Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

I've been lurking and getting advice from this thread, so I thank everyone who's helped this thread with useful advice.

However, I read through several pages and tried searching other sites, but I can't get the last bit of info I need. I own the 360 and PS3 versions of the original game (not 2014). Both consoles are connected to my TV via component cable. Are there ANY noticeable technical differences between the two versions, or ANY reason why I might want to choose one over the other? Back when songs went on sale (Apparently they don't anymore), did the price drop for both PSN and XBL, or just one or the other?

I'd much rather play this on the PS3, but a couple of sources say that the PS3 version MAY have suffered from a few crash bugs that MAY or may not have been patched out, and which weren't existent on the 360 version. It's driving me crazy because I can't find anything concrete, though.

I think both got the big packs and I *thin k* that both got the sales at the end of life of RS1. That said, there hasn't been a DLC since then and I don't expect one in the foreseeable future. I have always been under the impression that the PS3 version had less crash issues that the 360, but that's just my impression. I've never had any problems on 360.

I've had a couple crashes on my 360 but it's been a very long time since it's happened. Can't say about the PS3 though.

DLC sales are unfortunately lacking for both consoles. The only one I can think of this year was a handful of songs a few months back but it may have been an Xbox only thing. If you're looking for sales I would go with the PC/Mac version on Steam. Steam sales are a-plenty and it seems like every week the devs tweet out Steam codes to get free songs. If you're quick you can nab a few free ones You also have a large community of user created content there.

I use the console because it's more convenient for me and I love playing on the TV as opposed to a small computer screen, but yes the DLC sales are lacking.

EDIT*

Foreigner 5 Pack:

Cold as Ice

Double Vision

Feels Like the First Time

Hot Blooded

Jukebox Hero

A pack with all hit songs. Not bad at all.

Sales on dlc may be very similar between ps3 vs 360. But one thing that made me want RS on xbox instead is that xbox currency goes on sale quite often while psn currency typically doesn't.

Yeah I'll probably pick it up. It's 5 very good hit songs rolled up in one pack. Always loved this Unplugged version of Double Vision.

From what I remember, the PS3 version of the original game continued to have problems, even after the patches. Now having said that, the problems almost always revolved around Journey mode, other game modes were OK.

Journey mode had you going in to play the setlist in a venue & the game would crash after 3-5 songs. Most people blamed the PS3's memory structure for the problem, kinda along the same lines as how the Fallout games tended to have more problems on PS3 than 360. Seemed to be an issue once you ranked up to lvl 5 or there abouts...

Having said all that, RS2014 seems to have fixed most issues... at least there's FAR less chatter about there being problems with the PS3 vs 360 version. So if you think you'll continue on to the newer version of RS, then start with the console line you think you'll follow (ie: Sony or MS), since you can import almost all the songs from the original into RS2014

Yikes! Just noticed that the PS4 & X1 versions are releasing at FULL Retail of $80.

That's a tough pill to swallow with the 360 & PS3 versions still selling for $40 @ Amazon.  And there were a whole bunch of people who bought 360's and PS3's just for RS... doubt they're interested in upgrading to new consoles.

Hey UBI, no need to copy all of Activision's habits.

^ I was arguing about the same thing when they first announced it. Not only is it 80 bucks (60 for digital copy) but it's a carbon copy of the game. Nothing new added. They could've dressed it up a little by adding a few extra songs or a career mode maybe. You know, gone the Rockstar route and actually give us a new-gen version of it and give people a reason to upgrade. Or they could've made it more enticing to current owners by doing a $10 upgrade thing like Battlefield/CoD/etc did last year. I would've been happy to pay that. Nope!

If I do upgrade at all (and I'm saying if because I expect there to be a new game next year), it will only be at a steep price drop. They take enough of my money on DLC as it is, they don't need to sell me the same thing twice.

Anybody who has ever been curious about custom DLC's can benefit from such a low entry point price for the Rocksmith 2014 Mac/PC version. Personally it's the lowest I've seen it.

I have the PS3 & PC version and usually play on a laptop with the audio running through my Spider amp.  So good & customs rule.

The White Stripes are getting DLC this week! Fell in Love With a Girl was confirmed and Paul Cross tweeted a clue basically confirming Seven Nation Army.

No idea if it's a 3 or 5 pack. I expect at least Blue Orchid to show up.

Anyone excited about this one?

The White Stripes are my favorite but most of Jack's songs are out of my skill level (anything with a crazy solo like Ball and Biscuit). Fell in Love With a Girl and Seven Nation Army are both easy enough, though. I'd love if Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground made an appearance.

This is awesome.  But still not buying anything until they get another DLC sale going.

Come on November... show me some love.

lol I know what you mean. The 2 songs that are on RS already are pretty tough even though I did manage to get Icky Thump to about 60%

I checked out the guitar advice mentioned in the OP, but I didn't see quite what I was looking for. Could anyone provide some advice on picking a bass?

I am looking around the $300 price point and was originally considering either the current Ibanez Starter Pack or the Squier Affinity Jazz Starter Pack. However, I realized that I will be playing almost exclusively with Rocksmith, so I don't know that I need the Amp and other items in the starter packs as I already have picks and a strap. Is there a big enough improvement in buying a bass, alone, at that price point that would justify foregoing the amp in the pack? If so, could someone offer some recommendations?

My previous experience was with an EB01 bass. I can't say I had anything I particularly loved or hated about it.

I think at the $300 point, the Squire pack isn't too bad with precision style bass & the rumble amp. I would recommend trying the precision 1st before buying.

If you just want a bass at the $300 range, Peavey is pretty good in my opinion.

At the $300 price point, the squire pack isn't too bad of a deal. I think the Squire bass is decent (though not a fan) as well as the amp so it will be mostly in a better value/upgrade later range vs a higher end bass guitar by itself. Nothing wrong with some of the basses in that range, I wouldn't recommend playing Rocksmith exclusively with just a bass. It's much better to practice/let it rip playing on an amp unless you have a really really good speaker setup for Rocksmith.

The Killers is next week's band. We'll probably definitely see When You Were Young and Mr. Brightside in the pack. What do you guys think of this one?

Thanks for the advice. I ended up just going to a couple stores to try out the stuff in person. After playing the Squier, I ended up passing on the starter pack, just because I hated the feel compared to other instruments. I ended up going for an SB4 which came out to $250 with a coupon. I have a really nice set of headphones that I use for gaming, since I live in a tiny apartment complex. Hopefully that'll be good enough until I pick up a nice amp.

I noticed the Bandfuse Band Pack dropped to $56.38 on Amazon:

Horrible price, IMO, considering it doesn't even come with the game. You may be better off getting two copies of the game bundle at GS for 5.99/ea, giving you the base game and two cables (plus other various goodies with the 360 version). The only thing you'd be missing out on is a mic and USB hub, which should be easy to substitute, and the acoustic adapter.

and here's the video for this weeks

New DLC Day !!!

The Killers

“Mr. Brightside” – Eb Standard – Lead/Rhythm/Bass
“Runaways” – Eb Standard – Lead/Rhythm/Bass
“When You Were Young” – Eb Standard – Lead/Rhythm/Bass
“Spaceman” – E Standard - Lead/Rhythm/Bass
“Somebody Told Me” – Eb Standard – Lead/Bass

EDIT:  not sure why the video is wonky.  I'll wait a to see if it sorts out on it's own

Well, now it's an even more horrible price: back to $75.

Another opportunity to score Rocksmith 2014 on PC/Mac at Newegg for $14.99(without cable) until 11/3. Rocksmith is making its appearance on Xbox One and Playstation 4  this Tue. 11/4. No bargain though at $79.96 at Amazon. The game will also be released as a digital download, without the Real Tone Cable, for a suggested price of $59.99.
