Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out
Yeah, really got frustrated today because the issues only came up once the game changed the single fret notes into the E7-->C9 progression. Think that was the sequence. And I thought it wasn't registering because I wasn't muting the string properly. Then I was accidently muting two strings. Wasn't until I cleaned up my form that I thought to check the intonation.

Took for granted that I hadn't had any issues in a long time. So I got lazy and just relied on the in-game tuner.
And it was a quick fix. But still pissed at the way the leveller
I've been doing ok at this game until i hit songs with double stops in them.. even going into the double stop challenge it just seems like they aren't registering properly no matter what i try. I even had my GF sit and watch my hand to make sure i'm not touching strings i'm not supposed to... i wonder if its the Intonation? I watched a youtube video on it thanks to your post and i'm gonna check it out later tonight and see if that helps :)

Yeah, it's real easy to overlook intonation checks. Especially since the in-game tuner doesn't check for it. Which sucks since I'm sure some people have blamed the game for something that was most likely caused by issues with the guitar.

That's why I think everyone should buy a tuner. They're only 8-15 bucks and will make it real easy to check intonation and tuning. It'll also come in handy if you decide to change your own strings or make adjustments to the guitar

Probably another slow week for Rocksmith since no advertised sales, again. But it is still $60 thru Amazon.

And don't know when it happened but Rondo dropped the price on two models of the SX Callisto JR from 140 to $100. But only these two
Black http://www.rondomusic.com/callistojrbk.html
Sunburst http://www.rondomusic.com/callistojr.html

The SX callisto JR is another of their Les Paul copies, but with P90 pickups. And the JR DOESN'T stand for junior, so don't compare it with the Epiphone Les Paul Jr. This model is more comparable to the Les Paul Special I w/P90 which sells for 130. Biggest difference between the SX and Epiphone: Set neck vs a Bolt-on, 2 volume & 2 tone controls vs 1 vol & 1 tone, Shiny finish vs the Worn finish. Oooooh, shiny. Look at the shiny:drool:

Don't know if any of you have some Best Buy credit lying around ;) but Best Buy carries the Dunlop Strap Loks for 14.99 a set. I hope they're the nickel ones (they say they are). I should get them this week. I am a little leery of playing my Tele until I have them on there.

Also, I pulled my Audio Technica wireless guitar unit out of the closet this weekend and hooked it up. I was expecting a little lag, but that thing is PERFECT. Just in case you all wanted to put a little less strain on your RS cable (which seems to be sort of fragile), you can go wireless for about $50 or 100...

Wireless Systems at MF

Never thought of doing the wireless thing. Would be kind of nice to actually sit down because my xbox is to far away from my couch. Might have to look up some things on amazon since I have credit there.

Amazon is holding @ $60 for Rocksmith

And if you believe the posts on the RS forums. Rocksmith has sold about 500k copies since release. Not bad for something with such a high buy-in

Hey thanks for the tip. Had been looking at stuff thru Amazon but couldn't get a good idea how well they work by just looking at pics.

I'm gonna try to get in there tomorrow. Luckily I'll be near the store that has them in stock.

Well a quick fix would be to use a USB extension. Did this almost immediately because I was too close to the tv and I didn't want to stress the RS cable or pull the xbox off the shelf. Also use a right angle adapter for the 1/4 jack.

But it would be cool to go wireless. Just one more thing for the wish list.

Good thing I only plan to buy Syndicate and ME3 over the next few months
Yes please!
Ok I'll start listing it. In the meantime, I'll put a link in the OP which lists all the current DLC

What about USB only being good for 16 feet? There is no retransmitter between the extension USB and the rocksmith cable. So wouldn't your signal die out pretty quick?

Didn't know you had to take it out so far. Most I've tried is 12ft and didn't have any problems. Most of the time I use the 6ft extension

In that case extend it with a 1/4" instrument cable + coupler. I've read other forums about people going with 25ft cables and not having problems (though I haven't done it).

But wireless would be worth it just to not have that mess

But wireless would be worth it just to not have that mess
I went with the 1/4" coupler since my guitar came with a 1/4" cable. However I don't use it much since I already sit close to the TV, since I use my X12 or PX21 since my setup uses HDMI for sound.
Best Buy carries the Dunlop Strap Loks for 14.99 a set. I hope they're the nickel ones (they say they are)
Checked them out a little bit ago. This BB also had Hennessey straplocks. Took my strap in to see how it would go on.

In the end, chose the Hennessey design. Felt stronger, heavier and really clamps down on the strapend to keep it from sliding around on the post. Kinda prefer this release mechanism too; basically behind the strap instead of a button on the outside. Oh and this one grips the new strap button around the outside, but felt just as secure as the Dunlop

Now to see how they work with the weight of the guitar pulling on em.
And they were 10 bucks. That's cheaper than the couple of checks I did online. Go figure.

Thanks again for the tip crazedracer

Glad to help. May check out those Hennessy locks myself...

I looked back at my old receipts from when I had GAS in the early days of playing... You guys got a great deal on that Schecter from Amazon... but I got a Fender AMERICAN Strat in 2003 at Guitar Center for $349... The list price was 1149 ;)

I've been following this thread for awhile & I had no intention of buying a new guitar as I have a starter Squier Bullet, but now I realize its pretty crappy lol. I've been getting frustrated with the high action and was looking into the Deans on Amazon since I have some credit.

I'm not sure whether to go with the Vendetta XM or EVO. Any advantages to the Paulownia vs Basswood body. I have been researching and it seems like the Vendetta has more positive reviews. Unless it is wiser for me to spend $50 more to get a Epiphone SG Special or LP Special II. So indecisive :wall:

Game arrived today from amazon. It is much better than expected and all the reviews are positive. I have played on and off for 10 years and know some chords, but no complete songs. I'm going to go through Rocksmith slowly. I am very impressed and can't wait to find some free time to play.

This thread encouraged me to play again. I already have a Epiphone LP Special 2. And love the Black Keys song at the beginning of the game.

Played for a while tonight, haven't played since before getting the Damien (though i used my JS1600 still). Hit 3,000,000 RSP points, need to sit down and do some of that technique stuff since I've been skipping it.

FYI. Things get real when you reach "In Bloom" (for us novices). You gotta fight through it though...it gets much better.

Quick update on the Hennessey straplocks. Went with the Chrome finish (model #nsl7200C) since they were going on my Les paul Jr. and they were a perfect fit. The new screw was the the same size as the old one so got a nice tight fit. Only took a couple of minutes to remove the old and install the new.

Tried shaking, twisting and bending the strap at the ends while attached to the guitar and they held fine. I'll grab another pair in a week if these continue to hold up. Also reattached the strap lock to the strap so that I could wrap a bit of plumbers tape around the base of the post. Did this just to keep the threads from diggin into the strap edge. Figured it wouldn't hurt and hey, it's not visible once the cap is screwed on.

Another plus is that it keeps the strap end about 3/4" away from the body of the guitar. So the strap shouldn't scuff the finish on your guitar. My LP jr already has two scuff patches in two months of use

From what I've seen, Paulownia is suppose to be a step up from basswood, but still not the most desired choice. And I don't think the EVO has the tremelo bridge.

The Vendetta is a solid choice. I have an easier time playing it than when I grab the LP jr. But I'm slowly realizing that I have more fun playing the Lp Jr and I think part of it is due to the neck size. It just feels more comfortable in these mitts that I call hands;). My hands only start to hurt after a play session with the Dean. And well, the Damien has made it the odd man out

Though if I had the opportunity, I would switch the Dean out for that Callisto JR I found just to try out the P90s and set neck. It seems different enough from what I've already played
So, what does upcoming DLC look like? I haven't read much about it.
Here's the most recent release:
*(Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult – Combo, Combo 2.
*Space Oddity by David Bowie – Combo, Chord.
*Barracuda by Heart – Single Note, Combo.

They normally do releases every two weeks

+1
I was an absolute noob when I started and In Bloom and Well ok Honey were early roadblocks for me. Took a bit of time to qualify 'em. But once I did, it helped improve my skills enough that I breezed thru the next playlist. Keep at it and you will improve. Look at me; I've been able to push my way thru to Rank 7

This last event was pretty brutal. Had to get 90k on five of the eight songs in the playlist. I can almost move around the frets freely without looking down, except for those big shifts up the neck. Start to get woozy going past the 12th fret;)

. Well that's the fun and cheaper way to go.

I'm at rank 3 almost 4. I've been taking it really slow although I just qualified for all the songs for my event. Will wrap that one up tonight. Was a lil difficult but still kinda easy. I'm just having a problem getting chords down.

I'm midway through rank 7. I took a long while off from events to master some songs that I really liked (Nirvana songs, High and Dry and I Hate Everything About You) and I've been leveling up some songs through the events now. It's funny - now, songs that I may have scored 25 or 30 thousand on when I played it the first time, now events want me to get 70 or 80K on it... At first, I didn't think I'd be able to do that... Now, I don't even bat an eyelash. I 100% leveled up "Step Out of the Car" last night. I'll play it again tonight. I think I need 65000 to qualify... It amazes me how quickly your skills improve when you just keep playing...

Very true. I was pulling shit out of my ass I had no idea I could do. My fingers were just moving and I just remember thinking to myself, "How am I doing this?!" Was very neat but again, that was on single note parts. I think after this event is over, I'll go back and finish up getting gold on some of the technique challenges.

On another note, I unlocked super ducks last night. I enjoy this version so much better than normal ducks. I think it will help a ton on my practicing.

Wife confirmed my guitar arrived. Can't wait to get home now. Yay for snow storm...

That said, fingers crossed it's not damaged. What should I be looking for? I know someone mentioned the neck and cracking? Anything else?

I haven't read this entire thread so I don't know if this site has been posted already. Here you can find extremely affordable guitars and basses. All of them are entry level start up kits but, I think they are decent. I bought one of the bass packs and have been really happy with it. I am a drummer and wanted to mess around on the bass. I plan on picking up one of the guitar packs.

Hope your guitar arrived safely, I'm not sure if yours was a Vendetta like mine, but definitely look at the head stock and the neck to an extent as well. The body on the vendetta is pretty solid but the way the head is designed makes it really easy to crack the pointy tips if it's dropped. Definitely a good idea to grab a strap with this model asap, but as I learned this week, spend a bit more on a strap because the cheap one I bought was a pain in the ass to put on (good news is that I don't think it's going to need locks though ;) )

That tight fit is a good thing. Unless the strap-end ripped in the process

OT: Lakers are sucking wind for the 2nd night in a row:roll:

Well, Amazon jacked the price back up on RS. It had been at 60 for so long that I thought other retailers were going to follow suit. This is an Ubi title afterall.

Thanks. Good to hear from someone that has used some of that gear.

I recently found out about them and posted some review links a few pages back. From what I could tell, SX is their lowend stuff and Agile is their highend stuff.

Played an event last night. Did well on all the songs. Got encore. Up flashes "High and Dry" Master Mode encore - and I didn't even see where it told me which of the three arrangements it was... Punishing. At least I got to play a while yesterday. My parents picked up my little boy yesterday from day care and I got to work from home :)

Target Online has the

of Rocksmith on sale @ $71.99

Know it's pathetic but it's the only deal right now. Probably best to track the Amazon Warehouse deals in case RS pops up again.

And a quick reminder that Guitar Center and Musicians Friend both have coupon codes that expire today, 1/22

Surprised myself tonight while playing "When I'm with You". Hadn't played it in over a month, but I had my fingers in place as soon as the "G" chord popped up. Who knew?! Starting to think I'll be able to take off the training wheels some day:lol:

Also played around a bit with the Rogue amp. Liking it so far even though I've only really used it on Clean settings. But that was mainly what I wanted so I could really tell how good or bad I'm playing the strings. I'll get to the other settings over the next few days. Seems built pretty solid too. It's like a 40lb suitcase that could double as a bench. No creaks or cracks and the knobs feel right. So far, so good. Especially for the 100 I paid

I really want this game. I've been meaning to pick up guitar for a while. I used to try learning through youtube videos.. it was working for a while but I eventually got frustrated and moved on to other things.

The $80 price tag is kind of a turn off. Should have bit on Amazon when I had the chance. Maybe we'll see another sale in the near future. This game seems perfect for me, and I think I'll bite if / when it hits 60 again.

Gamestop had it for $50 in early December so I'm waiting for around that price point.

I paid $70 at target a few months ago and got the $10 GC with it. Wasn't the best price but at least I can say I got it on sale. Still worth it, even if I am progressing through it slowly.

I did just come up to an event with songs that I do not like to listen to. Rolling Stones and a few others on this event. I know I can change the songs but that just feels wrong to me. So I'm just rolling with the motions till I finish up this event. No drive to learn these ones lol.

It is a great site. You really can't go wrong for the price. Plus the quality is much better than any of the "First Act" brand stuff. It's actually a lot better. I bought the SX bass pack, came with a 15 watt bass amp, start up dvd, cable, tuner, bass strap, soft case for the bass, and some other tools for adjustments. I got all that for $120 or $130. It is a lower end bass, it doesn't have active pickups, that is my only gripe about this bass so far. Shipping was fast too.

For those of you interested in other methods for learning songs, as well, Rock Prodigy dropped to free today in the App Store. If you have an iRig, it's another way to learn in a "game" format...

Thanks for the tip. I'll pick it up and pass it on to a friend at work that's learning guitar (and just got his son a guitar).

Ok, Amazon SHOULD have Rocksmith on sale today during their all-video game Gold Box event.

6:00pm Clue is "Rock out with your own guitar"

It's gotta be RS, right?

EDIT: D'oh!, etcrane beat me to it

Haven't found much on those Maestro by Gibson guitars. But a few forum posts say they aren't good. Like those First Act bundles you see in Target. And they want to charge 13 in shipping

And "Surf Hell" is my new nemesis. I get the riff fine at first then end up all out of sync later on. My last three events have each had at least one song where I need to really work to get it right. I even removed "Me and the Bean" at the beginning of this event because I didn't feel like grinding thru it. So much for having a chill event list:cry:

Anyone know of a good above-entry level guitar that is around $400? Right now I'm using a $120 Yamaha Pacifica which is nice, but I think the pick-ups are shit for this game. No matter how in-tune the guitar is, I always have to tune it some more while in the middle of a song just so it knows I'm hitting the right notes.

I was looking at the Ibanez RG350DX used at guitar center for $380 but I just love white guitars. Kind of clouds my judgement :) Opinions are welcomed.

I knew when those were on sale and didn't want one. I'm not to big of a fan of the red to be honest, that is what really stopped me from buying it lol I really did like the deal though, was pretty sweet!
