Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void

I actually may pass on Starcraft 2 :cold:

I've had the beta since the first wave in February (I went to Blizzcon just for that key), and I haven't really touched it in the past month or so. I was fluctuating in the top 10 of my platinum division for a while but to be honest I'm simply not enjoying the game all that much, and it's taken a lot of guts to admit that to myself.

I played the original for the past 11 years both casually and competitively and I was really optimistic abut SC2, and I still think it's a fine RTS -- but for some reason it just bores me so much.

I can't really pinpoint why either.

Who knows, maybe if I switch to Terran I'll regain interest.

I haven't touched the SC2 beta in some time either, but I'm not 100% sure why. I think part of it's because I don't want to be burned out for the single-player campaign, and another part is because I don't like online multiplayer to begin with (I'm primarily getting SC2 for said single-player).

Oh, and I did see how my Wacom works in the SC2 beta's menus, and it's just like a mouse (though maybe a little laggy on the clicks... might have to tweak my tablet settings). Haven't tried playing a match with it, though.

I feel like when I play SC2 I just do the same things over and over and there's not much variability. With that said, I'm constantly trying new things to somehow make it interesting. I'm liking infestors for the Zerg and I was playing with mid-late game ultralisk drops, since 2/3 hits just decimate peon lines, and you don't really need upgrades... but of course, that requires getting to mid-late game.

I was messing with nukes but because it's so gas intensive it's hard to get a couple ghosts out with 2 nukes to do some damage, and have an army at the same time.

BCs with marines are pretty sick against Protoss, get a Raven with PDD and they can't do much of anything... but the trouble is surviving the Immortal rush and then getting the BCs out.

The matchup I hate the most is TvT. The early game is either an infantry timing push, with or without tanks... or mass air. If someone lives after that, I expect the game to take 40 minutes since there's so much to do and it's so easy to tech switch.

Is there a reason why when i play 2v2 with a buddy and AI, i can only set the AI to very easy? We couldn't figure out why.

Yea, kind of burnt out by SC2 already. I'm enjoying it much more than SC1, but I guess there is really no point in playing right now due to all the resets. And playing 1v1 after 1v1 is not really that fun. And it's hard finding a consistent 2v2 partner.

They are either too lazy to program the AI or they want you to play against other people. Those were the reasons floating around.

SC2 > SC1.

I said it... Even with the units missing that they pulled out of multiplayer to sell us with the expansions, the game balance feels about right and the modernized features make it so much more fun to play.

When Brood War came out, and Big Game Hunters existed as a 'real' map, it was all anyone would play! Finding a blizzard map that wasn't BGH was really hard. Because most people just played those money maps, the real strategy and utility in a lot of the units was lost - it came down to who could make the most battleships or dragoons.. not who used their units the best. Even now, I can't log into SC1 to play a game on something unique and fun - it's all BGH or crappy money maps.

The matchmaking in SC2 gives the game a lot more diversity - you get to play many different maps that can bring different strategies because the game itself decides which maps people are paired up on.

I also think that the matchmaking improvements has evened out the learning curve. When I first got into starcraft, it was a few months before brood wars came out. I didn't know what I was doing, and I got stomped hard when I tried to play online - putting 'new players' in a game's subject just mean opportunistic pricks would join your game and cheap-you to death. While I was learning to play well, I didn't have much fun, or success. The game itself was enjoyable, but the online was frustrating. Eventually I learned and did better, but the experience of learning was really uneven.. very sour to start - so much so I almost stopped playing before I learned how to play.

I had a somewhat similar skill situation in SC2 when I started the beta. I jumped in during the third or fourth wave, and didn't know much of anything about the units or changed gameplay... but because I was paired with other people in that same skill level, I very seldom got stomped - most games I played were close, with some back and forth. which helped me to learn the game while still having fun taking a loss. I can honestly say that some of the games I've lost were the most fun i've played in this beta; SC1 never had that... accessibility.

Finally, the modernized features, which are to be expected in 2010, make playing games more about your strategy, and less about babysitting your peons. The queuing improvements, AI improvements, and idle peon meters take a lot of the chore that the original had out of the game. The ability to auto-queue the peons to minerals or gas is also much needed.. in SC1, the efficiency needed for a solid base build required so much attention.. from the crazy selection/movement of your starting peons to efficiently sending them to minerals right after they popped out... that level of required attention was work in SC1.. the match didn't get fun until after the initial tedium was taken care of.

SC2 is a lot smoother in that regard.. the build is still important, but the reflex and mad clicking at the start isn't required for success - select all peons, send to minerals, create peon, set rally point on minerals - it can't be much more efficient than that.

So.. yeah... Thats my rant. For those burned out, or not feeling the same magic as SC1, to each their own. I was worried that Activision was going to ruin Starcraft 2.. and in some ways, they're sure trying to milk it... but from playing it, the Blizzard team on this game is doing a damn good job. I've had more fun playing the Starcraft 2 beta than I've had playing any other RTS made in the last decade.

Hey all,
If anyone still has an extra beta code, I would love to have it. I'd be willing to give up my bacon for that beta key. PM please. Thanks!
I can honestly say that some of the games I've lost were the most fun i've played in this beta
Last night I lost a game when my partner dropped out right at the very beginning. The second the game started, i got the disconnect message.. so i had two bases to manage. I was against a race-selected tos and terran. I was terran and protoss also. I knew I had no chance to win, so I decided to have some fun.

Peon Rush! I built up 12 SCVs and 12 probes, and ran at one of the bases. I certainly surprised them! I didn't know where I was going, so I hit the tos first. I took out his single pylon, then killed all his probes and blew up his nexus. The enemy terran was smart, and ended up sending all his SCVs at me while I was fighting the probes - even so, I won the battle!

One down!

I went after the terran, who left himself with 2-3 SCVs and a half built base. He hadn't closed off his entrance because I caught him so early, but he had managed to build the best possible unit to counter me - a hellion. I managed to micro it down to 5 hit points.. but he got a second one out and it was over.

If not for that damn hellion, I would have won that game; even so, losing it was still a lot of fun.

2v2 Plat Rank 2 with my friend now, both random all the way. At this stage of the game its gotten kinda stale because its rush or be rushed. Unfortunately we keep running into the same staple players who play TT and double early reaper rush, or ZT that go 8Rax and 6pool. This pretty much forces any toss play style into a turtle mode since zealots cant compare to early lings and reapers. I don't know how people continue to play the same race and do the same moves over and over again. We got hit by said ZT the first time and lost. 2 games later we were placed with the same guys and i recognized the names. Needless to say since we knew what they were doing we pretty much out-macroed them given their investment into that set-up.

Funniest thing happened tonight though. We ended up as double zerg so we double 10pooled someone. This guy rages and questions why we are "noob ling rushing" when its "only beta", and then tries to tell us how to have fun. Throw in some insults here and there from him and suddenly we have the 2 of them raging against each other. Classic.

I have been trying to get into this game and I'm still not really sure what to think. I really want it for the single player side but will check out the multiplayer from time to time. As of now it just seems like it is a rush atleast in the 2v2. A rush that I never win. I have been playing under novice however I think that means nothing and the games last 10 minutes tops. I am starting to think what someone told me years ago about the first one is going to end up being the case with the second one. It sucks that really good players would stick around and play against new players or players that are not that good just for a win loss record. But what can you do.

I'm still up in the air with this but that is because I really want the single player part of the game. It does seem to be fun for me but I suck at it when it comes to the multiplayer.

Because of how the matchmaking works, you don't get paired with someone who is way better than you all that often. You typically get matched with other people within your skill range.

Lets pretend that someone intentionally botches their placement matches... That person gets seeded to copper, and starts winning.

They don't STAY in copper. they get moved up to bronze. if they keep winning there, they get moved to silver.. and so on until the user is playing against people in his own skill range anyway.
I think i've been matched up against quite a few people in higher rankk than myself.
That should be the exception, not the rule.

I dont play 2v2 very often, but for me, I cant win unless I rush or do an early timing push. I cant play as fast late into the game as most because I play on a laptop. Need both hands to move around and click fast because I dont have a normal mouse + cant use hotkeys = cant keep up after 10+ minutes or so.

I can beat some pretty good people with just normal rushing and timing strategies. This being my first RTS that I have actually played more than a few games in I think I am doing pretty good. Started in Copper cause I didnt know what I was doing, moved up to Bronze, then just moved up to Silver yesterday. I am beating Golds/Plats on a consistent basis, and I don't even scout. I can win probably ~70% of my games just using Terran and doing a timing push with "The Ball". Proxy Zealot rushing works a high percentage of the time as well.

Heh. I love it when it looks like people are using Day9's vocabulary.

To all the people posting asking about extra codes: so far, the trend has been, if we have them to spare, we will post about them. In other words, please stop asking, keep an eagle-eye on this thread, and be patient ;)

(And to the thread regulars: sorry if it seems like I'm butting in here ^^; Just tired of seeing all the requests lately.)

Your butting in is much appreciated.

Placed silver. Did really well against fellow Protoss, but not-so-well against Terran. Only played one Zerg, and he was my very first practice game. I won, but he admitted he had no idea what the fuck he was doing, and was just teching to everything he could simply so he could see what it was.

Which... is a bit more feasible than it sounds, 'cause those fucking practice maps throw rocks up everywhere.

Sorry about all of this, I asked for a code a few days ago and it seems to have started a steady stream of spam on this thread.

Hm. The ascent through silver is rather rapid. Disappointed by the lack of Zerg and the frequent Bnet crashes, though.

I'll sift back through the thread later to add names to my friend list. I use the name Tamburlaine.marlowe because if you don't have an English degree then fuck you you're not good enough to play with me.

And they told me my English degree would only qualify me to wait tables. Money well spent Debt well allocated, I say.
Nay, I don't want to hear about anything that isn't real or posted by the actual person on Facebook. I use it purely for IRL social reasons.
it's not like you have to use it. I say yay, because then I don't have to ask everyone I know what their bnet email address is

I'd probably give it a try for the sole purpose of easily adding friends. I just better not end up seeing "Friend A just beat friend B with a zergling rush kekeke, share the news!"

I know I won't but as Khaos said I don't want tons of newsfeed garbage.

Who has edit rights on the OP?

We really should add everyone's names to that for ease of new people adding the CAGs.

Once again, I'm BattleChickn.Dakkonn

This morning I played 3-4 matches and they were all against Zerg.

I think Zerg is too good right now, but no one has figured it out yet because of the mechanics. Once they get that out of the way, holy crap...

Aye, I was thinking that myself. I'll be able to edit it for a while, but I'm gone in a couple weeks...
