Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

I had no problem getting the RS1 import. It prompted me to download it the very first time I played RS on the X1.
I wasn't able to get the import and I don't know why.. :whistle2:( and the packs are not working either. I was able to get singles ok, just not packs or the import. Frustrating indeed.

Went looking at Basses. Not going to get one anytime soon but maybe come spring.

Thinking about this one http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBAGSR200

Not really keen on Squire. Not that they are bad or anything but lets just say I have family who would probably yell at me for buying a Squire, lol.
Have you considered craigslist at all? Here are a couple examples in my area of pretty cheap bass guitars, both Ibanez
http://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/4773992214.html
http://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/4790744177.html
Just want people to consider used as an avenue as it can really save them a lot of money.

Musician's Friend has some decent deals on basses. I'm getting the Rogue model since it has pretty good reviews for a starter bass. I'm really just interested in jamming occasionally and messing around with it. I'm a guitar player foremost, so I don't need a 1,200 dollar bass just to play for fun.

I know I sound like a broken record on this, but there is no replacement for trying an instrument in person. I was looking at Squiers and Ibanezes in the same range, but ended up going with this:

www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/sterling-by-music-man-s.u.b.-sb4-bass-guitar

I liked the thinner fretboard on that Ibanez, but the sound was really tinny compared to every other bass in the shop and that wasn't what I was looking for. Then again, maybe you are.

I live close enough to 2 guitar centers and another chain store so I will defiantly go try stuff in person. The one store near me has a few Ibanez Gio basses for around $100-115. Not that I want shit, but for learning I might need to think about that and then trade up.

So I have another quick question. When learning guitar from scratch, do you guys have any other recommended material like for reading, watching, etc on how to play guitar? I would consider lessons but as of right now with winter and other factors I don't have the time for them.

Last edited by a moderator:
Justinguitar has some good lessons. Or just play though the lessons in RS, too. Your local GC may have some cheap group lessons that you can do that will teach you the really basic stuff - holding your guitar, holding your pick, etc.

Yea JustinGuitar has great free video lessons to get up and going. I also subscribe to a few youtube channels that teach song lessons. Off of the top of my head, I subscribe to Martyzsongs, Papastache, and my personal favorite for song lessons, Mike Gross

I definitely stand behind the try before you buy talk. My first guitar ended up being a strat I bought online. I like the look and a lot of artists I like play them, but when it was in my hands, I just don't really care for them. The shape is not for me. I find a strat and les paul to be uncomfortable to play while sitting down. That's just me though, as obviously they're the most popular guitar models. For me, I found my thing to be a Flying V and an Explorer.

Speaking of, what is the best way to store the cable so mine doesn't go shit on me again fast.
Buy a $50 wireless unit from Amazon and neve worry about your cable again.
Or run a regular instrument cable from your guitar to the RS cable, using a mono coupler and NEVER ever touch the RS cable again.

This way all the stress gets placed on the cheaper and easier to replace cable. It'll probably set you back $15 tops (cable+coupler).

Something like this or an equivalent:

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Waves-Female-Stereo-Coupler/dp/B0002E52S4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418696045&sr=8-1&keywords=1%2F4+mono+coupler

I've done both wireless and wired like I stated above.

Thank you.

I will need to buy that. I already have the normal guitar cable, just need the coupler. Not worried about the normal cable, because they hold up well. The RS one is questionable though.

Got up to the bends tutorial and holy god it kicked my ass. Partially because I need to build the callus in my fingers up to bend and I need to practice bending.

If you can get the RS1 pack, play "Good Enough" by Tom Petty a few times. You'll have bends down and callouses taken care of. :)
Do they sell that on the PS4 store yet as DLC? I might buy it at some point. I do have a PS3 as well so if there is some way I can buy the disc or something and transfer the songs over.

Well, the 16th has officially come and gone now and with no Hendrix DLC to be found (Xbox One). I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. I woke up an hour early before work to play it and found nothing. I come home around midnight, exhausted, and turn on the box hoping to unwind to some new tunes, and still nothing. One of the biggest motivating factors to double dip on the same game was to get this dlc, as I'm sure is true with many who've updated. I'm not usually one to worry about release dates or need to be first in line for anything. as a matter of fact, I have a fairly strict $10-12 cap for spending on games that I stick to. I also almost never buy any dlc at all. RS has been an exception to that on both counts. Even though I don't usually care about getting anything right away when it comes out, I really, really cared about getting this right away. At first I was a little bummed that my dlc packs hadn't transfered over. Now that the Hendrix dlc is late, I'm finding myself furious that my prior purchases aren't there.

Yeah I've basically been waiting for the transfer to even bother playing it again...been playing destiny nonstop since release. I need to break it up some though. I'm not sure jimi hendrix songs are going to hold my interest.

Everyone here already knows but for those new to the thread, it's

I'm not usually one to worry about release dates or need to be first in line for anything. as a matter of fact, I have a fairly strict $10-12 cap for spending on games that I stick to. I also almost never buy any dlc at all. RS has been an exception to that on both counts. Even though I don't usually care about getting anything right away when it comes out, I really, really cared about getting this right away. At first I was a little bummed that my dlc packs hadn't transfered over. Now that the Hendrix dlc is late, I'm finding myself furious that my prior purchases aren't there.
I feel the same way.

1. Still haven't received the packs I bought on 360. Are they even still working on this? The game's been out almost 2 months now and they still haven't fixed this? Ridiculous.

2. No RS1 import for me yet. That's 50+ songs that I don't get to play yet because they still haven't done anything about it.

3. No Hendrix DLC despite this being a huge reason for me to upgrade. I think we've been patient enough with this. They dropped the ball hard. I spent $50+ just to buy the same game and they're not upholding their end of the deal here.

I'm sure most of the devs over Ubi are checking out for their end of the year break so I don't expect most of this stuff to get resolved until well into next year, which is a shame as I actually have time off over break and would've loved to put some time into the game. Thanks a lot Ubisoft.. that's what I get for putting $400-500+ into this game easy over the years. That's what I get for jumping on buying the same game on "next-gen." You sure have a great way of showing appreciation to the customer.

I've usually been their biggest fanboy, but this launch has been horrible. I'm glad I kept the 360, that's for sure... Oh - and I got 41 songs free for whenever they do fix the DLC... ;)

Now I'm no programmer, but I would think that porting a game would be easier than building a game. That's what I really don't get about all this. The new systems have been out for a year and so has RS 2014. I also got free songs - 21 of them I think, but almost none that I actually care about - but even that was just an error too.

Bought that coupler adapter. Going to hold off Rocksmith till that comes in, besides I got stuff to practice anyway. Should be in Monday but I have a busy enough week anyway.

I'm seeing the Hendrix packs up on the XBone store. Started downloading them without having to even boot up the game.

Interesting.  I was able to pick up the Hendrix packs for free even though I don't have the game for the Xbox One, I do have it for the 360 though.  360 versions show as being priced at $29.99.

Just checked steam and every single piece of rocksmith dlc/songs I want are not part of the sale.

I was getting all excited...YES I can get the new Sublime song pack, with some Foo Fighters and RATM , but Nooooo

oh well, I will continue to wait

So I got the hendrix songs tonight. Got to play some of them before bed bud not all. One really weird thing that happened is that I have duplicates, just of three of the songs. The duplicated are locked out and if I click it, it says I already own it and it can be found in my games and apps section of my Xbox. Weird. Wish my menu wasn't screwed up, but at least I got my Hendrix songs now

It's because they have tracks previewed (the locked ones), but they got the programming fucked up and Ot doesn't know what tracks you own. A bunch of my songs show up dpuble like that. Annoying, but not a gamestopper. I always arrange by favorite, anyway, because I don't want to go through my whole list of songs.

Yup that's another issue I'm having. A bunch of locked songs show up at random. What I hate about this is that I'm currently stuck on the RS mission where you have to play a "RS Recommends" item. Problem is when you sort the songs by recommended, the locked songs show up first, and since you can't play those, the game doesn't mark the mission as complete. It's so idiotic.

When the mission is to complete a "RS recommends" item, it wants you to do one of those three things under the song title when you click on it. There will be check boxes next to each one. It might look something like this:
Raise your mastery to 23.7%
Play Ducks Redux
Riff repeat the chorus

Finally upgraded to a next gen version. Ended up with the ps4 version for $29.69 from the Amazon Warehouse. Traded my game only 360 copy to Amazon a few days ago for $22, so I can live with an $8 upgrade price and I get a second cable.

Does anybody know how to download the upgrade on xbone if you already played it on 360? I got a prompt and dismissed it, but now can't figure how to get back to it. Thanks.

RS 2014 Xbox 360 vs PS4?

I have a copy for the 360 that I haven't had a chance to open yet but I recently got a PS4.  Is it worth upgrading to the PS4 version?  Any cons?  Thanks!

I wouldn't call it an "upgrade". It is the exact same game minus the holiday songs (although I heard they were delisted so if you didn't already get them it might be too late anyway). For me the other con is that I don't have optical jacks on my stereo. On my 360 I have it hooked up hdmi to tv/rca jacks to stereo. I can't do that on Xbox one or ps4.

The main reason for me to update versions is that I know eventually my 360 will get banished to another room. That may or may not happen before a new game is released, but the free Hendrix pack, plus it going on sale, was enough to convince me to double dip

I'd say for you to heavily consider what console family you want your Rocksmith experience to be on from here on out and base your decision on that. Do you plan to get an Xbox one? If so probably just keep your copy for 360. Is your ps4 going to be your main console destination? Then sell or trade that old copy and get it on ps4. Remember that DLC only transferes forward and within the same console family. With some of us spending hundreds on dlc over the past couple years, it kind of make our mind up for us.

Do you mean the RS1 import? Yeah I missed that too and now I still (2 months after release) can't play my RS1 songs that I paid for already. I asked on twitter and the official RS account assured me that they're "working on it" (whatever that means) so I suppose at some point we will get the import back. Could be a while though. I'm sure they all checked out already for the new year celebrations.

On that note, I still don't have 2 of the packs I bought on 360. I don't even know if they're working on that as I've heard nothing about it.

Just a question regarding the 3 holiday songs they gave out with RS1 years back.. do those transfer over to the X1 version? I don't see them anywhere. I figured they would be part of the RS1 import if you owned them but now I'm not sure. It would be a damn shame if they took away 3 of our DLC songs when we paid a premium to upgrade to next gen. Everything about this next gen version of the game has been disappointing. The game takes forever to enumerate DLC -- sometimes I have to back out of Learn a Song and go back in to see DLC pop up. Sometimes they take a long time to load/preview the songs. The in-game shop takes a long time to load. The game often freezes. The DLC transfer has largely been a mess. I'm very disappointed with it. It feels like they passed off an unfinished product to us at a premium. They should've known better.

That being said, the core game is what it is. I got a new bass recently and have been playing some songs on that which is a lot of fun. I find it funny going back to guitar after bass and how small the frets feel. You definitely need to be more nimble and calculated with guitar as opposed to just slapping the bass rhythm.
