The official story: "The information below is pure rumor and speculation."--Sony spokesperson.

What we heard: By now, it's pretty much common knowledge what Nintendo's next-gen strategy will be. By the company's own admission, the Revolution will be a cheaper alternative to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Current price estimates for the next-gen console range from $250 to as low as $150.

The Revolution will also be targeted at nongamers, which it will lure in with intuitive gameplay. That will come courtesy of its "magic wand" controller, which will interpret a player's real-world movements into in-game action.

Given that price estimates for the PS3 are going through the roof, it would seem that Sony doesn't have anything to counter Nintendo's novel approach. Not so, says Razoric, which posted an e-mail it received from an employee at Macromedia claiming to have inside knowledge of Sony's counter-Revolution plans.

"Got some PS2 info if you're interested," read the e-mail. "Sony intend to make it their 'Revolution Killer.' They're working on tieing [sic] in Eyetoy and some kind of controller similar to the Revolution controller. With a 100M+ userbase, tens of thousands of mature and documented dev kits and the very low cost of producing Rev style games on the PS2 platform they're expecting to mobilise [sic] another 50M units over the next 5 years precipitated by a $99 price point in 2007."

Though from a less-than-reliable source, the outlined scheme seems like a pretty solid plan. With the new slimline PS2, Sony has both streamlined manufacturing costs and reduced form-factor size, facilitating increased shipping volume. Such measures make a $99 PS2 console feasible, if not profitable, from a hardware-cost standpoint.

Then there's the question of the EyeToy, which has so far only been used for a line of moderately popular party games. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe pioneered the technology behind the motion-sensing device and likely has a prototype of something akin to the Revolution's controller tucked away in its R&D labs. If the Revolution proves popular, such a device might be put on the development fast track--if it hasn't been already. If it ever came to market, it would set up a showdown between the Revolution and the PS2--one that could be tipped by the latter's massive installed base and low development costs.

If you're asking yourself why a Macromedia employee would have knowledge of Sony's next-gen strategy, the grammatically challenged e-mailer has a good explanation. "Sony are [sic] prepping our new mobile 'Flash Lite' platform for PSP and PS3," s/he writes. "They intend to combat Xbox Live Arcade with downloadable flash games to your PS3 and PSP."

Besides adding to the theory that Sony is prepping a PSP with enough built-in memory to download games, the e-mailer's theory makes business sense. "They understand the potential of Flash Lite since the development costs are low and we have a DRM [Digital Rights Management] solution in place so online content delivery is taken care of." Then there's the fact that Sony has repeated time and time again that the PS2 platform will have a 10-year life span. A new, Revolution-style controller would help it draw out those last four years.

Bogus or not bogus?: Totally unsubstantiated? You bet. Completely fascinating? That would be an understatement...

Here's a rumor posted at a gaming news site that says Sony will release the PS2 at $99, possibly bundled with the Eye Toy, to counter Nintendo's Revolution.

Sounds like Sony may be a little worried that the low price point may pay off for Nintendo. I suppose others copying Nintendo's strategy is to be expected if Nintendo pulls it off successfully, but the official word from Sony has always been to scoff at Nintendo.

This is a non-issue IMO. How many AAA titles have been released that utilize the Eye Toy? To the best of my knowledge - zero.

Both consoles will be released with an absolute wealth of games to play thanks to backwards compatibility. I suspect that Nintendo's virtual console will provide games at a price cheaper than buying PS1 and PS2 games.

It'll ultimately come down to consumer tastes. And, if Sony does somehow manage to steal some thunder w/ this move it will most likely only be temporary until potentially positive word-of-mouth gets passed around.

Thanks, Wubb. Sorry about that other thread. I heard about this earlier, and didn't find anything about this at CAG, but didn't have the story link so I decided to post it later. When I came back, I just posted the info without searching again to see if someone else had started a thread in the meantime. Boy, you have to be fast to be first at CAG...

If its true then cool...as long as Sony does it well. I dont see anything wrong wtih Sony extended the PS2's life even further than now. I wouldnt be suprised if the PS2 still has games coming out for it 3 years from now.

pft, and no matter how hard they try, it won't be as good as the Revolution-- Nintendo's online service will be great and there are plenty of 1st party nintendo games that are itching to go online (won't be half-assed like the ps2's), 1st party nintendo games have a lot of pull, the Revolution's controller isn't an add-on and probably has much more R+D invested in it. oh yeah, downloadable nintendo backlog...check and mate. p.s. these kinds of rumors are almost always started to get fanboys riled up...

And... this is not going to eat into PS3s userbase how? 1) How many people who want a PS2 don't have one yet? 2) Who is going to buy a PS2 at the end of the year, and then presumably within 6 months pay another $400 for the PS3? 3) "Hmm... I could spend $100 and get this 5 or 6 year old console, or I could spend twice that or less and get a brand new product..."

Sounds pretty stupid to me. I'm sorry, but a PS2 packed in with an EyeToy isn't going to sell an additional 50 million PS2s.
My guess is that the email is BS, or Sony has some very bad decision makers.

What I find funny is that Gamestop fails to realize that all the "grammar errors" they corrected are actually proper in British English grammar.

That being said, I find the idea to placate the masses who shelled out some egregious sum of money with FLASH GAMES to be stupid. The eyetoy does not sounding too inspiring, either.

I think the last PS1 game was just released 6 months ago. PS2 games will be produced for atleast another 5 years.
Cripes! The disdain for Sony is off the charts on this thread. It's amazing how poor is their image among CAGers.
It's because Sony is exhibiting the same hubris that caused Nintendo's fall from grace.

i love my ps2, but all this could accomplish is pushing a few more systems to the few dumb people who would fall for a gamestop employee saying "well, there is a cheaper alternative to the Revolution..."

nothing of "revolution-killer" proportions.

Don't you mean our beloved Ken-san? I really do love his quote that goes something like "People will want to work more hours to save money in order to buy a PS3."

"The PSP is a work of art, who cares if the button sticks"
"I will destroy Microsoft"
"I do not regard the DS as competition"
"Microsoft should consider working with us to make games"

There's plenty of 'em, and all of them reek of an eventual ass-kicking. Let's not forget their licensing structures and how they treat certain devs.

If anything would make the revolution a success it would be the content it will have. It's not about the controller. People buy systems based on the games that they want. I think most people would play a games on a toaster oven if that's the only way they were available. Nintendo needs more third party support but at least with them they are thinking about GAMES first and everything else last. I can't say the same for M$ and Sony. Their alternate agendas are clear as day. It's funny how Sony is on their 3rd system and their still following on the heels of little old Nintendo. Love them or hate them they must be doing something right.

I think sony needs to leak info on purpose (we call those press releases). Everyone who wants to get a PS3 is sorta scared cause we have no info on the system. If they lets say told us the PS3 would come out on April 1st. People would buy it then go what the hell does it do. Or no one would buy it cause we know nothing about it.

Sony always copies others, what else is new. They're going to be copying Xbox Live next gen too. And the funny thing is all the 12 year old wiggers that love sony will believe that sony came up with the idea of a motion sensitive controller, and persistent online identities. And they'll buy PS3 because they can play that god awful killzone game on it and rappers like it. Too bad. I hate sony too, but working retail makes you realize they have exactly what it takes to market to the average dumb consumer. Nintendo and MS could create the greatest games, systems, and everything else, and sony will just copy it and say its their own.

make fun, its the truth. Working at any video game retailer will teach you that. The lowest common denominator wins, regardless of quality.

Well, I just hope Sony eventually ponies up the money to improve their hardware. Sony systems (heck, Sony consumer electronics in general) always seem less reliable.

which is such a shame. I used to buy exclusively Sony stuff because they were quality. Now? I tend to shy away...
You do know that that last quote wasn't made by Ken, right? Or did you just assume he said it?
Oh, I remember a post somewhere that attrributed it to him. Still, having 75% of those quotes isn't a good thing.

Its just called Greed, and also maybe a way of counter acting whatever loss they(Sony) intially have with the PS3. I don't think a rumored PS2 eye version or whatever would cannabilize ps3 sales, really who would say "I was going to buy a ps3 but I will buy that ps2 rehash instead". But kids whose big brother gets a ps3 would want somthing and they would love a jumping moving type eye toy system, that their parents get them when they might only have gotten their brothers old ps2. So it might just but an every so slight dent in Revolution Sales but not a real overall noticable amount. This is market expansion only I think.
