Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Going to pick up either Railroad Tycoon 2 or RRT 3. Any thoughts on 2 vs 3? I am leaning towards 2 for the slightly cheaper price, graphical style and higher reviews but thought id ask here first for actual gamer opinions.

Figured the last day would be repeats. Not bad, but, once again, nadda for me. Only thing I'd consider would be NWN2 but I have the disc version of the original and MoB.

Now that it's over, I'd say 2010's sale was a resounding success for me. Finally grabbed the Witcher and Dragon Age for ridiculously good prices. Considering I was very tempted to bite on the Witcher last year at $13.60, getting it this year for $5 is down right criminal. I did spend a bit more this year compared to last though:

2009-2010
Prey - $2.25
Osmos - $2.00
Trine - $5.00
Crysis Max Ed. - $13.60
Braid - $2.50
--------
$25.35

2010-2011
F.E.A.R. Complete Pack - $10.00
Dragon Age: Origins Ult Ed. - $25.00
Star Wars: KotOR - $2.50
--------
$42.50
The one thing I laugh about this whole event... people claiming PC gaming is so much more expensive.

When's the last time you saw hit titles getting 50% or more within a year on any other platform? For $60, people bank 100s or hours of quality titles. You might get 3~4 retail releases with $60 and a good sale for a console.

Perspective gained +1. :D
You make up for it in the hardware side. :D

At least for me it does. My rig is easily worth twice as much as a 360 and it's not even top of the line. Especially since a decent video card can cost as much as a slim 360.

I plan on upgrading to a core i7 next which will require a new mobo and RAM. I don't even want to start thinking about how much that's going to cost me.

Alright! Here's what I got!

Amnesia: The Dark Descent - $4.80
Indie Beat Pack - $5
Indie Fright Pack - $5
Indie Future Pack - $5
The Witcher - $5
Star Wars: KOTOR - $2.50
Overlord - $.75
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale - $6.xx

Total: ~$34 for 20 games

Still Considering:

Neverwinter Nights 2 - $10
Elven Legacy - $2.50

That's such an amazingly good deal! I can't believe it...Also, this is the first year I have bought anything from Steam ever (except for PvZ and Torchlight late last year), so I now have a good set of games to play. Woo!
Er... put down the blunt. You said dailies could be repeated for lower prices. That has never happened and it didn't happen today so, whatever.
Yes that's happened before

So unless you're new to Steam sales and what's happened during them you should know that already

Can anyone let me know how Dead Space PC is? I have it on PS3 but I play my PC a lot more often than my PS3 now that I have a high end PC.

I don't know why this guy is so dead-set on his point even though multiple people have told him he's wrong.

Here's just one instance. Trine. It has happened more than this though.

Nope. Not really.

Because their hardware is so incredibly old, any sub-$100 video card will generally outperform a console. If you are paying more, then you are getting higher FPS and better textures to balance out the extra cost. If you are buying the bleeding edge, you are vastly overpaying for just a few more FPS. The sweet spot for PC gaming is much lower and always has been.

And anyone just now bragging about how PC games are cheaper than consoles hasn't been paying attention for the last....10 years or so. Steam has nothing to do with it. PC games start out cheaper and drop much faster in price. Always have. (For the record, I love my console and two portables as much as my PC!)

You also have to realize, though, that PCs are also used for things other than gaming, whereas a 360 or PS3 is mainly gaming/media entertainment. Thus, you'd most likely have a PC even if you weren't gaming. This means being a PC gamer will cost probably around $500 extra for a decent PC, which acts as your "console". So a 360/PS3 gamer will pay ~$300-$400 for their console, and a PC gamer will pay ~$500 for their console of choice. $100 isn't a huge difference after you take into account the much lower prices for games.

One last time I ask for advice,

I do not want any of the daily deals, but, I have created a brief list of games I want that are non-daily deals.

Sid Meier's Pirates! - Does this game still hold up as a fun play for $2.50?

Super Meat Boy - I decided after the daily deal that I wanted it, but, is it worth the $7.50? Do you think it will go on sale that cheap again anytime soon? Or not likely until the summer sale? I think I want to buy it.

Square Logic: Everyday Genius - I added this one to the list, but am already pretty sure I will get it as it is pretty much endless puzzles for $1.50.

I would like to thank everyone for giving me advice and opinions throughout the sale, and Eastx for the thread maintenance and work.

steam did it again. we love giving them our money. im glad its a repeat day so i dont have to keep buying. happy new year happy gaming

Your links don't work. They just redirect to this page. And I'm not sure what instances you're citing, but if one of them was Torchlight from Holiday Sale '09 I already told the guy who said that he was wrong in this post:

Super Meat Boy is an excellent game. I bought it for 10 dollars on Xbox 360 and I still feel I got a deal. It's well worth the 7.50.
So does everyone here have Nation Red already?
It's a great top-down wave-based zombie shooter. Plenty of guns and a powerup tree to keep things interesting. Several modes, including co-op as well.
Killing Floor versus Left 4 Dead 2 versus Team Fortress 2?
You should make it a point to get all three, since they are all great experiences, but since you said you can only get one, I suggest you research them more to find out which more suits your playing style since they are all three so different.
Any thoughts on Painkiller?
All you really need is the original Painkiller by People Can Fly. Painkiller: Battle out of Hell is also by PCF and is mostly good. The rest were cheap cash-ins by the publishers and various mod groups.

If you like shooters, the original game is extremely solid and the levels are so varied that there's tremendous value there. There are tons of hidden secrets and tarot card powerups to add a bit of strategy.
Can anyone let me know how Dead Space PC is? I have it on PS3 but I play my PC a lot more often than my PS3 now that I have a high end PC.
I played through Dead Space on the PC, its a fantastic game, and works well with key/mouse, but if you have a USB Xbox controller, I believe you can use that too.

Whats Grotesque Tactics like? Final Fantasy Tactics?

Okay done at last. My final haul is:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - $6.79
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale - $6.80
AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity - $2.50
Indie Fright Pack - $4.99
Dead Space - $6.80
Bioshock (Gifted to a friend for his birthday) - $4.99

Total Price - $32.87

Thank you Steam!

i was hoping they would bring back all the deals since i missed out on some =( but did pick up some good games (crysis pack, sniper elite, brothers in arms earned in blood, commando collection)

I believe he means that in a single sale cycle, say holiday sale 2010, if a game goes on sale as a daily deal, the price of the game will not go LOWER than the daily deal price in that sale. In that sense, I agree with him. Obviously in the future, or maybe a past sale, the price could be cheaper. In your example, was Trine $7.50 for a daily deal, and then dropped to $5 later in the sale? In that case, he and I would be incorrect. I've been searching on google and going through previous cases to see if it was a daily deal at $7.50, but I don't believe it was. I've seen daily deals increase in price (last year Gothic Bundle right before I bought it x.x), but I don't recall one dropping in price. Maybe I just didnt care for those games.

Edit: Post #3572 in the thread you gave says that $7.49 was just the sales price, not a daily deal. This site: http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/6367/steam-holiday-sale-eleventh-day-deals/ says that Trine was $5 for a daily deal. Your example is invalid.

Anyways, thirding any opinions for Grotesque Tactics.

Well I just pointed out that Plants vs. Zombies was $4 during the daily deal and is 3.99 now. It's only a penny, but it counts.

I've played the crap out of the NES, Sega and emulated versions of Pirates and loved them. I bought the new-ish PC version a few years back and the gameplay is still great, especially for $2.50. I wouldn't call the gameplay deep, but it can be really satisfying in its openess. You can attack, loot, trade or ally however you want. Have a fleet of small fast ships or a couple behemoths with guns to the gills. I definitely recommend it.

Thanks for the opinion!

Yes! Get Sid Meier's Pirates. It has great gameplay and the cartoony graphics save it from 'aging graphics'. Very much worth the 2.50.

Anyone tried Ceville or Emerald City Confidential? Really into point and click adventure games and these are $2.50 each. They've been on my radar for a while but I'd like to hear from people who've played either one.

I told myself not to spend over $10 today on any last minute purchases and I (kind of succeeded) at $10.97. Hey it's less than $11!

Picked up the Indie Brain Pack that I've been eyeballing all sale (got the Kids Pack last night and it's FUN!) Also got Sniper Elite, Everyday Genius (enjoyed the demo), and grabbed Grotesque Tactics after realizing it was originally $20 so I figured 'Eff it! It's "only" $3'.

MEGA THANKS to eastx for maintaining the thread and even helping me with a question I had while in the Steam Client!

Thanks again. To anyone that has bought Super Meat Boy, playing SMB on PC with a USB 360 controller would be the same as the 360 version, correct? The reason I ask is I played the demo on 360 and loved it, but would want to be sure it is the same game with a controller on pc.

Going for 2 indie packs and maybe that $1 Vegas Tycoon type game. I spent most of my money buying gifts for others, so I couldn't get much for myself. Honestly, I'm glad about that. See you all during the next sale!

Alright, looks like I'm finally done with this sale. No longer will my wallet cower in fear when 10:00AM rolls around and I reach for my credit card. It can at last rest secure, free from the tyranny of Steam.

Until Tuesday.

Looking at the reviews for Grotesque Tactics, it looks somewhat interesting, but I'm going to pass at this price. So, my steam spending comes to an end for the sale (unless someone tempts me with something I missed), with the final tally (I like reading other people's so I thought I'd share mine too) being:

Winterbottom - $0.49
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - $6.79
Titan Quest Gold (Titan Quest + Immortal Throne) - $4.99
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - $2.49
Overlord Complete Pack (Overlord, Overlord: Raising Hell, Overlord II) - $3
Civ IV Complete - $6.24
Frozenbyte Collection (Trine, Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds: Survivor) - $5.99
Plants vs Zombies - $3.99

Total $33.98

I don't think any of these were actually on my wish list before the sale, but they look like some fun games for a good price.
Those S.T.A.L.K.E.R games any good? opinions plaes
It's easily worth twice that so I say go for it. I played through the xbox version and still had no problem double dipping on steam for the different exclusive characters and upcoming level editor. The game has a ton of levels, secrets and unlockabes, not to mention free DLC, incredible music and countless references to old school games (SFII intro to Forest put a huge smile on my face). If you grew up in the 8 or 16 bit era and still enjoy those type of games, this is an absolute must buy. I would strongly recommend tracking down a controller with a good dpad before you play though.

I'm disappointed TF2 didn't make the encore. I wanted to bite on Friday, but I was holding out for an Orange Box deal since I also needed Eps 1 + 2. Then the episodes were like 1.19 a piece yesterday so I had to jump on them. How often does TF2 hit the $5 price point?
