Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

This is why I went with the PC version. The customsforge.com database is huge (11,000+ songs) with a huge variety of songs from hits to the obscure.
Oh really, actually oddly enough I do own the PC version of RS as well. I bought it last year on sale and my cable broke so I didn't bother to re buy it until I got it on sale for PS4. Well this changes everything.

Sorry for the lack of specifics, but I am referring to these two models in particular:

The $300 Vintage Modified:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Telecaster-Deluxe-Electric-Guitar-107920720-i2518203.gc

Versus the $500 Standard Telecaster:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Standard-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-107428765-i2032187.gc

I played both in store and didn't feel much difference between them, but the guy there said the issues between those will be the kind of thing that manifets long term, less than the kind of thing I could tell in the store.
So, these are two completely different guitars. Humbucking vs single coil. You are going to get a much much deeper tone with the Squire, and a brighter bluesy tone with the single coils of the Fender Standard Tele. It's really apples to apples. This would be a better comparison.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Standard-Telecaster-HH-Rosewood-Fingerboard-Electric-Guitar-110883519-i4057124.gc

Honestly, if you are looking at a tele with an HH config, look for one that has a coil tapping system so you can switch to single coil when ever you want.

I was just about to recommend this. For Bass, the problem is that a lot of the cool songs are pretty simple to play. With Customs Forge, I was able to pick up stuff like Ling Tosite Sigure, which have some crazy bass parts.

It was super easy to set up on PC. The only down side is that you don't have gradual progression for most songs and the riff repeater is a bit finnicky when working with custom tracks. At that point though, it becomes just like working with tabs.

Edit - Just saw that the Guitar Center sale has been extended, so I think I am going to bite on a Squier Tele. I only played the Standard in store, because they were out of the other models.

Do you all have any recommendations between these? The guitar stuff I am looking to play will be punk along the lines of Rancid and The Clash with some Emo/Screamo/Hardcore/Postcore bands from my high school days like Billy Talent and Sum 41:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Avril-Lavigne-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-104609508-i1326062.gc

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-72-Thinline-Maple-Neck-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-110609963-i3899483.gc

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Telecaster-Deluxe-Electric-Guitar-107920720-i2518203.gc

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Telecaster-Custom-Electric-Guitar-107920670-i2518198.gc

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Cabronita-Telecaster-109424838-i3225452.gc

Unfortunately, I won't have the time to make it to a GC that actually has any of these in stock, so I will be ordering online.
A humbucker in the bridge and a distortion pedal and you are good to go.

Thanks for all the help everybody. Ended up not biting because the only Tele in the sale was the Avril Lavigne one, which I was hoping was a $300 guitar being sold at $279 because of AVril Lavigne, not a $200 guitar being sold at $279 because of AVril Lavigne.

At the very least I have decided on a guitar to watch out for and learned a bit more about pickup configs. I am going to go back and try out the two "C" style necks they offer, now that I have more time.

Im getting my ass kicked by some chords. is there a resource in game that tells what fingers should be on which strings? Wanna make sure im using good practices

There are. The numbers over the strings while the song is playing are your fingers (index, middle, ring, pinky respectively). Use riff repeater to slow things down to get it worked out. Also, the chord book shows all. HTH.

Yup I would say use the chord book. Also I think at the song selection screen there's a way to check which chords are included in the particular song and you can practice them.

Also, hit up the guitarcade when you get a chance and play the zombie chord game. It's not bad.

I couldn't get Light My Fire by The Doors to install. It's weird I got the rest of the Doors tracks but not that one. This is a step forward but I'm still annoyed with Ubi. It's been what... 4 months now since release? Unacceptable that this is still an issue.

I'm still missing at least one Queen song, but many of my songs are now showing that I own them. On the flip side of things, it appears that they "fixed" the free songs. Every song that I had downloaded for free has gone back to showing a price and is not in my song list

All my "free" tracks stayed. I had to go back to the menu and back into the game for everything to populate, but all my "free" and paid tracks were there still.

My "free" tracks are there as well. Ubi will have to pry them from my cold calloused fingers if they want them back. That's my price for the DLC holdup that's been on-going for 4+ months now. They better not touch my song library.

Welp, looks like Light My Fire is active now for me as well. No more DLC complaining on my part. I'm still not pleased with the game though, especially the enumerating songs lag which is virtually non-existant in the 360 version -- and if you scroll through the song list too fast the album art disappears and it needs a few seconds to load everything up. The store taking forever to load, controller shuts off randomly during gameplay, and also sometimes random locked DLC shows up in my list (not the ones they advertise during new releases). Sometimes DLC I've bought and have in my library will show up a second time as a locked song. It's strange.

I think they should've done a little more testing on their end before releasing a broken game. That's the problem with today's video game industry. It's a release now, patch later mentality that ends up hurting the gamers.

I was bummed that my free DLC disappeared. Now I read that other people got to keep it and I'm really bummed now. Confused too. Didn't I technically "purchase" it when I redeemed it through the Xbox marketplace? It shows $2.99 per song on the marketplace. Is it worth calling xbox? Should be in my download history

I dont think they'll see that "link" now. The whole issue was that those songs were just linked to the wrong thing. It's wierd that it disappeared. I just backed out and came back in and everything was still there. Have you been out and back in?

I've been out, in, and all around. I've also played every one of them at least once before they disappeared. Those songs don't show up in my song list and they show full price in the in-game store. They also show up full price in the Xbox one store, which is weird. I thought if you download something from the store then it's yours, end of story. They are still installed on my console. I wonder if that would matter to Microsoft?

I agree with ironzombie that the free songs acted as a good compensation for making us wait for our paid dlc for what felt like forever

Stop recommending that $100 Las Paul Special its awful. It can't even stay in tune long enough to go through the precision tuner and I always have to retune for certain frets or it won't even recognize them

Stop recommending that $100 Las Paul Special its awful. It can't even stay in tune long enough to go through the precision tuner and I always have to retune for certain frets or it won't even recognize them
Sounds more like intonation problems.

While you certainly could have gotten a stinker, I would check intonation, especially if you need to retune for certain frets

Saw a link in one of the console threads about a new Rock Band...

http://www.xboxachievements.com/news/news-20494-Rock-Band-Coming-to-Xbox-One--Says-Report.html

Light on details, but I'm curious to see what Harmonix does.

And I have no clue if the freebie songs are still in my list. Will hafta check that out soon.

Nice... congrats
I hope you all kept those BandFuse cables because I'm willing to bet money that will be a major part of the next Rock Band. I personally have no intention of getting any more plastic instruments (already have so many) so that might be nice as a change of pace from Rocksmith.

Stop recommending that $100 Las Paul Special its awful. It can't even stay in tune long enough to go through the precision tuner and I always have to retune for certain frets or it won't even recognize them
I agree I would avoid starter guitars like the plague. Nothing wrong with getting something on the cheaper side when first starting out but there's a point when it becomes too cheap. Retuning occasionally when I want to play different tuning songs is annoying enough, I can't imagine having to do it between every single song.

This. Their relationship was far too cozy for Harmonix not to have grabbed that technology. I can't wait. I liked the way Harmonix charted pro guitar, even though the guitar sucked. I can't complain too much, though. Those Squiers bought me most of my Best Buy clearance guitars and pedals...

I did the les Paul special II by epiphone and have had pretty good luck so far. Only seem to need retuning with different song that request it

Can anyone recommend some guitars that are in the $150 range that work well with Rocksmith?
Pawn shop. Look for a cheap epiphone les Paul or a Squier Strat.

The new ones in that range are kind of hit or miss. If you can lay your hands on the actual guitar, you may get a decent one.

I would check local music stores. If you hit the right one, you might be able to get a decent Squire, Epiphone or Ibanez. I would recommend trying them out as in playing them to make sure it feels good, and the electronics are fine.

I saw this one mentioned earlier, is it any good?

Looks so so I guess. For $40 more you can get the Epiphone Les Paul Special II. Check out the video they have on the Guitar Center page and hear whats it about. Then if you like it, order it from Musician's Friend(Guitar Center and them are the same if you didn't know). You will save on tax and its free shipping and you should get it under a week assuming your in the U.S.. If your patient, they have 10% off at times for items over $99. Good luck on your venture.

I was just talking about that guitar haha. I guess if you must gave a new guitar then go for it, if you also buy some $7 tuners on amazon it work much better in RS

What's so fancy about the Bandfuse cables that HMX would use them? I never even went near that game so I heard nothing about this.
Harmonix gave Bandfuse technical assistance, as well as letting them user their instrument icons, etc.

We just figure that Harmonix was giving this "assistance" so that they would have some means to claim the technology if/when Bandfuse failed.

The fact that they could have likely bought the technology for pennies, combined with the fact that Harmonix certainly looks ready to jump back into the Rock Band franchise is just making us guess...

I'm not in the market for a budget guitar, but anybody looking could give the Monoprice "Arrowhead Vee" a shot while it's half price at $99. Use code 5feb for additional $5 off

Yup. Basically this. RB3 initially tried the Squier Strat thing for playing a real guitar, so I'm sure they're more than interested in giving that option in the next game. So why reinvent the wheel with the technology when they already have it? If you picked up BF at 10 bucks or cheaper like some of us you basically got a cheap cable for the next RB game.

On another note, did any of you guys hear the rumors that Guitar Hero was also making a comeback? I'm excited but cautious about this. I really don't think the plastic instrument thing is going to be all that desirable anymore but it'll be interesting to see what happens.

$14.98 here. I actually got it for 12 a couple weeks back. It gives you a Steam code. You can even Google a promo code to save 5% on your purchase. Enjoy.
So close to buying this (already bought the X1 deal), but am worried about how well my MacBook will handle the game. It hasn't done good with other modern games that I have tried (Intel HD4000 graphics). I have a 2012 MacBook Pro non-retina. 2.9GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, external monitor. The MacBook is BootCamped, so I can use the game on both Windows and Mac (yay Steam).

What do you guys think? The only hesitation I have stems from having the Intel graphics to rely on.

PS--Looks like there is a $5 off coupon for all orders, lowering the total to $9.98!! Coupon code is SPECOPS5OFF and expires 3/2/2015

PPS--IronZombie, do you have a referral key I can use when I register? You deserve some credit for referring me to them. Thanks!

Can't Steam codes can be used twice? Once for Mac and once for PC. Makes it $5 each if I split it with someone?? Or does it only allow me to use it with both OS on my account?

Your MacBook should handle it fine. The Steam version allows you to install on both platforms from your account.

PS - Customs!

I have a 4GB RAM 2012 Mac and it runs very smoothly on mine so you should be fine ;)

One thing though, if you do go the whole custom DLC route then just be aware that loading all your DLC into the folder will not make it all show up. At least it doesn't for me. I have to exit the game and pick n' choose a handful of custom songs to put in at a time. Maybe that's just a limitation on my RAM, who knows. Good luck.

I'd be happy to refer you to the site if you'd like but I don't think they give an actual link. There's an area to put in the friend's name/email and I guess it sends you a link to join. No need to go out of your way though.

Edit: "MACGAMES5OFF" will give you 5% off your purchase, but it's a one time use code. I bought SimCity as well through this site and the code didn't work anymore.

That's funny... I thought they were working on the next version for a Holiday 2015 release and just slap 2016 on the box (you know the whole Madden process of naming games)
