Sonic and the Black Knight in Spring 09
This has to be wrong. And I could probably prove it, but it would require me digging out magazines, and frankly I don't have the time.

Just sayin'.
Hey, I could be wrong. It's been years. If I remember correctly, the mag was aiming more to promote N64 or something. Now that I think about it, there may have been a CT cover on NP. Looking at gamerankings.com, Nintendo Power gave the original CT a 4.08/5 or 81.6% (that's kind of hard to believe, and I think the rating system was different than a simple 5 point scale back then).

Funny side note, I'm watching Adult Swim right now, and they have a guy complete with mullet, denim vest, and drinking a beer talking to a red beast with nipple clamps wearing a third party silver N64 controller as a belt buckle
Nintendo doesn't control the content in Nintendo Power.
Dude... come on. They may not have an iron fist over the editors at the mag, but NP is a marketing vehicle for Nintendo. I don't know if they still do this, but Nintendo even had a game tips "hotline" they used to push in NP to have players call a 900# for how to get past difficult parts of a given Nintendo game. I wonder how many phone calls they got for Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden I's last stage...

NP did feature Chrono Trigger for a fair amount of time. It was featured in their rpg section, a small strategy guide section for two months I think. That, Ogre Battle, and PTO (I think).

I could be mistaken, but I thought multiple reviewers gave scores to many of the games reviewed (at least back then). The 4.08 could be an average score.

It's probably not as bad as it used to be, but NP is far from independent. I stopped reading when they gave something like Yoshi's Story a ridiculously high score.

Chrono Trigger got enough coverage for me to notice it. I'm not digging out the magazines either, but I think they covered up to your first trip to
The Future.

So it seems like this is the second game in the Sonic "story book" series, Secret Rings being the first. While I hate the sucked into a book storyline, I thought the game was very good. If its the same team, then I can at least expect a decent Sonic game.

Interesting theory. I could see that. As bad as this looks, I really do like how they're making the Wii games their own rather than having a crap port of the HD versions.

The only thing I always enjoy from Sonic games nowadays are the cheesy generic rock songs. Also the generic Knuckles hip-hop/rap songs, because apparently he's Black.

I actually enjoy a majority of 3D sonic music too. I think if most people look past the initial reaction of "what's this crap rock music again?" they'll find a lot of the songs have catchy melodies as they did in the 2D originals, but with a rock twist.

This always makes me laugh. And cry, because it sounds terrible.

I think people give Sonic too much credit in the first place. The original Sonic games are probably much better than the current ones (I haven't actually played anything past Sonic 3, so I don't know), but the original games have always been, and always will be, Sega's unsuccessful attempt to counter Super Mario Bros, mostly fueled by marketing and not so much by talented/creative game developers. Mind you, I bought into that hype when I was a kid. I had a Genesis and I espoused the viewpoint that the Genesis was better, but I was a kid and susceptible to such marketing stuff. Mind you, I'm not saying that Sonic 1, 2 and 3 are bad games - they aren't, and they are worth playing, but they weren't all that great either. They were me-too games with a gimmick (he's faster! He runs quickly into things you can't see, because he's faster!) The Genesis was suppose to have better graphics, and it did, but it didn't have better games. Ditto for Sonic.

I would say Sonic was a me-too game in terms of it had jumping and collecting. That, of course, would include almost all 2D platformers that generation.

Why not Sonic and the Quest for the Holy Grail? That makes a lot more sense than Sonic trying to achieve Knighthood of all things.
I think people give Sonic too much credit in the first place.
While I will agree that the best Sonic does not equal the best Mario, the truth is that few games do. I find the original Sonic games to be fun little platformers. I think too often people play the first couple of levels (which aren't much to impress) and ignore the rest of the game. To me, they rank below Mario, Castlevania, and others, but I wouldn't be completely dismissive of them either.

That being said, I don't really get the hate for the Sonic Adventure series. Yes, it's flawed. But I actually found them to be very fun games (with the minor exception of parts here and there).

I think the worst part about it all is that Dead Rising (which looks pretty good from the screenshots) gets a tiny little blurb at the top, despite all the awesome, zombie-filled covers they could do for it, and this likely awful Sonic game gets all the attention.

I don't know how to feel about Dead Rising on Wii. I tried the 360 version, and thought it was ok. Not great. I never understood why it never reached PS3 when Lost Planet got an abysmal port.
If they made Sonic faster from the get go, turned down the difficulty and gave you circling back paths (instead of running into doors) it would definitely be superior to Secret Rings, which I didn't think was that bad.
I'm hoping that this is a sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, which I thought was a good game that could've been great with a little more refinement.
Do I get to say "I told you so"? :D

Just out of curiousity, how did you feel about last month's issue of NP, with the Mad World cover and blowout?

NP Details and scanshots:
http://www.blueblur.org/2008/07/21/sonic-and-the-black-knight-nintendo-power-details/

Highlights
Story:
-”This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight.”
-”Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur.”
-”his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor”

Gameplay features (First part sounds a bit like that Usagi Yojimbo game from the Commodore 64):
-If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you’ll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.
-”At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.
-You can purchase items from residents. “Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit.”
-About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones.

Control highlights:
-”As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts.”
-More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump.
-”During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick”
-”Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down”
-Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick.

Clearly what you've all been waiting for ;):
-”This time, however, some of Sonic’s friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn’t ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow.”
-Playing as these other characters is entirely optional. You will be able to play through game as Sonic, or switch to the other characters if you choose.

This looks like it's going to be like Secret Rings with a sword. Looks like I can wait for a clearance.

Sorry about that. Didn't notice that line.

Whoah. Whoah. No need to apologize to a jackass like me; I wasn't trying to lay the smack down. I just have a mouth like a sailor is all.

Black Knight looks pretty decent.

NO NO NO NO NO! Screw Sonic's Shitty Friends! I refuse to purchase this game on the grounds of an over abundance of shitty friends!

It doesn't sound like it'll be on rails.

I need to see this in motion. It sound real interesting though.
It actually sounds a lot like the old Crash Bandicoot games to me, with limited 3D motion.

Oh, so the sword talks now.

Hey guys You guys forgot the cameo appearance by ZELDA[end sarcasm]
It looks pretty good, except for this sounds like secret rings 2, I didn't really like the theme of secret rings. I hate how the sword can talk, I bet it will be one of those nasilly voice annoying tip givers so SEGA doesn't need to make a non-existent person tipping you. Overall I want this game. =P

Am I the only person who's hoping the game will be on rails? I liked it in SatSR because it let you focus more on dodging obstacles and getting stuff without mucking around with which way to go. If SatSR had a one-button "reverse direction" button (and gameplay to match), it'd have been perfect IMO.

The game looks not that bad. I hope it is less like Sonic and the Secret Rings. It was too on rails for me. Personally it was like a snowboarding game but and you were following one flat road the whole time.

What I hope they do copy the idea of Sonic Adventures 1's levels but make them more awesome.

I'm sorta surprised by how not bad this game sounds. Certainly it could go either way in implementation, but the fact that it's even possible that a Sonic game with a sword isn't doomed is astonishing.

It looks like they took out the slide/jump mechanic, which I ended up liking a lot in Rings. Looks far more interesting than Unleashed.

Wow, that IGN review really does make it sound pretty horrendous. The disconnect between the two reviews is pretty massive, though.

I really wish they would just make a 2D platforming Sonic for the home consoles. This sword fighting and hog-wolf crap is just silly.
It will still sell, and Sega won't learn their lesson.
How well has Unleashed sold?

What I garnered from that IGN review was too much eye-candy (presentation) and too little gameplay. Sounds like Sonic Dynasty Warriors.

Wait - I was totally uninterested until I saw this. I haven't liked Sonic since Sonic 2, but I want more Dynasty Warriors-style games for Wii. Although there's no way crappy Sonic characters could top the fun I have with Bikini Zombie Slayers...

Got this from Gamefly and it's just not an entertaining game. It's the first time I've actually played a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure and it's more boring than that game was, which is saying something for me. I'll probably pack it up now and send it back on Monday.

From the early trailers it looked like it played smooth, but I guess they edited it like that. After watching actual game play footage from the Gametrailers review it just looks sad.

Sonic's like a homeless guy you recognize on the street. You remember him going to high school with the poor guy but just don't wanna give him money.

This almost makes me want to break down and add a sig to my account...
