I'd like to...

Tried searching on here and through Google to no avail due to everyone saying "cml" or "check my list" all the time.

Second and third posts are updated. I think someone in the discussion thread had one of the SKU#'s for one of the guides from GS, so I'll check there and see if I can find it.

Alrighty then. Adding those to the SKU post on the first page now.;)

EDIT: Added both SKU's to the GS portion of the SKU list wiki. Thanks Gwen, Ultragamer and anyone else who provided info including verifying drops.

Dang, I lucked out today with 3 Halo: Reach LEs. Also, just to give a heads-up, the Gamestops at Germantown and Oxon Hill, MD (not Eastover Square) and Springfield, VA (in the mall) don't have any copies left.

Bastard, well at least you missed at least 1 @ the Oxon hill store  AND

While hunting for Halo Reach LE guides and the one @ springfield (not in the Mall), clerk was like " you want a Pandora's Box?" I was like "Sure. Can I have the game too?", lol

"No, we have to throw away the box but keep the game"

Free Pandora's box and art book.

The reason I asked because a long time ago, when gs gave $80 credit for xbox 360, they said, well, the fan is load, I give u $20 trade in. I end uptaking it to another GS (out of state while visiting a friend) and got $100 in trade credit.

Do u shop at the Germantown store regular? Do u have a good relationship?
Does he ring it up or hand it out free? Asking cause they never give me guides.

That probably took some time and waste of gas, but good to hear u got something. I never have luck at GS.

I paid the $0.02, and I didn't need to ask for them since the guides were still on the swerving display, so I just took them up to the counter.

That's cool. Most got lucky. The other guy probably would had to change the price.

I managed to find a copy of Halo Reach CE at one gamestop, they gave it to me for the penny. This was the 2nd time I ever found a guide at gamestop and they rang it out, they typically just hand it over.

Okay guys, long time lurker here. I have a few questions. Yes, I am still kind of a newbie, if you don't want to help, don't reply. If you do reply, thanks for your time.

Took my first trip to Gamestop today to look for any guides on the list. I was smart, I didn't bring a list in or anything. I was mainly looking for guides I actually wanted (DA, DA:O, ME2). I got into Gamestop and noticed two copies of Mass Effect 2. On the drop list, it is listed as Mass Effect 2, no CE/SE or whatever. The guides I saw there were soft-cover, so they should have been the right ones.

I took them up to the counter and they rang up as $18.22 or something around the middle $18 range each. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I went up there. I didn't have enough money in my wallet to pay for full guides (And I wouldn't have bought them for full price anyways), so I apologized and put them back on the shelf.

I don't understand why they rang up full price. Can anyone explain?

Also- How do you guys find out which ones have pennied? Do you take them up there and have them ring them up? What if they are not pennied? Obviously one isn't going to waste $20 on a guide, so what do you tell the cashier? I'm looking for tips on avoiding an awkward situation like I experienced --- if I ever decide to look again.

Thanks for the help, if anyone takes the time to reply.

How old is the list? If it did say it without the LE or CE, then it should be penny out, but YMMV since they can alter the price at the register.

There are 2 versions of the softcover Mass Effect 2 guide. One is the early one which is pennied and there is a later release with PS3 and DLC coverage. The one that is not pennied says "covers all DLC" on the spine.

On the main list (Is that what you are referring to?) it says that Mass Effect 2 dropped on 1-26-11.

Does the altered price (The $18) show up immediately? I wasn't really sure where the item indicator was and I looked around for a few seconds and then realized it was on the counter. Once I looked, to my dismay, I saw them both at $18 whatever. Think he could have switched it before I noticed?

The guy seemed pretty cool- but his manager was working alongside him.

I don't live in a very populated area (Well, the GS is located outside a decently sized city, but probably a 30 minute drive from the city). Think maybe they already know about this and therefore just don't honor the penny price?

Ah, that is probably it. OP should edit his second post and clarify this.

Thanks!

Chances are you brought up the version of the guide that includes a section for the PS3 version that just came out recently. Either that or the employee noticed the pennied price and did an override to MSRP, though I believe the ME softcover guide was $19.99 before it pennied, so chances are they just did an override to some random amount since you said it came up $18 something.

As for how to find out which ones pennied, many simply add every guide that's up on Gamestop.com to their 'wish list' on there and when they drop from their wish list then they know they've pennied. But for Best Buy we have to wait and hope that either Lox or Frosty gets a list or folks are willing to go in on the first Monday of a month to scan some guides to see if anything dropped.

I usually double and triple check which version of a guide I have in my hand anymore to make sure I have the correct one before going to a register. Then again I follow guides a bit closer than someone who might just be starting out at trying for this deal, so I know when there's like 3-4 versions and which one(s) have dropped. Of course IF they're going to sell it to you for a penny is another story entirely.

Ok seeing as this is actually a legitimate question, I'll answer it.

The problem with the Mass Effect 2 guide is there are 2 versions of it(if you go to bestbuys site and look up mass effect 2 game guide you can actually see both). One came out with the original Xbox360/PC version, this is the one that pennied. Recently with the release of the PS3 version they came out with a new guide that covers the game and all DLC which comes with the PS3 version. this is probably the guide you found. The confusion is very easy to make, the version your looking for is one without the sticker on it saying "includes all dlc" or something of that nature.

As for finding out penny guides, for gamestop we usually find out from people who hear from employee's. Gamestop drops tend to be a bit of a pain since there's not always a general list and the information just comes from multiple sources typically after finding out more guides that penny.

For bestbuy, we have Lox who actually works there and can get the inside information on guides that will drop.
It's not just about the money they get from Prima. If you knew you were gonna get a guide at a penny eventually (with game purchase), you have no incentive to buy either the game or the guide until it does penny out.

They don't want you to condition yourself to think this way. That's bad for business. Plus, publishers would go apeshit.

Hell, most of us won't even buy guides at $3 because of what we know about penny drops. They dont want that type of behavior.
I believe most CAG's would buy CE/LE at $3 a pop. I also believe people who want to be the first to crack the game or be the top scorer will buy the strategy guide at full price.

And who cares about the publisher? What else are they going to publish?

And I read somewhere that BB gets fined $1000 for selling a penny guide? If you believe that I have a nice bridge in SF I'm trying to sell. PM me, maybe I'll trade it for some guides!

 If BB/GS gets fined $1k for EACH one sold, then I've probably cost both companies at least a million dollars combined since I started grabbing these things.:whistle2:#

But what still irks me is it's a choice between either paying MSRP for these or hoping you can buy them for a penny or get em free when they drop. There's NO middle ground, except for in RARE cases like Gamestop's glut of Final Fantasy XII LE's($14.99) they haven't pennied yet or the shitton of Halo ODST($5) guides that Best Buy FINALLY pennied out.

Moreover, who the fuck is still buying these that Prima/Brady/DoubleJump are still printing so many of them? With the internet and tons of places on it to find FAQ's for games(many of them leagues better than the 'official' ones) I gotta wonder who besides Joe Football and Suzy Soccermom is still buying these overpriced things.

Whoa Whoa! Don't go giving them ideas to stop... I enjoy buying them very much... for a penny that is. I dread the day when all books, magazines and other lit. goes electronic completly.

Also I find that if i'm unable to get a guide that drops, I can usually pick it up of amazon from the merchants who are more happy to undercut each other. I can usually find them for somewhere in the range of 5-12 bucks, which isnt to bad if its one that i really want.

If BB ever did like TRU and stopped pennying them, I would just wait till a sale of 5/$25 popped up for books on GoHastings.com and then wait for their usual Weds/Thurs free shipping day.;)

I dunno, I'm a bit of a collector, so I still tend to pre-order CE guides off Amazon if I'm interested in them. I regret it a bit (especially in the case of Halo Reach), but I justify it by the discount Amazon gives, the credit I have, and how I'd feel if it actually pennies out and I actually can't pick one up for a penny.

And I really like high-quality books, even though online references can sometimes (and usually are) more accurate/complete. Support FuturePress and Piggyback!
