Sony Playstation Home - Gen. Discussion & Info - Open Beta Available Now

LOL he's like.... "damn we were in a lawsuit... shit... what did you want me to say" I wish I was Sony's spokes person... they wouldn't back me into a corner like that.

New more relaxed interview up
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3157977

Guess home has been in development for awhile

"It's been in development for quite a long time. It actually started life on the PS2; it was a 3D lobby for a single multiplayer game and then we thought actually that it might be worth extending out to support more than one game on the PS2. And then we started to come up against some technical limitations of the platform. It couldn't quite do all of the things that we wanted it to do and the user created content was really the key factor that we wanted to include."

Like I said in another post, Sony has been referring to this project for years. The execs were talking about peer-to-peer microtransactions way back in 2004.
New 3 page interview with Phil Harrison about Home.
I really like the trophy room idea... I've been thinking about it, and it'd be cool if you could hop into your friends trophy room whenever you like and seeing all his cool shit he got and his videos or go chill in his room watching his trailers until he gets home from work.

Or the latter, you can make a sweet place for all your friends to come to, show them new trailers you found and pics of a party you all went to, or scenes from a movie you want them to see.

AND when there is like a cool ass trailer for a game coming out, say Uncharted just released a new trailer and your friends never really pay attention to that stuff, itd be cool getting your friends together and showing them all the trailer in your private movie theater. And then just talking about it after or while playing pool at your house.

HOME is a good CHILL out place. Just to relax with your friends or meet new people in the lobby. That's why I dont get why some people HATE home, how can you hate the ability to socialise with people that have the same interests?

OR having a CAG ROOM Were we could all go and talk about Cheap Ass Deals or things on the forums, a virtual forum. And than someone can pull out a video and we all check it out together, and put in our input on what we think about it.

CheapyD and Wombat could drop by and hang out with us for a bit and shit.

COME ON Home is REALLY cool and opens A HELL of alot of amazing opprotunities.
we all know a CAG Home room would just turn into a giant gay sex romp.........
Exactly why it would kick so much ass... or... pound so much ass... ?

I think most people are downplaying home because it is not Live. Home, on its own, is a great idea, but I think most, including myself, would rather see them making efforts to matching Live, rather than taking a different route. Given the choice, I would prefer standardized buddy lists, and better voice chat implementation over Home. I really feel they should've addressed those issues first, before introducing something like Home. With that said, I am really looking forward to Home, I just feel that the priorities are a bit out of order.

I say Sony needs to open its doors to forum based websites with special rooms (for a small fee to the webhost) to have a huge pull on the market.

An official CAG room (not just a regular room named CAG... lame!) would be nice.

That would be amazing. I know Sony will allow for developers to have their own lobbies, but if they made this feature readily available, it would be great for smaller business trying to be heard.

I know that some blog sites are actually working on ideas to work something into Home.

It all comes down to ease, cost, and benifits.

Home, while neat, to me seems more like a novelty than something functional & utilitarian.
It is only "novelty" if you try to make it into some kind of game instead of using it as it is, a 3D chat/community.
That's why I don't get it. People say its annoying having to walk to go see a video, walk to play a game... but you dont even have to use Home if you dont want to.

I think its an amazing idea. You're sitting home, and you're friends are at work or something, you can go to the Lobby and just hang out with other people and than go play a game with one another.
It is only "novelty" if you try to make it into some kind of game instead of using it as it is, a 3D chat/community.
well thats why i see it as a novelty. it doesnt really have a purpose besides being neat. like when youre a kid and you ask for a toy in the check-out isle, you buy it cause youre mildly interested in it. but youre going to get bored w/ it once the novelty wears off since it doesnt really do anything special besides catch your eye.

I wish you haven't put me on your ignore list.

I've brought up alot of points that make Home cool.

PSP being used as a rear view mirror, pointless? Yea. PS3Home pointless? I cant see that being the case...

na im not ignoring any1.

i watched most of the GDC presentation. the only thing i found interesting were LittleBigPlanet and the pool game. the rest was like the sims chat. and i really dont like that format. its way too confusing and hard to keep an actual conversation. bulletin boards are the best forum (no pun intended lol) imo. because most people are time limited.

if im missing anything though, feel free to point it out.

Yea, I can see that.

Its much easier just popping up a forum than walking around a virtual world.

I can see why alot of people are turned off by the idea.

I guess were just gonna have to wait and see how it turns out. I think it has pretty good potential, but who the hell knows how its going to turn out!

Either way, it'll be interesting seeing it evolve.

I have to agree. Home is not really the most effective way of going about this. I still think it will be fun, but, to me, Menu based home would be a lot better. But, considering what PSN is now, Home is a step in the right direction. Also, it's not like its a forced feature. We will still have all options available in menu form.

I don't think it'll be one big clusterfuck like it was portrayed in the presentation. also, there's always voice chat.

In the long run, I think I'll mostly use it for minigames (they could take this idea far with things like poker, boardgames, and sports) and primarily use it to organize groups before playing online. I'll probably get into collecting trophies too--not sure why though. I'm completely apathetic about achievement points, but when they start talking about trophies and awards you can see, I'm all excited about it.

I think what we've seen is a great start. I'm more interested in seeing how they'll refine it and expand on the idea.

I think this is a good example. Live is cool, but hard to always find people to populate your friends list unless you play with them first. Home will be adding another layer to meet and interact with other gamers. Too bad most of them will be 13 and pretending to hump each other. Ah well...

That's not true at all. I'm 58 and I'll be pretending to hump other people.

Yeh, I think we need to back up a bit. You can still use messaging, voice/video chat via the PS3 WITHOUT using Home. You'll still have the buddy list features that are in place now. No one is going to be "forced" to use Home, which by reading some things here, some of you seem to think.

I think the biggest want from people who have used Live is the feature where you can get a hold of a friend no matter what they are doing online. If Sony/Home offers that then I doubt there is any else you can really request. The "standardized buddy list", I think just think is another way of asking for the feature mentioned above.

You can see when your friends are online, and what games they are playing. Just any messages you send won't be recieved until they pop out of that. Once Sony gets things going, we'll see things where a message might be received during gameplay. This is something that Sony didn't have in place for launch, but are said to be working on.

Remove this kind of thing, either saying that it will/won't happen (put it to the side for now), what else is there that they could do to make the online structure better?

Phil Harrion on Porn in Home

"Not content with that, the ThreeSpeech blogger made his point more explicitly, asking whether it'd be possible to upload pornography to your private space, and whether Sony would do anything about the people who "invite people you don't necessarily know" to come and watch it with you. Amazing.

"Well I'm disappointed that you would use those as the first questions," Harrison responded. "I think Home should be used for a much wider and more beneficial scope than that, but I think that people can express their creativity inside Home in a wide variety of ways and it's not necessarily for us to dictate what that should be. However, if somebody feels uncomfortable about an encounter on Home, it's very easy for them to ban that person from their friends list."
So now you know."

I think they should add a XMB that you can open up at any time in any game. Like the Xbox button.

But it is limited, it has different features on it, like it has a Friends section a game invite section and a menu function section. Just like 3 things to select from.

And, I cannot wait to collect all the Assassin Creed trophies. If AC supports trophies im gonna have to go the PS3 version.

WOOOO!!! PORNSTATION 3 BABY!!!! YEEEEAHHHHH!!!!!
What makes trophies so great?

They'll be just as useless as points, even more so.

"Oh, people can look at my trophies I have showcased in my Home!"

Really? Who the fuck is going to do that?

To do that, they would have to sign in to PSN. Then, boot up Home. Then, sign into that. Then, they would either walk, or teleport with their virtual PSP to your Home. Then, you have to be online, signed into Home to let them in to even look at the stupid trophies, that no one cares about and they probably have the same stupid trophy in their Home.

Or maybe then can break into your house or look through the window if you have them in view.
Jesus, clean out your vagina will ya?

Don't make Zew mad. It ain't pretty.

I figure if we can gather up some money and buy a BD burner for him, he'll take a bigger fancy to That Triple. ;)

Supposedly, a HD Loader type thing is on the way.

That Triple might get some play.

If they keep the features they talked about way back when with Home it could be cool. Like I remember reading that you could watch video's that are stored on your friends PS3's. Stuff like that is cool, but as far as gaming goes, in game XMB with features similar with Live is what I want.
How's your girlfriend doing? Still gettin' no play because of her parents 'eh?
Pretty good. Hows your hand doing?

Hehe. Zewone, I usually like you man. You seem to be going on a troll rampage though recently.

Fake images on PS3 stuff is very common that I learned to take everything with a grain of salt until confirmed. I remember everyone believe an image to be real that said "Select Music" at E3. Patrick Seybold (Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media @ SCEA) mentioned he was the one who turned on many of the PS3 consoles at E3 and never saw it.
So, um, what about the people who could give a fuck less about Home?

Hopefully I'll be able to just touch a button and have what I've ''accomplished'' show up instead of loading Home.
Please, don't call this a doll house or try to step into something you aren't too familiar with.
Well, I'm in on the Home beta, and it's the Sims Online. The minigames are boring and trite, the theater irrelevant, I have no interest to decorate my "room," and so on.

It's boring and there's no incentive to go on there period, let alone to view someone else's trophies.

Achievements work b/c I can, from this browser, click on your username, see the last five games you played, and view your gamerscore. I can go into more depth if I choose from this very browser.

Accessibility is the key here, and Sony completely overlooked that aspect in favor of cloaking it in what is essentially a clonky 3D web browser, as well as how they ruined the very marketability of this by trying to not look like copycats (and dropping accomplishment "points").

So, while I'm sure your response is that Kaz and the gang have delayed the release of Home for these very reasons, and that it's going to be awesome at release, blah blah blah. You'll change your answer from your previous post, which was "don't call this a doll house or try to step into something you aren't too familiar with" to "you're not experiencing what Home is supposed to be." I know you're going to try to pull that nonsense, that if people haven't tried Home and dislike it, you'll knock them for it (fair enough), but then tell me that the Home beta isn't representative of Home, so I don't know what I'm talking about.

If this crap is in Home, fine. It needs to be accessible outside of Home, of course, or the difference b/w those who purchase 360 games due to "achievements" won't be narrowed in the slightest.

Home, simply put, sucks. Are you even in the beta? What the hell is there to like about it? You may try to tell me that Home's going to be so different at the time it launches, but (1) that's not true, since it's expected to launch in the next few weeks, and (2) if it becomes as different as it needs to be, it won't look a thing like its current build. It'll be like the difference between Hawkwind and Motorhead.
QFT. It won't be the first time Sony has blatantly copied a competitor. This will most certainly be an inferior version though if all you get are trophies that go in your pretend dollhouse that no one will ever see. There's just something compelling about those stupid Achievement Points.
Home has received several overhauls since TGS, which is why it was delayed. There's no denying the original Home which you all have access to in the beta is very limited. Kaz knew this, wasn't happy with the current state:
Hirai feels the delay of Home will ultimately have a positive effect, as he is not happy with the current working version. He wants to make sure it's the best Sony can deliver to its fans and that's always nice, whether it's truth or spin.

I'll flat out give out my opinion that I'll be surprised if Home comes out anytime soon, because the mod at threespeech (the semi-official Sony blog for Europe) even once said (I'm trying to search for the source) that Home is 6-8 months behind schedule still.

Whether or not you are right, Home SUCKS right now, and Home WILL SUCK in the future. You can claim it's not a doll house, but when the things to be added include special "shirts" my avatar can wear when I beat CoD4 or some shit - then there's no denying that it's going to be a dollhouse.

The only overhaul I've noticed in the beta version is the addition of separation walls in the "arcade" area, the outdoor area was added, and the theater movies changed from Spiderman trailers to a barrage of shitty promos for Midway PSN games.

Old wine in new bottles, in other words.

You didn't answer my question before: are you in the Home beta? I'll get a righteous gutlaugh if some cat with no experience of Home is trying to tell me that my opinion is wrong.

I think we've already confirmed that what was in the beta was changed based on feedback from the people who participated. So I guess we'll have to wait for the final build to see how HOME is. Plus the good thing is that HOME isn't going the same HOME that we're going to get on release day. Even if there some things that people don't like, I do expect HOME to evolve. For right now, I guess people will either be optimistic that HOME will be a nice exerience, or some will be pessimistic and believe that HOME is going to suck.
