Taking aim at Microsoft's Internet Explorer and its 78% market share, Apple announced Monday that it has launched a version of its Safari web browser that will run on Windows PCs.

In an appearance at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs boasted, "What we've got here is the most innovative browser in the world and the most powerful browser in the world."

Jobs said it runs twice as fast as Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox, which has a 15% market share. He added that Safari currently has a 5% worldwide market share, which translates to more than 18 million users. A public beta version is available now from Apple's web site.

Jobs also told developers that the Apple iPhone, now 18 days away from launch, will run third-party applications using Web 2.0 standards. That's a departure for Apple, which has been reluctant to make similar moves in the past.

Most of the keynote was devoted to a rundown of 10 key new features in Apple's upcoming Mac operating system known as "Leopard." Among them are a new way to organize information and the ability to automatically backup the computer's hard drive. Leopard will be in stores in October at a price of $129. "We are already ahead of the competition," said Jobs. "Leopard sets the bar even higher."

Jobs also announced that Electronic Arts will be making games to run on the Mac. Titles include "Harry Potter," "Madden '08," and "Tiger Woods '08."

I'm not a huge fan of Safari myself but if it really runs twice as fast as IE and FF I might give it a shot. Interesting that Apple stock was down on the news today, LOL. Also interesting was the news that 3rd party apps would run on the iPhone.

It seems decent, though not as good as on OSX.

The lack of its support for my mouse's extra buttons (used for Back and Forward) kind of sucks so I have to go up and hit the actual back buttons.

Also, no ALT + S, which is outrageous. ;)

On the plus side, it's definitely much nicer looking than IE7 or FF2, and takes up less RAM than Firefox, no doubt.\0 So far there's no memory leaks, so it's already better than Firefox in terms of resource use.

Finally, for me it's definitely faster than both IE7 and Firefox, so that's also a plus. Just wish I could block ads with this thing (eg. the big annoying flash banner at the top of every single fucking CAG page).
anyone know if there is a way to import my bookmarks?
There's an Import Bookmarks feature under File, but I'm not sure how it works.

I found the folder that has all them, but I cna't find a way to transfer them to the bookmarks tab.

I DLed it after it was announced but have yet to install it. Ive heard this 'beta' really feels like a 'beta' so I may wait on it.
The download says Safari+Quicktime, so be wary.
There's an option to dl without QT as well.

Yea, saw that ;)

I'm using IE 7 right now (most stable with Vista, Firefox is too huge of a memory leak to ever get me to go back anyways), and I don't like Safari one bit.

The font is blurry, for some reason, and the lowest "font smoothing" option is only light.

I'm not really that impressed, plus the extra buttons on my mouse don't work, as was mentioned before.

meh, I always thought Safari was too fruity. Even on my iBook I use Firefox.

But I'm still glad more browsers are slowly but surely ganging up on IE.

It's good for the parents who you know aren't going to install extensions. it's a good browser but not for everyone. I currently use Camino on my mac and I probably won't switch to Safari 3.

Installed this afternoon. Was REALLY plain (both visually and options-wise). Went to CAG & it froze solid. Uninstalled. ;)

I'm a Firefox guy. The memory leak isn't a big enough issue to make me go back to IE; I'm too fond of Firefox's plug-ins/etc.

No thanks...

I'm not a big fan of Safari on OSX and I can only imagine how much it'll suck on a Windows Machine (if iTunes is an indication).

I installed it. Went to Google. Seemed kinda slow. I went to Gmail. Seemed kinda slow. Cleared all the favorites, added Gmail to favorites, then clicked the Amazon link on the browser... it loaded the first half of the page and then froze. I had to manually end the non-responsive process.

I'll stick with Firefox for now.

Guys this is a great opportunity to see how Apple's programs are coded so they actually run about 20% SLOWER then pc ones. Weird hunh? Don't believe me... spend 3000 on a mac pro and compare it to a 2000$ pc with a 8800 GTX in it.

Safari is garbage on OSX. I used Opera. There's now way I'd use it when there's evern more superior choices on the PC.

I wasn't able to touch Safari on a Mac so there's no way in hell I'll be touching it on the PC. I'm liking Avant (Primary) and Firefox (Secondary) as my web browsers.

I would recommend trying Avant over IE with Vista since you have problems with Firefox. I've encountered no problems yet in Vista 64bit with it (or not noticed any at least) and it is pretty much just a modified, more secure, version of IE. Though it does take a little bit of initial customizing in order to make it look less horrid when you first open it up with all those damned buttons.

EDIT: Now that I'm home I looked at Avant memory usage and there may very well be a slight memory leak in it too. Though I've been using it for years and havn't had a single problem since nor have I had a problem since I installed Vista either. I've left Avant open for days on end sometimes and never came back to a problem.

You do realize the Avant is just a new interface that sits on top of IE, right?

Anyway to the topic of the thread, safari was crap on my macbook, but I figured I would give this a try since it could just be my dislike for the craptastic interface of OSX, but after installing it Safari just crashes every time I open it. Add in the rediculous amount of security holes, this one is not a keeper.

Which is pretty much what I said. Unless I wasn't picky enough with my wording by saying stuff like "modified IE" instead of "modifies IE" and such. I guess I'll have to go all out in caps and brackets next time I mention the word Avant in any forum again. :p

Seriously though, every time I mention Avant though someone always has to go out of their way and point out that it's basically a mod for IE. Do you hate IE to the point where you're never once going to touch any part of it again or something? I mean I can understand the security aspect of it and such but responses tend to sound like it's just as insecure as IE. It's piqued my interest since I get quoted basically the same thing every time I mention Avant no matter how I try to say that it just modifies IE.

I'm not trying to sound like I'm lashing back or anything. It's just the way I type. :p

Safari is nice, and as a web developer, this is great news. It won't be replacing Firefox, but it's installed so I can test websites across all browsers.

No, I like IE actually. I didn't see you mention it, so I wasn't sure if you knew or not. It might explain why it uses more memory.

If I wanted to use Safari I'd buy a Mac. Firefox couldn't be better, IMO.

Ok, I just d/led it, and got an error upon installation. Great coding, Apple.

Yeah safari- pc perfect way to see how fucking slow it is. Uninstalled within 10 seconds of SLOW SLOW SLOW browsing.
