Is the Wild Arms series any good on PS2? I remember the first one on PS1 was an enjoyable RPG at the time

I own all the PS2 Wild Arms but only played 3 so far and got very angry at it. Left the first town and my 2nd battle just near the beginning was some giant worm that one shot killed me. I was done with ti after that.

Same story, I own all three PS2 games (and Alter Code F), but only played 5. I enjoyed the game a lot, but got stuck at an insane difficulty spike in one of the final dungeons. It's where you have to beat a boss as Rebecca alone, and I just cannot do it. No problems progressing through the game up to that point.

They're okay. I only finished the third one. (Although the searching for towns/dungeons on the world map mechanic was horrible.)

I hated the characters on the 4th and quit it quickly in. I think the 5th got traded back to goozex w/o ever being played.

Anything with Shin Megami Tensami (SMT) in the title is a much better bet for a :ps2: RPG experience.

Well, adios good people of the RPG thread. I'm headed off to the land of Maid Cafe's, Ramen and Fuji san. I'll be in Tokyo for almost a month. If I find anything cool RPG related I'll post it.

Funny with all this Wild Arms talk I'm brining WA4 along on my trip to nibble at during my down time. WA5 is awesome defiantly give it a shot. One of my favorite RPGs in the past several years.

Have fun in the world of Japan my man, and I might go pick up WA4 & WA5 during that B2G2 sale at Gamestop

Be safe man, have fun.

Record of Agarest War Zero popped up in my Quick Picks today.

Anyone play the first one? Does it suck as much as it looks like it probably does?

Enjoy! I've always wanted to go but likely never will. Take a geiger counter with you!

Several hours into Final Fantasy IV complete collection and it's just as amazing as I remember it when I was a kid, though I don't seem to remember the random battles every few steps.

I already pre-ordered Zero.

RoAW doesn't really suck. It is a standard S-RPG though and doesn't really add much or break the mold though.
I'm going to add another good PS2 RPG to the list, Star Ocean: Till The End of Time
:puke: Ugh, what an awful game. I'm sorry, I really tried to like it (I think I slogged through about 8 hrs?) but it was just utter crap imho.

Also, have a fun and safe trip Rod! I'm envious. My roommate and I want to take a trip there this summer, but idk if timing/expenses will work out or not :(

No!! I'm so dissapointed that my computer won't be able to run The Witcher 2 even on minimum. I was even planning to get the Collector's Edition :(

At least it's better than Star Ocean: The Last Hope's English voiceovers

Really hoping for a console port of this. I never played the original but 2 looks awesome!

The original was suppose to be ported to consoles, but got cancelled. Hopefully it's not the same with this one, as judging from the screenshots, looks amazing

PS3 version didnt have that problem
PS3 version didnt have that problem
The PS3 got the "enhanced" version with the Japanese voiceovers, while the 360 version gets the original version that spans 3 discs and only allows the English voiceovers

I would like to play it in Japanese, hence one of my only reasons (besides Final Fantasy Versus XIII) for wanting a PS3

You're remembering it wrong then. ;) It was always random battle heavy.

Yes and Yes.

I recently got Breath of Fire 2 for the Gameboy Advance (Thank you Gamestop sale) but I was wondering how well does this translate from the SNES? Is it a good port or not? If not, I may have to suck it up and buy it on SNES but I hope it's good because I've been wanting to finish this one for some time.

From what I've heard , gameplay wise they streamline things a bit and make things somewhat more user friendly , translation wise it's supposed to be a lot better than the SNES version (you can actually understand people and what your supposed to do now) but still not as good as it could be.

I've had the GBA ports of both BoF games for a while but have yet to get around to playing them. Not a big deal for the first game since I've played and beaten it before , more disappointing for the second since I've played it a bunch of times but never finished it.

Never played any of the Wild Arms games, but they sound intriguing. What should I start out with? Have the old ones aged well? Are they on PSN?

DL'd BoF II on VC and liked it up to the point where I got stuck and quit.

When is this gamestop sale going on? I might pick up some GBA RPGs.

I believe Wild Arms 1 & 2 are on PSN for 5 bucks each

The original Wild ARMs is one of the best JRPGs on the PSX. The only thing about it that's aged are the 3D battle graphics; the sprites and 2D backgrounds everyplace else in the game still look great. It's on PSN and you should definitely check it out.

Wild ARMs 2 is an okay game. The graphics look like Xenogears and the story relies more on typical melodramatic JRPG tropes as opposed to the unique Weird West vibe from the original. It all gives the game a sort of "me-too" feeling.

Has anyone played Legend of Heroes: TitS? It showed up in my Gold Box today and given that I had some credit and am obsessed with PSP games with outer boxes I bit on it. Watching some gameplay videos it looks like something I'd probably enjoy.

Nope. Had it but not even opened it. I'd head over the PSP thread, there is a lot of talk about it there.

Phew. I just realized the one I'd ordered was not the LE. It popped up in my Gold Box and when I went to the product page I didn't see an option for the LE so I assumed that was the only version like some of the other PSP LEs. Turns out it's a different listing entirely, pretty sneaky Amazon. Oh well, not too late to cancel.

I have the TITS LE in my Quick Picks today too. Not sure if I want to get it though.

ETA: Decided to bite after reading a few positive reviews and seeing that it was localized by XSEED (love their stuff!).
:puke: Ugh, what an awful game. I'm sorry, I really tried to like it (I think I slogged through about 8 hrs?) but it was just utter crap imho.
I decided to play it again yesterday.....dear god, I never realized it was that bad. I seriously think the Star Ocean series went down hill after The Second Story
So what do you guys really hate about SO:TtEoT? I got about 12 hours in before I was distracted and I didn't really hate it.
I just got bored with it. I tried to like it. I wanted to like it, I really did. There wasn't any one reason I could put my finger on that I didn't it like it. I just couldn't get interested in it at all. I forced myself to play a little more than half of it before I finally gave up on it.

I found Star Ocean: The Last Hope to be pretty enjoyable, though I got bogged down near the end and never finished it. I keep meaning to go back and replay it on the PS3, but I haven't gotten around to it (story of my gaming life).
I just got bored with it. I tried to like it. I wanted to like it, I really did. There wasn't any one reason I could put my finger on that I didn't it like it.
That sums it up pretty good. Also explains why I never get further then about the 12-15 hour mark in 4 attempts at it.

Yep, same as all of you. It's not bad, it's not good, it's just kind of... there. Very dull and boring and never seems to go anywhere. I started watching a youtube stream when I gave up playing, and even that was so boring I skipped to the end... and am SO glad I didn't waste my time.

Tales of Vesperia, on the other hand, also felt kind of slow at first, but at least the graphics and battle system were good. Now it's getting much better in the story department (though I'm not as big of a fan of the characters as I have been of Symphonia, Abyss, or Legendia's characters) and I'm really starting to enjoy it.
fixed
Hard to argue with the veracity of your edit. Though I've found some enjoyment in some of their more recent efforts, I wouldn't consider anything they've made since the PS1 era to be anywhere approaching "great".
So what do you guys really hate about SO:TtEoT? I got about 12 hours in before I was distracted and I didn't really hate it.
I started is hoping for it to be a sci-fi RPG. The beginning was promising and got my hopes up. Then I end up on some medieval planet. I think maybe this will be quick and we'll be off again. I look up how long I'll be there and saw I'd be there until the end of disc 1. I got annoyed and turned it off to play something better. It's a fairly average RPG, but the sci-fi bit would have kept me interested.
fixed
I enjoyed Valkyrie Profile 2, but I also haven't played one, so that may have something to do with it. Also I haven't played a Star Ocean game beyond the Playstation 2 one, so I can't really judge the rest of the series.

Well let's see what we got

PS1- Star Ocean: The Second Story and Valkyrie Profile

Both super win games

PS2- Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Radiata Stories.

A lot of painfully average

PS3/360 - Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Resonance of Fate

see above

360- Infinite Undiscovery

I had fun with it..but again average

DS-Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

Super hard S-RPG...but again not super

PSP-a bunch of remakes

So yeah..def. downhill after PS1.

Although to their credit none of those games were terrible, so there's something to be said for that. Someone's gotta make the "okay but not great" RPGs, so at least they are filling a niche.

I more or less agree, but I haven't played SO:TLH. Is it really that mediocre compared to 1 and 2?
I more or less agree, but I haven't played SO:TLH. Is it really that mediocre compared to 1 and 2?
Yes. While it's not as terrible a game as some might make it out to be (I quite enjoyed it), it's nowhere near as good as the first two.

I will say that Resonance of Fate is probably the 2nd most disappointed I've been in a game this generation (after FFXIII, though that's not dredge that debate up again, haha). I loved everything I saw about that game and was super psyched to get it until I actually played it and I just couldn't get into it. Interestingly the biggest turn-off for me was the same as with FFXIII, the battle system.
I will say that Resonance of Fate is probably the 2nd most disappointed I've been in a game this generation
Hmm..my biggest disappointment so far is also an RPG (an action one though). The horror known as Alpha Protocol. So much was suppose to be possible in that one, and it delivered on virtually none of it. (and it was buggy as hell)

I found that by the time I actually got around to playing Alpha Protocol my expectations of it had been lowered so drastically that I actually ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I'm sure if I'd kept my pre-order and played it at launch rather than months later after getting it for $10, my perspective probably would have been different.

Even though the gameplay was rough around the edges (and that's being charitable) I thought the story was really well executed and engrossing. There are a lot of concepts in there which would be awesome in a more polished game.

That was it for me. I kept my pre-order and had been anticipating it for a year+. I remember all the promise that KOTORII had and thought "Wow without Lucasarts rushing them what can Obsidian do?"

Well I saw. They can make an average RPG, that did a bunch of stuff but none of it really well. I also felt like even with the choices we had at the end it would have all been close to the same.
