Quick question folks: At what point does The Witcher 2 become "one of the greatest RPGs of all time"??? Maybe it's just been overhyped to me at this point, but I find it fairly dull thus far. Just finished the first chapter or whatever, and am now in an army camp and sill don't find much to be intrigued about. It's not bad, but I'm fairly bored by already.
You're probably at the slowest point in the game. My brother quit playing at the same exact spot.

As for someone who doesn't get into WRPGs I highly enjoyed Witcher 2. But If you've been bored from the start there's not much to say. I really started getting the hang of things midway into Chapter 2 and I started having more fun in combat (I went full on magic route).

I'll have to give it another shot then.  Maybe try going for more of a magic build.  I'm 99% melee, which is quite dull.  Taking a break from it for now.

I think I'm in the same boat with Tales of Xillia as well.

12 hours in. Second or third boss that I defeated with button mashing. (I really can't tell which attacks are more effective or use any sort of strategy)

The game's pretty dull. All I'm doing is venturing from town to town with a high number of random encounters along the way. There's no threat from the "big bad" so I could really care less if this world gets saved.

The level up system offers you the illusion of choice, but all your choices lead to the same path so it doesnt matter which "nodes" you select.

If I didn't have so many other games to play I might keep playing.

If you're not feeling a sense of challenge or the need to strategize, isn't there a way to raise the difficulty anytime? I can't speak in terms of ToX, but raising the difficulty in Tales of Graces F made an enormous impact on how I played. Button mashing was impossible and you really have to learn the battle system and your artes.

I don't want it to be more difficult. I just want the illusion of choice. The idea that my attack selection makes a difference. Or my choice of which node to level up actually matters in the long run.

Or at least something interesting for the characters to do or visit.

I'm about 10 hours into Tales of Symphonia 2, and while it isn't quite as terrible as I expected, it certainly has the worst main character in the Tales of series. The other characters aren't much better. The combat is basic Tales of combat without much to set it apart from other games in the series. The story is kinda weirdly introduced, and if you hadn't played the first ToS game, you'd certainly be lost. The graphics are only marginally better than the first Symphonia, but at least the skits are voiced this time around.

I 'm not sure if it's wise to switch gears now. I didn't touch the melee build (I never do in RPGs) for the same reason as I always find it dull. But the magic build was enjoyable. Once I was able to fire off spells in succession and rely less on melee.

I should have known better than to go pure melee.  I never go pure melee.  Pure magic is usually too squishy, but I always go some hybrid route/class, even if it's only something as simple as Paladin builds haha.

Actually I'm curious about the two new VITA RPGs this week. Mind Zero and Master Reboot.

What are these things, and should I buy them? (Probably won't buy Mind Zero. $28 is too rich.) Master Reboot is only $7 though.

The last boss to Drakengard 3 is one of the most amazing bosses I've ever faced in a game. It's also one of the biggest pains in the ass. Probably the hardest boss I've fought in a game this generation.

I'm excited to play Transistor and FF3 on steam this week. Anyone pick up Drakengard 3?
Transistor looks really cool, definitely want to play through that someday. I picked up Drakengard 3. Fun game, some funny moments mixed in all that brutal and bloody killing, great music.

Agreed. While beautiful story/theme-wise, it was totally cheap, unforgiving, and visual warnings disappear often.

Wait, Master Reboot isn't an RPG.

okay, that card battling thing on the Vita. Starts with an M.

Monster Monopiece.

Transistor was a mixed bag for me. Really liked the art design and music, but it's thin on story, the combat system was kind of meh for me, and pretty short at probably 6ish hours the first run through.

There's replay value if you're into clearing challenge rooms, doing a new game plus play through with different enemies (no substantive changes to story or content otherwise) or trophy hunting. I'm not so it probably wasn't really worth the $20 to me. But oh well, I loved Bastion, and did enjoy this, so I'm fine supporting Supergiant Games.

Monster Monpiece minigame: Oh man fuck you Japan, like seriously, wtf hahahaha.

Transistor:  Man I really want to play this, love me some jazz, but waiting on a sale (or PS+ :D )

Same here. I have so much to play anyways and I don't mind waiting a while to play it.

Still, I respect anyone paying full price to support the devs.

For those who played The Last Story and Pandora's Tower - were either of the two games were playing through? I already played through Xenoblade and these two were games that had caught my interest.

I absolutely hated The Last Story.  Boring as hell, ugly, but pretty decent music IIRC.

Pandora's Tower had some cool concepts, but recycled a LOT of content the second half and never really evolved.  Still an OK game, but I'd only recommend getting it on the cheap/gamefly rental.  It's also not really an RPG imho.  Even "Action-RPG" is a stretch.

Took me some getting used to, but once I did I just sat on the couch super slob style with my arms splayed way out. Once I settled into accessing my different arts and stuff, I don't think I could have gone back to a traditional controller format for the game.

Let me get Panzer to tell you that The Last Story is the worst game ever (or you can just read his review) and let me get Cheddahz to tell you that it's better than Xenoblade.

I thought it was alright. Whatever.

That P4A Ultimax announcement. I know people were playing through the game, and it's a little spoilery, so I won't post it. But yesssssssssssssssss.

I felt the same way when I say it on the Japanese game tread. Me.Want.Now!

Got back on the SMT and started Devil Survivor Overclocked yesterday. It's all right so far. It's also kind of refreshing to play a new (to me) SRPG after what feels like a long time. Not much else to say right now *shrug*

I just got this Sunday :D

Never played anything like this so I'm excited, but won't play for awhile since Mario kart took over

frikken Bravely D man...

I told myself back in April a good way to pace myself with this game is to beat one chapter a month,

now May has came and went and guess how that's gone for me so far?

it hasn't... it hasn't at all... this game is a frikken grind...

no I do not want to travel the whole map fighting six dragons so I can unlock a dungeon to fight yet another boss,

and no I do not want to skip doing this...

I wanted to just stop playing the game altogether, so I went to wikipedia to read story spoilers,

and unfortunately... the story actually seems kinda interesting... like I'd like to see how it actually plays out in the game.

so ugh at Bravely D...

like I said, I refuse to buy any games on my backlog til I beat this game,

and at this rate, Bravely D just might be the game that makes me quit gaming altogether... I'm taking this to the grave!!

I want to play Mario Kart…

And by "anything like this", do you mean SRPGs? If so… *puts on street preacher outfit and holds a stack of Disgaea games* "Have you heard the good news about the Netherworld?"

Lol

The only thing I've played that I'm not sure if it really counts is Final Fantasy Tactics and FF Tactics Advanced. Other than that, no. I've especially never played anything with this kind of storyline/art style before either.

I do have some disgaea games, but they're in my backlog and I haven't gotten to them yet

Story-wise, the setting and basic premise remind me very heavily of The World Ends with You, which is… well, I can't heap enough praise on that game. However, the characterization and some of the finer details feel a bit more suitably MegaTen.

I'm not entirely sure if I like the art style/character designs. For the most part, they're fine, but there's some that I'm not all that fond of.

TWEWY is the dopest (most dope) DS game ever.

I agree with Blue on the design. Those are probably the worst headphones I've ever seen. The three main characters of that game (or the dude and his two friends) look like not good versions of Minato/Makoto, Yukari, and Junpei.

Why is Fire Emblem on the Wii so damn expensive? Is it even worth it?
Wait...how much is it going for? My friend found a copy of Radiant Dawn at his house and gave it to me for free (wasn't his and he didn't want it). Am I sitting on a gold mine???

It gets fantastic towards the end, but get ready for the grind. Unavoidable.

I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying Ys: Celceta considering how similar it is to Ys Seven. It's too bad Falcom only makes (kinda ugly) 3D games, because the 2D art on the Vita screen is
