It's out right? I think it was supposed to come out the 24th. Has anybody gotten it/played it/cared about it?

I was wondering if it was any good, looks like it has potential.

Looks good. Better graphics on the PSP.
But I'll buy the DS version.

This will probably be my first DS game. Before I have a system :D

I like the controls they gave it on the DS, I'm hoping they implemented them well, I'm sure as hell not going to be the first to get it though, not for $40.

Saw it today at Best Buy, so it's definitely out. I didn't want to take a chance on cold-buying it, though. Someone post something when they get it!

The game is only $40 at EB/Gamestop, $35 everywhere else. I'm going to read reviews before I pick it up.

I'd actually rather have the PSP version since I think it either spans all the Trek timelines or is set in TNG era; whereas the DS version is limited to TOS.
I did not here that DS was TOS only.
If so, that sucks.
I like TOS era and all, but most gamers are more familiar with TNG era and there is simply more to TNG era than TOS (it's fleshed out more).

If I ever decide to get a PSP, it will be the first game I get (assuming it's good).
Looks true. Damnit.
http://startrek.bethsoft.com/news/pressrelease_102606.html

Also looks like both DS, PSP are TOS only.

Must have been thinking of Encouters which spans all series.
That website says that both the DS and PSP version are set in the original series. And previews from other websites only show ships from the original series. I think that the only difference between the two is that the DS version will have touch-screen elements, and that the PSP version will have improved visuals.

I think this is what confused me. I'm pretty sure a month or two ago it said something about TNG timeline, and as you can see it has images of the Enterprise-E, Defiant, and Voyager.

Saw those as well. Wonder if they are from Star Trek: Encounters.

I'll probably pick it up anyway. Once I get my bonus reward zone certs, and a GGC.

Not a trekkie but is it that important that it's only TOS? I'm more interested in the gameplay. It looks like it could be a good game. If someone gets it, please let us know if it's any good.

I don't think this is going to be a title with gameplay that blows you out of the water, I wouldn't be getting it for that. I would get it to pilot the Defiant, Cardassian, and TNG Era Klingon/Romulan ships...I would get fun just out of that without it being heavy on the gameplay.

I hope that's not the case. I think that would be a short lived game because gameplay and sometimes storyline is what keeps me coming back for more.

It has potential to have good gameplay from what I've read but most games sound good prior to release. Hopefully it ends up being a good one.
I play Starfleet Command 3 for that. :) This would just be something for the road, but SFC is my favorite Trek game of all time.
Apparently it's made by the same dev team as the Starfleet Command games, so hopefully it's good. I'm still waiting for reviews and impressions before I decide.

TOS only is lame, I was hoping for the not-so-model-like ships of the later series. It could still be fun though, I won't pick it up for full price, (or even ggc price) maybe for $20-25.

I think everyone is waiting for someone else to get it. I'm surprised it hasn't been reviewed by anyone. How long does it take to review it? Maybe it's a really long game lmao.

Funny that people think TOS-only is a negative. Rick Berman and Brannon Braga raped the Star Trek universe.

I hope this turns out to be good!

I like the original series tons. NexGen is decent, but I personally disliked anything that came after that.

Waiting for some reviews.

It's been out for 3-4 days. How many games fail to get even 1 review in the first half-week? Has anyone found any forums where people have commented about it? It is for sale right?

Sometimes companies don't send out a review copy far enough in advance, which is usually an indicator that the game isn't too good or has major bugs.

Also, I gotta think that maybe it's just not a priority for them; The Star Trek franchise has fallen on some very hard times.

Well on gamespot the users have rated the game a 9.4 out of 12 votes...but no one had bothered to do a review.

Here is what yahoo had to say about the PSP version.

Bethesda brings a decent Star Trek experience to game systems for the first time in ages with this shooter.

Star Trek fans have been cursed not only with cancellations and some missteps on TV and the big screen, but with a load of rather terrible games. Bethesda Softworks, fresh from the success of Oblivion, is trying to change the losing streak. On the PSP, the company's weapon is Star Trek: Tactical Assault. The name is slightly misleading, since this isn't a turn-based strategy game played on tiles. Instead it's a real-time space combat sim, and it's also much better than you'd expect.

You'll take command of a series of starships, either in a Federation campaign or an unlockable Klingon series of missions. Acceleration and turning are simple matters of hitting the d-pad, but you'll have to cycle up to red alert to raise weapons (shields go up at yellow alert) and then wait for them to charge before firing.

The combat is a matter of circling enemy ships and eating away at their shields. Phasers charge quickly and are plentiful, but are weak at anything less than point-blank range. The reliable photon torpedo is great, but not if you miss, which is very possible when firing while turning. But this is Star Trek, after all, and fighting isn't always the only way. Diplomacy can get you far.

For instance, in one of the first missions you'll be called to assist a mining system being plagued by pirates. You can fly in and destroy the pirates, no problem. Or you can hail them and have a conversation that leads to you escorting them back to the mining system, where the corrupt governor will then take reprisals against your command. That's the Star Trek experience in a nutshell, and Tactics gets it right most of the time.

A couple of limitations keep our enthusiasm from going into overdrive. First, collisions between ships aren't factored into damage calculations. That's a disappointment, seeing as how colliding starships have been put to good use in Trek before. But the controls and velocity physics are such that players would be ramming themselves to death all the time, necessitating the negation of collision damage.

Worse, then, is that the game takes place essentially in 2D space. You can't dive or fly along any axis, instead being limited only to turning left and right. Since so much of the game has you endlessly circling other ships looking for an opening, it would be a big advantage to be able to fly in more than two dimensions. You'll also find that the relative size of objects isn't on target, with capital ships being far too large against some of the game's planets.

But it is the PSP, after all, and in general Star Trek looks and sounds better than it has in recent console incarnations. The graphics are a little jagged, but the ships look great and the interface is well designed. And the sound is excellent, from the sweeping symphonic score to the spot-on weapon systems. In total, the blend is more than Trek fans have been able to boast in a long time, and that an entertaining title in the Trek universe exists for the PSP is still a difficult fact to grasp.

Sounds ok by me...No 3D flight is a little lame, but other than that sounds like an ok game. Worth picking up at maybe a $19.99 price tag.

the last Star Trek game I played... TOS was all the Star Trek there was!

Still a fun game to this day. Dont forget to pull back on the joystick to fire your photon torps. ;)

Thats what Im talkin about! I had the home version for the 2600. The control scheme was soo complex for the time that the game came with a joystick overlay that showed what each directional, plus the button did.
Damn, am I old?
Dunno, but I am.

That game was classic arcade gaming. First few levels were easy, then it immediately got impossible. Ah, the good ol' days.

I think I might buy this game tomorrow for DS, it sounds pretty cool and I'm enough of a fan to wholly enjoy it.
I thought you were going to buy it 2fast and then give us a review :)

Letting us caggers down man :)
I just never got around too it/thought better of it. I think I'm going to ask for it for Christmas since there are a ton of other games I want coming out this month.

There are some decent user reviews on Gamespot though.

It is alot of fun. I've only previously played starfleet command 2 but its a similar kind of game, just a little faster paced. Also it's important to keep in mind that it takes a few missions to get really good and there are some tough missions. Regardless of the difficulty and the occasional slow point this game has got me hooked, I keep coming back to my ds to try that mission again or just to play a quick skirmish.
