Hilary Rodham Clinton, D, NY, has taken sides. In an article with the Sunday Times, the first-time senator and two-term first lady, said she wants to launch a $90 million investigation into the effects of videogames on children.

Her efforts mirror long-time Senator Joseph Lieberman D, Ct, though this time she has sided with right wing Republicans Sam Brownback and Rick Santorum.

She cites Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto as as a "major threat" to morality in America.

"Children are playing a game that encourages them to have sex with prostitutes and then murder them," Clinton said in a statement. "This is a silent epidemic of media desensitisation that teaches kids it's OK to diss people because they are a woman, they're a different colour or they're from a different place."

Apparenly Clinton is new to the subect of violence in videogames, which first erupted over the finshing moves in Mortal Kombat. Having sex with a prostitute and then running said woman over in GTA is not a goal or mission in the game, leaving that option open to the morality and choice of the gamer. Furthermore, GTA3, which kick-started this new wave of complaints against violence in videogames, came out in 2001, almost four years ago. Clinton's statement appears to be the first part of her bid for the democratic presidential election in 2008.

Clinton's proposed $90 million investigation will study the impact of games and other electronic media on the "cognitive, social, emotional and physical development" of children, reports the Sunday Times.

What are your thoughts? Is she right, wrong, an idiot, or doing something good for the future of this issue? Does she join Sen. Lieberman on gamers' hate lists?

Stupid. I hate people that try to blame the flaws in little kids on television or video games. Plus it's not like parents can't stop their kids from buying these games. It's not the companies' faults. Even if they do play them, parents should be able to talk to their kids and say this is all fake, and if you ever try something like that I'll kill you. ;) JK But parents should be able to discipline/teach their kids in a proper manner so they don't try to emulate games like GTA.

As long as she doesn't propose censoring the games I'm fine with it. She is right, children shouldn't be playing games such as those, but I believe it is first and foremost the job of the parents and secondly the job of the retailers to prevent the children from getting the games.

The U.S. promised 250 million for the tsunami relief effort...and now they're gonna spend over a third of that number on this bullshit? This is what disgusts me about the two party system.

I might be able to side with her if the investigation was looking to expose the inadequate control system of GTA games, but I'm utterly pro gratuitous violence.

These phrases stuck out the most in that article:

"Clinton's statement appears to be the first part of her bid for the democratic presidential election in 2008."

"Her efforts mirror long-time Senator Joseph Lieberman D, CT, though this time she has sided with right wing Republicans Sam Brownback and Rick Santorum."

Looks like she's going to try to do what Gore or Kerry couldn't do, try to bring a lot of those that would vote Republican for a president in turn vote for her, because she now has "values." From a political sciencist point of view its a good tatic, start this off early and hope for good returns. Also what better is there to get national attention by coming out and saying a blanket statement that most parents fell strongly about?

I believe young children should not be playing these games, but the 90 million is a waste of our tax money..their is already a rating system that is approved by Congress. They need to enforce the law, and increase the fines on stores. No ID should mean if you are under the age requirement for a particular game, you shouldn't get it. Yes parents are part to blame, but they can't be involved in their childrens life 24/7, but they should take some of the burben of blame. I feel it is the retail stores fault. The games are marked with a rating, just don't sell them to minors, and it will not be an issue

Utter tripe. Reason? CNN still has an ongoing presence of 24hr coverage of worldwide events. Of those worldwide events, Iraq is still fairly predominant. Why? Cause there's fightin' goin' over there. Now that the obvious is out of the way, what's the point? 24hr coverage of violence and/or pain & suffering. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the modern human race has existed for at least 2000 years. How old are video games and TV? About 70 or so years. Now many atrocities have been committed over the last 2000 years (more I'm sure beyond recorded history) such as the Roman Expansion during Jesus' time, the Spanish Inquistion, the Crusades, human sacrifice from the Druid, Aztec, and Egyptian cultures, and so on and so forth. With all those atrocities, can anyone honestly say that TV or video games influenced those ppl into committing those acts? Well, they're all adults, we're talkin' about the kids here. So? Is it highly unbelievable that in the 2000 yrs of written history there wasn't a couple of bad eggs throughout that time? Please. If you want modern examples, fine. Afghanistan - muhadejin parents teach their kids how to handle a rocket launcher in order to shoot down American helicopters. Kids in Somalia using AK-47s. Vietcong children taught how to plant mines to stop the spread of American capitalism. I'm fairly sure that those places didn't have much access to TV let alone video games yet they were able to commit those acts. I highly doubt that video games carries that much influence. If anything it's a small factor in the number of things kids are exposed to now: domestic violence, parental issues, etc. Rather, I think the problem is that a lot of parents are so self involved in their own naval gazing that they don't have time to pay attention to their kids which in itself is a pity. It's time for those parents to step up and actually do their job: be a parent. Isn't that the purpose of having kids? So you can teach them to grow up to be well adjusted adults? But no they don't. They want the easy mark. Someone else to blame. It couldn't be their own fault right? I mean they cloth, feed, and house them already. They don't need to actually talk to them let alone *gasp* discipline them. Oh noooooos, whatever will they do? Please, Hilary, is it any surprise that Bill wanted to do some ugly ass intern named Monica?

:Contented sigh:

These threads always draw the most educated and enlightened replies.

Thank you OP!

(My $.02, :pause: I don't care)

EDIT: That may seem like threadcrapping, allow me to clarify.

First, the "article" was downright hostile towards Hillary. It didn't even have the illusion of un-biased reporting. Thus, I disregard everything it says. I'll wait for confirmation on the 90 million taxpayer dollars figure before getting outraged.

Second, everybody don't panic! You'll still be able to play GTA. Anything like this is just playing to the crowd, nothing came of the fights against angry music in the 80's.

Third, anybody who doesn't see this stance as an obvious political play is an idiot. No need to get outraged, it's what demagogues do. Try to stir up the rabble.
I keep seeing "democratic presidential hopeful". She's denied this on numerous occasions, it's not happening people.
Yeah.

By the way, want to buy a bridge?

Clinton said in a statement. "This is a silent epidemic of media desensitisation that teaches kids it's OK to diss people because they are a woman, they're a different colour or they're from a different place."

Please tell me Hilary didn't actually say "diss".

I dont think little kids should play Grand Theft Auto. I also think Grand Theft Auto should not be banned or censored either.

I totally agree with Hillary. After all, we ALL know that video games are totally real and distort people's minds. In fact, my lawsuit is still pending against my XBox for making me a champion skateboarder, and Eidos hasn't paid me a dime despite Tomb Raider growing me a vagina.

Look, if your kid is dumb enough to believe that a video game is real, that kid's broken. Sorry. Now, maybe I'm being too generous in giving the average person the benefit of the doubt that he or she can tell the difference between Doom and math class, but we really can't base all of our products and entertainment around our nation's most incredible dumbasses. If we did, we would have outlawed Kool-Aid years ago when 3rd-grader Danny "Dipshit" Phillips tried to snort it up his nose and nearly killed himself.

Hillary Clinton, tell you what, if some bastard kid kills me one day, I don't want you stealing money from the people who made his damned Playstation. Instead, spend your time zapping the prick on the electric chair. Or wait for him to kill his own stupid ass trying to get on JackAss.

"Suggestive content found under E rated videogames!

Super Mario Sunshine - Hurt animals, enviornment waste

Sly Cooper - Hurt animals, violence

SSX 3 - Dangerous stunts, violence, comic mischief that will give your children a bad attitude (its been proven by the MAVV), online play.

Need for Speed Underground - Dangerous activities, illegal activities, violence, suggestive themes, suggestive language, online play."

man they can find anything to bitch about

This is not a law, nor should it be.

It's up to the parents to censor what there children play. It would help if video game retailers actually enforce the ratings system too. This is just about as bad as the government getting involved in Baseball. Nobody gives a shit. How about getting involved in stopping the war and reducing the national deficit among other problems within this country? There is just WAY too much time and money spent on things that don't add up to a whole lot in the long run.

Ughh...another case of american democracy blaming societies problems, on something that doesnt have any affect, give the $90 million to me, and ill tell her what those studies are going to show her, lay off tightass

"Clinton's proposed $90 million investigation will study the impact of games and other electronic media on the "cognitive, social, emotional and physical development" of children, reports the Sunday Times. "

The funny thing here is that if this study happens it could actually help prove that video games have a positive effect on, at least, cognitive development and possibly social and physical (DDR anyone?). If you haven't read "What Video Games have to teach us about Learning and Literacy" I highly recommend it. The guy who wrote it, James Gee, lays out a bunch of learning principals that video games teach kids. Maybe if someone with a little intelligence and power in the video game industry came out and said that yes video games like GTA can have negative effect on children, but that's why there is a rating system. But conversely games like Pikmin, Mario, Sly Cooper, Tetris, and a whole host of other "E" rated games teach kids skills like problem solving and help introduce them to ideas like semiotic domains which can help their accomodation/assimilation skills among others, then maybe this whole idea can be put to rest and politicians can stop making hay out of and maybe have to find actual important issues to campaign with.

The only problem with "morality" is that some parents are too consumed with work to give a damn about what their kids do. When kids from her time were playing cops and robbers, they were pretending to shoot each other with guns in realtime, not on a screen. Of course then, divorce wasn't above 50%, single parents were less common, and both father and mother weren't working.

Something else to blame for parental inadequacies. Games or media can be as violent as it can be but if there is a good parent/guardian out there, they will be able to go and teach the kid what is wrong/right about said game/media or steer them away from it if they so choose. But blaming VGs and media for the violence that kids do is something that needs to be checked (asshats in politics). Ppl in this country are quick to blame something/someone for any of their problems. It seems easier then dealing with the problem itself that is why this is rampant.

I'd rather find out whether people are using Charmin toilet paper or some off brand. It'd cost less than half that amount and I'd sure be more willing to read the results. I mean, I understand she's just making herself look good but it's such a played out cliche. The big brain behind GTA has already said that if studies show that GTA is actually affecting people in this way and is actually forcing kids to pull the trigger or act violently, that he would stop making GTA. Funny, though, that after all the studies I've seen on this topic after GTA III they seem to have produced two more.
Yawn, yet another lame politician slamming a video game. What else is new? Anyone else remember this site from last year? Some very intelligent people with great grammar wrote it. Check it out.

I figure you guys should know, I'm starting my own group call RPASC. It stands for Random People Against Sex on the Couch. We are a people completely against having sex on the couch because it may start on the couch and eventually lead up to irrationally ludicrous places such as sex on the roof or in your local mall's fountain, so we're really doing you a favor. For the ridiculously low price of $2, we'll send you a piece of paper that tells you how much of a sucker you are and you can rest knowing that your two dollars went towards the purchase of my next blunt and that no one gives a damn what you think.

P.S.: We can spell ensure. See? E-n-s-u-r-e. Isn't that reason enough to send us random amounts of cash?

About super mario sunshine, that is such shaq fuin bullshit, i mean cmon, hillary deserves to be beat, i hate those politicians who talk about certain reforms, just to appeal to a certain group, remember everything hillary does, is for her Presidential Candidacy, and as a Citizen of the state of new York, she does nothing, so please dont give her the vote

dum bitch just wants attention....doesnt she understand that if there is ever a female presindent america will implode...

"Warning to parents: Its been proven that playing MMORPGs lower kids IQ and make them act differently. In fact, any online game does that. Dont let your children get hold of any MMORPG."

how the fuck did they prove it...seriously were do they keep this proof

I believe that Online games, do not cause anything, its just they are a easy form of socialization, like hanging out with your friends only with convience, moms who yell at their kids for being online all day, would they yell at there kid for hanging out at the mall all day, besides which costs more, i dont think they should be complaining

very very true...some parents are stupid and dont want there kids to have friends i guess...plus you learn a fuckload more online for some reason when i talk to my friends online they are more interesting/informed then when we hang out

Well man.. I think they should make it illegal for parents to buy the game when they're with their kid. Like how you buy beer, if you are 21 or older, thats okay, but if you have buddies next to you that are under 21, they wont sell you the beer.

Concept should apply to parents. So then that mean the parent is in full responsibility to buy the game for their kid. And video game stores would then tell and warn their parents if they have kids, should not give it to them with lot of violence. If the kid is next to mother at video store, then many reasons why parents give the game to thier kid is because thier kid is crying in front of them.
