Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread

Struck out at my BB (which hasn't happened in the the year I've known about penny guides). They had them gone and out upon opening. At least I did ok at GS...

I went to 3 Best Buy locations in SoCal. I got:

Soul CaliburIV LE (1)
Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood (2)
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (2)
Final Fantasy Ring of Fates (7)
Ninja Gaiden II (4)
Assasin's Creed (3)
Final Fantasy IV (5)
Dragon Quest IV (5)
Final Fantasy Tactics (2)
Mercenaries 2 (2)
Spider-Man Web of Shadows (1)
Spectrobes Beyond the Portals (1)

I grabbed a shopping cart on one of them :) All the cashiers were kind enough to let me grab more when I was going to pay.

Thanks Vahn
Ok, I checked the BB in racine and kenosha.

Came out with 8 madden LE"s, a spore, two mercenaries, and a ff IV. otherwise, they were cleared out.
why would u take 8 maddens?

From talking to the employees at 3 BB's I went to today, most everyone who was in on the drop acted honorably and only bought 10-30 guides at most.

I didn't pick up much this time. There was too many to do duplicates. I just wanted to grab stuff for me. The only one I picked up an extra of was Fable 2 LE. I am tempted though to go back tomorrow and pick up some of the stuff I missed if it is still there. I missed a couple of the Final Fantasy guides.

Man...I had the Warhammer Online and Ninja Gaiden 2 guides in my hands and even one of the employee's told me they were both a penny...yet at the cash register they weren't on file and the dude said I couldn't get em. :(

Go back tomorrow and go to a different cashier. The first was lying.

I picked up eight guides from a nearby BB - my first big haul. They had dozens, but I only got one each of the ones I wanted. The interesting thing about it, though, is that they had most of the guides MARKED as a penny. Pretty weird! The two cashiers who were there were pretty amazed, though neither questioned the deal. One of them was actually going to grab the last LO guide after he finished ringing up my items...
It's really shocking to me that there is so much hoarding going on when there are so many CAG's struggling to get guides.

It's like waving a 5-course meal in front of a starving, homeless person and not sharing. I'm surprised posts like that are allowed to stay up on this site. If you are going to grab 70 guides, then you need to offer them to CAGs who couldn't score.

People complain about the stuff in this thread leaking to the "hoarders" at FW and SD, then act exactly like them.
CAG has been slowly changing when it comes to tolerating what we all know as "hoarding" IMO. I remember awhile ago somebody posting about games for sale including highly sought after games, he had about 20 copies of a game that was selling online for what it originally retailed for or more and I figured that people would complain and try and tear the guy a new asshole when they saw his list of his stockpile of extras but instead everybody kissed his ass and mentioned what a great feat it was to acquire so many extras lol

Your "It's like waving a 5-course meal in front of a starving, homeless person and not sharing." comparison if not perfect does get the point across perfectly still lol
There's something I don't really get. How do the publishers know that the guides are destroyed? Some might say that they just have to send the UPC cover back to the publisher, but we know that's BS.
The one guy at GameStop used to just let me have the guides when they rang up a penny instead of selling them to me for .01 if I found any on the shelf. It made sense as it didn't get him in trouble for selling it for .01 and the store would still get credit I would think as it could still be taken out of the system. I always figured that it was like a loophole exactly as your saying here since I got the guide and the store would (most likely) get credit for it even though it really wasen't destroyed or thrown away.

I always see CAGs (more so CAGs new to penny guides) wonder why they must be trashed pointing out what a waste it is. If everybody knew about penny guides nobody would want to buy them which isn't good for business. If you do find any penny guides, to the employee that knows about them and is sternly told not to sell them at all means possible I'm sure keeping a job is more important to them then helping out a bargin hunter.

The 2/2 Price Drop is Officially Dead...

I was at a Best Buy that I had visited twice earlier today and had good finds. I was returning to pick up the FF guides for CAGs, and everything had been pulled from the list. I asked one of the CSRs working if they had any of the Fable II LE Guides and she said that they had received a notice from corporate at about 3 PM EST that all guides on the list should be pulled immediately and sent to a corporate warehouse. The girl said that it was a memo that came from corporate via the DM.

It looks like the only way you are going to have a chance in hell at getting one is if they somehow forgot one and even then it more than likely won't work. I had hid one earlier and when I tried to purchase it a memo came up saying that the item couldn't be sold.

Wow, really? Could this be the death of the Best Buy penny guide?

I had one last stash of hidden guides that I wanted to pick up tomorrow. Crap.

How could a memo come up? I believe it happened but I thought the systems can't be updated like that and usually only occur once a day so it couldn't be updated that fast. If that is the case, I was going to try to get Warioland Shake It that I saw earlier today (must have missed it on the list), I'll still try since it's only 5 minutes out of my way going home from work.

You're exaggerating. Corporate tells all of them to do this. The employees really don't care though since they buy some too. The employee that told you that told you the full idea and story behind penny guides though.

Well that explains it... I went to my best buy around 4ish... and it was all gone.

I am hoping maybe come next month this will be long forgotten and we will have another opportunity to take advantage of some penny guides. I called my brother back home to have him check for me and so far he has
reported 2/2 on them being completely pulled and out of sight.

The worst was that I could tell the CSR tonight wanted to help me out, but she knew that she couldn't. When I asked about Fable, she just kind of paused then explained that they had them and they weren't allowed to sell them since they had been informed from corporate. I tried to play the "I was in here yesterday and wanted to get it, but didn't have the money on me at the time" card and everything.

Huh? That's what they're supposed to do anyway. What's with the melodramtic post? That's how it's always been at Best Buy. The idea is to, hopefully, get in there and get the guides before they are pulled.

If that is the case then why are they sometimes tagged for a penny? It doesn't make sense to take the time to price them for a penny if they aren't meant to be sold.

I don't ever remember them being pulled like this, I was 3 weeks late on the last drop and still found everything.

Ah yes exaggerating... That explains why more than 3/4 of the people have not found them at all today and more than likely almost every person hasn't had luck since that time...

I am not disputing that this hasn't always been the case... I am just telling you the mere fact that corporate finally had enough and decided to crack down on the whole ordeal. I mean after all they can do whatever they want now that they are king of electronics.

Dude it is always like that. Every single time there is a drop, there are a bunch of posters that hit the jackpot and some who find nothing. Some employees are doing their job as they should. Some, like the ones at mine, don't care. Heck, they even put $0.01 price tags on them.

I went at 7pm today and got more guides

5 Spore LE
2 Fable 2 LE
Assasin's Creed
FFXII
Sonic Dark Chronicles

Total of about 45 guides, and mostly all the big rpg ones. I could have gotten alot more but i don't want 20 copies of Fracture and Hellboy sitting on my shelf.

Cashier knew they were pennied and said people had been buying em all day.

On a side note I got extra's of all the major guides but couldn't find Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY :whistle2:(

MELODRAMATIC REPLY TO MVP828'S MELODRAMATIC POST!

mvp I found plenty of guides that hadn't been pulled
when i went to my BB at 1 PM EST and then again at 4:45 PM EST..and no signs of anyone caring to go pull them too! so...O_O

That's all the confirmation we need. By the way, PMd.

You seem to be missing the point... Obviously it has always been hit or miss, but look at the big picture. People who have never had a problem getting penny guides can't get one for the life of them now.

Good to hear, I was getting nervous but am going to try since it sounds like it was only that one store.

LOL....nice :applause:

I thought I did poorly, but apparently I did much better than everyone else. Of course, I had three people covering eight different stores in two cities.
I scored at the first store I went to at opening, while the employee's were emptying the shelves as I raided them. I was going to leave the "Soul Calibur IV: LE" guides for other CAG's, but once I saw this, I just took all 4 of them.
The final store I checked had pretty much all of the guides, except for "Fable 2: LE" and "Wario Land: Shake It!!" My store still had ~75% of all these guides still there, on the sales floor.

The big picture I'm seeing is some people getting guides and some people not getting guides.

Not too surprising.

Nah, dude. You're wrong. None of my Best Buys ever EVER pull guides. Two of them did today and I'm sure the third will have them pulled by tomorrow. Best Buy has always been a reliable place to score penny guides (as opposed to Gamestop) for many people here.

As far as the register not allowing the sale though, I'm not sure about that. I managed to snag some guides at around 7-ish tonight. I still think that Best Buy is getting wise and sending out more memos to remind employees to pull guides. I was under the impression that my Best Buys didn't even know the guides were supposed to be pulled before.

No, he's right. Look at all the people still scoring guides today. It's how it always is: some people score, some don't. Today is no different.

Now, if nobody was able to score a thing, then you'd have a point.

My point is still valid. Some people score and some people don't when Gamestop has a drop. Not Best Buy. Generally, when Best Buy is involved, it's hoarders that take the guides.

Those who have Best Buys that regularly pull guides don't even post to mention that their guides have been pulled. They know the routine and there's no point. I've seen many more people state that their guides have been pulled when they went fully expecting the guides to be there.

Here's my point. Another memo went out today. One in addition to the one they usually get in order to spur some action. I don't think the drop is "dead" but I think Best Buy might be starting to get more cautious. But I don't really care if you believe me or not. I hope I'm wrong.

Maybe at your store. I got the bulk of my guides at 1:30 and had no problem buying more at 7:00. Another of my friends hit up a different store and got 30 guides around 4. None pulled any here.

I should also mention their are still DMC4 guides and Bully Scholarship Edition guides on the shelf as well.

This. My BB that had multiples of most of the guides last night and was empty this morning. I was the first customer in the store. They had 7 people working with hand scanners and black crates in other sections. I think the same thing happened last year at my store with the big drop.

Hopefully they will go back to being lax next drop, but this one was definitely different than usual.

Yep. I've always been able to get $0.01 guides at the Best Buy by my job. Today was the first time I was unable to find (or get) anything that was dropped.

I was at 2 stores between 2 and 230. Neither stores have ever pulled any penny guides in the past year. Today, neither of them had a SINGLE THING. At least one of the best buys had a ton of the penny guides a few days ago.

My BB had pulled them all by the time I got to the store at 1:30. Luckily, I hid a couple of them yesterday and was able to pick up those no problem. They did have a couple copies of Burnout Paradise for 39 cents which I found odd.

Yeah, the deal might not be dead, but there're notices going around to perk some interest at some Best Buys that didn't care before. And I think that your Best Buy may use the memo they got today to pull those guides before opening tomorrow. But I hope you get lucky and that doesn't happen.

Also, the DMC4/Bully guides were part of an earlier drop and obviously not part of the memo. I had no problem finding older penny guides at all. This only reiterates the fact that a memo went out specifically regarding the drop TODAY. Not earlier drops. Employees had lists of the guides to pull from today's drop.
Also FYI a few of my guides are tagged at $.01
That doesn't mean anything. You got lucky. That's great. I know that some Best Buys tag some of their guides a penny. It's not unheard of. Hell, I saw some Army of Two's tagged a penny today. Your Best Buy probably didn't even read the memo that came in.

both of guardians posts are correct.

I seem to recall bestbuy doing something similar about 2 years ago. The result being a few stores cracked down for 1 drop and then did nothing once DM forgot about it and moved on to next issue of the week.

Whether you care or not, your point, while valid, is just conjecture, but that doesn't change the fact that lots of people have scored lots of guides, so it just depends on an individual store basis, like it always has. Unless the DM is going to each store him/herself, then getting guides is as it always has been at BBY: YMMV.

I think I am going to have to see if I can hide some next time. also I can't trade but does someone who got the Fable LE want to maybe let me pay for it ?
Has anyone seen any copies of Fable 2LE or Civ Rev around the OC?
4 stores and seen none

but otherwise if i had to rate the booty of this drop, I think I'd go J Lo Big

Some guy kept questioning me making sure I didn't work for Best Buy because the store I went to had no idea that these were dropped to a penny. I had to tell him though that the info was from "online". He did say I could get them but only one each. OK! lol

Went back tonight and picked up 9 more guides. The Warhammer Online guide rung up at full price though...same thing with Zelda: TP (but I didn't see Wii version mentioned anywhere on the package). There was also a special edition Warhammer Online guide that came with something else, could that have been the one that dropped?
