Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Updated the OP because I was tired of seeing the same deals. I'm not sure if I want to get Left 4 Dead 2 now, or wait for it to be bundled with the original and get both for $10...

People say there's no reason to have the first one now.

Find and get in on a 4-pack deal!

gaaahhhhh.... doesn't look like much action on the L4D pack/trade forum, and haven't heard back from anyone who posted here earlier. Anybody looking for a 4th party for a 4 pack?
Really debating on getting the F.E.A.R. Collection. Anyone want to convince me to buy? Talk me into saving my money?
They're great games, though they each have their problems. The first game is a great PC shooter that has you go through a LOT of cubicles and office space. I just finished it again a few months back and I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if I did take breaks to get away from the office. (Haha.) I think it does a good job of giving you value.

The second game has a lot of environments, but it is also consolized a bit compared to the first game. I think the story of this game leans toward the, "Jump the shark" at times for me and they struggle to get a new protagonist in place that will be different from the first game's.

I'd say the two games are easily worth the money they're asking. I played them to get my mind right for FEAR 3 (I will never accept it as F3AR).

This is a really great summation of the games. The only thing you left out are a lot of behind you and jump out of the closet type of scares, and superb audio in the second game. If you like the atmosphere of The Ring/Ringu and solid, though not revolutionary, FPS games, it's a really good deal.

No you don't man, L4D2 is not a demanding game.

They are planning to port the original campaigns over the L4D2, but I still think for a brand new player who's never played them before, it's better to start with L4D1. While the gameplay is definitely improved in L4D2 - especially the maps - it's almost a little too crazy with all the monsters, items and weapons; L4D1 has this simpler, more arcade experience.

What do you guys think they are going to charge for Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 after Dungeon Siege 3 goes on sale? I am tempted to PO DS3 to get DS1 and 2 for free....but at the same time something tells me they wont charge more then $10 each for DS1&2. Id rather just pay $10 and pick up DS1 and then buy 2 and 3 when they go on sale if thats the case.

L4D2 pretty much killed L4D when they decided to release it 1 year after...you should only need to get L4D2.

I pre-ordered L4D2 (and got L4D) with it for like $65 or something...I only played through all the campaigns a few times to kill the time before L4D2 came out.

I have a question for you guys since I am a steam n00b. I am going to purchase a gaming laptop soon (alienware m14x) and want to buy l4d2 since it's on sale today. My questions are:

1) can I create a steam account today on my netbook and purchase l4d2 but choose not to download the game? I read the FAQ and know that you can download the games you purchase on steam to any computer but I don't think my poor little netbook could handle that kind of duty.

2) do you think l4d2 will be on sale (possibly cheaper?) again during this "summer sale" I keep hearing about?

Thanks for any help!

Just a heads up, I heard the Steam version of 1 and 2 have no multiplayer. If that matters to you, you can grab a cheap copy of 1 on Amazon pretty easy. 2 is a different story though, prices on that are nuts.

1) Yes you can do that.

2) Possibly, but likely it won't be that big of a difference in price, maybe it'll be $5

1) You can purchase it and download it whenever you want from any computer that you log in with your Steam account. (Most of the games that I've purchased haven't even been downloaded/installed yet)

2) Valve's games go on sale quite a bit compared to others but I'm not sure how much cheaper L4D2 will go, at $6.80 it's a great deal if you plan on playing it in the next couple of months, otherwise it might not go on sale this low till the Christmas sale. (I'm just guessing though)

Cool! Thanks for the help!

I hadn't heard of this game, and my first reaction was to ignore, but there are some strong reviews and the theme is compelling, so I decided to get it.

Actually dell makes an awesome laptop.
Its sadly just a dell name now instead of an independent brand(like ford and lincoln but not like ford an mazda....get it?). NOT knocking at all as I have an xps 17its great and I love it but the original alienware guys started Origin PC after selling the alienware brand to dell. Alienware is now what the XPS line used to be. Xps is now a not quite gaming line. Studio is mid level and inspirion is the entry level.

Probably TMI....

I know people generally like to stay away from Dell (now includes Alienware), HP, etc...I was skeptical too, but I got a really good deal for the Dell XPS 15 in my sig ($710). It's been working great.
Fantastic speakers to top it off.

No, it can't max out games, but it can pretty much handle any game thrown at it at native res (1366x768) and it's not my main gaming rig anyways.
It's acceptable if I'm going on a trip somewhere and/or need to kill time on the go...when I'm at home, I have my desktop for gaming.

Going from the Inspiron to the M11x is a huge change. It's a fantastic machine. My only regret is that I wish I had bought the R2 for the optimus technology. I'm going nuts buying tons of Steam games. Cannot wait for the summer sale!

yea this is the cheapest its ever been. it was for $7.50 before (after being divided up in a 4-pack). I feel bad that I bought it when it was for $7.50, and NEVER played it.

You know what funny? It's getting so close to an expected Steam Summer Sale that even a great deal like 75% off for MNC makes me hesitant. (what if it become 80% discounted later) lol

Do you really care that much about 75c?
Do you really care that much about 75c?
Someone really needs to invent a "sarcasm detector app" for the internet. I'm assuming that was a rhetorical question as I was clearly joking on a game forum dedicated to cheap asses.

Monday Night Combat is quite a fun game to play. I tried it during the free weekend, and I think for $3.75 it's well worth it. I won't be buying it though because I already have a huge backlog on games to play!
I just tried the A.R.E.S. demo and I won't buy it. Any game that blatently rips off music from Transformers the Movie I won't buy. Way too close to be a coincidence.

:D I'm getting banned by the game maker's Youtube channels for posting this. Does anyone else see the resemblance?

Should I buy MNC if I already own it for Xbox?
Is there any advantage to one or the other other than keyboard and mouse, which I don't really like since I am on my laptop.

They update the PC version a lot more than the 360 version.

here's a site where they talk about the updates

To be honest, not really. The rising notes sound a bit similar, but everything else sounds pretty different to me. I don't think there's enough there to say with any merit that the melody was stolen from Transformers.

EDIT: Man, I was happy when I learned I could separate my games into categories, and then confused and saddened when I discovered I couldn't put a single game in multiple categories. I'd love to be able to make my own tags and sort on those. That would be so useful. So many other programs have that now, it's baffling Steam doesn't.
