Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

I'm sure you all probably know already but there's a 311 3-pack this week (meh).

Next week is probably Mastadon for all you metalheads out there.

I think I might have misunderstood... if I wanted to do bass (which is presumably easier than guitar) every song also has an included bass part?  I guess I thought it was an add-on to specific songs in game #1

Here's the 311 DLC:

-Amber

-Beautiful Disaster

-Down

rabarba4

How many guitars you have now? Remember you having quite a few schecters a while ago. Starting to have too many myself. Started going with hamer guitars now and need to start making room. Have 7 my self right now.

How does rocksmith and bandfuse handel bass? Been wanting a bass since rocksmith release the update. Got down to a cruisebass or a pilot bass but that will open another can of worms an I am running out of space as is.
Yeah, too many for my sorry butt :whistle2:# .

But off the top of my head I remember 4 Epi's, 3 Schecters, 2 Gibsons & 1 J.Backlund Retronix

rbarba4 won't tell you how many he has... :) I'd like to see pics of them all.
Makes it easier to justify another buy if I don't know how many I really have :whistle2:$

The Bass add-on is specifically for the original Rocksmith release (2011 release) since that one was ONLY Guitar.

If you're playing thru RS2014, then the songs have Bass content from the get-go. This includes any DLC you buy.

Though it's possible there are 1-2 songs that don't have any bass track (star spangled banner is the only one I can think of).

Hit up a TRU I don't normally visit to check out their clearance goods.

And I find a 1st Act electric brown-tagged @ $40, which means $20+tax outta pocket.

It's the single pup, strat like model in black
Just providing an update on this cheapo.

-it's actually more of a doublecut les paul clone

-has a satin finish

-bolt on neck, obviously

-single knob (for volume) inspite of the pic showing 2 knobs & it's made of plastic (really?)

So, if you wonder why we usually say to avoid these suckers as your first guitar, here's what I got outta the box:

-strings untuned (not a big deal)

-nothing intonated, nowhere close (very big deal)

-dirty frets

-sharp fret ends

-the jack stuck inside the body of the guitar

Anyway, tune it up and dig out the jack just to see if it even worked. Luckily it did work so I then set out to fix the other stuff.

-first things first, fix the intonation

-next, find that I need to adjust the truss rod a bit

-now it's time to clean the frets and the oil the fretboard (this will usually eliminate the sharp frets since the wood swells up just enough). Oh and filed the fret ends a bit incase the wood doesn't expand enough.

-the jack was stuck inside because it was missing one of the nuts. Didn't have a replacement so mickey mouse'd it with electrical tape and e-clips (good enough for now).

So now just gonna give a day or two to settle before restringing it.

If you haven't figured it out by now, this is stuff that NO beginner should hafta deal with. Not at your initial unboxing; that's just cruel.

But assuming you're lucky and get one fine outta the box, you've got a guitar that sounds like there's a distortion effect permanently installed in there somewhere, but in a bad way.

At least Rocksmith had no problems recognizing the notes; that's a positive.

Here's the 311 DLC:
-Amber
-Beautiful Disaster
-Down
As much as I like 311, I'm extremely disappointed in this pack. I had anticipated all three of these songs being the selections but was so hoping to be wrong. Amber is the only one of their songs I actually HATE. I've never cared for Beautiful Disaster. If Down goes on sale down the road I might get it, but probably not. If they'd gone with ANY other songs I'd be in so fast it's not even funny. But as it is, I'll just wait for next weeks release.

Does anyone know how to get rid of input lag on the PC version of 2014?

BTW, the first generation of the cable has some issues.  While it worked on my PS3, it didn't detect on my PC correctly.  I tried so many things that other people with the same problem tried but to no avail.  I finally caved and bought a new 2014 version of the cable, and whaddayaknow, it worked like a charm.  I like how UbiSoft just won't admit that their cable is at fault and gives their customers the runaround.

I have two of the original edition cables and they work fine on the PC for me (Win 8.1). It could just be that your cable is on it's way out.

Found the solution to my  sound lag.  Apparently analog sound is the way to go.

As for the 1st gen cable, it still works on my consoles, but not on PC.  Maybe it just doesn't work on newer hardware as I recently upgraded my PC and am running Windows 8.1 P1.  Oh well.

What surprised me was that optical sound causes lag as well.  Then I read up on it, and it said it's due to the digital conversion of the sound input, which totally made sense.

I just now got around to trying out the $20 Bandfuse I picked up from GS a month or so ago and I have to say I like it better than Rocksmith.  I feel bad for not supporting it when it came out, because we probably would have had a hell of a lot more DLC (or a custom DLC scene, at least).

So far I'm not too impressed by bandfuse. I wish it had succeeded too though. I have this feeling like I might have really enjoyed Banfuse 2 if it had ever seen the light of day. As it stands though I don't have nearly as much fun with it as I do with rocksmith, or even playing out of a book or noodling around all on my own.

I learn WAY more working from the website I use for country songs or tab books even than I do with Rocksmith - at least, I learn the songs far better (and just as quickly). I like to just jump in RS to play sometimes, though. Bandfuse hasn't been in the drive since a couple of days after I bought it.

I'm still convinced that Harmonix "gave" Realta a lot of help and knowledge because they knew it would fail and they could pick up the technology for nothing and apply it to Rock Band 4...

I think I read last month that they weren't currently developing RB4. I don't really see the plastic instruments genre rising up once again. If they do use Bandfuse tech for real guitar plug-ins, what happens with the other instruments like drums?

311 is my favorite band of all time, so I'm excited about the new song pack. I wish they would've picked better songs, but it's still cool.

As someone who learned to play guitar using Guitar Pro, I 100% prefer Bandfuse to Rocksmith. If Rocksmith had a more traditional tab presentation like Bandfuse, it'd be perfect to me

They could always do drums with an electronic drum set. Not sure how they'd do it but here's an example of what I have in mind:

I'll take a shot and say there's at least one mother out there playing Rocksmith, so

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Honestly I think that wouldn't reach a big enough audience. Isn't that one of the reasons Rocksmith hasn't done drums? Compared to people out there with guitars in their bedrooms/livingrooms having an electronic drum kit just isn't mainstream enough. Short of selling you plastic or even higher end electronic drum sets, I don't think they would reach enough people to warrant building a game around it. And I don't think plastic instruments are coming back anytime soon. We might see a resurgence of it WAY into the future (as with most things) but who knows when or if that'll happen. Too big a question for a dev to put money on the line over.

I don't know... Rocksmith, on very little advertising at first, and with a very small team, has gone on to sell a million plus copies of the first one and 1.5 of the second (so far). I'd think Haonix would be stupid if they weren't thinking about all the songs they still have licensed and the already installed base that would jump to RB4 on a heartbeat if they used any guitar.

Also - have you seen what he old plastic instruments are getting on eBay? If I were them, I'd give the hardware side to someone else and use a small team dev like RS to bring RB back. Have 1 guitar set, one drum set, no special group releases like the Beatles or GH Metallica or VH or AC/DC - that's what killed RB and GH...

I might be the only one who actually enjoyed Beatles Rock Band haha but anyway. I can see what you're saying about the fan base and yeah I could see people jumping on the game especially for guitar. I just don't see the drum side of it. RS got past this in the beginning because people already owned guitars and it appealed to guitar players from any skill level. They did have a guitar bundle but I doubt that was the reason they sold over a million units.

I think a drum set would either be seen as another plastic instrument or if it were made well enough it would be on the expensive side. They could certainly do it don't get me wrong, I just think it won't touch on as big of a market as the guitar side. If they want to go ahead and make it though I'm all for it. Why not have more competition. It'll only make Rocksmith better in the long run.

RB was just better, plain and simple. Guitar Hero already had a decent fanbase, but Rockband offered so much more. Drums, vocals, an ability to play cooperatively with numerous friends, create and customize your own character, etc. Hell, making the jump even easier was the ability to use your old Guitar Hero controllers with Rock Band.

Here's a flash deal at Guitar Center, good until tomorrow 5/13

Squier strat for $100, sunburst model

Hey, I loved Beatles RB. It's the only RB/GH title I keep handy, even if I haven't played it in forever.

Like it has been said, I feel Harmonix helped out Realta more so to help themselves down the road with a new Rockband game.

At a minimum, it gave them a look at how they approached analog-to-digital signal conversions and at best they found that small dev team that they could bring in to work on a real guitar adaptation for RB.

The bigger hurdle, if anything, will be implementing drums and keyboard along with real guitar. No more digital effects for screw-ups; the game has gotta reflect everything as you play it... the good, the bad & the sloppy.

But I wouldn't expect them to bother with hardware, other than bundling with some manufacturer the way RS did with Epiphone and BF did with Squier. Keyboards and drums would be "buy your own", just make sure it has some kinda of output connector

I don't see price as the big issue in implementing drums or keyboards into RS. When the original added bass support we saw lots of posts asking for advice on bass purchases. We regularly see posts of people that just got the game or are about to get the game and need advice on their first guitar purchase. You can get a brand new set of electronic drums for $200-300 and people are spending that on guitars. Midi keyboards start out even cheaper. I think the biggest challenge would be creating an effective interface

I thought RB already worked with real digital drumsets...anything with midi?
You'd be correct.

I mean, they already had ALL the technology and notation in game for all of this - and a lot of people really liked how RB charted the pro guitar. All they were missing was the ability to use your own guitar... Now they have it (or could have it for pennies on the dollar, I'm sure). Since they use stems, all they have to do is drop the guitar stem out of there is an active regular guitar plugged in and they're good to go.

I'd just be salivating at the thought of RB's library being available to play on my axe...

I would definitely love to have that music list available as well for guitar. I still think the drum stuff could be really complicated but if anything I still have an old GH WT drumset I can use.

What I mainly loved about the GH/RB games was the way they incorporated tours and playing on stage and customizing your characters and all that stuff. They gave you something to progress to by earning things and unlocking things. I think if Rocksmith tried that in the next game they would do really really well.

As seen on the Rocksmith Facebook page...

"Three beefy slabs of Mastodon -- “Black Tongue,” “Colony of Birchmen,” and “Oblivion” – await you today in Rocksmith 2014!"

Wish it was a 5 pack, but it'll have to do. Just purchased it but might be a day or two before I play. Especially excited for "Oblivion". Such an amazing song

Can you recommend a good set for $200 or less that will work with rock band?

I'd be interested in a Rocksmith type drum game if they made one. I had a ton of fun with the RB. Drums.

I'm not into drums and don't know if this will help, Musicians Friend is having a Memorial Day sale.

Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit
for $179.99.

But there was a draw back according to one reviewer:

Pros
  • Audio In Jack
  • Compact - Easy To Move
  • Simmons At A Low Price

Cons
  • Controls 'in Harms Way'
  • Headphone Underpowered
  • Mediocre Internal Sounds
  • Non-standard Midi Port

Best Uses
  • Practice

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

My original purpose in buying this kit was to replace my daughter's broken Rock Band kit (with the 3 cymbal add-on)... I was disappointed to learn only after it arrived that the MIDI connection is USB as opposed to the standard 5 pin plug (search as I might - before and after - I could find no mention of this or see it in the pictures). BUT, being a professional musician familiar with MIDI, it was no big deal to hook the kit's USB MIDI up to a computer, run a standard MIDI cable out of my MIDI interface into the Squire MIDI controller for Wii that I also purchased, turn on MIDI Thru in my sequencer software and the kit worked perfectly without needing to remap any notes!!
The control placement is a little odd and I found myself tweaking the hi-hat and crash pad locations to try to protect it from my daughter's stray hits...
I've also used it myself to wrap my hands around a tune before rehearsal... the internal sounds are OK but again you'd need to go through a computer (as I did above) to get it to trigger an external drum module like a D4 or what have you.
I also found the headphone send to be a little underpowered for my taste... maybe that's by design so users aren't killing their hearing or blowing up headphones then blaming the company... :) Running everything through a small mixer gave my ears just enough extra.
On the whole I'm pretty pleased with the kit - even with its layout falling somewhere between conventional and Rock Band - and you can't beat (sorry - no pun intended) getting the Simmons name on a kit for the price!!

New DLC day:

Five song pack by Cake - "The Distance", "I Will Survive", "Never There", "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and "Stickshifts And Safetybelts"

If I had a choice I'd sub out "Never There" for something else, but not a bad pack. I'll consider it

I don't have Rocksmith, but I am sad that they got CAKE DLC which Rock Band never did. I've always wanted to play their version of "I Will Survive."

If only Harmonix didn't quit RB DLC, maybe they would have gotten CAKE by now...

Playing some bandfuse I really like the tab interface more. The videos give you something to look while you are playing. Just wish they had been more of the complete package with practice modes like scale runner or star chords.

Got so pumped when harmonix had a kickstarter only to find out it was for amplitude.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/harmonix/amplitude

Would be good to have some skilled competition. Bandfuse just felt like someone who knew how to play guitar thought he knew how to design a game too. Either way $20 for like 50 new songs sure can't beat that.

Yup. Still gotta crack open my copy.

Got the last sealed one that Gamestop had in my area.

Wonder what Guitarcenter did with all their stock. Did they ship back to the vendor???

I liked the sound of BF a lot. The scrolling tab was difficult, but not impossible - until they broke the lick lab. Mine is a dust collector/conversation piece now.

What are some good bass picks?

Also, how can I find the model for a Dean bass?
I've got some of these pics http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/micks-picks-bass-guitar-pick-variety-pack-6-pack and like them enough to have justified buying them. But most of the time when I play bass I use a regular heavy guage guitar pick.

Find the serial # on your bass and then type it into google. Even if it doesn't get you a direct answer, it should turn up some good forums results that will point you in the right direction

I have been trying to answer that question for awhile now and now I believe it just depends on your picking arm. If your buff try .88 but Im kinda weak so I like .58 they make it so my arm doesnt get tired as fast.

For bass  I like these Tortex triangle picks, in either .73 or .88mm sizes.  Some people prefer the 1.00 size.

Also, for anyone who's been playing just through Rocksmith and is looking for an amp to play "offline," Musician's Friend has several Acoustic brand combo amps on sale this weekend, including the G10 and G20 for guitars, and B15 and B30 for bass, all at pretty good prices.

BTW, any rumors of new Rocksmith enhancements/versions???  E3 is right around the corner and no hints of what's to come

Credit to slickdeals:

Ibanez BB9 Big Bottom Boost Guitar Effects Pedal, $49.95 on Ebay, Guitar Center and also at Musician's friend. These were $89.95 at MF and still are at many online music retailers, list price is $128.55. The pedal itself is pretty good, it's basically a boost pedal with enhanced low end, not a mega distortion machine. $50 is cheap for any new 9 series Ibanez pedal IMO, generally they're price at $89.95 or more new.

What's the fun in paying for RB DLC? I never understood that. Don't get me wrong I had my fair share of fun with the RB/GH games back in the day but I can't imagine paying money for individual add-on tracks just to tap away on a plastic instrument. Cake came to the right place, a game where you can actually learn the music.
