Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Either of these should be good as a first guitar. So first and foremost choose the model you like more; love at first sight if you will. You'll be more motivated to keep playing if it's something you like.

Now keep in mind that at this price range, you will find quality control issues,. You could get a good one on your first shot and you may need to dig thru a few to find the good one. But if I were to guess, you might need to go thru a couple Squiers to find the good one. Same might happen with the Epi, but it's been my experience that the "limited edition custom shop" models get a little more TLC before they're shipped (talking about the logo on the back of the headstock).

Whichever you choose, look the whole thing over. Some things to watch: screws are present and screwed in straight, no cracks, no chips, neck looks straight, knobs turn freely, parts aren't loose, etc. Also try holding the guitar like you would while playing and run your hand up and down the length of the neck, paying attention to the fret ends. They should NOT feel sharp.

In the end buy what you like and look it over for any issues. And post here if you come across problems
Oh and you guys are gonna owe me guitar pics for my reply, it's the rule ;)
thank for the reply I decided to past cause found out it only $30 off that in store it normally only $130 and is the $100 is almost a monthly thing so I think since spring is almost here I might wait and test my luck with some garage sales and flea markets and hope for a amazing find...hopefully lol

Honestly I believe you should never buy a guitar on looks but on playability. Not all guitars are created equal. Pick up the guitar and see how it feels in your hands. Hold the neck and slide your thumb across the back of the neck. Reach the top frets while still having your thumb on the back of the neck. The width of a fretboard also makes a difference. Different woods, pickups and strings attribute to the sound of a guitar. Also the necks are different sizes. I prefer slimer necks with a satin finish. My hands get sweaty and on a shiny neck finish it gets sticky on the back of the guitar neck. Also I have short fingers. If you can buy a mid level price guitar $400-$800. Those begiiner guitars are usually made of plywood which is the worst sounding tone wood for a guitar. In the specs it is listed as solid body wood not mahogany, basswood, alder or another popular tone wood. Usually the quality, electronics, sound and wood will be better on a mid level priced guitar. If treated right it should last you a lifetime. Usually a beginners guitars break in the long run. So if your serious about playing guitar try to get a mid level guitar. If not just get a beginners guitar.

Thats the rub... As a beginner, you have ZERO point of reference to notice all those differences. C shape, d shape, fretboard width, string spacing, vintage frets jumbo frets... There's no way a beginner is gonna figure it all out. Which is why they need to start using a guitar for hours and hours before they'll be able to recognize the subtleties

And in regards to the two guitars mentioned before, both are solid starters. There's a lot of crap in this price range and these two are on the good side of stuff. This doesn't mean they'll be perfect, but rather good models to look at and they most likely will be good as is. Same goes for the Dean vendetta mentioned earlier. If you get a stinker have'em switch it out.

I've had an Epi les paul jr and Dean vendetta for 4 years now. The Epi has gotten hundreds of hours of use and the dean tons of abuse (abuse since thats the one my friends use when trying rocksmith for the first time). Neither one is remotely close to falling apart. Find a good one from the get go and you'll have a guitar for life

So yeah, these are fine . If you're starting fresh and choosing one of these, look them over and if you have issues post here. We'll try to help you figure out if its something simple or if you should just return it.
If you want to spend more, do it... It's your money. I'm just approaching this from the same position as when i was a newb, i wanted to try to learn but not commit a ton of cash.

I started with the epi les Paul special ii a year ago, and still enjoy playing on it. Still a noob but I picked up a couple other guitars since and I think that one is still my favorite

What do you guys think for a beginner, the squier or the les paul? Going to drop some money on one this weekend, i really prefer the look of that squier in the seafoam green, but if theres a big gap in quality I'd just assume get the LP for the same price. Complete newbie when it comes to this stuff but I'm looking forward to diving into rocksmith once i get a half decent guitar.
Let me put it this way. Figure out if you like the sound of a Les Paul or Strat. Both are going to be decent guitars but you will want to pick the one that you like the sound of better. I would recommend stepping up from the very base $100 model to something a bit more robust if you can afford it (something in the $200-250 range). Quality control will be much higher and you will get an overall better instrument. If you can't afford it no worries, just go to an actual store and try before you buy. I wouldn't recommend buying off the internet for a first time purchase because you will want to find the instrument that fits you best. Just trying it out through an amp will tell you if the instrument is built well enough.

Also for a first time purchase be cautious buying used. I bought a used bass to learn and the electronics on it are shit and it has had a shitty repair job once or twice before I even got to it. I need to get a new bass but it will be something down the road.

I second a lot of the advice above, but would deviate a bit.

While you may not understand the terminology behind the different neck shapes, going to a store and holding it in your hand and trying to make a basic chord shape is incredibly illuminating.

I posted my experience buying a bass a while back, but the gist was that everyone on the internet said Squier P Bass or J Bass. I went to the store and both felt pretty awful in my hands. The way a neck fits in your hand, the weight distribution across the body and thumb rest locations are all little details that you may not understand but will be able to feel spending five or ten minutes with a guitar in a shop. I ended up with a bass that no one had recommended and, aside from a loose jack, has served me well for a year and a half.

Also, this will sound weird, but think about your playing situation. I live in an apartment and so I only play with Rocksmith, through my pc, with headphones on to reduce audio lag. What this meant was that sound really was a minor issue and an area where I could skimp on quality. By the time I got around to playing through an amp in a situation where it mattered, I had learned enough to make an educated decision and put real money towards my gear. My point being that if you are only going through Rocksmith, feel is more important than sound, because RS does so much processing even awful guitars sound pretty good.

It's been a few years since I've had a computer capable of running anything released in the last few years, but bought a laptop over the holiday and installed 2014 on Steam this past weekend. As much as it annoys me when users release shitty customs, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. With the addition of customs this game just got a loooong life extension for me.

Picked up 2 of the 3 .38 Special songs tonight. Really good songs to play. The tones for some of the cleans aren't great, but that '70's distortion is awesome. I love me some redneck arena rock, and had been hoping that "Hold on Loosely" would make it to Rocksmith eventually. Getting "Caught Up in You" was just a bonus...

If anyone is looking for a bass, I think I found a good deal.

Squier short scale Jaguar, normally $179, currently available for $138 directly from Amazon, or for $127 from Music123 via Amazon.

I'm so tempted to add this to my collection... of instruments I honestly never play.  Instead, I'll share it with you all, hope someone gets a good deal and enjoys it!

To add the newb view of a couple guitar models, I first jumped in with a $70 Monoprice Strat, and reviews from people who actually know their stuff, was that for the price, it's an outstanding guitar. From what I've heard, their quality may have fallen off since those earlier guitars, but as a Rocksmith, and now outside of Rocksmith guitar, it served admirably.

As I've gotten in to trying to stumble through various songs and styles, I decided to bite on the Les Paul Special II from the other day at $100. I'm no definitive voice on guitars, but I like the sound a little better, like the size and fit of the Strat more.

If this hobby really grabs a hold of me, my next guitar purchase will probably be in the ~$500 range, but for starter guitars, I've been really happy with both, and far more experienced players than myself have had very positive things to say about my two options.

Those 99$ les Paul specials are quite nice. I got one just so I didn't have to worry about beating the shit out of my "better" guitars and I'm loving it. No brainier if you're looking for a good beginner model- it smokes with a little setting up.

That thing is freaking beautiful. Most strat colors are boring and a dime a dozen. Looks good with both fingerboards IMHO.

I'm the same way. I'd pick a crazy color over black any day. Of course, I don't pass up amazing deals based solely on color, but when I can, I grab something different...

Rocksmith and a ton of DLC are on sale right now for the Steam version.  I picked up $47 worth of songs tonight...

Totally worth it, though.  It's been about five weeks since I started guitar in general (January 1), and I'm starting to be able to play real songs. :)   About 60 hours of Rocksmith and dozens of hours with other things.  In general, if something has a ton of power chords, I can usually play it (aside from the inevitable solos), so that covers a big chunk of the songs I want to play.. lots of punk rock.  For the most part, I've stopped playing songs on their easy difficulties: the first thing I do when starting a new song is crank up the difficulty to the max and, as long as it's not full of a large variety of single notes or chords that contain more than two characters in their names, I give it a shot.

In summary, Rocksmith is awesome.  Still a lot of learning to do, but this is much further than I ever expected to be in five weeks.

Rocksmith 2014 is on sale on PSN for $15, or $40 on Amazon for disc+cable. I picked up a disc version today for the extra cable and for easier multiplayer than lugging around my PC or laptop.

edit: Oops, $20, not $15.

Anyone foresee a new Rocksmith (2016/2017) coming?

With this sale, I could potentially upgrade my hard copy PS3 version to digital PS4 version. Might lose a few bucks at most.

Just don't know if I should bother or just wait for the next one.

The devs say no. The difference is that the other people who usually say yes aren't saying yes... I think it'll be a while.

4 pack incoming tomorrow - Hit singles VI

Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running
Loverboy - Working for the Weekend
Sublime - Badfish
Perfect Circle - Outsider

If you want to save on another $15-25 in tax you can always price match at musicians friend (and others). Both of those BC Rich guitars are in stock righ now at MF. Didn't check anywhere else

BandFuse is on sale at Gamestop for $0.97.  I bought it a few weeks ago at the recommendation of another Rocksmith player, and it's a pretty fun game to play in addition to Rocksmith.  Similar concept, but with some different ideas/approaches, and supposedly much better support for vocals (haven't tried it yet).  I'd say Rocksmith is still better overall, but a little variety is good in life.

Not sure whether GameStop's products include the required guitar adapter, but there's a "band pack" on Amazon for $30, which includes all of the adapters you'd need to play all instruments.

If anyone needs a cheap compressor pedal, I found a deal on this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002X8Y4SQ

It's listed at $25, but when I added it to my cart and went to the checkout page (not just the view cart page), it brought it down to $20 due to a hidden $5 Prime-only discount.  Oddly, the discount disappeared when I added a completely different pedal in addition to this pedal, but reappeared when I removed the other pedal... maybe some glitch on Amazon's part.

Why a compressor pedal?  I've been told you can split your guitar's signal into both Rocksmith and your real amp using a compressor pedal plus a splitter (people say the signal gets too weak upon splitting unless you have the compressor involved).  Going to try that out tomorrow when this stuff arrives. :)  If it works out, it should make for a nice lag-free experience where I can better hear how my guitar really sounds instead of Rocksmith maybe making me sound better than I'm actually doing.

Quick hit that I just saw in a google ad:

Epiphone Les Paul Special II, in wine red, for $99.00

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Special-II-Electric-Guitar-J07391.gc

Think these normally go for about 160
Maybe irrelevant because it's out of stock now anyway, but I picked one up. My first guitar, purely for RS, was a Monoprice Strat. First time I ever picked up a guitar, had a friend at work who plays in a local band mess with it a bit, and he loved the thing. Swapped out strings, made some minor tweaks, but he had lots of nice things to say about it. For a beginner who barely knows what he's doing, I have loved it too.

Jumped on the LP Special, and...just meh. The action seems really high. I'm guessing changing strings will help a little. I get a lot more fret buzz than the Strat. The sound is OK. It just doesn't sit in my hands the same. Thicker neck, pickups seem far cheaper. Anyway, I guess I finally understand why more experienced players comment that the best way to buy a guitar, is play it and make sure you like it. I might keep the LP, and should change the strings, but right now it hardly gets played sitting next to the Strat.

YMMV :D

$20 is not really a deal for that pedal. Behringer makes very low quality pedals. I bought a couple different ones that went on sale for $9/ea with free shipping and no tax. I really miss those $18

Check that the knobs on the tuners (the parts you turn) are tight. These guitars have cheaper tuners and they loosen producing a horrible buzz. You can figure out which by holding the knob firmly and plucking the corresponding string- it stops when you grab the loose one.

Update: the compressor pedal + splitter combo I mentioned above arrived today and is working pretty well.  The splitter introduces some annoying noise-- nothing unbearable unless my amp's gain is turned up, but that means I have to play with a mostly clean sound.  Maybe that's a good thing for spotting mistakes while playing.

I'm not experienced enough to give much of an opinion on the sound of the compressor pedal, but it seems to be doing its intended job (making sure there's enough signal to reach both the amp and Rocksmith) without any problems.  Including the $10 AC adapter for the pedal and $5 for the splitter, that's about $35 for the ability to play Rocksmith through your amp if you already have two guitar cables handy.

Edit: On second thought, I think the noise is a guitar issue and not necessarily the splitter's fault.  The noise was happening with my wife's guitar whenever the gain wasn't really low, but it's not bad at all with my guitar even with the gain cranked up pretty high for a nice distortion sound.  YMMV I guess.  But man, playing Rocksmith with an amp lag-free is such a nice experience.

Starting the 60 day challenge Monday night. Picked up the Xbox one version back when deal of the day for BB few weeks ago (or more). Took me a while to find a left handed guitar that I liked, and worked. Ordered a ESP Ec 100...never came. Next tried a Dean MLX, loved the feel but had a bad switch and plug in. Finally found a "used" Epiphone Les Paul Standard Pro top Plus on Amazon marketplace. Third time was the charm!

I bought my first guitar since the great Best Buy clear out a couple of years back...

Taylor 210e Deluxe Acoustic/Electric in sunburst. Bought it from Guitar Center for $835 (on sale from 1000) and got $140 of Guitar Center bucks to use in June... Sweet sounding guitar. I just kind of fell in love with it in the store.
