I don't know, I'm only like 4-5 hours in, but I'm not really feeling the "this game is incredibly easy" vibe that everyone else seems to be. Maybe because I'm still using the Zwerg Scandroid as my Ravager, he's starting to get pretty weak compared to the enemies but I have yet to recruit a better RAV.

The boss fight right before you meet
Hope
was pretty darn hard for me, I barely scraped by and I'm not sure what I could have done better apart from just being higher leveled.
I went to Sunleth -> Steppe before the Massif, and everything was quite challenging at that point -- maybe that's why I'm more powerful. But that boss you're talking about, I literally just sat on Com/Rav/Rav for an easy 5 star.

That shouldn't be my fault though, the game offered different paths =[. It makes sense that you had a hard time, but the game should of made it more clear that I chose a path that would break the game. I didn't want to break the game, but I know some RPG gamers live for that.

On a more awesome note, I have a Behemoth as a Commando for my team now.

Only played XIII-2 for a short while last night, but liked what I saw so far. Do the QTE's with choices have any effect on the outcome of the scene, or are they just minor optoins (X for sword, B for magic, etc)? Either way I found it a cool departure from the standard QTE stuff, and reminded me more of Shenmue's choices than God of Wars "Press X or fail"

Oh god. You may have just saved me some money. Is he part of the story, or just a side character that has a cameo?

Well, I'm not too far in yet, but he's more than just a quick cameo. If it helps at all,
he is 10 years older and seems a bit more manly.

Hope is pretty awesome in XIII-2, was very pleased with his cameo.

And yeah I'm glad to see the QTEs only happen in a handful of scenarios, so they aren't overdone and are actually pretty fun to do.

^ I was wondering the same thing.
Nervous to try since he seems massive.

Do stats between classes carry over to other classes?

Finished Tales of Symphonia. Thinking of finally finishing the only ps2 game I just gave up on out of frustration, Ephemeral Fantasia. BTW, what are peoples opinion here of El Shaddai? Is it worth picking up a new copy for 20 bucks?

Side note, PS2 games look horrid when pushing their signal through a component cable and look nicer through a rgb cable.

That's great news! I hope it does get reprinted. By the time I started considering getting it, the prices were higher than I would've been willing to pay.

Took ~26 hours to get through the main story of XIII-2 with minimal side questing. Looks like a plethora of extra content await me now =]

The story and characters weren't bad, but it seemed the game's biggest weakness was the Yuehl character. Everyone's motives are attached to her, but those relationships with her are hardly touched upon. And I really disliked how they once again have to ruin a perfect ending (like X-2 did), but I guess we can pretend it never happened.

Also, the ending song completely ruins the final and dramatic cutscene :bomb:

Took me a few years but I beat Grandia. 90 freakin' hours!!!! I have a feeling it shouldn't have taken me that long. What a great little game, I miss these simple yet whimsical RPGs.

I'm in a gaming lull so going back and completing my back-log is nice. Now what to conquer next? Valkyrie Chronicles or Devil Summoner 2?

I like El Shaddai, but I'm aware my opinion is in the minority. The visuals, music, and story were great IMO. The gameplay isn't its strong suit, but I think it was definitely fine in that department. I think it's easily worth $20 and with the financial trouble that Ignition is in I don't think copies of it are going to be easy to find pretty soon.

I tried the XIII-2 demo just for kicks. I couldn't have turned off my system faster.
Chronicle them Valkyrias, yo.

Oohh yeah just read about it. Hmm, well then I will definitely pick it up then. Thanks.

I played it a few years ago and got really far, but it was on a friends PS3 so now I have to start over. It's the only thing that's been holding me back. The game was fantastic.

really liked it's style/graphics/music/story as well, but the gameplay got pretty boring pretty quick imho. Still gonna finish it one day, but shelved it to play other stuff. If you can find it cheap I'd still say it's worth a shot.

Anyone play Nostalgia on the DS? Pretty simple, but I'm enjoying it so far. It's a nice throwback (nosstalgia, get it?). Not the best game ever, but entertaining.

I played the first 15 hours or so, I enjoyed the beginning but lost interest as the game went along.

How far? Do you remember what your last mission was?
How far? Do you remember what your last mission was?
It was a mission in the big city (forgot the name) but I was chasing a car the kippnaped that the princess. Not sure if my description is 100% accurate but it was something along those lines.

I really enjoyed VC, had a wonderful looking concept and the battles we're good fun, even if they eventually evolved into just walking up into people's faces with max level scouts and shock troopers.

But damn did those cutscenes remind me of Star Ocean 4 :puke:

Aye, I remember that one. I failed that mission on the first go, and got it done on the second turn my second try.

That's about half way through, if memory serves. Maybe a wee bit less.

That bad huh? I do recall them being very anime-ish, but for the most part it didn't bother me. Now SO4 I couldn't stand. As soon as I met that monotone little girl I was out.

I do have to mention I suck a SRPGs. I have no patience for micro management. So all the work that goes into preparing your troops is really annoy to me. Plus my idea of strategy is going all gung-ho and killing everyone ASAP, which often leads to me getting into bad situations. I remember having trouble on the big tank battle. Took me several tries to beat that.

Valkyria isn't particularly hard, but when bad shit does happen, it's quick and decisive. Keeping your tank in the front to act as cover for your squad will get you through 90% of your missions so long as you have an engineer handy to compensate for enemy lancers and tanks and keep snipers stocked. Abuse mortars and and driving over enemies to get them out of cover, because the cover mechanics in the game are bullshit. Grass counts as cover for some stupid reason, and is a huge enemy and friend, though it becomes less terrifying once assault troops level up high enough to get flamethrowers.

Snipers and the tank's mortar are terrifyingly strong in the beginning, but become merely "useful" as time goes on. Lancers have the opposite going on, as they have very few targets early, but their attacks are far more efficient than tank rounds.

Rosie, Largo, and Alicia are usually more useful as support than front-lines. They're all great in a fight, yeah, but since they give command points, you're better off risking others. On the plus side, they're plot-necessary, so they can't be perma-killed.

The cutscenes in VC were nowhere near the levels of terrible that SO4 was. That game was fucking awful.

Oh god, fuck SO4 right in every orifice. I'm still trying to figure out how the hell I made it through the game. I did like the battle system, other than that.. ugh.. it was painful, very painful.

Maybe it was the hentai space kittens? ;)

Damn, I totally forgot about it, but I watched my roommate play parts of that game. Comparing Valkyria to Star Ocean 4? Panzer, I do fear that game scarred you for life.

I loved Star Ocean 4 on my first go-around, but anything after that just resulted in me quitting an hour in.

So far I am really digging FFXIII-2 compared to FFXIII. I thought I would hate Noel, but I find him to be a decent character with a decent voice actor behind him. I like the refined leveling system and the monster/pokemon system as well. What I don't like are rehashed level designs and the time-travelling aspect. Just feels too much like Chrono Trigger with that.

Scheisse, I forgot about the pig.

Okay, the pig was stupid. It's still nowhere near Star Ocean 4 bad. Valkyria legitimately rose above the clichéd bullshit sometimes, and at its worst - the beach scene, for example - it was never Star Ocean bad.

Also, fuck the word "cliché". Always making me open up the character map to find the e with the acute accent on it.
Nothing is as bad as watching these creepy, emotionless, doll puppets move around the screen. How did full grown adults think this was ok to make?
Ok, that was vaguely creepy, and I'm the father of a 5 year old. I think I'd be lying awake at night worried that she'd be appearing at my doorway with a knife.

And no, nothing in VC is nearly that bad. Actually, VC feels very much like a throwback to WWII movies made back in the day. Yeah, it is kinda cornball, but fun in its own way.
My apologies.

XIII-2 review will be up tomorrow!
Pick them balls up off the ground bub. You beat FFXIII-2. I could (nor would) do anything like that.

I don't like the FFXIII weapon upgrade system. I'm more then halfway through the game and have only upgraded one weapon a little bit.

It costs too damn much early in the game and you upgrade a weapon you're going to throw away eventually.

Just make it simple.

Yeah, it's not worth pursuing until the final chapters, and is really more essential if you want to do all the game's end-game hunts. And if you enjoyed the combat you're going to love those.

That's dopey in my opinion.

Although I actually like the combat system. A little crazy but it works for me.
Well, the weapons don't necessarily get better as the game goes on. They just get different. So you could upgrade a weapon early on and stick with it if the stats seem to fit what you want to use that character for.

Here's a weapons guide that could be useful for determining which weapons you want to use: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/928790-final-fantasy-xiii/53941597
True - I was just wishing it was a bit simpler. I'm not sure who was clamoring for 6 different weapon paths for 6 different characters who will be primarily playing three of 6 different roles. And all the junk you level up with. Whatever happened to beat an enemy, weapon levels up :p

The weapons go a long way towards letting you customize the party to complement your playstyle and preferred paradigms. Especially with the bonus effects and synthesis effects, you can do some pretty interesting stuff. The expense of the components prevents you from doing much upgrading until the postgame, but you don't really need it before then anyway.

yeayuuuuuh~!!! Im like 30 hours in this game now!!

I can haz castle burger~!!!

how many ppl do u kno can take 2 of the greatest things and combine them into one great thing!!

I am one, so u at least kno one.

I can't believe how rarely I have played JRPGs over the last couple years. Disgaea 4, the DS Dragon Quests, Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata are the only "recent" RPG's I've really liked.
