Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out
What do you normally get in these goingtoday mystery items. Any past experiences?
None at all... I figure it's usually strings or something... then randomly, they send a guitar or a pedal or something...

Edit: Looks like a bunch of people on Woot did this last time and they got a Music stand light (it was just a cheap assed book light)... So, we'll see.

Never done it before. Bought in outta b.a.c. envy. Never been able to snag one. Eventually stopped checking woot altogether.
Here's hoping it's something decent.

Their sister site, moonlight special, did the same thing a week or two ago. But their items are more random. Like recently, they've been putting up a bunch weapon accessories/gear.

Couple of quick hits.

American Musical weekly deal is for the Audio Spectrum wireless guitar system for $29.95
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_...Email&utm_content=Inhouse&utm_campaign=120318
Small discount from the 34 they normally charge. But hey FREE shipping and the Amazon reviews seem ok. Gonna do some checks on other wireless units and see what they go for.

Some Details: battery powered, 1/4" to 1/8" cables included (means you'll need a 1/4" mono coupler to use with Rocksmith), 100' max range, come in either 169.5 Hz or 171.905 Hz

FYI, AM stopped listing the weekly deal on the site and only make it known to their email subscribers. Don't know if the link price will work if your not subscribed

Other deal is Musicians Friend Stupid deal of the Day. Only their listing a bunch of stuff again (really, its the same stuff as before)
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid-deal-of-the-day-limited-quantities?icid=200493

Amazon keeps floating the price on Rocksmith. At least the
iconxbox360.gif
version dropped to $68, but
iconps3.gif
is at $77

And now for the other instrument deals:
Amazon has the Kustom the Defender 5h tube amp for $73 (including the extra 15% discount you get on the final checkout page). Just make sure to choose Amazon as the seller.
http://www.amazon.com/Kustom-The-De...cal-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1332845580&sr=1-1
Been reading alot lately about this model. Overall, a nice intro to the world of tube amps as well as a nice base that you can upgrade/mod as you go. Here's a sorta howto/review thread from the My Les Paul forums
http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/squawk-box/96443-kustom-defender-5h-many-pics.html
And for my fellow noobs, remember you'll need a speaker cabinet to pair up with this head unit.
American Musical's daily deal is a 20' instrument cable for $6.95
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx
The weekly deal is for the Monster Cable performance pack at $18.95
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_...Email&utm_content=Inhouse&utm_campaign=120318
Going today has the Hohner Old Standby harmonica for $8.99, free shipping
http://www.goingtoday.com/
Moonlight special has the Hal Leonard Guitar Chords Deluxe book for $10, free shipping. It's a bit cheaper at Amazon though
http://www.moonlightspecial.com/

Gotta say... Thank God for Guitar Hero and Rock Band... I just sold every bit of cheap assed Target clearance GH and RB stuff that was laying in my closet, and I have just about enough to buy a Line6 Half Stack... You gotta love Ebay!

I haven't done too bad... The PRS SE that I bought was mostly paid for by selling penny guides that had gone up in price while they sat in my bookcase :) CAG is so great!

Just noticed that Target's B2G1 free sale works on Rocksmith, online only.
http://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=rocksmith&category=0|All|matchallany|all+categories
Should work out to no more than $60/copy. Maybe you can convince some buddies or sell off the extra copies

American Musical's deal of the day is the "A" frame guitar stand @ $5.
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx
And goingtoday has the String Swing guitar hanger, but it's cheaper thru Amazon so here's the Amazon link
http://www.amazon.com/String-Swing-...cal-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1333010239&sr=1-1
Gotta say... Thank God for Guitar Hero and Rock Band... I just sold every bit of cheap assed Target clearance GH and RB stuff that was laying in my closet, and I have just about enough to buy a Line6 Half Stack... You gotta love Ebay!
Damn that's good! Didn't realize GH/RB stuff was still worth anything. Now you got me thinkin'
Any word on the mystery boxes?
my goingtoday box should arrive tomorrow.

But did get the moonlightspecial box. Got a Cal bears cap and mandolin string set. Did I mention moonlightspecial throws up random stuff:lol:. Guess I gotta play Craigslist Hero and see what I can get

I've never been fond of A-Frame stands that don't support the neck. Too easy to knock them over if you've got a bunch of guitars sitting in a room.

I highly suggest avoiding a Line 6 stack. Just, no. Their cabinets are awful and below even Crate quality from the mid 80's.

Also, there's absolutely NO reason to have a cheap wireless deal. If a $30 wireless is appealing, you're not playing big stages. When you get to the big stages point of your guitar playing life, you're going to require substantially better than $30 wireless quality. Cheap wireless units are just goofy doodads with no purpose. Buy a Boss DS-1 instead and solder some different caps into the thing to have a really nice pedal that you'll have for your entire life.

If you're just buying wireless for playing RS and stuff, a $30 wireless would probably suffice. I play through a Digital Reference system that works great. It's nice to be wireless walking around the room when you're playing.

Hellomusic.com has the Kustom half stack on sale today for $135. Use coupon code HM30NEW to knock off 30 bucks.
This includes the Kustom Defender amp I posted about, up above (Amazon deal) but also includes the Kustom 1x12 speaker cabinet.
If a $30 wireless is appealing, you're not playing big stages.
That's the whole point. Most of us aren't playing big stages. $30 wireless is about convenience. If there is a drawback, it's battery life. Receiver only runs off batteries; no AC connection

American Musical's new deal today is for D'Addario EXL Regular light gauge strings. 10-pack plus free string winder for $22; little over 2 bucks/pack
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx
EDIT: should mention FREE shipping for orders of $30 or more, so add a cable or more strings to your order
Goingtoday has Danelectro effect pedals for 20 a pop. But again, better off checking Amazon

How'd everyone else do?
Got this red Guitar & case. The guitar is worth the price just for its looks. Its awesome!!!
Congrats man:beer:, have fun!
A bit jealous. The lack of talk about those DBZs made it easier for me to ignore 'em
I'm thinking about getting Rocksmith, and I have $40 credit or so on both Amazon and Best Buy. What's this unlisted Best Buy exclusive content? It doesn't mention anything about any incentives to make me purchase it.
Nothing too valuable. Nice to have but not a deal breaker; 3 effects pedals and unique Gibson guitar
From BB's site:
"Order your copy of Rocksmith and receive three Best Buy exclusive in-game effects pedals:

• The Powerchorder instant power chord harmony pedal allows players to easily execute complex shifting power chord riffs and 5th harmony leads simply by playing single notes.
• The Trem-Olé! vintage surf/Rockabilly/Western movie tone effect pedal couples a fixed speed, selectable tremolo with a slap-back delay.
• The Robo Crunch high-tech, low-fi synth simulator combines a bit reduction effect with a slow moving flanger.

Plus, you'll also get access to a unique in-game Gibson guitar. The S-1 guitar includes unique pickups that were designed so they could produce both humbucking and single-coil sounds."

Looks like Toys R Us has the best sale this week, unless Amazon decides to do something. Buy 1, Get 1 40%off: good on all video games and movies. So pair up Rocksmith with that pricey box set you've been wanting to get.
http://www.toysrus.com/search/index...origkw=rocksmith&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2254197&sr=1

Separately, goingtoday has a Dunlop Picks counter display with 216 picks for $43. Might as well open a store if you go for it:lol:
http://www.goingtoday.com/
Anyone with a VCR can get the Intro to Rock Guitar video for $5.15 from Moonlightspecial.
http://www.moonlightspecial.com/ Or you could buy the DVD version for $15 from Amazon
And Musiciansfriend started up an April Fools Sale; save 13% on a item priced $139+

Think I've mentioned before that I stopped Event playlists to focus on the minigames, specifically Scale Runner. Now average 9mil per scale. Basically working on getting every version up to 9.

But man, its getting harder to keep my concentration. I'll rip a few good runs increasing my performance. Then, for whatever reason I lose it and get stuck at 5mil. Is it just me or does Scale Runner require a whole lot more concentration than the other modes?

I need to do that, as well. I've just been doing the songs that I've mastered over and over to reinforce them in my head... I did go back and play some songs that I didn't like just to get a score and am amazed at how high I go on the first or second run...

On a personal note, I'm now down to 6 guitars... 3 electric, 2 acoustic and a resonator/dobro. I'm watching a couple of dobro sales, though. If the value on Ebay is high enough, I'll get rid of that, too... That's as low as I've been in 10 years since I bought a bunch of them within a few months.

Quick update on the DBZ guitar deal. Buddy tried to order one today, but couldn't get the discount on the case. Called up WMS and found out the deal expired on 3/31. But they were cool and reactivated the deal.
http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/search.aspx?si=&sp=dbz+barlt
So, you have at least one more week to get the combo discount on the guitar + case. If you dig it, go for it

Now, if you want something more fierce, you can get the DBZ Venom II for $399 with discount code "venom2"
EDIT: forgot to add that it's available in Red or Black. And it comes with a hardshell case
http://www.beyondeleven.com/DBZ-VNM2-RE-p/vnm2-re.htm
No idea how long it'll last.

And moonlight special has patch cables for a buck a pop. Flat $5 for shipping, so just get a bunch of cables in one order to make it worthwhile.

You got a few hours left before this deal expires

Not much going on with Rocksmith deals. But want a $50 electric guitar? Then check out the Stupid Deal of the Day
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid/?icid=200510
20 off its everyday price. Check out the reviews on the site

Goingtoday has a guitar chord rubber stamp for $5.01
http://www.goingtoday.com/
Easy way to write down chords as they get thrown at you in RS

Music123 is trying their hand at weekly deals. The powered pedal board deal seems good
http://www.music123.com/pages/123Deals

Oh, and go in person to Guitar Center for a $60 Epiphone acoustic. It's their weekly deal. I would think it's better than the First Act models on clearance at Target
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Big-Cool-Deal-g25903t0.gc

So I've always played on an acoustic/acoustic-electric guitar and I've never tried an electric before. The $50 one has good reviews for the price and I was wondering what the differences are between playing an acoustic and electric. Is it worth owning both?

New DLC Today:
*Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
*Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
*This Love - Maroon 5

Don't play acoustic, but everything I've read makes it sound like it'll be easier to play the straight-up electric vs. the a/e; lighter strings, thinner neck. That sorta stuff.

They do play a little differently. Electrics play a bit "easier" than acoustic, meaning the strings are usually easier to press down, the neck is thinner and you don't need to put as much force in the strumming. So if you've only played acoustic types, going to electrics might be easier to play for you.

I know if I only play my acoustic for a week then go to my electric, it's like someone hit the easy button.

If you want to play both, it really just depends on your style.

Rocksmith is $60 at Walmart in-store, price rollback. Posted by someone over on the RS forums. YMMV, unless your Walmart is like mine. Which would mean there is no rollback, EVER.

Moonlight special has hanger bras on sale. Says they're design for pegboard hangers, but look like they should work with those String Swing hangers or guitar stands with neck supports
http://www.moonlightspecial.com/

You can get a fatty (3.5") leather strap for $10 from American Musical. Just remember you need to spend $30 for free shipping
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx

Also noticed that Amazon carries a grommet version of the Dunlop strap, for $12.71

Guitarfetish has a bunch of Xaviere guitars on clearance; most in the 130-150 range

Amazon has been playing with the price of the Schecter c1 Pro., another Amazon exclusive model. It hit $399 the other day, but it's up to $470 today. Might be worth watching in case they drop it again. (by the way, the Schecter at BB went back up to $599:roll:)

American Musical's daily deal is for the Digitech multi-effects pedal.
Model #rp155 @ $69.95 and if you prefer the fancier model, go to zzounds.com for the rp255 @ $129.95

Pretty good reviews and a easy way to connect to your computer with all the included effects or use it with headphones.

So would anyone recommend the DBZ guitar? I've had my eye on it since I sold off my crappy RB3 Pro Squier for ~275 bones. Now I'm guitar-less but I wanted something decent.
So would anyone recommend the DBZ guitar? I've had my eye on it since I sold off my crappy RB3 Pro Squier for ~275 bones. Now I'm guitar-less but I wanted something decent.
Well, they're spec'd out nice and coming from the founder of Dean guitars. But DBZ hasn't been around very long. The few reviews out there are for the higher end stuff. So who knows how that translates to this model.

Do know the red barchetta woulda been mine if my buddy had bought the XMT from me instead of the DBZ:bomb:. He's suppose to get it any day now. And I expect to get some time with it since he comes over to my place for his RS fix;)

Someone else mentioned getting it, so maybe they'll give their impressions. And IIRC, the guy who posted pics over at Harmony Central really liked it

UPDATE:
Buddy came over with his DBZ today and I got a chance to play it. Aside from being outta tune, it was in real good shape. Plays as fast as the XMT, but it doesn't tire my hands out like the XMT. The neck is just a touch thicker and the fretboard is a little wider

Spent some 15min with it going thru scale runner and harmonics. Never ran into problems. Notes played cleanly and all harmonics rang out nicely

Overall, sounds nicer to me than the XMT. But do not know if it's the pickups or the different wood. Man it's gonna be torture seeing it and not using it:cry:
UPDATE #2:
Checking WMS and saw the DBZ guitar is still $159 but the $40 case deal is dead.

No Rocksmith deals advertised this week. But try Walmart and see if your local store did the rollback to $60

Now, check Amazon's lightning deal at 9:00am cuz they're throwing the Schecter c1 Pro in there. It was $400 a few days ago before they raised the price (probably for this LD)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27
Update: pretty good deal. Sold @ $300

Then there's the Stupid Deal of the Day. Rogue Analog Delay Effects pedal for $29.99

Guitar Center has 18' Live Wire instrument cables for $6 each

Amazon has the Ibanez Black Night GRGA32T guitar on sale at $220

And you can pair it up with American Musical's daily deal. Ibanez 25th anniversary guitar strap for $10
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx
Finally, the Stupid Deal of the Day is a Squier Bullet Blackout telecaster for $150
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid/?icid=200510
I can't believe I got this for Christmas and it is still shrinkwrapped. Not. Enough. Time.
You could have been playing solos by now. :)

That Ibanez is a nice axe for $220... But stay away from it if you're gonna use it for Rocksmith... Floyd Rose tremolos are not fun to go to alternate tunings and back.

The Bestbuy ad thread says Rocksmith will be $50 during the week of 4/15 -4/21. So if you buy/bought now, go back next week for a price adjustment.
BB ad thread http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319166

Don't like Bestbuy? You can get RS for $58 at Amazon, only choose J&R music as the seller (free shipping).
http://www.amazon.com/Rocksmith-Xbox-360/dp/B004S5PBM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334133350&sr=8-1

And those DBZ guitars, thru WMS, have the deal going again. Only this time they're including other models as well. So buy the LT model @ $160 and get the case for $40. Or buy the LT FR trem model @ $260 and get the case for $40
http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/search.aspx?si=&sp=dbz+bar+lt
Or go for the Pro Barchetta models @$500 and get the case for $40
http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/search.aspx?si=&sp=dbz+bar+pro
Specs are a bit different between the models so head over to DBZ guitars for more details

PSA time:
If you're still rocking the stock strings, STOP. And change those suckers! You'll notice a huge difference in tone and playability, as long as you're putting on a decent set of strings

Just did my 2nd change last night and man, it really wakes things up:hot:

No doubt. I never changed strings until Rocksmith... It makes a huge difference in playability and comfort. Luckily (or unluckily), I'm busting more strings since I play RS, so I change strings more often. I've been using some Dean Markleys I picked up a few years back at GC during one of their big sales (it was like 20 sets for 20 bucks), so they don't last as long.

Hit up a Target and Best Buy earlier today and both stores had Rocksmith priced at $60. And checking Gamestop and Target, online, they also have it at $60. So a lot of choices available.
If anything, Ubi may have finally made the decision to lower the MSRP.

Oh, and the Target I hit was clearing out First Act guitar stands at about $5

American Musical's daily deal is for Roadie lights, aka mini flashlights @ $5. Never know when you'll need 'em
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx
EDIT: forgot to add that Guitar center has a Friday the 13th sale, good 'til 4/16. Save 13% on an item priced $130+
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Promos/ClaimDiscountCoupon.aspx?pid=4993
No doubt. I never changed strings until Rocksmith... It makes a huge difference in playability and comfort.
Makes a bigger impact on me since I tend to milk'em for all they got, and then some.

Also did more of a setup on this string change. Cleaned/oiled the fretboard, switched to 10's, from 9's, and lowered the bridge. I've had a couple of days now since the changes and it plays so much faster and easier. Also uncovered a couple extra notches on volume and tone;)

Did my scale runs and quickly jumped up to 11-12mil on all, save for the last two scales. No way I could do that with my LP jr before all this

Now I'm thinking about changing the tuners and nut when I do my next string change

Roche-Thomas Fingerboard oil

Had been reading a bunch about different stuff. And settled on RT because it had good reviews. So at least it wouldn't do much damage:). Besides, I needed something to trigger Free shipping on a order

Pretty happy with the results. Couple of drops go a long way. I'll let others debate if this stuff and its kind are overpriced and no better than mineral oil
EDIT: yeah, like crazedracer mentioned, I just use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the body after use. Don't bother with any sorta liquid. Haven't needed it

Dunlop makes decent stuff. I just tend to use a microfiber cloth to grab the dust. I occasionally spray the cleaning fluid on the guitar and wipe it down. Dunlop has a fretboard cleaner, too - I use that occasionally - not every time I change strings... I think the kit I got a long time ago had carnuba wax and shit, too. That's just overkill. I've never waxed my guitar.

Aw yeah! Goingtoday has Didgeridoos for $25.

Amazon got in on the $60 price for Rocksmith. Just remember that it's suppose to be $50 at Bestbuy, starting Sunday

And Sam Ash has some B-stock Epiphones available. They're about 10% cheaper than the regular models.

Don't know about anyone else, but it's been about 2 months since I ordered the Dean XMT from GC, and they haven't been able to fulfill it yet. I get an email every 2 weeks or so saying it's high priority, and the one a month ago said they expected to ship within 30 days. Well it's 30 days later and I got another one of those :\ I've had other stuff going on so it hasn't been infuriating, but I think it may be time to look elsewhere.

I got the same emails. I called to extend the backorder since they said they need to after the second email. The csr said they're expecting 2 shipments witht he first one in early May. Those have already been set aside for orders and there's not enough. However the second shipment is a few weeks after and is much larger with more than enough to settle all orders. He was confident that our orders will be settled in May, but not sure from which shipment. I thought about canceling but just decided to wait it out since my backlog is tremendous anyhow.
