Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

I'd gladly buy the few guides I truly want for $5 each if BB would drop all guides to that price before just junking them out. But unfortunately I have a feeling that the $5 price is going to be largely reserved for guides they have shittons of or on a store by store super highly YMMV basis for the rest of them.

Another candidate I see for the $5 pricepoint is the COD:MW2 softcover. My one local BB store has about 15-20 copies of that guide, so I could see that one going down to the $5 price.

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again now, I REALLY miss the days of EB Games selling used guides for $1-5 each.

If Gamestop ever did that, I know the guides would be priced based on Ebay value though, so no more getting good guides like the one for the original Silent Hill for $3 or so. Mind you, I'd also be selling them all of my multiple guides I have that have ZERO Ebay value, though I know they'd be worth a whopping $.20-.50 there probably.

i haven't heard that story old man..what was the gist with that? any guides you could get your hands on? was it prior to 2000? I bet it was heaven! can't even remember what the guide market was like back then, I will always remember PC guides, saw Official Nintendo Power guides every once in a while, but can't really picture guides for a majority of console games back in the early days..

Oddly enough I sold a Resident Evil (1) Gamecube Guide on ebay a few years ago for $50. I would have never guessed I'd get that much for it.

thats my magic price for guides aswell. top I'll pay for any guide that I really want is $5. theres just no way I can justify spending $15 or $35 on a guide that costs me just as much as a game or half price of a new game. EB Games was my used guide source back in the days before I joined CAGs and I do too miss it aswell very much.

I still can't believe their sorry excuse "they are taking up too much space" as their reason for stop taking and selling used guides before GameStop took over.

my BB also has a ton of Halo3 ODST guides (50 some), so much that they had to hide the majority of them under the racks of guide.

This is kind of funny, during the RPG glory days of the PSone I pretty much bought any guide at the time of the game purchase if they had one and the same for about half of the PS2 RPG life cycle... Well when I moved out of the Parents house at the time I didnt want to lug those with me and took boxes of guides and tossed them with the rest of the items I didnt want that went to the Dump...
I could kick myself for all the game items I tossed out over time if you could of known how valuable a bunch of it has become....

Its like the older Cartridge days..(NES-N64) I would buy those cart holders that looked similar to those ones that would have the sliding drawers for VHS tapes and put my games in there but never tossed any boxes and all the manuals etc.. and just put them away in larger boxes that managed to sit in the attic.. god so much went in the trash when i moved away hahaha

There's some guides I would have paid $10 for, but they won't even sell it for that. Now Star Ocean Second Evolution will probably never be mine =(

I just checked, as I swore I had a coverless version of SO:SE's guide, but I realized it was two copies of the SO: First Departure guide that the GS employees ripped the fuckin' front cover off of.

Mind you, I do have two copies of the SO: Last Hope guide.

I had to look, but I bought that one a few months ago at Half Price Books. It was clearanced to $1, but I had a coupon that dropped it to $.85! (No, that wasn't the only thing I bought with that coupon.) As a matter of fact, I just bought First Departure on Sunday for $4.50, again using a coupon.

Both guides were in very good (not pristine) condition. Perhaps you have some used bookstores you can try?

You two do know Second Evolution guide is like $70, right? =P

I have Book-Off near me, but not Half Price Books. I even looked for it at a Half Price Books in Seattle when I was there, and had no luck finding anything good.

If you have any Mega Media Xchange store near you they may be worth checking out.. they sell the guides they have both new and used for a flat rate of like $7.99

there is some good stuff there sometimes

I had no idea until I right after I posted. LOL. There is slight cover damage, so it probably isn't worth near that. I just wanted it as a guide.

The only one I freaked out about, since I had long ago given up, was Valkyria Chronicles. And damned if I didn't find 3 copies for a $1 each at the same store as the SO:SE! I think I bought 18 guides that day, most for $1-3. :D

50% off these guides Friday and Saturday only @ TRU:
Bakugan: Battle Brawlers
Final Fantasy XIII
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Track Collector's Edition
If you've got one of the $5 off any purchase coupons could make the Zelda guide $10.

Still a total newbie to this cheap guide stuff, but I'm almost sure I saw a Crystal Bearers guide behind the FFXIII guides yesterday. Definitely will check that out.

Just thought I would throw this out there - I went around a couple blockbusters today trying to find a damned dvd for my girlfriend and I saw that at every blockbuster I went to their guides had been reduced in price by I think half off.

ALL of the guides had stickers on them with $10 for softcovers. Only one of the blockbusters I went to had hardcover guides, but they had 3 god of war ultimate edition guides for 17.50 each.

Anyone else that can attest to this?

Has anyone tried the 20% off coupon on the Spirit Tracks guide yet? I want to know if it works...I'd pick one up if it does, if my Toysrus has one.

Yup. Discussed in this thread and in several others. Been going on for about a month or two.
lol, just found a Crystal Bearers, KH:358/2, and Army of 2 2 guide at BB. Gotta love when guides from June trickle back out.
Same thing happened to me the other day when I went to pick up FF XIII. Found a KH:358/2 and a Mario & Luigi. One even had a $.01 sticker on it. And this is a BB that is always on top of the pulls. Hopefully it means new employees.

But the last couple of times it was 'temporarily banned', but this time it's just plain old banned.

Suffice to say I guess I won't be trading him my COD:WAW guide for his Darksiders guide.

I too would like to know what he (Estebon) did AGAIN to get banned. And not temp banned. He was a laugh out loud riot.

Anyway, cant wait till I can actually get a penny guide again one day...

I just got back from my local BB and I got 4 guides for $1.00 a piece. They were ringing up at .01 but the manager said the only thing they could do is give them to me for $1.00 a piece. I was cool with that!

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Kingdom Hearts 358/2
Army of Two: The 40th Day
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

I also picked up the below for $2.25.

Indiana Jones and the staff of Kings

Well, I didn't get the penny deals but I will keep trying!

I didn't think Best Buy was allowed to raise prices like that. Oh well, I guess it didn't upset you much ;)

Not a clue. But I guess that means the other flipping social group can disband or be merged into yours now. Then again, the other flipping group(yours) hasn't had any activity since April.

Ok wow, now that's kool. I'm fairly new to CAG and just found this thread a few days ago. Gotta admit, I was a bit skeptical, but I'll be damned if I didn't just walk out of GS with a FREE copy of an Uncharted 2 Guide! It was the only one there, but there was also a couple of the Bioshock 2 guides. Since I don't have that game tho, I didn't want to push my luck on the one I definitely wanted :) Thank you very much gang!

I picked up a few guides at 90% off from Hollywood Video closing.

BioShock 2 $2
Blue Dragon $1
Ninja Gaiden II $1
Heavenly Sword $1
Star Wars: TFU $1
L4D $1
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon $1
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow $0.50

Some better guides were gone since I went there 2 days ago (75% off). I guess I went back too late.

You're quite welcome. It seems like the penny drops seem to follow a semi set pattern judging by when stuff dropped last year versus this year. So anyone want to speculate if we'll have a single guide drop at the end of this month like MGS4's softcover guide did last year.

If I had to wager on any guide to drop I'd put money on the Force Unleashed guide.

Speaking of The Force Unleashed guide, has it started to vanish from anyone else BB? Was at my local one the other day getting PoP:TFS and I only saw 2-3 of the guide instead of the usual 20+. Maybe they just moved them to the back or something, I honestly can't see it having sold that many copies recently lol.

i picked up a pokemon mystery dungen, WoW wrath of the lich king (excuse me if my spelling is wrong... haha), and mario and luigi guide for a penny each. i knew the pokemon guide was a penny since i got one at another best buy, so i just had the other two guides price checked. they both came up at a penny, and the guy scanned one of the guides a few times. then he asked me what i wanted to pay for the guides. ha. i already knew how much they were, so i said exactly that, and told him they were a penny. he gave them back to me and asked me if there were any more, and also asked how i knew the price. "internet". :D (is that generalized enough?)

he seemed very hesitant about giving me the guides for that price, but oh well. they definitely weren't on display a few weeks ago, and he told me they should have been pulled already.

Wow I feel like an idiot. I think I saw a Metroid Prime Trilogy guide yesterday along with an Uncharted 2 at Gamestop... If they still have them, I'm gonna be one happy ass camper. I've had the worst luck at getting guides from Gamestop but with Best Buy, I've had incredible luck. I picked up every guide from the last drop except for Darksiders. Maybe this is when my luck will change. I'm also moving next week so maybe I'll luck out even more and find some more guides near my new place.

Are these drops national, I saw several of the one listed but still labeled 19.99, only 0.01 was far cry 2 and I picked up 3 of those.

The trading thread is THAT way.------------->

A little bit of redemption for me today. I was at the Best Buy that turned me down for guides and there was one left on the shelf. I grabbed that and some printer ink (which I needed anyway) and took it up to the register where the same guy helped me out. He scanned the guide and said "We've been through this before, right?" He then wrote down some number (of the guide I think) and went to the back. The checker next to him had just finished helping out his customers so I grabbed my stuff, went to him and said "Hey, could you ring me up? This guy's taking forever." He scanned both items without blinking an eye. I paid as quickly as I could and as I was leaving I saw the other guy coming back and held up my guide as I walked out the door.

I've done that(holding up the guide as I'm leaving the store) before after getting a department manager who got all snotty at me, telling me I'll 'never get another guide for that price'.

What I find funniest though is that they try to give you the third degree and interrogate you about where you found out they were a penny from.

It's never smart to rub their nose in a glitch. That just makes them more likely to remember you and more likely to pull the other guides.

I was blackballed from getting guides for a cent from that store for a while, but during this last drop I found some that someone must've put back out by accident.

I just hope that corporate doesn't order another pre-pull during the next drop at BB or I'm completely screwed then.

I had no luck at my BB (6595 Strip Avenue Northwest, North Canton, OH). They had about 20 copies of Halo 3: ODST for $10 each I think. Then they had a few miscellaneous guides grouped with their respective games. Went to a Gamestop by Canton Centre mall on Tusc (still Canton, OH.) About to check the Atlantic blvd Gamestop tomorrow, will update.

The one BB I hit out towards the Meadowlands about 4 or so years ago had some pennied guides rubber banded to the games they were for(including the first 50 Cent game). It was the first time I'd ever seen a BB store trying to bundle a game/guide together.

I would probably buy more guides for more games IF they were bundled together and the whole bundle was like $40-ish, but paying MSRP for the guide and/or game is largely relegated to ones I doubt I'll ever find at a penny once they drop.

That Seacaucus BB was MY spot dude when I lived in NJ a few years back. They never, ever pulled and I always got tons of the games from the drops. They also used to mark some of their guides $0.01 which made it even more fun.
