Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread
Anyone else considering picking up the fallout 3 CE guide? I've heard it's getting harder to find.
I think most people are waiting until it's pennied, same for the GoW2 guide. But I have a feeling both will be hard to come by when they are pennied.

There was a bit of excitement on the Reduced Price Strategy Guide thread when someone was able to pick up some Halo 3 guides that had been manually priced at a penny. I was able to pick one up several weeks back that had been priced at $2.50 to satisfy my need for instant gratification. Since I already have one, when they finally are pennied I don't even know if I would pick one up if I happened to be in the store. There are so many of them it seems they would be worthless for trading. It seems to me everyone would have multiples.
It seems to me everyone would have multiples.
If the BB near me doesn't pull them upon being pennied, I'll have tons of them. They've literally got half of a shelf dedicated to Halo 3 guides. Probably around 50 of them at that one store.

Thought I should post this here as it does not add any information about what has pennied for the main Reduced Guide Thread. Went to several Gamecrazy's and came away with all guides except Rogue Galaxy.

Wow, I feel kind of lonely in here.....

It just isn't very satisfying to crow about the deals you found when all you get back is an echo. I guess I should just post in the Reduced Guide Thread like everyone else. *sigh*

Is the avatar too threatening? Perhaps I should switch back to the little bearded blue guy in a red suit.

No man, I like the avatar. Up the Irons!

The thread always dies in between penny drops. It'll pick up for about a week when the next drop happens and then die out again quickly thereafter.
anyone want to sell a MGS4 guide?

or like.. go to a store and u see it pick me up one? :)
There are several at my BB but I don't think they're pennied?

I'm a little disappointed with the Persona 4 guide. It's cool that it's shaped like a TV guide, but I can't help but feel that a Brady/Prima size would be better.

It's not shaped like a TV guide. That guide style is pretty much standard for Double Jump guides. They are almost all that size.

I thought I'd use the discussion thread for my rambling this time. This will be very tl;dr for most people, but I already mentioned I'd be rambling.

I've never found any GS guides at any of my local GS before, but after seeing a few good guides dropped today I thought I'd check a couple GS's on the way home.

The first GS had a bunch of empty slots in their guide racks, so of course no guides. When the 2 employees asked if they could help me, I asked if they ever give out the penny guides. They looked at each other kinda funny funny, then asked how I knew about them. I mentioned a friend (we are all friends here, right?) had picked up some earlier at a different GS. They asked which one I was looking for, so not wanting to be greedy and get denied, I asked for my main want, the Valkyria Chronicles guide. They kindly got it out of the back and gave it to me.

Happy about my first score I thought I'd try one more, the store closest to me which the employees are usually very friendly with me. I start up conversation with one of the guys I normally talk with when I shop there. I ask what their penny guides procedure is, again mentioning that a friend was able to pick up some at a different GS earlier. He gets a very serious look on his face and starts going into the spiel about how they aren't allowed to sell them and how they must be destroyed. The part that I was having a hard time keeping a straight face about was the other employee completely stopped working, and just stared angrily at me. No helping the other customers waiting in line, no chipping in, just this goofy mean stare. I'm not a puppy killer sir, I just politely asked what their procedure for the guides was.
I can't wait for the next BB drop.

I got kind of lucky today. I scored 2 Tales of Symphonia guides and 1 Blue Dragon Plus guide. Also bought two Persona 4 guides. No way in hell am I waiting for these puppies to penny out. They are pretty much OOS at most of my gamestop stores to begin with.

I also can't wait for the next BB drop. Hopefully, some good RPG guides drop. I still can't believe I couldn't find any Final Fantasy guides after that huge drop>_

I love when they give you 'the stare', which is what I've been given at numerous Kmart stores when I tell them what price a game SHOULD be ringing up.

I either tell them my one buddy got the same game for this price at a store out their way(usually in NJ or NY, somewhere FAR away from here) or I say I 'found out these were on clearance from the internet' without mentioning a specific site I got the info from.

Usually, it's a 20 minute conversation when you're trying to explain how you know stuff pennied or is on clearance but the price isn't updated.

Though it sucks when you get store clerks who don't know how to use their own systems or pricing guns and won't double check to see whether or not stuff dropped to a lower price for you.

Man I just "Hit the mother load" I think. I was a a pretty far Gamecrazy and the guy was super cool. He said I can take any guide he has that is pennied as long as I had a list. THANK YOU CAGs who listed!!!! He has a lot of guides out on the floor and he said he has 3 times a much in the back. They have dropps from like 8.02.08 and stuff. I heading out now to see if I can grab one of everything I want. If it's not too heavy I'll try to pick up extra to trade to other cags

I got lucky today and managed to find penny guides at a GS. The manager actually thanked me for "getting the guides out of his face."

It's the only time I've ever had someone thank me for buying penny guides.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. He had actually stickered the guides as 0.01 and they had been sitting there since yesterday.

I'm new to CAG, so let me get this straight. If I go into a Gamestop or other such listed store that has reduced their price of a guide to a penny I just grab it off the shelf (if they have any) and the cashier rings it up for $0.01?

Yes. As they scan into the register you can see the price comes up as $.01 each. Getting them to finish the transaction and give you the guides is YMMV. (Means it varies by store. Some will give it to you, others will not.)

I've now checked 6 Gamestops around Southern California, but none of them had Valkyria Chronicles. =(

I just bought the game and I'm going to start playing (without the guide the first time), but on a second playthrough I would like to use the guide to see what I missed. On top of that, I LOVE the art, so I would love a strat guide for the game based off that alone.

Anyone who was able to pick up multiple ones at their local Gamstop willing to sell me one pleaseeeee? Thanks!

Hey IAmTheCheapestGamer - first of all, I wanted to commend you on the awesome new trade thread! I'm trying to keep this in discussion because it's discussion :D

I was wondering if you had considered putting a short FAQ at the top post of the other thread? You have a few very helpful hints on not asking and stuff like that, but I still see people say things like, "Are the guides labeled a penny?" to which a few people then respond, "No" and you say take it to the discussion thread. Although those questions don't belong in the thread, they are good questions that most n00bs have when it comes to penny guides, and since I don't think it's mentioned in the first post, well they ought to search the thread but honestly it is usually pretty big. So, why not have a FAQ section (could be in spoiler tags to save space I suppose) that answers the little questions that we all know by now but new people don't. I think the last 3 sentences on the OP of the thread would make good parts for the FAQ as well. Also, I find it MUCH easier to look at a list - maybe I've got a particular question about the labeling of the guides, and now I've gotta read the whole OP again to look for it! If you like, I will try my best to write out a FAQ section and you can just copy/paste it into the OP. (This is assuming it's at the end of the OP - also some (most?) questions are a copy/paste of stuff you have in the OP, but I think it would work well for a FAQ). IATCG if you like this feel free to use it - and if you do use it, and others have ideas for the FAQ post em here cause I think this would make a great resource for old and new alike!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Wow, your FAQ basically answers every single question that gets asked 3000 times on the other thread. Unfortunately, even if IATCG adds your FAQ, the same idiots will still stroll through without reading the OP or post below it and ask an already answered question. The bright side would be that all we'd have to answer with is "Look at the first post." instead of the long-winded answers we've been giving.
The bright side would be that all we'd have to answer with is "Look at the first post." instead of the long-winded answers we've been giving.
Exactly. I often times want to say "See OP", but then realize the OP doesn't answer the question, so they actually sort of deserve a real response. With a FAQ it would also mean a mod can just delete any of those posts as they now don't add ANYTHING to the thread except for people say "See OP". I've had questions in the past that a FAQ would have solved, but had to resort to searching (and sometimes not finding the answer).

Wow. I couldn't believe what I seen today.
I walked into a gamestop to pick up some DVDs and I seen they had penny guides.:D

After I grab the full series of Cowboy Bebop I walked up to the register. The 3 employees working we like  we had that.

I was like, "Yeah, they were spread out over there."

He said, "Man I was going to pick those up later."

me, "Oh well sorry. Oh would you consider selling me some of those pennied out guides over there?"

Him," We have guides that got pennied? Where?"

I walked over and grabbed 5 Blue plus, 4 Valkyrie Cronicles, 5 Tales of Symphonia 2 guides all in perfect condition, oh and a bully scholarship edition. Then I bring them to him.and he scans them with a surprised look

him,"Oh wow. I guess these are pennied. Well I can't sell you all of them. I can let you get one of each."
me:whee:"Oh ok thats fine.

Now I thought I was going to get them, oh how wrong I was. The other employee walks over and the 1st guy says can we sell these.

2nd guy," Not if they are pennied. We have to clear them out of the computer and then throw them out.":bomb::bomb:

(That's not too bad. I can come back in a few hours and get them from the dumpster. :bouncy::bouncy:)

So he then takes them away and the manager says that they have to rip the cover off. They then start to rip the covers off of all the guides right in my face.

(oh well then I can still get them without the cover later)

I look away for a second and when I look back I see them start turning the guides horazontal in their hands. Then . . .. . They start ripping them in half along the middle.:hot::shock::hot::shock:

me"Ahh can't you just throw them out like that?"
manager"Sorry but this is how we work out."

They then finish ripping all the guides up and throw them into a box. It was horibble.

At Blockbuster I think the directions for destroying product stipulate dowsing it with water. ;)

That's a great addition to the guide thread and one that I'll definitely add in there. However, many times it seems like people just ask the questions without even taking the time to read the first or second posts AT ALL. So, would it really stop those people from posting the questions? Probably not, but it couldn't hurt.

I'll cut/paste it and give credit where credit is due. Thanks GrilledWitOnions.

Nailed a Best Buy today with 33 guides...Took the single copies of each to a nearby "Exchange" game store...Sold them 8 guides for 12 bucks, made the trip worthwhile.

Did I mention that I love you guys for making my life somewhat more fun? It's fucking hilarious to walk out of a store with a shitload of guides that are "somewhat" worthwhile for $.32. I also love these HUGE receipts.

But yeah, thank you all for the help.

No problem, I'm glad this was as good an idea as I thought. I can see where this won't stop every question, but "see OP" will definitely be easier than explaining things over and over again.

Are you a Mod cheapest? You really ought to be if not - you could clean out all the crap in the other thread (including my nonsense :p)

I used to love it when I'd go to the one or two stores known for keeping 3-4 drops worth of guides cluttering up the entire friggin' store and having to have them start a wholly new transaction because we had 'reached the limit'.

I remember walking out with 2 carts FULL, back when I used to grab every friggin' guide these stores had. That made for a hell of a trek back home with the shocks on whatever car I was driving straining the whole way.

Believe me, if I were a mod, I think I'd readily hold that power over those people who routinely bitch about my bitching in a couple threads.

As for the 'see OP' thing, I'm willing to bet there's going to be a number of smartasses who will come into the main guide thread JUST to post useless crap like asking 'wheres the faq?', even though it's right in the original post.

Picked up another Persona 4 for another CAG and was surprised to find that they had left out the last copy of Operation Darkness. The clerk sold me OD without any problem.

I went to 2 other GS and they were cleaned out but at one of them, they had some older drops on the shelves. I didn't attempt to pick those up because the manager was on duty and i'm sure he would have denied me. I'll try to go back late tomorrow and pick them up.

I was able to pickup Valkyria Chronicles today at a Gamestop while I bought some other stuff. The clerk was cool with it.

It's nice that I've been able to score two guides I want, but I'm not sure if I'll be as lucky in the future. There is a BB about 30min away from my work place that supposedly still has the Infinite Undiscovery guide even though it dropped a month ago...I gotta find some time to head up there.

I just saw GTA Lost and Damned and also GTA Chinatown Wars guide at GS. Those would be pretty sweet to get pennied. But then I thought....downloadable expansion deserves a guide? That's a money grab if I ever saw one.

I don't quite understand why people say if they can't get to Gamestop the day of drops they can't get guides. I've been to two in the last few days and both still have guides that dropped last week, just waiting til I want something cheap to buy so they're more likely to sell it to me.

They mean that their GS always pull penny guides but maybe late in the day or they are beat out by their competition. So if they can't go on drop day, they miss out. I'll bet that the majority of GS pull their guides or they'll deny you the sale. I have, easily, 15 GS within 10 miles of me and only 2 or 3 are good for picking up penny guides. It seems that you are lucky.
Do you guys think a preorder or actually buying something is a better way to get a guide?
I used to do this at GS and BB but now I think that if they are going to deny you, they'll deny you no matter what. It just depends on each individual GS employee. I just go up with the guides and chuckle when the clerk charges me pennies.

I used to throw a pre-order if the clerk(s) were nice enough to let me grab a guide or two that I REALLY wanted, but since the local DM threw down an edict that NO ONE is to sell a penny guide anymore I don't bother since most WON'T sell or even give me one if I find them.

However, the one store(the DM's base of operations locally in his district, no less)still lets me just take the guides if/when I find them on the shelf.

Oh and Penguin, 'limited edition' is usually only limited to the number of copies that will sell. If TONS of people buy the LE version of a guide, they can just print more, unless they actually out and out advertised 'limited to X number of copies'.

If you want the LE version of a guide, just wait till it pennies or they reduce it in price(if they do), since that's the ONLY way to buy guides.

I still can't believe how many hundreds of dollars I probably threw away over the years buying them at full price. I just wish that EB/GS still sold USED guides and took them in, the one EB by me was a gold mine for older, rarer guides for a while before the merger.

What does this mean at amazons page?
Print run limited to first day orders only
I would think it means they are going to print it for however many people order it for the first day... which makes no sense... I don't understand what the thing is trying to say.

According to Gamestop, what they ordered by RE5's release day as a company is all they will ever receive. They didn't get the entire stock on release day, but what they have is all they'll ever have. It was the same for MGS4LE I guess but you still see those on shelves from time to time.

Also, in reference to my previous post I went to pick up the penny guides today and decided to start a conversation about them with the clerk. He was nice and just said "we're supposed to tear them up and throw them away, but none of us believe in that so if we pull them we make a stack at the registers and give them to the next few customers or if you find them on the shelf they're yours."

Had a weird/scary experience getting a guide today. I was picking up a game and checked the rack just to make sure and saw a Bourne Conspiracy guide. I took it to the counter and asked if it was discounted since it was old and she rang it up and said they were supposed to destroy it and then put it on the counter. I didn't argue for it and she rang up my game. Just after she checked to make sure I got my CC and receipt, she looks at it and goes....oh, did you still want this? Hell yeah! and she packed it in the bag for free. Another moment going from despair to joy. My heart cannot take it.

Went to a gamestop last night and was able to find 2 copies of the Valkyria Chronicles guide. I get to the counter to pay for them and the manager scanned them and told me i could have them but he had to rip off the front cover "to protect the store". Figure I dont really need the cover but it was strange that he did that.

He's going to send the covers back to the publisher to ger a refund for the unsold merchandise. That's how they are supposed to do it, anyway.

I checked for an early drop an BB but could only find My Sims Kingdom and it was regular price. I did find World in Conflict and got that. Funny story is that I only saw it b/c someone picked up the guide in front of it to read, and lo and behold, there it was staring at me. My BB is overflowing with Far Cry 2, Dead Space, and Star Wars Force Unleashed.

Now that we're at Monday without a guide drop, does anyone have any speculation as to when we'll see the next drop happen? The drops this year had been following the drops from last year to a T, so I'm shocked to see this one not happen. Do you think BB corporate might be switching up the time/day when they drop guides to catch us off guard?

EDIT: Looks like back in 2006, guides dropped on the second week of April and in 2007 they dropped on the third. This must be one of those weird months where it isn't necessarily the first Monday of the month where guides drop.
