Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Some good stuff in there if you don't want to search all over the Steam store.

Was Metro 2033 ever on sale as a daily deal? I know it was a weekend or Thanksgiving deal before the Holiday sale and it was a lot cheaper. I regret not picking it up then but I figured it would be cheaper or at least the same price during the holiday sale.

I am proud of myself this year. I spent way less than $100 which was my limit and I got almost all the games I wanted. I just kept telling myself I have way too many games to play, there is always next year lol. Not like last year thank god....

The thread was actually linked here a couple of days ago. Good stuff.

Metro was $10 on 12/29
was thinking about pickin up trine, this makes it easier.
before i buy, has trine been on any of the daily sales? or been cheaper than $5?
it was $4 during the summer sale
The fact that they call the first Divinity (Divine Divinity) a 'tepid Diablo clone' makes me seriously question their ability to judge a game.
I played through Divine Divinity and it was more or less an inspiration from Diablo. Sure there were some differences and tweaks but hardly alot to make it a big distinctive experience from the flagship of action RPG Diablo.

For those who had experience with the Dragon Knight Saga game, how has it appealed to you? After the horrible experience of Risen, I was wary of Western RPG (unless it is from Bioware)

Might as well get the Frozenbyte Collection for that money. 99 cents more and you get Trine + Shadowgrounds + Shadowgrounds: Survivor.
Metro was $10 on 12/29
Wow I was waiting for that deal, makes me wonder what I was doing that day, Is there somewhere where I can see what was on sale that day.

Also Does anyone know If all the daily sales from 21/2 are gonna be back tomorrow since its the last day, cause I missed out on a lot.

Highly unlikely. It's probably going to be just a selection of games equal to the number we already get daily. And since we had a recap after the first week I wouldn't be shocked if it's a recap of the second week now.
so what's the catch? why would THQ offer the entire game (original + expansions) for free?
The online has microtransactions :/

Can I assume that the Indie Packs will still be on sale tomorrow? And what India Packs would everyone recommend? I'm looking at the Fright Pack, Smarts Pack, and 2D Pack.

Also, are the CoH expansions worth it at their sale prices?

Do I need to play Half-Life to enjoy Half-Life 2? Is it super super worth it at this price? I have L4D2 so it would be 85% off.

How do I get the Half Life stuff to show up for 85% off? It only shows for 75% off even in cart and I have L4D and L4D2.

Thanks for the links. Picking up the Indie Kids pack for $5. I paid $10 for Max and the Magic Marker on Wiiware and never got around to Toki tori, both Crayon and Delve Deeper also look good. I'll delete the pony sim but that's still $5 for 4 games. Madness.

I can see now why people on the PS blog are always complaining about how the PS store sales suck compared to Steam. Thanks Valve.

PS - I have been using Steam for years but just upgraded to Win 7 and a new HDD (500gig up from 30) so can actually make use of Steam now without space constraints.

Make sure you're logged in. Preferably, make you purchase through the Steam app and not through the website. It'll give you the discount.

zeno clash looks weird. im bummed mafia 2 is so cheap i spent the full 50 on it, but i noticed the dlc is cheap $2.50 ive wanted to play joes adventure but its not worth the 10 bucks like jimmy's vendetta, its super basic.

No, i hate to say but it would be pretty hard to play through HL1 nowdays.. doesn't hold up that great.

HL2 & Episodes are MUST plays even today.. nothing should hold you back.. esp at those prices.

Steam killed my credit card. It won't let me get anything on it anymore, apparently the anti-theft protection kicked in with all the uncharacteristic purchases over the last couple weeks. Good thing today is the last day of the sale and I was trying to gift something, or I'd be a lot more upset.

Since my own last update, I grabbed The Ball, Greed Corps, and Amnesia as gifts, 'cause I wasn't 100% sure and didn't have time to ponder it. Received a gift of squarelogic, which I racked up some achievements in whilst watching TV, but I'm not really enjoying that one yet.

Almost grabbed the jedi knight pack since the JK2 multiplayer was so great, but didn't bother.

As for today, MoH is too expensive for me, Mafia 2 actually sounds good but it looks like a huge game, and I've got hundreds of hours of gaming waiting for me, so I can afford to wait.

I've enjoyed CoH in the past, so I'm considering getting some of those, although if I can convince myself the DRM is a hassle, that'd save a few bucks.

I'm probably in for AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! though.
I noticed for COH you need internet connection to play (DRM)

Might bite on Commandos Collection.
I missed that tiny little line of text down there... glad it was only $2.50.

It happened to me earlier for trying to gift something too. Both PayPal and Visa failed for me - then I tried to gift to a different email address. For some reason THAT worked.
Metro was $10 on 12/29
???!!! I dont remember seeing it. That was last Wednesday so I might have been on the road that whole day and missed it.......

My credit card didn't lock up, however, I did receive TWO phone calls asking me about suspicious purchases from Valve Software. I was cool with that though, because if it was fraud I guess they would have been looking out for me.

Thanks so much. I don't know if I should jump on the episodes. It would be unfortunate if I do want them later.

I really want to get Counter-Strike too though. But I don't even know if I'd play it all that much. People on there are way too good huh? Day of Defeat might be a better choice?

What? Half-Life 1 doesn't hold up well? I played HL1 two summers ago and Opposing Force last summer and they're both perfectly fine. The models are blocky and the textures aren't that high-rez, but it still has a very clean and bearable look at 1920x1200. HL1's pacing is actually better than that of HL2's -- imo -- due to the lack of unnecessary physics puzzles and a godawful buggy. Half-life 1 is still a great game today, and "too old" simply doesn't apply to it.

Finally got the Indie Kids Pack, I was waiting until the last day of the sale for new items to grab it.
Every single game in that pack is solid, I've wanted all 5 games for a while now and to grab them at a buck each is great

Half life is a better game than half life 2, in my opinion. The pacing is way better, as another person said, and the large amount of time spent alone is absolutely crucial to the mood of the game. There is also more strategy to the gunfighting, wherein hl2 pushes you forward while half life presents you with arenas for combat and lets you take your time to sort it out. it also has more memorable enemies than hl2, namely the marines and, best (read: scares) of all, the ninja assassins.

Also, opposing force is the best expansion pack ever made.
I missed that tiny little line of text down there... glad it was only $2.50.
Company of Heroes doesn't require internet to play single player. You can LAN w/o internet also.

Good God.. it said "internet required" right below the requirement for multiplayer (of course, how else can you play with other people online?) and some people automatically assume that THQ has the same DRM "Permanent Internet Requirement" like Ubisuck.

This is not to bash anyone.. I just want to clear up the misunderstanding and misinformation. COH is a beautiful well-crafted game. It has no DRM (asides from Steam) At this price, it is a steal!!!! :)

Half Life holds up fine -- although I remember playing Atari 2600 titles so I don't overly scrutinize graphical shortcomings as long as game play is good. There's an HD texture/model pack you can install to polish it up a little bit. If you're really that put off you can get HL: Source and download the HL: Source Enhanced mod (unofficial) that makes it look as good as HL2 for the most part. Note that HL: Source does not work with the two expansions so if you want to play Opposing Force and Blue Shift you need the original Half-Life.
???!!! I dont remember seeing it. That was last Wednesday so I might have been on the road that whole day and missed it.......
I have also missed it, It must have been hidden or something, because I'm pretty sure I would have remembered seeing it somehow.
So in general, Half Life 1 anthology is not recommended (games too old?)
I can recommend it :)

Haven't played them in a couple years, but the graphics aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I actually enjoy the late 90's look of it. The game is still epic.

Great set of games for $2 and change.
is today the last day?
Nope, 1 more day... but they all might be repeat deals tomorrow.

I have Half Life: Source. I want to get Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Is there any reason to get the anthology, which includes the original version of HL? I doubt I will play Team Fortress. It is $1.26 more to get the anthology vs. just the two expansions.

You can't play Opposing Force or Blue Shift without the original Half-Life (non source version).

It's was and is great game no doubt.. it just doesn't hold up that well IMO.

Sure, I could boot it up once every couple of years just for nostalgia and get a kick out of it for a little while.. but I've had extensive experiences with the game that occurred nearly 15 years ago now.. a new comer to the game won't have that nostalgic attitude about it... which for most 14-15 yr old games thats why people still buy.. nostalgia factor.

Anyone newcomer to the franchise I'd have to suggest digging in to HL2-Ep2 then going to HL1 if you feel like you must but hey, it's a $1.49, you certainly can't loose..
