Patch Notes / How to Update (Last update 6/10/2014) - http://retron5.in/?src=98f13708210194c475687be6106a3b84

I've included the text from the pre-order era of this OP in spoilers for reference.
UPDATE 5/27/14: It's real this time. Hyperkin's June 6 release date is happening. Many mom and pop stores that have received their units have started selling them already, and many people who have ordered from Amazon (myself included) are reporting getting emails from Amazon notifying them that their orders qualify for release day delivery and are updating estimated delivery status to June 6th, no longer showing the "we need more time" placeholder. It's worth noting that so far only people who have ordered the grey unit from Amazon are receiving order updates (which coincides with Hyperkin reporting on their facebook page that they had shipped Amazon's grey preorder units, but Amazon had yet to place an order for the black units). All consoles that have been shown off online by reviewers, people who have been able to buy them before the street date, or Hyperkin themselves have all been grey consoles to this point. No word on black consoles. Another note: Chris Gallizzi of Hyperkin responded to an inquiry about Newegg orders by saying that he is not aware of any issues with Newegg's preorders, and they should be good to go for the launch.

UPDATE 5/22/14: Just one day after IGN and Polygon reported that Hyperkin would begin shipping units to retailers on May 22 (today as of this writing), Hyperkin essentially confirmed that. They have announced that the launch date for the long overdue RetroN 5 is June 6th, 2014. In a much quieter fashion (just by responding to a random person's comment) they confirmed this would be for North America only and that the console would launch in the UK in September. There is also one more small hitch. The rumor that the first batch of units would be only for mom/pop B&M retailers and that NO units from this batch would go to Amazon or Newegg has been gaining some serious steam. While Hyperkin has been responding to a decent amount of comments on their facebook page from excited fans, they continue to ignore questions about when Amazon orders will ship. So it seems those of us who preordered on Amazon still don't have a solid release date. Fulfillment could happen any time between June 6th through September or beyond.

UPDATE 5/21/14: IGN today reported that the RetroN 5 would begin shipping out on May 22 (tomorrow, as of this writing)! This coincides with Chris Gazzilli, Hyperkin's project manager, posting a picture on his facebook page of a massive shipping container full of RetroN 5 units. Ladies and Gentlemen, it seems hell may have just frozen over.

UPDATE 5/13/14: Hyperkin has listed the RetroN 5, and it's controllers, on their company wholesale store for authorized retailers to buy. The console (both colors) and controllers (both colors) are listed as sold out. I'm not sure if they were in stock and sold out quickly, or if they haven't been made available yet. Regardless, it's good news that the system is listed for the first time ever. Additionally, reviewers such as GameSpot and several youtube reviewers have received their review units, which appear to be retail units. The RetroN 5 seems to finally be around the corner. We'll see, but things look promising right now. One thing to note: the listing for the console on Hyperkin's wholesale page indicates that each wholesale box contains six units. If this is the case, it would seem to debunk the previous report of the console being shipped in quantities of four per retailer.

UPDATE 4/25/14: While this hasn't technically been confirmed by Hyperkin, I take it as fact. It's worth remembering that NOTHING has been officially confirmed by Hyperkin. Hyperkin has remained silent until unofficially confirming almost all known info in random interviews with various youtubers and forum members. Therefor, again, I take this as fact:

I spoke to Hyperkin today.

Here are the "unofficial" details.

The "end of May" release is a "soft" release. Meaning they really are waiting for the next batch due in the summer for the official real release. Amazon is NOT getting any of the units released at the end of May. Each retailer is only getting 4 units. Retail on the unit is $139.99 and $39.99 for the additional controller. The reasons for the price increase are both cosmetic and technical but if it works as it should then it should be a great retro system.

Our 4 are already taken with pre-orders. If you know any stores locally that are getting units, and you want one for end of May, then i suggest you contact them and put money down. Keep in mind that each store is getting 4 units only for the soft launch.
UPDATE 4/17/14: Hyperkin has increased the price of the RetroN 5, saying "north of $100, between $129.99 and $149.99". Alll pre-orders from Amazon should be honored via their pre-order price guarantee. I believe Newegg has the same guarantee, I am not sure about Stone Age Gamer or 8 Bit Classics. Think Geek still hasn't opened pre-orders on the unit, instead offering a link to be signed up for email notifications as to when it will be available. Also on the Amazon front, they have sold out or pre-orders. Furthermore, it is more likely you'll learn the ETA from Amazon, Newegg, or whoever you ordered it from. Hyperkin has gone on record of saying they will never again announce a hard release date for anything.

UPDATE 4/12/14: After Hyperkin denied the console was delayed again and vigoruosuly shoved the month of April up everyone's ass for half a year, today they delayed the vaporware console yet again. At the Midwest Gaming Classic, they did their annual presentation. They ignored the planned April 2014 release, but finally somebody in the crowd asked about it. The Hyperkin rep said it was releasing in "30 days, guaranteed". This is not the first time they used the word "guaranteed", last time was about April so this doesn't mean jack shit. So maybe it'll randomly show up at people's houses at the end of may, maybe it wont, and maybe my ass will fly out of my ass.

Retron 5 Delay History:
-Summer 2013 (which they continued to say after summer was over, claiming they meant "Indian Summer" or "California Summer"....i'm not making this up)
-December 10 2013
-Quarter 1 2014
-Quarter 2 2014
-First two weeks of April
-April 2014, guaranteed
-Gauranteed within 30-40 days of April 12, 2014
-June 6 2014

DELAYED. ANY UPDATES FROM HYPERKIN WILL COME ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/HyperkinGames

UPDATE: In a recent interview, Hyperkin confirmed that the initial batch of units WILL NOT BE ENOUGH to meet day ome demand. Also confirmed was the ability for the system to act as a multitap. Example: in a four player SNES game, two players could use snes controlles, one player could use the retron controller, and one player could use a genesis controller. Interview can be found here.

Pre-order at Amazon (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Newegg: Black (SOLD OUT) or Grey (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Stone Age Gamer (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)
Pre-order at 8 Bit Classics (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)

UPDATE: Hyperkin claims that they opened up some packaged retail units and discovered some units had faulty pins. because of this, the Retron 5 has been delayed. No new release date has been announced, although Hyperkin has stated the unit will release in 2014 and that they are aiming for Q1. This is the Retron 5's third delay.

EDIT: Preorders are sold out at Amazon and Newegg.

Retron5 pre-orders have finally (about damn time) opened.

For those of you who have been following this console, you know it's quite highly anticipated and looks to be far better than any clone system released before.

For those unfamiliar, here's a little info:

  • It's one system that plays games for the following systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.
  • Two controller ports for each console will be built in with the system. It will also come with one wireless universal controller.
  • Outputs in HDMI and upscales for HDTVs. Early impressions and videos of this have been extremley postive. From the website: "The RetroN 5 will up convert the video signal to show clearer and cleaner images, with vibrant colors on an HDTV with a resolution output of up to 720p through the use of shaders. You will also be able to select the aspect ratio in our GUI, from the standard 4:3 to the HD ratio of 16:9."
  • Features a user interface (dashboard. Somewhat similar of the PS3 interface in appearance, in my opinion).
  • Features save states. From the website: "Most games did not allow for you to freely save your games. The RetroN 5 will allow you to save their games at any point during gameplay, and will feature an autosave feature upon shutdown. You will be able to load your saves at anytime during gameplay."
  • Button reassignment supported. From the website: "Users will be able to program the controller to assign buttons to their preference. In turn, the RetroN 5 will save these custom layouts, so that users will not have to constantly reconfigure the button configuration. This feature will also be available to people wanting to remap their buttons on their original controllers."
  • 100% game cartridge compatibility, without lag.
  • Sega Power Base Converter compatible, allowing Sega Master System games to be played.
More information is here. It may be a bit dated since this was from back when they first announced the console, but I figured it was the best site to link since it also featured some screenshots as well. http://hyperkin.com/blog/2013/03/retron-5-details-revealed-from-the-midwest-gaming-classic/ There is also plenty of info on Hyperkin's facebook page.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and i'm extremley excited that pre-orders are finally open. For one console that not only plays all of these console's games, but upscales them and features save states (either to the cartridge (if supported) or the console itself)...this seems like a great deal. And if you've been following the hype for the console, there is a good chance it could end up selling out. Hyperkin isn't a huge company and this thing has a TON of pre-release demand (just check out the comments on the facebook page). I like the look of the black one a bit better, because it seems to be the traditional console color nowadays. But I opted for the grey model because the black console and controller seem like they'd be fingerprint magnets.

Preorder either color here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-Gaming-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00DZIX3CQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1378958043&sr=8-13&keywords=retron+5 or here at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=retron%205&N=-1&isNodeId=1&RandomID=65244712392254220130925161655

Here are pictures of the two consoles, since the pictures on Amazon aren't that great:

Dear god that thing is amazing. I can't believe how good it can make a GBA game look on a big screen.

That IGN video gave me a bit of confidence.
I had locked in a $99 preorder on Amazon, which I had forgot about. Prolly gonna let it go through now.

Just gotta hope the build quality is good...

Same here, and the collection of games I recently bought/found

So do we like the Retron5 now or are we supposed to be mad still? I can't keep track.
Depends. If you're an impatient d-bag then you are supposed to still hate it but now complain about the build quality since you've never touched it and know for a fact they will be garbage. If you have been waiting patiently like an adult, then you are happy to hear that it is (probably) releasing soon. I might have to pop out to Best Buy to buy some Amazon credit to pay for these things tonight. Just wish I knew for sure cause I'd rather just pick up the credit tomorrow on my way home instead of making a special trip.

This is good news!  Hopefully everyone who pre-ordered gets their's in a timely manner w/out DOA issues.  For me personally, I'll wait until the smoke clears and see how everyone feels first.  I love the concept of playing all these games on one console, but I'm still wary of the quality of the product.  Good luck everyone!

I'll believe it when my Amazon order updates with an actual shipping estimate. No sweat though, I've waited this long and I'm locked in at $76 so even if it's a few more weeks its all good. Looking forward to not needing to hook up my old consoles and crappy HDMI upscaler when I get the itch to break into my archives.

When I get my system )hopefully next week) I will be doing a live broadcast of it on my PS4 cam.  Ill have the cam facing the TV with the REtron 5 in sight.  Ill be logged into twitch on my laptop to answer questions and so on.  I have nearly 100 nes games, about 15 super famicom games, and about 70 Genesis/SNES games (combined).  I only have 3 GB/GBC games.  Metal Gear Solid, GTA, nad GTA 2.  But I will still show them.

I have some very good games as well just to name a ew

This makes me curious how my collection stacks up against others. I have ~200 NES carts, ~150 SNES, ~50 GBA, ~20 GB/C,~30 Genesis and ~30 SMS. My collections aren't very large but I'd like to think they are fairly potent. My NES collection has a little bit of filler/lower quality titles but otherwise I've got some really great stuff in those lists.

I have been snagging up some ebay auctions, plus there are about 6 retro stores near me. Farthest is 30 minute drive. And all have good prices. My best friend growing up (was just the best man in his wedding) lives 2 hours away and has an AWESOME retro store near him. HE snags me 5-10 games whenever he comes to visit. I have only been collecting since Late december. I have some great games in my collection already.

Oh, I forgot, I also have a nice RARE COMPLETE MINT copy of Madden 1993 Championship Edition.  One of the more rare sports games to ever be made.  It was a rental store exclusive ONLY which is printed on the box art.  It is the same as regular madden 1993 except it has ALL and ONLY old school teams.  66 packers, 77 steelers, 88 49ers, and the 85 bears.  DA BEARS!!

HAHa.

You've definitely got some good collection starter carts. I don't believe any of those are rare by any means so they should have been good cheap pick ups.

Yeah, thats only some of them. Some I got in ebay auction lots. Some are more rare and fetch a higher price. $15 and up. Mario all stars with SMW, that cart is more rare than just the one that has mario all stars. Super C fetches a good price as well. ebay is the way to go except for my one store that has buy 2 get 1 free on ALL retro games. I got an ebay auction of 28 games for $81, free shipping. great deal as it ended up being like $2.70 per game.

Hey all.  I can't find this info anywhere.  Does the R5 let you dump roms to the SD card to use elsewhere, and vice versa?  That is, play roms off the SD card?

Also, I assume other bluetooth controllers work since the pack in uses it.  Yes?

Super C is like a $20 cart. That's rare? You just flipping low value carts? $20 is nothing man. I'm still looking for a decently priced Wacky Races (worth $70-$80+) among a handful of other carts. The 28 game lot you got probably had maybe one or two good carts and a ton of filler.

Tell me you are new to collecting? Once you've gotten all the worthwhile low priced carts you'll see most of the really good or really rare stuff is a lot more. I don't mean to insult but a $20 cart is practically bargain bin in the retro collecting scene anymore.

So, is Amazon the only major retailer planning on carrying this? Will I have to scour the local hobby shops to try to find one, since I procrastinated preordering while Amazon still had them at $99?

I would think the real question would be are there any mom and pop type of stores left to try and search? It's 2014, I'm surprised any of these type of stores are still clinging to life.

Also, I'm still shocked these things almost doubled in price from what they were being asked for originally. I have one preordered but would have never sprung for this thing for the price it is now. It kinda looks cheap and the reviews so far haven't been that favorable so it's a bit unnerving to see them want that kinda money for it.

Sure wish I had ordered early enough to get in on those random Amazon price drops, but at least I have my order at $99 locked in. That said, I just checked to switch payment method to a different credit card and I discovered my pre-order is for a grey one. WTF?!?! I could've sworn I ordered black. Oh well!

All *that* said, I'm not getting my hopes up until we start actually seeing shipping notices!!

There are some retro game stores around here that are doing amazing business. Why? Because without Gamestop carrying anything beyond a generation, they're the biggest source of direct contact anyone has for finding a game older than 2004.

This is silly. Most people would never spend $70+ in 20-39the year ild games

June 6 is now the new release date for the RetroN 5. Unfortunately, there is an unconfirmed yet assumed true rumor flying around that says Amazon will NOT be receiving ANY units from the first batch. June 6 units will be available in mom and pop shops, and the RetroN 5 will release in the UK sometime in September, according to Hyperkin. As of when Amazon and Newegg will be able to fulfill preorders, Hyperkin remains silent. It could be as early as June 6, it could be as late as after the UK release.

June 6th for here North America? And September for UK? A whole two months different yet last month in the video Chris released on Facebook on hyperkin Facebook he said the reasons for all the delays was cause they wanted a single date to release globally to all it retailers at once and didnt want different release dates lmao someone bullshitting n lying at hyperkin again

Of course most people wouldn't. But enough people do that games still sell for those prices all the time.
My phone did some crazy auto correct on my post. And I wasn't saying some people don't, but mocking someone for thinking $20 is a lot for an old game is no way to welcome them into the same hobby as you. Collecting classic games that are under $20 will get you pretty far, and with the number if systems the R5 plays, if all you are looking for is fun, enough games to play for a lifetime.

Most people aren't hardcore gamers.

Was not mocking. I did say he had some good games in there. I was just attempting to widen his perception of retro gaming. Games that are less than $20-$30 aren't rare in almost every case. I'm assuming he hasn't heard of any of the over $50 titles out there. There are some really great games to be played but a lot of the best are pricier for a reason.

I agree. I was actually going to say something to the same effect. A retro game has to be really really special for me to want to pay more than 30 for it. A lot of the time, it's easier to just buy compilations or digital re-releases than pay the outrageous prices some games go for.

Most people aren't hardcore gamers.
Being a hardcore gamer and being willing to spend more than others on a specific rare title are two different things. I would say that people that are willing to spend the extra dough are hardcore collectors. They could still be hardcore gamers, mind you, but the quality that makes them spend that much is not related to any gaming prowess, but, instead, on an affinity for collecting.

I consider it hardcore to want an original copy of a game. After all, why buy any games at all otherwise when pirating ROMs is still a viable option?

Buying re-releases of old games is fine if they are difficult or expensive to obtain. Unfortunately a lot of these re-releases aren't of the harder to find games, but rather the most popular and typically easier to obtain.

If you are looking to collect these old school games then you have to be willing to pay what the market demands. Sure, there are tons of good games that can still be had inexpensively, but if you are really looking to have a sizable collection you're going to have to start shelling out more as the list of lower priced games you do not own dwindles or simply stop collecting. I'm going for complete NES and SNES (very likely will go for Genesis and SMS at some point too) collections and I expect to pay as much as $1000-1500 or even upwards of $2,000-$3,000 for a single cart (or more depending on how much the very top carts are going for when I finally get around to buying them) and I have no problem with that because I know that is what those carts are valued at. If I'm lucky the retro market will come back down by then, but I doubt we will see a significant drop in values over the next couple of decades.

Someone posted an image of their Amazon order on the Hyperkin FB page. Their order is 'In Transit'. I feel like this has to be some kind of error. How could their order be shipped already?

You're delusional.

It could definitely be someone trolling. My preorder from over 8 months ago still says "Delivery estimate We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date."
