Should I get this TV? (Now with price!!! $260!!!)

With components you WOULD see a difference,... on a better set. Although,... they will provide a much cleaner signal,... it's just nominal on that set.

Also,... no, up close should look as great as from far away. I've seen that set with Finding Nemo playing from components, off of a decent ProScan DVD player,... and it is one reason I objected to your decision.

If you can get into the service menu,... you could touch it up a bit,...BUT, you may end up screwing something up. Just go online, and read up on how to calibrate that particular set. Make sure you right down any factory defaults before diving in. This would be the equivalent to modding a PC.

Seriously,.... don't waste your money on high-def components and cables until you can get the set looking good with a standard DVD. Then,... try out some component cables, and pray that they make a difference. They might,... but I highly doubt it.

With that set,... stay away from HD broadcasts, as you won't get to see whta you'd be paying for. Unless you just want to say that you have the service,... but you don't sound like that kind of guy.

I didn't mean to sound like a hardass,... I just dislike seeing people get screwed when they have other options.
Except my mom's new husband. He's loaded, so he thinks the more he pays, the better the set. Well,... he payed $6,000 for a REALLY crappy JVC. Bottom of the barrel sound system, and to add insult to injury,... he pays for HD broadcasts. I laugh every time I see him watching a HD football game,... as it looks like an MPEG movie.

Nothing like artifacts, and digital interference during the most intense moment of the game. Not to mention the horrid blur. LOL!!!!!!

Well, congratulations on your purchase. If you are content, that is all that matters. Just remember,... you didn't ask if the set was good,... you asked if it was good for the price. When it comes to happiness,.... there should be no price. Remember that, and all of your life, regret will evade you.

Also,... to you fine fellows with beef,....720p is not HD. Please find me an article which states so, so I may enjoy a good comedy.
:)

Another thing,.... M$ is making it mandatory for their games to be in 720p minimum. Just like they made surround sound mandatory last stage in the game. Do your homework, please. To think that $ony would push out anything less than 720p standard is ridiculous. Why do you think their tech demos look so good????? I can tell you it's not because its being shown in 480p. Although they may be using workstations/dev kits,.... this time around, $ony isn't b/s'ing. These are actual in game graphics, being shown in 720p and higher. They will not downgrade this gen, for now they have a stiff competition,... and a remarkable new technology,... along with only the best licensed engines. HL3, Unreal3, and many others.

Have fun.
:)
Any links on where I can get an HD pack? Do you know if most Wal-Marts sell them?
Yes WM sells them.Just make sure you get the HD pack with component cables and not the other set with s video. You can get a used set from EB for like $10.
hey raw, first boot up your xbox without a game in it, goto the settings and change the xbox to a widescreen format, thatll fix the short and fat players.

also, try buying component cables. they split the signal from 1 (on standard AV Cable) to 3 different wires...red green and blue, thus making sharper and more detailed colors from less signal loss.
Great, thanks for the tip. I did that and the game looks fine in normal mode, only thing is that the tv cuts off about 8cm on the left and right sides of the screen. It is all black like a letterbox but vertical.

When I go into full screen mode, it goes back to looking short and fat again. Do most of you play your games in normal mode or full screen?

$10 Component cable to go w/ the $260 HDTV sounds reasonable and should hold you up until you learn more about HDTV. Don't worry about complicated stuff like the videophiles would. Your first HDTV will always be your learning experience, so walk before you run. Enjoy the $260 HDTV, it was a great deal and a good decision. Heck I paid $250 + tax for my Sony 27" Wega flat tube a week ago, and it isnt even HDTV or widescreen.

Awesome thanks, I will have to pick one of those up.

Another question for you guys, what does all of that 480i, 480p, 720i, and 1080p stuff mean? Which of these will my tv support? On the Wal-Mart description it says 1080p, does that mean everything under that including the 720i, 480p, and 480i?

drone, i don't know what ur deal is, but we got these tv's for steals. they're good tv's, great tv's for the price. find a better tv for the price and i'll be surprised. btw this is jericho's friend who jipped our manager down to $260.

Thats rediculous. I have a crappy Philips 30" HDTV and an HDTV adapter on my 20" monitor, and the difference between HDTV (yes, 720p and 1080i ARE in fact HDTV) is night and day.
Also,... to you fine fellows with beef,....720p is not HD. Please find me an article which states so, so I may enjoy a good comedy.
Sorry, but 720p and 1080i are HDTV. They're the only HD signals you can watch at all today. I'd like to know where you're getting 1080p content to compare that to, because there are exactly zero 1080p broadcasts, zero 1080p game consoles, and zero 1080p sources of any kind in the consumer market.

This isn't a 480p EDTV. Why you keep making these rediculous statements, like how 720p and 1080i aren't HD, and how you keep comparing this $260 TV to a $6000 1080p display, is beyond me.

I'm sorry if your parents are loaded, and money is no object for you, so you have to degrade everyone elses budget purchases as being inferior. Not all of us have millions of dollars, luxury cars, yachts, and a Latino maid named Esperanza who will "clean the pipes" for a few extra Pesos. What you're doing is calling his Honda Civic a waste of money, because its not a Rolls Royce. I'm sorry, but we can't all drive a Rolls Royce. Some of us have to work, pay bills, and only have a limited budget for luxury items such as a TV. If your budget is only $600, which for some people is a month's rent, then you can't do better than this deal. Plus, you have $340 left over to buy food that isn't Top Ramen, or maybe you could pay the gas bill that month so you can cook your ramen and not take cold showers.

For $260, $460, or $660, this is probably the best TV you can get. For $2600 or $4600, certainly not. I'm not trying to compare this thing to a 60" Grand Wega.

:D

:D

The verb to pwn (past tense: pwned, pwnd, pwn'd, pwnt, pooned) as used by the Internet gaming subculture, means to beat or dominate an opponent. While it probably originated as a typographical error, or typo, of the word own, it is now used intentionally by many members of the subculture. The term has become so ubiquitous in Internet circles that it is often used outside of gaming contexts. Thus, gamers also recall it and label it as their own word known as "Powned."; for example, "He just got pwned in that debate" or "The hunters pwned that bear."

i was gonna say the same thing but in different words, dafoomie. it sounds like drone is a rich ass who leeches off daddy's money.

btw on my phillips 30" widescreen HDTV (the one i got with rawisjericho's sanyo)i just watched a dvd and the picture is badass, plus i just played ncaa 2005 and my picture is amazing, and i don't even have component cables or monster cables. no complaints here.

I agree, I got a few chuckles out of it as well :)

I'm really not trying to be mean here... Yes, there are better TV's for 4 to 6 times the price. But the point of the exercise is to spend as little money as possible and get as much value as you can. Of course a Honda isn't as nice as a Rolls, but it gets the job done.

yeah the whole point of a car is to get you from point A to point B. My Phillips does that just fine for me so far. I still haven't laid the pedal to the metal.
So which HD pack cables are better? The M$ or Madcats?
All Madcats controllers/memory cards have bad quality. 1st party accesories is always the way to go.

Who cares if MadKatz has a bad reputation..... they're cheaper. Plus,... no one in the thread cares about quality,... they care about a deal.

I like how I get bashed for trying to help,... and you guys are telling him QUICK throw your money at the boss.
I just said he should do research, and take his time.

You guys really need to get a life. Making fun of me, and my family, just so you can get a laugh. Yeah, my rich stepdad, who married my widowed mom from the ghetto gives me tons of money. You know,... my pregnant wife, and son who my rich parents support.
I don't serve in the military protecting your stupid @sses either. 14 hour shifts, in full chem gear, busting my ass for money.... NO,... my stepdad gives it to me.

Really,... you guys are @ssholes.

I really hoped you could get the set looking good,... but up yours.

This entire site is about deals. When there is a deal too good to pass, people jump on it; like the $9.99 Rumble Roses. Sure the game is no God of War, but for $10 you can't really beat the amount of fun (visually) it can provide. We have to put the budget, what its used for, and the amount of knowledge the person know about the product into perspective when we do recommendations. There's no way I will tell someone who has a $200 budget to get a $400 nVidia 6800 Ultra just because it's a better video card, that doesn't make sense. There's also no way I will tell someone who has no knowledge of gaming to get such a product either, even though they may have money to burn. This is why I'll never be a sales person, because I'm honest in telling ppl when its a good deal, what they REALLY need, and when they should buy it. Nothing can beat this $260 HDTV, sure its no Lexus and Mercedes, but it gets the job done for what he wants.

Its not what you said, its how much you sounded like a pompous, spoiled assclown when you said it.

I know,... I sounded spoiled.

I'm sorry I can save money and you can't.

You don't know me,... and you have no idea how hard it was to save the money up for that tv. After paying all my bills, and taking care of my family's needs,.... I managed to save up for it. Yeah,... I passed MANY deals here at CAG, but it was worth it.

The set will last me many years, and I'll be able to enjoy my games and movies without worries of any kind.
So when your parents tell you to save your money up for a nice car, so you don't end up with a lemon,... you'll just get the lemon.

For some people,... as stated above,... a car is to get to point A to B. Well that's fine if you're single, and don't have obligations. For me,... my family and career are obligations which I cannot neglect. What if I just bought the cheapest car I could get. Then it broke down while my wife was going into labor???
A car, like a television, or like any material object in the world is important for different reasons to everyone.

Since media is my pastime,.... I wanted the best quality.
That's all I was saying.
Just because all you care about is having the most of everything, doesn't mean you're right.
You want $5 games, so you can buy hundreds of them, and say you have them.
I don't see a price tag for quality. If the new Legend of Zelda was $70,... I'd still buy on release day. Sure it would drop eventually,.... but some games you can't wait for, and are worth paying full price.

You would not play the game for 2 years, and then pick it up for $10, just so you could save. That's retarded even for a CAG.
Some things are worth the money, we work so hard to obtain. What is the point of having money, if you can't spend it on what you want??

How many credit cards do you have??? Are they all paid off?? If they are,... why use them again?? Why not save your cash, so you'll have it for the future???
Probably cause you can't. You're impulsive, deal binges clean you out.
I, on the other hand, can prioritize. If I see something I want, I can save for it.

I am not a pompous ass. You are mad because I bought the set you couldn't save for. Instead of manning up, and stashing some cash,... you make excuses, and point fingers. Oh yeah,... he's rich and spoiled, that's why he has one.
I have a shit job, and SO many bills to pay, along with buying 20 games a month here at CAG,... is what you got. You're all the same here. Since I joined, it's been like watching 5yo's throwing money away on crap games.

Then, you lie to others, telling them that the games are good, so they are in the same boat you are. Followed by bitching about not having enough money for other stuff, and how you have so many games, you can't play them all.

I admit, I bought way to many games myself,... but now, when I sit down to play one, it's regal!
Nothing beats HalfLife 2 on my 50"WEGA, graphics to the max, wireless all the way.
That's being an ass,... and you are jealous. Lick these.
:)

Dayom, I would so gladly of bought that TV for $260. I've seen the Sanyo model in use and believe it or not its pretty good for its price range. Really nice that it has the HDTV tuner in it so you can pick up your local HD stations that are over the air.

Use this to see the signal strengths in your area

(You only need to enter your zipcode, but putting in your address will help out a little more if you live in a big area and uses that one zipcode - and you don't need to get that "more info on HDTV" crap or give them your e-mail so your good)

Once you do that...

Use this to see which Terk attenea you can use.

You might need to fiddle around a bit to get the signal to pick up, but once you do then you can get yourself some free HDTV programming like ABC Monday Night Football and Lost. :D

(BTW, Lost looks fucking awesome in HD)

Like I said, congrats OP. Nice TV for $260. :D

I am 20 years old, I work at Wal-Mart part time, and I pay for all my bills and college. I am just proving a point that I know how to save my money and use it when I can get a badass deal. So what if I don't want to buy a $5000 TV, I don't need one when a $260 TV will work just as great for me.

My best suggestion to everyone is to put Drone on your ignore list. He'll go away soon enough once he realizes that nobody is paying attention to him (much like any other troll).

Nicely said man.

The Sanyo HD sets are well-regarded over on AVSforum, in general, as great bang/buck. At $600-$800! At $260 that is a smokin' hot deal on a 30" HDTV, especially with the integrated ATSC/NTSC tuner.
Nothing beats HalfLife 2 on my 50"WEGA, graphics to the max
(Assuming LCD since Sony doesn't make a 50" CRT WEGA AFAIK anymore)
Personally I wouldn't take one of those LCD RPTVs with horrid black levels, poor contrast ratio, and slightly inaccurate colors for any price. If I got it for free I would turn around and sell it for a DLP, plasma, or a CRT RPTV any day. To each his own, I'd rather have RawIsJericho's 30" Sanyo than a 50" LCD RPTV ANY DAY. :D

My 100" DLP projected screen (Infocus X1 @ 800x600 rez, MSRP at the time was $999) may be lower-rez but it owns your puny 50" LCD for Mario Kart or Halo 2 co-op, with superior black levels for aforementioned Halo 2. :D

If I saw one of those Sanyo 30" HDTVS for $260 I would totally buy it just as a secondary display device to back up my projector, so I wouldn't have to close all the shades during the day :D

Great deal, man! Enjoy the HD! And buy the Microsoft HD pack, but don't fall for that overpriced Monster HD pack. And you totally owned drone with that checkbook picture! :applause: Way to save money!

Good deal on your Sanyo purchase, I'm glad you made this thread because I've been in the market for a new TV myself. I've considered getting the Sanyo 30's WS for a while but this thread has convince me to seriously consider it. I'm willing to spend $1000 for an HDTV but I want to get the best bang for my buck and something that will last at least 5 years. Recently though, size has become a concern because I moved into a condo so I would like to maximize my space, but I also want a good quality picture also so I'm torn between one and the other.

I have a question for those of you who own the $368 refurb Phillips TVs. My friend (SIUFan86) has that TV and is wanting to know if it can play Xbox games in HD (with the HD pack) straight out of the box, or if he will need the buy a tuner along with the Xbox HD pack.

I am almost 100% sure he has the same model number, I will have him post it on here shortly.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, is the built in tuner only for receiving HD programming using a "rabbit ear" or mounted antenna, or can I use it for regular cable and directv as well?

You should check around at some Wal-Marts because they have stopped selling this model. You might be able to get it on the cheap right now.

The only "bad" thing that I've noticed with this TV is when I am playing Halo 2 on the level Ritual. When I walk to the spot where the plasma sword is, my right speaker will make a weird muffled sound of sorts. I thought the speaker was blown at first. I switched my audio options on the Xbox to Dolby Surround and it has made the noise almost unnoticeable.

Should I worry about that? I haven't heard the noise while playing any of my other games or in any of my movies.

No tuner needed just plug it into the component inputs, and don’t forget to change the settings on the Xbox dashboard.

The built in tuner is only for over the air HD programming. You will need a separate HD box from Direct TV or regular cable. BTW Direct TV has a far superior standard definition picture if you’re trying to decide between that and cable.

Thanks for the reply, one question though. Where do I go on the Xbox dashboard to change the settings for the HD?

if i get the HD cables will it make a difference like it does on jerichos sanyo or do i not have a HD tuner in my tv?
