Robotech - Protoculture Collection on Amazon $37.49

Crap just bought this for $40 at BB, and am having Noein shipped to me (Amazon had it priced higher at the time, now it's down to the $17 price). Does BB refund shipping when you return an online purchase to a store? I'd rather just buy them both from Amazon and save $5 from shipping and tax.

bought it at BB and I still haven't opened it yet -- still, i was able to snag a perfect copy so i'm quite happy with it.

tax is like $4 -- not worth the hassle of returning it.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they DON'T refund shipping unless it was an error on their end. Amazon will also make you pay for shipping on returns if it is not their error. This is the case for all online retailers. The only exception is that you order an item and then find it at their store after you receive it and the item you got in the mail is damaged, etc. Then customer service will allow the store to refund your shipping costs because you found it in-store in better shape.

May be you can sweet-talk your BB to doing otherwise, but that's the policy.

I just bought this at BB this morning, in perfect shape and it was the last one. Maybe I could buy this one for a present for a friend...

Usually I would agree that it makes sense that they wouldn't refund the shipping unless it's their error, but I bought something on black friday last fall and it went to ship before I could cancel (within 2 hours, something really quick), and customer service said I couldn't cancel but could just wait for the item in the mail and return it to a store... seems like I wouldn't have done it had the shipping not been refunded, but maybe I forgot to check.

...After reading their policies more carefully, I'm guessing I ate the shipping charges. It must have been a much better deal at Amazon for me to have done that! I guess I'll just order Robotech and Elfin Leid, and return those. I guess $3 extra for Noein won't kill me.

...Elfin Leid is OOS at Amazon. Oh well. I'm eating $5, but I guess I still got some pretty decent deals. Why do I bother with BB when Amazon ALWAYS PM's their best deals?
That is worth it. I already have old releases, but am tempted just because Robotech was that good.
I was tempted to buy this just to save space on my shelf (I've got the 7 Legacy boxes), but this is the "remastered" version isn't it? The one that adds about 5 seconds of useless footage to each episode and cleaned up the video? Somehow I'm happier watching the discs that are exactly what I saw as a kid on broadcast TV, in the same mediocre quality.

Damn! I knew I should have ignored this thread. I already have the entire series (3 volumes) but this is a really good deal and it's ROBOTECH.

This is a summary of what this set has:

All the extras from the original Legacy set.
All the remastered episodes
Much cleaner video
Remastered 5.1 audio
Redone opening/closing sequences (Now they're specifically related to each part of the show instead of just having one for everything)
Redone eye catches

I've seen both and although the redone opening/closings are annoying, I think the remastered video and audio make it more then worth it. If you really have an urge to see them, they are included on one of the extras discs. Being about half the shelf size too doesn't hurt.

For whatever reason, none of that really interests me much. I don't mind the dirty video, the audio wasn't 5.1 to begin with, and I don't watch the openings/closings anymore.

Are eye catches the commercial break intro/outros?

Granted, if my discs had the cleaned up video I wouldn't mind that. But I bought all these box sets when they first came out at about $30 or so each. So I've got over $200 invested in them, plus the Shadow Chronicles. It would take a hell of a lot to get me to re-invest, despite my crowded dvd shelf.

The eye catches are the scenes between commercials.
I bought the legacy sets as well, but I managed to sell them for $90 about 6 months ago. I think you can at the very least get back the 38 dollars it will cost for the new set and then some.
The audio isn't a big deal, but the video really is good. Having rewatched the old ones by comparison, I have to say that they were just awful. These ones don't look like GITS or anything obviously, but the colors and overall picture quality are drastically better.

Well any robotech fan, must have at least a few copies of the different versions, like myself, I have the almost all the legacy series, got the a couple of the remastered and the Mospeada and Southern Cross collections. I had all those series, and when at BB at 38$, I never hesitated and bought the Protoculture Collection, I am a Fan, so it could no be expected less.....

F-ing Best Buy -- they sent me the box set in a bubble mailer, they didn't even have the decency to put a big set like that in a box. It was in really bad shape with dents all over and the corners crumpled. I had to go back to the store today and get it exchanged with a better one. I'm never ordering box sets from them again.

This is probably the best deal ever considering the retail, but I don't know if I can bite, I didn't watch the Legacy set for the Macross Saga more than once when I got them like 5 years ago or so and I only like the first two sagas anyway.

I've ordered a number of GBA games from them before... let's just say they weren't in MINT condition when I opened up the bubble mailer. Amazon does a great job of packing DVD sets - large cardboard sheet used as backing upon which the item is placed on and wrapped to prevent movement, then placed in a larger box with packing material. Every thing I've recently ordered from them has been pristine.

Great deal ... until the new Uber-Ultimate-Must-Have-This_Is_The_Real_Final_Master-Platinum-Gold-Viagra-Levitra-LSD-Giant_Jugs-Super-Fanatistic-Turbo-Accent_Core-Reload-Extended-Directors_Cut-HiDef-Hooked_on_Phonics-Complete-Edition comes out with the original Macross-J series and the enhanced and drab Robotech versions with 24 DVDs of bonus material. Of course, a BluRay version of the previously mentioned title will have to come out a couple of years later.

I'm not sure how many more of these they can milk out before there is an uprising, but I'm guessing many people's patience is too high for this type of stuff.

I don't see what else they can do to Robotech to re-release it. The only reason we even have the new cleaned up video is because Animeigo cleaned up Macross, ADV did both Genesis Climber Mospeada and Southern Cross Cavalry. I have no doubt we will see Macross in HD sooner or later probably from Japan or perhaps Animeigo will give it a go again. But I don't put good odds on a HD update for SCC and GCM.

Although I wouldn't put it past them to package these up with the current standard encoding and stick them on a few Blu-ray's. It should fit on about four of them with the 480i or 480p it's in now. But Harmony Gold seems only do stuff to the series when others take the lead and they come in after all the work is done(which might be for the better anyways).

LOL. Luckily I waited it out. I just sold my shitty transfer ROBOTECH LEGACY MACROSS SAGA collection for 40 bucks on ebay and got this so i made 3 bucks and got the remastered protoculture collection to boot. I don't think robotech is gonna ever get any better as I don't think they were mastered on film but in 480i video. If they were mastered in film then a blu-ray would be amazing if they ever cleaned it up. But it's not. the only thing they could do is upconvert to 1080p from the native 480i. It would basically look like it does now with less mosquito noise and macroblocking digital artifacts. probably a 10% difference. So i'd say the protoculture collection is the de facto experience. oh wait. it doesn't have a japanese dub. ADV you is crazy!

Animeigo physically cleaned and digitally cleaned the original realese frame by frame. Part of the reason it took so long it should be prime for taking it up to 1080p and whatever the future might hold without doing much extra work on it. The Japanese probably have a comparable if not better set available to them. So I figure it's a matter of when and not if we will see Macross in 1080p. I'm guessing the masters are in 8mm so won't translate as well as 16mm or 32mm but it is at least not video tape. The other two are probably in 8mm as well but not sure if anyone will put the money into it, just have to wait and see.

has anyone has theirs ship yet? still waiting on mine..along with Invader Zim Complete Collection (w/Zim's House) to ship *crosses fingers it doesn't get canceled*
