so-called 'New' games at Gamestop

CAGiversary!
Gamestop has a bin of games on clearance advertised as being 'new'. The price tag indicates the game is a new copy, yet the original wrap has been removed with game taken from the case. I asked the employee if I would get a new, factory sealed copy of the game from behind the counter if I decided to buy it, or if I would in fact receive the opened copy. He explained to me how the opened copy is their 'new' game since it has never been played. Supposively they removed the game (and of course, coated the case with stickers which are notorious for leaving sticky residue) to prevent customers from stealing the UMD. I remember witnessing a customer several years ago who brought in a game that was still factory-sealed for a trade-in, but was only given credit for a used game despite the game still being factory-sealed.

It's pretty jacked-up how Gamestop can open a new game, cover it with stickers, and still call it a 'new' game while a customer can bring in a factory-sealed, never before opened game and still be treated as though the game is used. Now I have to give my 'new' game the Goo-Gone treatment.

I noticed the employee put yet another sticker across the seal before handing the game back to me. I take it this additional seal is placed on the game to further enforce the notion it is a 'new' game, which means the employee could have given me the wrong game on error or a damaged copy of the game and gotten off without having to be responsible when the customer comes back to get a good copy of the game back. This makes it easy for the Gamestop employee to say 'I'm sorry. This seal is broken, so technically it is no longer new and we cannot refund your item as new games can only be returned if un-opened'.

What a bunch of crap. Does anyone agree with me?

if the game has already been opened, it is no longer new from a retailer's standpoint.

If you disagree, please tell me how I'm wrong.

Yes - this has been brought up a ton, but I don't think it is brought up nearly enough. What Gamestop is doing is fraud and I'm not sure how they are so capable of getting by with this.

The game is NOT new. It is opened and it was touched (and often times it was given to an employee to "rent" for a bit) and then worse, it's covered in horrible stickers and they charge you the premium price. It is ridiculous and I don't get how people are so keen on getting screwed up the ass... unless of course you are Samwell.

This issue has been brought up countless times. It is not a new occurrence. It has been happening for months/years. It is GS's standard.

Use the forum to vent your frustration (I know I made/commented on a similar thread to let out frustration) and move on. You're best bet is never shopping there again...

I didn't know this subject has already been beaten to death. I don't check this forum as often as many of you probably do.

It doesn't bother me because why would I buy a new game from Gamestop? All their discounts, and the only reason I shop there, is for used games.

So, eh, whatever.

I don't agree with their policy, and I won't give them my money for an opened product. But I won't lose any sleep about it.

Don't like it? Don't buy from them. But there's no need for a new thread on this topic. It's been beaten to death enough times already. How about a mod locks and/or merges this with another one of these threads.

It is a business. What do you not understand?

i bought Chrono Trigger a couple weeks ago when it was on sale for 29.99 new. I took the opened copy from the display and they gave me a sealed copy from behind the counter...i never normally buy new games at GS, but maybe the new games arent always gutted.

Simple. If I *really* feel the need to buy at GS for some reason (sale, preorder bonus, etc.), I ask for a sealed copy. If they don't have one, I shake my head in disgust and leave.

Why buy a full priced opened 'new ' game when you can buy a discounted 'pre-owned' game ?

I'm sure this is just part of their used game strategy .

They have plenty of display boxes for upcoming titles why don't they just keep those and put the price on them ?
Because it doesn't deter you from buying anything used .

I think everyone gets confused in these threads. Gamestop never claimed that 'new' meant factory sealed. New only means that they haven't sold the game hasn't been previously owned. You are really under no delusions when your buying the game that it's new.

It's fraud if Gamestop resealed used games and told you they have never been played. Gamestop chooses to open games, put them out there, and charge you $5 more. There is no fraud here. If you don't like it, don't buy from there.

I only buy used games, I recently bought Final Fantasy Tactics A2 "new" (took the sticker off luckily it left no residue) but I if I buy NEW games I go online

same old song and dance we have heard a million times but they still continue to do it and we continue to take it. what else can we do? it sucks but whatever, wait a week and buy it used or buy it somewhere else sealed
