so is the backward compatibility a joke or what?

I haven't been keeping completely up to date on 360 news, but just from reading XBOX threads I'm always hearing complaints from the 360 owners about how they wish they could still play such-and-such a game but they haven't gotten it working on the 360 yet. I knew the BC wasn't gonna be 100%, but we have recognizable games like the most recent Splinter Cell and Mortal Kombat 6 that aren't working right.

I'm just gettin filled with righteous fury as I read these complaints, because a lot of people probably sold their XBOX when they heard that the 360 would have BC, only to find that a huge chunk of their library was now unplayable.

I'm not calling down hellfire on Microsoft or anything, heck I am a huge XBOX supporter and lately I play it more than PS2 or GC. But I really think they've done wrong here, and that they should have been more up-front with the BC issue. I mean they did say how it would work, but it was buried in lots of PR-friendly news-speak and I feel like they implied that the situation would not be as bad as it currently is. Personally I find it unsettling that a game like Chaos Theory doesn't even work yet... that does not bode well!

I just feel for the people who sold their XBOX in anticipation of the 360. I am pissed off on your behalf! Has there been any news as to when some real progress will be made on the BC front? Or, 360 owners, is the situation really not as bad as I'm perceiving it? Do you feel betrayed or is it not really that bad?

while it would be nice to have a bigger list, but if you look at the work they need to do, it is understandable that it will take time to make more games b/c

Give them a little time. They had some vacation time just like the rest of us over the holidays, so things are probably just getting back up to speed over there. I'd anticipate another update in February.

The B/C list is decent, but there is tons of room for improvement. Some big games are still missing from the list. Doom 3(All versions), Morrowind, Far Cry Instincts. Then there's a lot of really good niche titles like Beyond Good & Evil, Shemue II, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Otogi 1 & 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Silent Hill 2, and The Warriors that should be added. I just hope the keep rolling out the monthly updates, and that they don't just slowly let it become an afterthought.

I don't know if it is joke as much as it is a half-assed afterthought. My brother-in-law is regretting that he traded in his Xbox.

Yeah it is BS. If they were upfront about it that would be one thing. Totally agree with the OP.
Let's hope they are actually still working on it. Hope Mechassault1 & 2 get GOOD bc soon.

I haven't had much a problem with it, then again I've mostly been playing, uhh I dunno, XBox 360 games...

I have played a few games here and there including Halo 1 and 2 and Fable and both ran great.
They threw it in at the last minute to get people to buy more Xbox 360s and not Xboxes. What else can be said?
I really don't think that's true though. I think they've been working on it for awhile. In fact, we know they have because there were reports about how hard it was going to be to make the 360 backwards compatible a long time ago. I actually think it's somewhat remarkable that they are emulating the Xbox as well as they are this early in the consoles life.

I agree that one of the reasons they were trying so hard for BC was to discourage people from buying original Xboxes though.

The fact that Mortal Kombat: Deception was on the list then pulled off is proof that they're working hard on it. They could've let it be half-assed but they decided to retool it.

As was said, I think they're on a vacation, a well-deserved one. The 360 launch took a lot out on employees and customers alike. I'm sure there will be another update soon.

Yeah it pretty much sucks.

The developers need to get their act together and make more games playable for the 360, lazy little fucks. I bought a bunch of cheap XBox games a while back (in anticipation for the 360) that still aren't playable, and I'm pissed. They're not even obscure games either, I'm talking Riddick and Doom 3 here.

Did everyones Xbox fall apart when they bought a 360? If you want to play your old games just keep the old xbox. I bought my 360 to play the new stuff. To much of a big deal over nothing.

I PM'ed you my paypal information. Since it's not that big of a deal you can send me $100 so that I can buy a Xbox.

I never received your pm. If you can afford a xbox 360 you can afford another $100 for an old xbox. A year from now this will be a dead subject.

Not a big deal to you but obviously a big deal to plenty of other people. The limited BC was a major factor in my decision to not buy a 360 yet. Don't try to tell other people how important BC should be to them.

Yeah it sucks. I wanted to get a 360 seeing how I never had the first XBOX, but now I'm more tempted to get the old XBOX seeing how their are more games I'm interested in on the not compatable list then there are on the compatable list and 360 game roster. What to do? If they'd just mark down the old xbox's some I think I'd have my solution.
or the $70 wireless controller ($50 controller and the fn $20 rechargeable pack that should be with it).
WTF? I have yet to encounter a wireless controller, at least for consoles, that has a rechargable battery pack in it so I don't see how you can include that into the equation. $50 for wireless maybe a little high too (though the logitech model for th exbox is the same price) but we'll likely see prices fall a little when 3rd party makers are allowed to venture into that field.

Back on topic, IMO backward compatibility should be playable right out of the box but I won't go there. If MS really makes the pretty much entire library available and running smoothly I'd still be happy even if that process takes a year or so. And I honestly expected there to be some errors with it given the process they are using. However I'd like to see MS give developers some kind of incentive to put the emulators for backwards compatibility right on the disc for new releases. I don't even know for sure how that works, but I can't see why they can't build the 360 emulation software or whatever into game, especially if MS helps them out and there are no future plans to port the game to the 360 (ala Burnout Revenge). Like I said, dunno if it's even possible but it'd be wonderful if it was.

Since I have not seen an Xbox for $100, can someone direct me to a store that sells for that price? I'm searching for a friend whose xbox fried. All I find are 179.99 bundles. PM me if possible. Thanks in advance!

Yeah the backwards issue annoys me to no end but I would give MS sometime.

We are in the middle of January, and I'm sure MS is working on the 360 issues that same face, before they even think about more emulation.

I'm hoping they work on all the Live and system link games first before venturing into working on all single player games. Why? Because Live and system link games have more replay value for me. It sucks that Samurai Showdown and Rebout are coming out for the XBox yet I can't play them on the 360 because SNK/MS don't want to cooperate being backwards. I think this hurts sales more then anything for the developers because believe it or not some people are just buying 360s and not original XBox's (my friend is one of them) so this can only hurt in the long run if more titles don't go backwards.

Anyways, you gota have patience. Didn't George Michael tell you so? owwww! Kidding. Kidding.

Everybody knows it was faith, not patience.;)

I stupidly assumed that new release Xbox games would be BC but according to the IGN MVP 2006 NCAA Baseball and 25 To Life (according to Xbox fourms) are unplayable on the 360........

WTF!?!

I actually hit up 3 blockbusters trying to rent MVP and had planned on buying it tomorrow since it's only $19.99 at Best Buy after the coupon......... 25 to Life I just wanted to give a rent and see how it turned out after all this time.....

I figure they'll never have all the games in the Xbox library 100% BC, so there seemed to be no reason to sell my Xbox. Which is why I'll have it warrantied until Jan 2008. By then, they'll either have it all figured out, or say "This is it for BC".

Either way, I'm in no rush for a 360, so it'll play out over the months of 2006. Plus, as people have said, they needed a break over the holidays, so we'll see what comes out in Feb, March and April.

I hear ya on that one, Ive always liked the MVP series so I wouldnt mind having college baseball for $19.99 A/C. Theres really no sense in buying it though if we have no clue when/if it will become BC :(

The real WTF!?! here is that someone wants to play 25 to Life....

I'm kinda divided. The BC isn't perfect, but the games that run well on it (I've only played Halo 2 and Call of Cthulu) look awesome in upscaled HD. I think that's a very cool bonus. Sure, I'd love to have everything running perfect and bail on the old Xbox, but in the meantime I just push that little component 2 button on my receiver, push the power button on my Xbox, and play Star Wars Legos with my 4 year old or knock off another chapter in Otogi... It's not ideal, but it definitely isn't so bad that I skipped out on a 360. I'm having enough fun with CoD2, PDZ, PGR3, and Geometry Wars that I haven't had much overwhelming desire to play the old system. The games they I do have and want to play, well I'll just start with what's BC and working well and hope more of them fit the bill by the time I get around to playing them. In the meantime I still have Kameo and Condmned to play.

Are there that many people really ready to drop $400 to primarily play games they've already got and are already playing?

I also sold my ole xbox before the 360 came out... I currently have 10 ole xbox games, and 1 out of 10 games would play from my collection... which is halo 2..Now that is pretty sad...

anyway I just bought a new green halo xbox system, and it's coming this week.

WooHoo! BC sux! but my 360 gets alot of play already!

I am in the same boat as Shrike. I still haven't seen a 360 premium pack but am in no hurry to get one now. I figure by next fall there will be more compatible xbox games, $20 greatest hits games, a price drop on the console, larger 40 and 80 GB hard drives, more good games, better looking games, more xbox arcade games, an actual pack in game for the xbox 12 month gold pack, and more hardware bugs worked out. Long live the cheapasses who wait patiently!

LOL yea yea I know 25 to Life got terrible reviews and everything but I had it in my Gamefly queue so I could see how it turned out after all those delays. I've long wanted a good cops and robbers type game and in the beginning this looked promising.

I won't be renting or buying MVP untill we get another BC update. I was looking yesterday to rent and then decided to buy with coupon before I checked and found that it didn't work on the 360.

I sold my Xbox on Ebay for about $110 or so after all fees and shipping was deducted. I've only got 5 Xbox games and all but 1 work on my 360 and I stupidly assumed new releases that were not coming to the 360 would be playable on it...

What's even worse is the crap emulation.

Even Halo 2 sucks on the 360. Every time I play Terminal I get this fucking ghost thing.

Plus, has it always taken so long to set up a game? I know I haven't played Halo 2 in months, but come on, I couldn't get a SINGLE rumble-pit game at all.

I haven't had any connection problems playing halo 2 on the 360. I do notice the nice confy 360 controller is a lot different in moving my guy around screen. IMO the controller is a lot more sensative to movements. The xbox controller that I was most recently using was fairly new, so it wasn't due to it being an old worn out controller.

I'm glad I kept my original Xbox because I have barely any original Xbox games that are BC on the 360. I've only had a few problems in Halo 2 on my 360, but I think that's because either my system or HDD is messing up. I don't think it's the emulation that is causing the problems.
