Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Announced

Phantasy Star, Shining Force, and Golden Axe? I'm in, glad I didn't pick up the ps2 version.
Vectorman, too? Awesome. Sucks I already have a few on the VC, but it'll work.

A dreamcast collection would be great. I know I would be picking it up day one. Hell I would have it preordered.
Damn, no Sonic CD. I know it's not Genesis, but still I want it without having to buy a Sega CD
Then buy Sonic Gems Collection for Gamecube. Probably cheaper to get that & a GC than it is to get the original game & a Sega CD.

I'll feed my cat to my PS3 if one of the unlockable games is the arcade version of Golden Axe 2. God that game should've gotten a home port on something. Maybe super early Sega Saturn. Awesome beat 'em up.

All of you don' know SHIT about games. Phantasy Star 1 DID INDEED go to the Sega Megadrive in Japan, BUT it was a very limited Promotion run and had only about a thousand copies as a print run. It was very exclusive and now very rare to get. It's hard as shit to find and really isn't worth getting since it's just a straight port, but it did indeed get a Megadrive port.

Well that settles it. I indeed didn't know about an incredibly limited and obscure print run of a title from the late 80s of a game that was ported between two systems in a country on the other side of the world.

I always thought there might be an unquestionable benchmark in determining whether or not I knew shit about games.

Now I know.

The only game missing that I'd love to see is Landstalker, but I'll still pick this up for the Shining games, especially Shining in the Darkness. The article posted on IGN did say there would be unlockable master system and arcade games - I'd love to see an arcade perfect Daytona USA myself.

This is surprising, but great news. I assumed Sega would just be sticking with digital distribution (on XBLA, PSN, and VC), but I'm glad they're not. Hopefully we'll get more retro collections from other companies instead of having to pay $5-$8 per game.

This is the same shit over and over and over again since the Sega Saturn. Throw Sonic CD, Knuckles Choatix, and a freshly made Sonic 4 on there and they got themselves a sale. But with this recycled bullshit, no way.

You heard the man, people. Time to turn in your gamer badges because you didn't know about the most obscure videogame factoid in the world.

Holy crap this is hella awesome!! ALL the sonics, SoR, Golden Axe, plus a load of other cool gems here. Need some Wonderboy III on there, (who cares if its an sms game, its great!) Cant wait for this one!

I wonder which arcade games will be on there...Crazy Taxi??? hmmmm....

AHHHHHH THAT A WAY TO DO IT! But I just got back from the most boring two hours I've ever experienced and I feel like I've just been through a mix of Russian and Chinese torture. I don't know what's worse. When I thought I got hosed when I thought it was 40 minutes or when I realized it was a two hour tour.

It's moderately obscure, but it certainly isn't "the most obscure videogame factoid in the world." I knew it.

On a technical level, I believe the Megadrive cart was actually a Master System cart with a built in Power Base converter.

And since the Power Base just turned off the Genesis's 68k, you could probably set the emulator up to do the same and run the Megadrive Phantasy Star 1 in Z80 mode.

Internet smackdown aside.....

I'm excited to get a chance to play Vectorman, Phantasy Star and classic Genesis games allllll over again on my ps3.

including Sonic’s nemesis Dr. Eggman (AKA Dr. Robuttnik)

Fixed

Since they want those platforms to be forgotten and/or feel no one cares about those platforms due to failing badly, that's why they ignore it (from what I believe). The Genesis was Sega's biggest consoles sales wise and that's why they look to putting its games in a classical compilation a lot.

The SEGA CD Still sold several millions in the US so that wasn't a complete failure.

I did! I said I thought it did come out somewhere.

So I was right!!

TAKE THAT!

I know it's hyperbole, but that's pretty obscure.
AHHHHHH THAT A WAY TO DO IT!

true fact, but I not only knew it, but I have the game complete (both US Master System and Japanese Megadrive). I want yo' badge!!!!!!!

I didn't want to have to do this, but now you're gonna have to TASTE MY REFRESHMENT.

I own the HITLER game for the Sega Megadrive. How do you top THAT?

I have visited the spot at the bottom of the ocean where the nazi army is frozen, ready to be melted and unleashed upon the world on 12/12/12.

Now everyone. FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS!

I still wonder why someone at the fleamarket had that game? Though in all honesty, I've gotten more enjoyment just possessing it then I did from other games.

DO NOT BUY THIS. EVER. NO. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. JUST NO.
Why the hate on this? Phantasy Stars, Sonics, Streets of Rage, Golden Axes....all on one disc in hi-res? I already got a couple of these on Virtual Console...wish I didn't.

I'm gonna buy this on day #1 baby! Streets of Rage 3 and Golden Axe 2 and 3 will be mine muahaha.

On a side note...if only they included Splatterhouse 2 and 3 that would be great...

Streets of Rage 3 alone is 40+ dollars. This is the deal of a lifetime. Though I better sell the old originals I have.

Though I hope that Sega goes for the gusto and puts the original manuals in the game so you can read them. Oh and those strategy guides they did for their games back then. That would also be nice. I still have the PS2 strategy guide. Though the PS3 guide is my favorite out of the genesis guides. I owned that guide for like four years before I owned the game. Reading it over and over again front to back. AHHHH those were the days...
After this we need a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast collection.
Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force. It always pisses me off that I missed out on those 2 games. I always meant to pick up a used Saturn.

Any Genesis compilation is not complete without the greatness that is Warsong.

Here is some good news:
http://www.rpgsite.net/news/297.html
Sega has confirmed that the 'smoothing' filter that has been seen applied to classic games in screenshots of the upcoming Mega Drive Collection will be optional.

Speaking to RPGSite, a Sega PR representative confirmed that the filter which proved controversial with fans would be optional. "I’ve had confirmation that the filter can indeed be switched off," Martin Snelling of Sega UK told us. "And the games will display at whatever ratio your console is set at – 4:3 or 16:9. If playing in 16:9 the game will fit and not have black borders at the side." he added, confirming another feature that will please fans.

Yesterday Sega announced the exciting new compilation of classic games for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, offering over 40 classic games from yesteryear for a budget price, all on one disc. For RPG fans, the collection will include several early titles from the Phantasy Star series.

Fans were pleased, and reaction online was overwhelmingly positive for such a good value package - until screenshots released.

Classic Genesis/Mega Drive games were shown with a smoothing filter applied not unlike what many PC emulators use to make games look cleaner. However in this case fans argued that the filter caused a loss of detail and made the games look worse than they did at their original, blocky resolution.

The confirmation that this filter will be optional will allow many fans of classic gaming to breathe a sigh of relief.

Awesome news.:D I'm playing in 16 x 9.

I already got the other genesis collection but I will be picking this up for sonic, shining force, streets of rage 2, and dynamite headdy. So glad I didn't buy dynamite headdy on the VC the other day. I wish we could have got general choas rather than some of that other crap that was on the other compilation. LOL, Dragonforce isn't going to be on there.
Day one purchase. Don't care about the filter but I really hope (though it's looking doubtful) these things have online play. I don't care how basic and bare bones it is, I just wanna play Streets of Rage 3 with friends online since we have a blast with part 2 on Live.

I think it's possible that Phantasy Star 1 will be an unlockable title since there was a Mega Drive port in Japan and they could always just use the translation that was in the GBA version of PS1 (or the the original Master System version).

That being said where the hell is Revenge of Shinobi? At one point that game, Golden Axe and Sonic 1 were in EVERY Genesis compilation, now it's nowhere to be seen. I'm guessing it's because of copyright issues?
I would think the Revenge of Shinobi issue would be copyright... as there is a very famous webslinger who makes an appearance in one of the latter levels in you may recall... Comparing the two lists of games there are a few not yet announced, whether they may or may not be will be determined ... Ecco Jr (yuck), Shadow Dancer, and Sword of Vermillion are not yet listed on the games list yet

Someone on Gamefaqs found the copyright legal mumbo-jumbo for this compilation and it revealed that there will be a total of 49 games. My math skills tell me that we'll be getting 9 hidden games. I wonder if the hidden titles will be different for 360 and PS3.
Two of those hidden games should be Phantasy Star Generation and Phantasy Star Generation II.
I doubt it, since they will most likely be all Genesis stuff.

Are Gunstar Heroes or Alien Soldier confirmed for the compilation yet? If both of them are on there, I can sell off the Treasure Box...

Apart from those, though, I dunno what other Sega-published games there were that are worth playing that aren't already on here. Something tells me no Thunder Force IV...

Can't wait for this.... Shinobi III and SOR 2 in HD should be great.

Neither one is listed, and one of the trophies/achievements is for playing all of the Sega arcade titles, which I guess means that the 9 hidden games are likely coin-op ports, rather than Genesis ones. Not 100% sure of this though.

If there are indeed coin-op ports, then I'd like to see Shinobi and Shadow Dancer on there, as those have never gotten halfway decent home releases. They're still excellent games, too, though much different from Shinobi 3 or something like that. On the last Genesis Collection the arcade games were just garbage that nobody would honestly want to play, so yeah, I hope it's different this time.

I hope someone at Sega finally decided to acknowledge the arcade version of Golden Axe 2. Nothing like riding around on a praying mantis carrying a catapult.

Yeah, arcade versions of some of the Genesis' games need to show up, except for Altered Beast, because that'd be a waste. But if Sega's old-school arcade games are in, man... I hope they don't waste their chance here. I mean, this has me a lot more excited for the game than before.

Maybe we can even get Super Hang-On or Golden Axe: Revenge of DeathAdder.

I just hope that Sega has set aside their obsession with unlocking stuff, though. If you have to play through Shinobi III to get the Shinobi arcade game or something, that'd be fine, but I don't want to go through the whole "play Tail's Adventure for the Game Gear 50 times and leave the game on for 20 hours" nonsense that prior collections had...

I've bought WAY too many compilations over the past two gens(from the Arcade Party Pak and others on the PS1 to the Midway's Arcade Treasures on PS2). Plus, I hate to say it, but I have all of the games out of that collection via physical copies that I never play on the Genesis systems I have NOW.

But if they announce the unlockable game(s) as being something earth shattering that I haven't played in years, I might splurge once the game goes on clearance.

I have the Sonic Mega Collection (Xbox) and the Sega Genesis Collection (ps2). Is it better to hang on to these, or sell them and pick up this new collection (ps3)?

I'm the same way. I'll have to wait to see a list of all the secret games. But most likly I'll pass it up. I've barely even played my Genesis Collection. But the acheivments might give me some motivation.

This is a definite pick up, but I don't think I'll buy it day one, I will probably wait till AFTER Street Fighter, Killzone and Resident Evil.

If you preorder at Amazon you can save a whole $2!!!.

This is actually one of the games I'm looking forward to most in the first half of the year.
