Alright, I want to blow $1K on something foolish, but don't have lot's of expendable income. After savings, rent, various debts and bills my left over income is minimal. So gotta find other ways to do it.

Things that aren't options...

sellings video games (or dvds etc) - ive already sold the vast majority of my collection.

stupid things like a "car wash" - my brother actually suggested this, but if i was going to throw away weekends id rather try and get a 2nd job (see below)

borrowing from friends or family - i HATE that. even if someone were to offer it, i wouldnt want to do it. just makes things screwy.

being a man whore - its inevitable that someone would post this, so lets just be clear off the bat.

Some ideas...

2nd job - not desireable, i already work 10 hour days and very much enjoy my weekend. plus i dont really want to flip burgers or work retail ever again.

ebay - id like to think i have an eye for things, i already frequent thrift stores, why not try. the downside here is spending money to make money, and like i said, im on a budget already.

odd jobs - i could post flyers around my apartment or job or something offering various computer services. ive done plenty of computer building and repairs for friends and family before. but, itd be a shot in the dark, could get some jobs, but who knows how many i could get, if any at all.

alright CAG. lets hear your ideas, or if you think something i suggest is a good idea, give me some tips or encouragement. id need to get the $1K as quickly as possible, with a deadline of approximately june 1.

Maybe you shouldn't in that case?
Maybe you shouldn't in that case?
money is tight, but im not dirt poor. i have a 401k, put money into savings and have "spending" money every week. i could easily get a thousand by not putting money in savings a few paychecks, but id rather keep things the way they are.
I vote Pixie Sticks.
while im sure $1k in pixie sticks would be interesting, theres already a purpose for the $1k.

...then take the $1K out of savings, spend it, and continue to put it back each paycheck. If you're going to be impulsive and spend $1K on something ridiculous, you might as well do it right.

is it a hooker?

seriously though. if you have debt and not alot of disposable income, i wouldn't recommend spending 1k on something "foolish", put it towards debt

also, tax return?

its not like its dire straights or anything. i have a budget. im not struggling with debt, student loans come out with EFT every month and i have enough money to put into savings and support my alcoholism. just trying to get money outside of the budget.

and yes, a hooker. im going to have her snort pixie sticks off my body.

No, I meant maybe you shouldn't be blowing 1K on something foolish when things are tight...hell blowing 1K on something foolish is a bad idea when things are going good.

If you are serious, quit drinking/going out/eating out. Limit yourself to the really cheap meals and make it all yourself. Also no sodas/coffee, only water. You'll be living like shit for awhile but you should be able to save a good deal of cash.

well, my wife and I are really trying to get out of debt right now, and I'm big on Dave Ramsey, so I still think that even if you are doing well, it's a better idea to attack the debt, especially if what you want to buy is by your own admission "foolish"

but to each his own. I already asked, but think you missed it...I assume you have already spent/planned out your tax return? so that's not an option?

thats a last resort option. after all, im not putting away money for nothing. but id be willing to do it if it came down to that. if nothing else id at least like to reduce the amount id pull out of savings.

meant to reply to this. i surprisingly had to pay this year. $3 dollars, no joke. i actually did them 3 times 3 different ways, each time, $3 dollars. wasnt too happy about that.

Blow 1k on a trip to meet Hard Gay.

want money, don't want to work for it...

okay serious suggestion: if you're any good at poker, i've known people throughout my life who have achieved varying levels of success at playing online poker, due to the sheer amounts of idiots online who think they're up to snuff. just be sure that you're not one of the chumps.

1. Sell some stuff you don't need.

2. Cut back expenses in other areas if you can. Eat out less, ditch cable etc.

Option 3--since you don't seem to want to work or make big sacrifices....

Depending one what you're wanting to buy, looking for a 2-3 year no interest with store credit card deal is a good option--as long as you're sure you'll pay it off before hand so you don't get socked with 2-3 years of accrued interest.

Do you need $1k fast or $1k period. If you need it fast and don't want to work for it, get people to lend you money, hopefully you're a likable person. Don't bother telling them what you actually need it for because it doesn't sound like it'd be a good reason, better to make something up. Hit up family and friends, but assure them you'll pay them back and the only reason you need it is for your made up emergency. You'll burn a lot of bridges if you don't pay it back. It'll be easier if you have a big family or lots of friends because you can ask for less from each, so it'll be easier to manage. Work out how long it'll take you to pay each person back, friends first, family is slightly more forgiving and give up your vices, no smoking... anything, no alcohol, no gambling, ...no hookers, no entertainment and understand that depending on how much you owe each person, its unwise to flaunt newly bought items or talk about spending money unwisely around those people prior to paying them back. You may also be required to leave things as collateral temporarily. I've had people take advantage of me before, it sucks, don't get caught.

If you need $1K period that is a little bit tougher... you're gonna be on your own on that one, all my ideas are super evil, not necessarily illegal, but you won't be liked very much if you get caught.

What excactly is this 'foolish' thing you intend to buy, anyway? Honestly, I think we need that to offer perspective... maybe someone knows how to get whatever-it-is for less. Maybe someone else has bought it and can tell you it's not worth it.

Without knowing anything else about it, I'd say if you know it's foolish, and you aren't willing to make cutbacks elsewhere, you probably shouldn't buy it. That's a lot of money to drop without being really serious about getting the item in question- especially in such a short period of time.

Run a 50/50 raffle. Sell 2,000 tickets at $1 each for the chance of winning $1,000. Or maybe put up some really good new game for "auction" and sell $1 tickets for the chance to win it.

P.S. This is probably illegal but I doubt anyone would care.

You can make a little bit by selling plasma. It isn't $1000 but it can add up.

This strong, steady demand simply can't be met by unpaid volunteers. Ten million of the 12 million liters we pump out annually is from paid donors, many of them regulars pocketing $200-plus a month.

"It's easy," said Ryan Elkins, a 26-year-old disabled Iraq war veteran who makes $55 a week for three hours of "sitting still." It's boring, he said, and he'd rather be back on explosives duty. But it helps buy the groceries for his family as he begins taxidermy school in Spokane, Wash.

Go to a McDonalds, Burger King, whatever on a highway rest stop. Bum money here and there and use the fact that you ran out of gas as an excuse.

What do you want to blow 1000 on? TV? Vacation? Do you really have to get it now? Like others have said, just cut down on going out, eating out and buying games/toys. How about saving 5 bucks here and there and putting it into shoebox. It might take a couple of months but you will save the 1000 and view it differently than the money in your bank.

Cut back on spending, sell some junk, and then save that money until it's enough. How much expendable income do you have each month? I imagine you could save it in a few months easy.

If you have plenty in an easily accessible savings (like $10k at least I'd say) then you could take it out now and then replace it over a few months, but that's a little more dangerous as you'd have to stick with it or you'll just be out $1k in savings.

Move to CA, register as a medical marijuana grower and make fucking bank.

If I had the balls to do it, I would.
Damn that is specific.
Indeed.

But at least we know the pay in case of hard times. Pun intended.

I haven't tried any of this, but seems to me there's a shot of it working:

Submit a winning tshirt design to shirt.woot.com (you don't even have to know how to draw, just start with a corny pun and kawaii it up)

Come up with a website idea like the Million Dollar homepage. Then front it with a kid relative to build media momentum.

Create an app for the IPhone. Actually create two apps - make one controversial so that when it gets pulled you can complain to blogs and forums, getting your name out there. Then you can use that to sell the other.

Buy HDMI cables in bulk off Monoprice and sell them to acquaintances for double the markup. If they're used to Best Buy prices they'll think it's a deal.
Ok i guess i'm the only one curious enough to ask, what is the $1000 going to be spent on?
well a couple people asked. itd be spent on a little vacation with a couple of my brothers.

at this point it looks like the best idea CAGs have is cut back on spending. and thats probably want im going to have to do, just cut back, maybe pull the money out of savings if i have to. im going to scour the house this weekend and try to find random things i can sell on ebay or CL.

Well it's probably the best thing to do, unless you have a reasonably easy job lined up that you'd like to do that they'll pay you good money for.

Let me know if you find anything good, I might go for some good stuff sold cheap for want of quick money :p.

Stop drinking... put every dollar you would have spent on drinks into a jar and by the end of the week you'll have $1000.
Become a sperm donor.
Yea, it's that simple... you'd have a better chance winning some money from the lottery.

if i do find CAG worthy stuff ill be sure to post it. but i might find weird stuff like in the storage unit and dont want to post a lamp or something like that.
Stop drinking...
now thats just crazy talk

Well since man whore is out, I'd actually say doing CPU work is a good idea. If you have an apartment building with a tackboard, offer to clean up viruses from their computers. So while they've been looking for hookers snorting pixie sticks online, chances are good they got some malware/spyware. Depending on economic well-being of the neighborhood, you could try and charge $50 to $100 a hit or something to that effect.

You kidding, Some of us may want a lamp.. you never know.. Lamps are useful.
Cash out your accumulated PTO at work. I did that before and got 80 hours out of the 120 hours I had.
thats an interesting idea. ill have to check with HR and see if that would be an option, i dont have a 120 hours worth, and would need some for the aforementioned vacation. but its worth looking into, every bit helps.
Personally, I love lamp.
yeah, but they are a pain to ship

Well - since this thread has turned into lamp-fest:

me and my wife just bought a couple vintage lamps off ebay a while ago - we drove two hours round trip to pick them up. Yay for lamps!
