That Hastings thread got me thinking. Are there any other places to dump guides for a few dollars a piece? It's an obvious question, sure, but I never actually looked into it. I'm running out of room (like I'm sure many of you have been for years) so I'm just curious if any has any good spots on the east coast.

I've been dumping mine at the local shop for the past few years, though since they give cash and not in store credit, I've been receiving only a fraction of what the people in the Hasting's thread have managed to get.

Then again I think I tossed them 600+ guides in one shot, with most of them only being worth about a buck each on Ebay at that point, so I didn't feel too bad getting a quarter a pop for most especially since 90-95% of them have sat on their shelves and collected dust since then.

The only one or two I let go to them that turned out to be worth anything was one copy of Xenosaga III's($30 guide) guide and I think I may have accidentally let go of a Half Life: Raising The Bar($100 out of print book now) to them as well.

That's great. I mean, even getting a quarter a piece is a 2500% profit. Would local pawn shops accept them? I've never given anything to a pawn shop in my life.
The second to last Monday is when all the latest BB drops have happened. I wouldn't be surprised if a drop happened today. I'm stuck in school at college until 5:00 today... is anyone else planning to check for drops?
Nice prediction!

The pawn shops here never wanted to take them, unless I gave them to them for free. Same deal with the games unfortunately. Even if I got an insane deal and scored games for $3-4 each, they would wanna gimme $1-2 each and then sell them for $20-25 each.

That's why I envy alot of people in the pawn shop thread, since our local two pawn shops are run by the same bastards and they NEVER have a deal on ANYTHING....unless it's somehow broken(they had a 27" tv with no remote and the on/off switch was busted on it for $20).

I had a good find on Monday. I haven't had any luck at my BB in several months, but I was checking Disk Replay while I was in the area. While there, I found this.

This is something that I've been wanting to find for a while. It's not in as good as condition as I would have liked, but I still picked it up. Normally, they don't take guides, but I guess the person trading the game in also had the guide. I asked if I could buy just it and I got it for $5.

This place seems dead, but just a quick heads up. I think Monday will be the next BB guide drop.

If you're working Frosty, make sure to check when you get a chance. I think most of the guide drops will be the ones that have been reported as pulled already at most BB stores. I hope I'm wrong, though. I'd love to see Star Ocean: The Last Hope pennied.

I have been anticipating tomorrow also seeing as for the past 2(3?) months it has been the 3rd monday of the month.

Saw all of these online for a penny, couldn't check Little Big Planet or Star Ocean (360) since they ain't on the website.

Tomb Raider: Underworld
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Street Fighter IV
Infamous
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (9101633)
UFC 2009 Undisputed
Gears of War 2 (Game Guide) with Best Buy Exclusive 12-Month Calendar
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Fallout 3
Wolfenstein
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Fossil Fighters
Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings
EA Sports Active
Cheat Code Overload 2009 (9352899)
NCAA Football 10

Little Big Planet and Star Ocean: The Last Hope(or whatever the 360 title is) are confirmed. I picked up both today.

From the Reduced Price Guide Thread (thought the tone might be more suitable here):
Just went out to get the mail and there was a box from Best Buy. My shipment of penny guides arrived. Opened it up (only bought 5, no doubles) and instead of Fallout 3, I got Fallout 3 GOTY. Sweeeet! I'd buy that for a nickel! I am missing one guide, but I think I'll let it slide.
Storytime, children.

So the Muramasa guide pennied at GS today. Around these parts, getting pennied guides from a GS anymore is a fool's errand. Tonight, I decided to be that fool. I really wanted the Muramasa guide.

Struck out at the first four locations. Some of them had them in the back, but wouldn't sell. No problem, on to the next. Finally scored at the fifth location...and quickly left as the manager came in from the back. Hopefully, I didn't get that nice girl in trouble.

All in all, I hit 5 locations over 1.5 hours (navigating traffic/construction/broken-down vehicles), risking a night on the couch if I didn't get home within a reasonable time frame, and finally got the one guide I was after! Was it worth it?

I spend quite a bit of time entering contests on Twitter. Earlier today, I entered a Twitter contest for a Muramasa guide. When I got home, I got the DM notifying me as a winner.

I'm not going to mention that to the wife.

:applause:

Also, how much does 1 1/2 hours worth of gas cost versus an 1 1/2 hours worth of working? Probably enough to order a guide. But if you're like me and you just like to get out :bouncy:

I picked up the muramasa guide for a penny at my first gamestop. The guy did a double take on the price....The look on his face was priceless, but the look on my face when I realized I did'nt have a penny was even more priceless...I had to break a five :bomb:

does B&N participate in these drops, there's a link in the current thread (that's been closed) but none of the drops list B&N exclusively

You will never get a penny guide a t a book store since book store employee are trained to pull out penny books
Yes. Also, less lurkers from other sites would see the drop info.
I support this, lol! Make the lurkers work for their hauls, haha.

You guys need to not hype drops before they happen, there is NEVER a guarantee that a drop will happen.

If they didn't drop today, there won't be another possibility of a drop until the third Monday of next month. Please don't start this hype train again before the possible drop next month, it makes it harder for everyone that actually checks the thread religiously to find guides as the constant thread bump tips off newbies and lurkers and gets them in on the deal. New CAGs + deals usually blows the deal for everyone else because they do the most stupid stuff (calling to confirm, asking CS reps where the guides are, not waiting for a drop confirm, etc.).

Keep this thread quiet until a drop happens. Frosty, if you see any more guides drop to discontinued or deleted, it'd probably be best to post that info in the discussion thread so it doesn't confuse people into thinking a drop happened.

Yea, that is what I was getting at when I posted on Friday about trying to stop the hype wagon from taking over the thread. As soon as I started seeing posts about "EPIC" drops and how there was "supposed" to be a drop on Monday I warned people, neocisco backed it up, but the hype train left the station and 10 pages later here we are with no drop.

Frosty suggested we use the discussion thread for all this talk leading up to things and I think that is a good idea. Once someone actually confirms a drop then this thread should be used. Keeps it alot cleaner here and if you want to avoid the hype and speculation posts you can just subscribe to this one and check the discussion one at your leisure.

Ehhh it doesn't matter. You'll never be able to police the discussion part out without the mods having to do all sorts of work and people getting pissed that their posts are being deleted.

Stupid people who get hyped about impending drops then bitch and moan about them deserve the angst.

I think most of us just sat on the sidelines and waited for confirmation.

Heh, think someone else finally hit up the Best Buy I usually go to. Last time I was there in late January they still had around 5-6 Gears of War 2 guides (and that was after I had bought a dozen or so lol). Go in today to pick up Fringe S1 for $9.99 and lo and behold no more GoW 2 guides. There was also a random, semi beat-up Ghostbusters guide that I know was not there before (not sure what's up with that) so I went ahead and grabbed it.

Yea, I know its not going to happen, but we can dream right? ;)

It is actually pretty funny how this thread starts blowing up as soon as someone posts about a potential drop. People come out of the woodwork because this thread is in the deal forum. Then if the drop doesn't happen the bubble of irrational exuberance gets popped and people are angry, but if the drop does go down we get alot of "grab them shits" posted, which do make me chuckle a bit (at least the first few posts of the line).

I just have to remember to cut my thread notifications to once a day instead of instant when the hype/anger starts taking over the thread.

Maybe because it clutters up a thread which isn't supposed to be used for pointless discussion, but actual price drops and confirmation of pennied out guides.

With all the garbage posts (see last 3 days as examples) it makes it that much tougher for people who are trying to check this thread on a regular basis for actual, you know, REAL information on guide drops, that much more difficult.

...but the first and second post are kept pretty much up to date, and those garbage post to look through would only take a minute or two of your time, so it's not difficult at all...unless you find reading difficult.

Oh please... I woke up this morning.. and despite the clutter I saw that there was no drop and went back to sleep. If there was a drop the clutter would turn into actual drop info. That's always a good way to gauge whether there was a drop. Can anyone honestly say they sifted through 10 pages in a thread looking for drop info that they might have been missed because of clutter and was worried that it wasn't already posted in the first page.

If anything the clutter makes it difficult for IATCG only.

Yea man, I am sitting here disappointed and angry because of all of these posts in the thread. How did you know?

Like it was stated by lawdood and others, all that BS just clutters up the thread. It is bad enough people keep asking the same things over and over in the thread even though the OP is very well maintained, but now we have people posting for 10 pages about an "epic" drop that didn't happen.

What is so hard about keeping this thread on topic? You post about guides you know that dropped in this thread, you post everything else in the discussion thread. Doesn't seem hard to me?

By that same token, in the first thread there's also a link to the GUIDE DISCUSSION THREAD.

While I give him kudos for his OP, often times if there is a drop, one needs the info ASAP the morning of.

Also, in the past, often employees of BB get heads up the weekend prior to a Monday drop to actually confirm there'll be one and a couple of times I believe, vahn even posted the guides that were dropping well ahead of that Monday.

These are the posts some of us come into this thread to look for prior to Monday as well as first thing Monday morning.

Instead of people jumping on people like me who are complaining about the clutter and discussion taking place here which shouldn't be, why don't those people simply shut up themselves, pull their heads out of their behinds, and post in the guide discussion thread that's been created for those very posts. Why so much hostility against people who are actually trying to get people to follow the rules?

Guide beggar or Forum nazi?

I don't know if this means anything, but...
I went to BB this morning when they opened. I went down to the guide section and saw an employee there with a list. He had a black shirt on (not blue - btw anyone know what that means?) So he went through the guides one by one and put select titles into a plastic container marked property of BB. After he finished, he locked it and carried it to the employees only room. While he was doing this, a real customer (unlike me) came by and asked for help finding a game. As soon as he was out of sight, I started to rummage through the guides. i didn't see all the titles he put in the box because he came back shortly (under half a minute). I did notice Brutal Legend, Saw, Ratchet and Clank (CiT?), TMNT Smash, WWE 2010, and GTA (CTW?). Again, not really sure if this is important or not.

That's usually what they do when they pull guides which have been pennied. Interesting.

Well there was that time several months ago where they actually pulled guides a few weeks before pennying. That was when the original Fallout 3 LE guide started to disappear from store shelves in mass quantities. An employee posted they were given the directive to pull a few guides (that being one of them) before actually being pennied.

Hmm we have a conspiracy theory here now :)

Hopefully this doesnt mean guides being pulled for being pennied out :(
