of the car 2-3 years ago. She probably went through 3-4 sets of shocks in the back on that car while they were loaded in there, but I always joked with her about having better traction in the winter cuz of having some added weight in the back of the car.;)

But I'm surprised it only took 15 trips for 300+ guides and not MORE trips. Those must've been some thin guides.

I used to have closer to 500 guides at one point. They were literally stacked and stored everywhere I could look in my house for a while. I think I'm back up close to 200 or so again, but I thought about making a guide throne out of the bulk of them and snapping a picture of it for my avatar on here for a while.:D

I don't have nearly enough of those to make a throne out of anymore, but I could probably make one out of these fuckin' game cases I figured alot of folks(who shop at Gamestop and get incomplete games)on CAG would want for $1-1.50 each.#-o#-o#-o

I hit 2 gamestops yesterday trying to pick up Assassins Creed 2 and Marvel ult alliance 2. One store they rang up for $20 each and the other one for $10 each. I watched the girl at the 2nd one and all she did was scan the bar code on the guides. That was the one for $10 each. I dont understand how this is!

#-o#-o#-o#-o#-o Second post on this thread has a list of guides which have dropped within the last six months or so. If you don't see a guide on there, chances are it HAS NOT PENNIED AS OF YET!?!?!?!

That may not work if the tv is $899.99.

I went to GS in Grandville MI on 6/9. I snagged both copies of their Bioshock 2 guides. The employee seemed baffled as to why they rang up a penny. I thought I was screwed and would be denied when he called his manger over to help him figure it out. The manger looked at me, looked at the guides, looked at the screen, and laughed. He said to just take them, voided the transaction, and said "Have a nice day!" I am still in shock.

I scored @ Best Buy today:

Mario & Luigi Bowsers Inside Story STILL SEALED
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of the Sky

Both in EXCELLENT shape!

That Pokemon guide is a BEAST...then again they normally are. After thumbing through it, I might pick up the game @ GS w/ some trade-in credit. It'll be the first Pokemon game I would ever played for more than 2 or 3 minutes.

Any thoughts on how good of a game it is? Also what/how is other Pokemon games better/worse?

That sale is super awesome. I picked up a guide for RDR and Borderlands at Blockbuster this weekend, $10 each. I almost missed the Red Dead guide due to lack of price tag/signage, plus it was in their magazine rack, behind a bunch of BS Justin Bieber magazines. Seems to be where they keep their newer guides, but it also rang up $9.99.

just wanna say thanks to everyone (and IATCG :) ) about the tip off for the BBV sale. Stopped by one during lunch to check for an RDR guide. They didn't have it. But all the guides were marked with a 'Sale' sticker for $10.00 even. They had some pretty good ones: LoZ:ST, GoW 3, Bioshock 2, AC II, Madden 2010, Pokemon Platinum, and that was about it. Nothing too new. They did have some graphic novels like Halo: Uprising and The Watchmen, but those didn't look to me marked down. The hunt is now on for that RDR guide for $10!!

I used the Red Dead Wikia site to 100% the game. It was one of the best game sites that I have ever used.

I really only buy guides because they're a penny. I don't actually "buy" guides, even for 1/2 off. I think the last one that I actually bought was Gears of War.

I came close to buying the one for Darksiders from GoHastings.com last month. It was only $1.99 on there for the longest time. With shipping it was like $5 something, which is about what I'd pay for it on the trading forum anyway.

But the prices spiked back up at the end of June, so I just have to hope that either they have another sale where it drops lower or I get it from the local shop for $1-2.

I had one offer from someone on here....for $10 for that one guide.

There's a couple of BBV's around here with God of War Collection guides. Time to stop on by and pick 'em up! Might as well grab any Uncharted 2 guides as well.

Kind of a cross-post, but if you have a Half Price Books nearby they are worth checking for Red Dead Redemption. They are having a coupon special this week, and I found pristine copies of RDR guide at 2 stores. $10 - 40% coupon = $6 out the door!

receipt scan or it didn't happen! j/k..I just can't imagine them having semi-new guides..isn't their stock only based on people selling them back?? I guess it's possible..
