My suggestion would be to wait for the redesigned 3DS. I like the 3DS and I've enjoyed having it, but I have a lot of complaints with its current design based on my experience with the system.
First off, let me say that the 3D functionality doesn't interest me. It gives me a migraine -- so I leave it disabled. I don't believe this is any fault of the system, but with my eyes.
With that said, the slider for the 3D functionality doesn't have any type of lock or 'click' position to keep it turned off. So nearly everytime I go to turn on my system, I have to slide it back down. Not really all that inconvenient, but after doing it for the 500th time, my brain automatically thinks "WHY IS THERE NO LOCK?!?!"
Then there's the issue with the size of the system. I don't have big hands, but still, the system feels tiny to me and hard to grip. When the gameplay gets furious (SFIV multiplayer), I have a really difficult time pulling off combos and keeping hold of the system at the same time. I purchased a bigger battery (because the stock battery really blows) and it added some depth to the system. It helps a little, but not much.
The position of the cross directional pad is in a really awkward position and cramps my thumb.
There's also these little knobs on the bottom of the system that I'm guessing would act like feet if you were to sit the system down on a table. Between clenching the system to make sure it doesn't fall out of my hands and positioning my thumb to reach that awkward d-pad location, those little feet will nearly rub blisters on my fingers that hold the system from underneath.
To top it off, the hinge on the 3DS is really flimsy and has a lot of give. If you're riding in a vehicle, this creates somewhat of an issue.
There should be a lock under parental controls somewhere, read the manual, its to turn the 3D off for children who are under 6 since it could destroy their eyes according to Nintendo, lol!
