Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

You on PC or console? The Ubi forums have some FAQs on the cable on computers.

What kind of axe do you have? What kind of pickups (take a pic if you don't know).

Without that info, it's hard to say.

You're right, I'll be more explicit. I purchased a :ps3: 2014 guitar bundle (from amazon warehouse). It contains the les paul junior electric guitar, so I would have expected it to work out of the box. I'm guessing the pickup would just be the standard pickup on the guitar?

I know you are brand new to guitar, but have you tried testing the guitar with a real amp?  You never know, there may be a problem with the cuircitry in the guitar and it might not be sending out a signal?  If the volume is up and the cables are plugged in and the software is running, it should work.

I dont actually own an amp, but I was able to get my friend to lend me his tone cable so I should be able to identify if the problem is with the cable or guitar. My guess is that it is probably the cable. Hopefully I can get Amazon to replace it if it's the culprit.

Up for the volume knobs is all the way clockwise, btw.
With it turned up can you hear your guitar sound coming out of your TV audio?

If not make sure the USB end is fully plugged in to the console and also try unplugging and replug the Real Tone connecter at the breakway point near the USB end.

And you have to strum fairly aggressively for that initial set up bit.

If I purchase a song pack for the original rocksmith (rush song pack) can I play it in 2014? I really want it but I dont wanna play it in the original.

On PC you do have to own the original Rocksmith to be able to purchase any old DLC ... but this is a Steam issue they hope to resolve.

If you're on consoles there are no issues and 2014 can buy and play any and all DLC available.

On your earlier post did you happen to mention that you bought a used bundle? There's your problem right there. Someone probably had trouble with the cable and decided to sell it off. Usually 9 times out of 10 it's the cable. Try your friend's cable and confirm that's the case and then contact Amazon to replace it.

So I have a Vendetta XM and I need some pointers.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GBAR5G/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been struggling with barre chords. Very specifically the fretting of the B string in all barre type situations. Position on the neck doesn't seem to matter much. Most of the times I end up just getting a buzzing there.

I thought maybe the action of the strings was a bit high so I reduced the height a bit. It wasn't scientific, but they are closer now. I don't know if that would help.....yet the upper frets still sit closer than the lower frets. ?

Rocksmith is alot of fun. I also am following all of Justin's Guitar videos tips and tricks.

Any ideas? Would replacing the strings with something more newbie work? I'm guessing its the user and not the guitar. Any ideas would be great. I feel like buying .5 hours of lesson just to get the gross errors ironed out. I also struggle with left hand position. I love to contort my hand/wrist up real good, which isn't correct.

When you hold your index finger over the strings, try turning it slightly on an angle. This way your finger is not arching up towards the middle. It's all about proper form too. Make sure your thumb is about halfway up on the back of the neck. I see a lot of people holding their thumbs at the very top of the neck, even using it on the low E string at times. This is not proper form and will hurt your wrist and make it more difficult to get around the fretboard.

Other than that, practice practice practice. You'll get better with time.

Three song pack this week from System of a Down

"B.Y.O.B."

"Aerials"

"Toxicity"

Love all of these songs but have a feeling they are too difficult for me to play at the moment.

Surprised there is no mention of the new DLC's for Bandfuse...so maybe you might want to check it out... cool stuff. Sorry can't make a link right now, not enough posts.

Wow, they get 15 Hendrix songs (total, eventually)? That's awesome. I see they get a Blues Traveler song too. Would like to have got the same treatment in RS. Not much else I'd get too excited about though

I have to say... I worked for the last week or two in Bandfuse, and I REALLY like it a lot. Seems to be easier to memorize from, and the use of the floating tab, to me, is not near as offputting as I thought it would be. Now that I'm used to it, I kind of like it.

Bandfuse DLC today:

Run-Around - Blues Traveler

Foreplay/Longtime - Boston

Hey Man, Nice Shot - Filter

Pardon Me - Incubus

Fire - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Love or Confusion - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd

All I Want - The Offspring

Cowboys from Hell (Live) - Pantera

Roundabout - Yes

This thread barely gets Rocksmith activity lol I don't think a lot of people here even have Bandfuse.

That being said the Hendrix DLC is awesome. I still think Rocksmith has the better DLC of the 2 games, and a 2 year head start at that, but Hendrix is a huge addition to Bandfuse. Now let's see Rocksmith fight back by signing Zeppelin to the game. One can dream, right? :p

I'm not terribly impressed with the Bandfuse.

5 years ago I mighta thought it was super awesome, but post-Rocksmith the game just don't quite cut it for me.

The interface looks so so so amateur, the videos are distracting, tones are waaaaaaay inferior, and I just don't find it as easy to read on the fly as RS.

I've been reading tab for 30 years, so I already have a grasp on the presentation ... but I think the game would be much harder than RS on a complete noob.

The only things in Bandfuse I covet  for RS are the polyphonic tuner (this is hugely handy), true 'career' mode, and some licenses I'm really really really disappointed RS doesn't have : Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Yes, Jane's Addiction and Faith No More in particular.

I will keep banging away at it though to knock out as many of the trophies as I can until I can find somewhere to dump it at no loss to me.

Gonna take a lotta willpower to not sink any of my Wallet into that Hendrix dlc, though.

Must remain strong.

Hendrix and Grateful Dead are cool but Rocksmith has stuff Bandfuse doesn't have too. Like Red Hot Chili Peppers (heavily rumored to be getting a DLC pack in the near future), Arctic Monkeys (also heavily rumored for the future), they HAD Clapton before they blew it, but maybe there's more to come in the future.. they desperately need to add more blues so who knows.

I don't see David Bowie on Bandfuse or Aerosmith or Bob Dylan, or Def Leppard, or Foo Fighters or Nirvana. You got Satch, White Stripes/Jack White, Radiohead, the Ramones, Oasis, the Stones, The Who, and on and on and on. I could go on a tangent talking about what Rocksmith has over Bandfuse. And the stuff they share, Rocksmith tends to have more of it because of the artist packs they tend to release. I can't say what else Bandfuse will get in the future but so far I think Rocksmith blows Bandfuse out of the water with its music.

Just my two cents.

There seems to be this on going debate about which game is better between the two(Rocksmith or Bandfuse). They both are getting high marks from reviewers and they both have their pro"s and con's. Being a complete noob to the guitar, I am so grateful that there is this approach to learning in such a fun way. Its like saying "Their tiger-style kung fu is strong, but our dragon-style kung fu will defeat it!" I personally own both and plan on using both to achieve my ultimate goal of learning guitar. IMHO, if you can only own one... get the one that gives you the most bang for your buck and then get the other when you can(preferably on sale). I also want to add you guys (and gals) do some awesome posts here, totally appreciate your input. Thanks.

I've been really enjoying Bandfuse. I picked it up when it was on sale and with my bestbuy discount for $31.99. It's been well worth it. I personally don't find the videos distracting in the least. I thing the scrolling tab is really easy to read, and much easier to remember that Rocksmith. The tuner is better in my opinion as well.

I think the soundtrack isn't bad at all, and I think they'll land some really good dlc.

Thanks for the reply. Just last night I was muting low E with my thumb on various barre chords. A shape etc. I'll try get my thumb back down. The index finger at an angle is a great suggestion. I also heard justin from justin's guitar mention the same thing and I have been using that.

Yea finger slightly rolled back at an angle, and just keep playing. You'll get stronger. I use to mute the B string as well, but you get past it. You'll probably have the most trouble at the first fret, but experience and good string action will solve it.

Yes, I purchased from Amazon used. It turned out to be the tone cable afterall. I contacted amazon and they refunded me the amount of the tone cable so that I could buy the cable from their website. Now I just have to figure out why Best Buy sent me the wrong original rocksmith game.

Anyone ever use these? They're an alternative to the different oils you use to condition your fretboard. Reviews for them are awesome, and I just ordered a pack. I just bought an acoustic with an ebony fretboard, and was looking for something safe to use on it.

You only need to condition the neck 1-2 times a year, so one pack should last good bit. They were only $1.99 with free shipping. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/ernie-ball-wonder-wipe-fretboard-conditioner-6-pack

Tried to go back to RS1 today to try to get some achievements and found myself flailing around like a complete spaz. I did just do an upper body workout and that may have had something to do with it, but I think that more than anything it had to the presentation of the original game. The new game is not just better for the obvious reasons like the menus and improved lessons, but also for more subtle changes like the note highway. I can't even put my finger on what's different about it, but something definitely is.

One of the achievements I went for was "ok, I learned" for getting 200k on a master mode song. I've got 100% on master mode on Next Girl in 2014 so I decided to give it a shot. First time I'd tried master mode in RS1. What a difference. In RS1 they really just throw you to the wolves. I like how in 2014 they still show you what phrase you're on. Helps me keep track. Although I guess in real life that wouldn't be there so the way they did it in RS1 is more realistic. But as a teaching tool the new way is the way to go.

I got the one master mode achievement, but I'm not sure if I can handle the old interface to keep trying for more

I thought about going back to RS1 to replay the Clapton songs and get some achievements and also to play that baseball game which was awesome but seeing youtube vids of it reminds me how much better 2014 is.

I won't be forming a real opinion of bandfuse until I can find a copy for about $20
Yeah, I won't get in on BF 'til it hits the $20 price. Have so little free time that I can barely get in time on RS as it is.

Never tried those.

I've been using Roche-Thomas fingerboard oil.

Have had it for almost 2 years and it's still nearly full. A little goes a looong way.

It's funny but I still want to finish off the 'cheevos on RS1. They're mostly on bass but also have a few for guitar.

But know what you mean... biggest differences I notice are the note tracking and lag/timing. It just flows a little different from the newer game.

I haven't seen one negative review, so figured I'd give them a shot. You get 6 wipes for $2. From reviews, it sounds like one wipe if enough to do 2+ guitars. Figure even if you only do one, the pack should last you 3-6 years lol. The bottles oil does last a long time as well, and it equally cheap. These just seemed really convenient.

You can't really make it out, but it has a trans-black flame maple finish

Picked up Eye of the Tiger today. Not a very hard song (got in the 70% range on my second playthrough and I'm still a noob) but it's a very fun song to play, especially if you like old rock ballads like I do. Will probably pick up the other Rocky song (Final Countdown) sometime this week.

I'm at day 15 of my official 60 day challenge and I must say I've made quite a bit of progress. Usually I would get songs in the 10-20% range on my first/second/third playthroughs of them but today I was hitting in the 40s and up. Hit 78% on Next Girl by the Black Keys and in the 70s with Eye of the Tiger. I think once I actually make it to day 60 I'll probably be in much better shape. I've noticed this game has become a lot more fun now that I'm playing somewhat decently. It's definitely inspired me to keep playing.

I really wish this game was out for PS4 (or alternative wish that the Xbox 360 had the same ability to stream games as easily as the PS4 does).  I really would like to watch other people playing this game, and stream my games myself.  This seems like the perfect game for watching other people play, but I just can't do it on my 360.

I second the Xbox One/PS4 version. I think Ubisoft is definitely considering doing a next gen port but I would only switch if they allow DLC/disc 1 import and all that to carry over.

As for watching others play, I find the Riff Repeater videos on Youtube very good. They usually upload all the new DLC when it comes out and the guy playing is pretty good at guitar. Type in "Riff Repeater" in the search bar and you should be able to find it.

The problem, Ubi has said, with the new gen is that neither system has analog audio outputs. Hdmi varies so greatly with regards to lag that they don't think they can pull this off for ps4 or Xbone.

YMMV. Bestbuy was running a 50% off open box items off the original price for the past couple of weeks at my local bestbuy. Not sure if national. Not the best selection of guitars/equipment but found some decent stuff over the past few months. Spent $130 on a decent Squier Telecaster (Vintage custom?) and Rocktron wah pedal.

So...not to be annoying beggar dude but if anyone is willing to let me "rent" their guitar/bass copy of RS1 so I can just do the export, besides paying for shipping I'll be glad to throw a few bucks your way as well. Will send back to you as soon as I get the export done. Don't care about playing it, just want the songs.

PM me if anyone is willing...

Will probably pick up the other Rocky song (Final Countdown) sometime this week.
Final Countdown isn't in any Rocky film...but sure sounds kind of like something out of Rocky IV.

I think you're right, it wasn't actually in Rocky IV, but I know it's been used a lot to advertise the movie, especially in the UK so everyone just kind of chalks it up to being a Rocky song. I think it was even featured in one of the soundtrack albums.

End of the World would've been great but I'm happy with The One I Love. I don't think I'm in it for the whole pack but there's a couple of good tracks there.

Wondering what next week will bring.
