Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Wow Killing Floor runs on shitty hardware.

In for the KF pack. Man if they only had a 2 or 4 pack of that, I would get some friends in on it.

Beware on buying GTA IV on PC. It's a bug ridden POS port, but for $10, it might be worth a shot.
I'm surprised when they go on sale a couple of weeks later, yes, because I figured they wouldn't be dickish enough to put it on sale for much less such a short time later. I was wrong. It's a pretty big "fuck you" to anyone who bought from the daily deal.

In the grand scheme of things, it's only a few bucks so it's not the end of the world. But seriously, it's kind of douchey.
You crack me up. Damn that douchey company Valve, putting their AAA games on sale for under $10 all the time! Those games that they're still supporting with free DLC and maps after 1.5 years! Darn them! :D

You might have expected this... L4D2 was $5 at the Thanksgiving sale, and during the Winter sale. I'm surprised it's not $3.75 today.
Glad I waited on Jamestown, though I was kinda hoping it would drop more than ~$1. :(
I hoped it would have dropped lower, but this is about what I expected. The game came out less than a month ago. $5 is a no brainer for this gem.

Has anyone tried Jamestown on an arcade stick? Just curious.

Also interested in KF, Armored Princess and Atom Zombie Smasher. Could be my most expensive day yet.

I got GTA IV just to try the IcEnhancer and ENB series mods. They look amazing.

Dagnabbit! Apparently we had the same idea.

Kings Bounty - with all packs for $4.99? Ack... I am a sucker for these type of games.

I love King Arthur the RPG - is this similar?

L4D2 is an AWESOME price.... How does it handle on computer, or should I just get the console version? I don't care about online....

It's my understanding that they patched all that up. It was problematic at first, but better now. They did some things with the graphics engine that really take the load off, so it performs fine on modern machines.

I own it, but I haven't played it. Perhaps someone can confirm.

One warning for sure is that the GTA 4 Download is like 14 GB. Ouch.
I've been wanting to pick up Killing Floor. Are the DLC packs worth the extra 2.50?
The DLC are simply character skin packs. I bought them just to support the developer. They update with so much free content it's not even funny.
Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 showing $4.99 each or $7.50 for double pack.
Go with the double pack! Worth it, trust me! Both pretty awesome games.

The new GTAs are great, but I had to crack my copy to get them to work. The SecuROM kept causing it to crash. Aside from that, I'd wholly recommend them if you've got a beefy computer.

Got two quick questions..

I have Left 4 Dead 2 on steam and L4D1 just went on sale for like £3.. is it worth getting? Theres a few missions from the 1 in 2 so is it worth me actually getting the original? Will I be gaining much?

Also, The Killing floor is also £3 (or £5 for a version with loads of extra DLC) worth getting also? Whats it like?

Cheers!

Kings Bounty - with all packs for $6.99? Ack... I am a sucker for these type of games.

Should I get GTA 4 at that price...
I have a sealed copy of GTA 4 Complete for PS3 which I'll probably sell off if I get the PC version.

ahah, funny how we posted it at the same time. The only thing holding me back is finding out if my computer can even run it with the mod.

first time i've seen and heard about killing floor. from the video, looks fun. anyone have it that can shed some light? thanks!!!

Oh they did patch it. I bought it at launch and stopped playing it because it was so bug ridden. Well that's good to hear and for $10 it's a steal.

Wow, fantastic. My gfx card went dead so I run on shitty intel graphics until I upgrade my machine (system is 3 years old now and I would rather wait and do a whole system upgrade because of old hardware not really being supported anymore). I am buying games I can play now or games cheap enough that I feel the wont be any more cheaper by the end of the year or if so by a dollar or something.

Hmm so I can't find any real video reviews of armored princess (seems like its a popular euro thing but not big here? I dunno). Not sure if I should get all 3, or just AP, or none. :p
Has anyone tried Jamestown on an arcade stick? Just curious.

I have played it with my TE 360 stick. Works great.

It plays just like you are back in the arcade ;)...

I've played it twice after picking up last week through a trade. If I would have to offer comparisons, it's a combination of Left 4 Dead and CoD Zombies. You have waves of infected each round, and after each round, you're able to go to a store to buy weapons with the money you've gathered. It's a blast with friends and the community, from what I could tell, was very very active.

Damn, I just bought Atom Zombie Smasher a few days ago for 50% off, now its 70%. I learned too late to only buy Daily Deals till the last day.

Direct2Drive has Civ 5 for $20 and Fallout 3 GOTY for $9.85 today.

Civ 5 requires Steam; Fallout 3 GOTY from D2D is not steam-activate-able.

The Civ 5 DLC is not on sale.

Not really like King Arthur, that reminds me more of the Total War games.

King's Bounty is like a cross between Heroes of Might and Magic and a console tactical RPG like Final Fantasy Tactics. It's like HOMM in battle, but outside of battle it lacks the world building element (more jrpg like with exploration and quests).

I recommend it strongly. King's Bounty is probably my favorite game that I've bought on Steam in the last year. Super long too, both The Legend and Armored Princess will take about 80 hours apiece to complete. Addictive gameplay

Killing Floor is an absolute must buy at that price. I've never had more fun, or put more time into any other shooter on steam. It may not be as pretty as Left 4 Dead/2, but it has excellent gameplay and re-playability. I'd spring for the extra DLC if I didn't already have the game, adds a little variety but nothing that effects gameplay.

Is the GTA IV pack worth it for me? I paid $60 for it on release for xbox. I only played the main storyline with some side missions. Never played the expansions. However I only have a dual core E8400 and I heard I probably can't max it minus AA with my E8400 and 4870 since it uses quad cores efficiently. I just want to use my native res 1440x900 with highest graphical settings with AA turned off, but I have a feeling I won't. Worth $10?
the question is, if I only want one of the King's Bouty games, which one to get?
probably crossworlds. It's armored princess with slight tweaks, a couple shorter quests and the editor.
Getting armored princess and crossworlds is rather a waste. But the first game is good enough that the $7 pack is the best bet.
It's like homm, but it isn't. There are no turns, no resource gathering, no weekly creature growth. Just your character, and monsters to recruit. I put a few hundred hours in homm 1-3,5 and King's bounty was jarring at first. But after an hour, the differences from the homm no longer felt like flaws and it played great (though the endgame battles can feel a little tedious).

King's Bounty, as a series, pre-dates Heroes of Might & Magic although the IP is in new hands now.

King's Bounty The Legend is the first in this new series and is generally more silly and lighthearted.

Armored Princess is the sequel which refines some of the mechanics and loses some of the silliness but is pretty much more of the same with a baby dragon at your side and flying unicorns and boats. (ok maybe it's just as silly now that I wrote that out)

Crossworlds is an expansion for Armored Princess and thus requires you to own the Steam version of Armored Princess and it basically tweaks the original campaign while adding two new ones which are less substantial but fun. Oh and it has an editor.

If I had to select just one it'd be The Legend but it wins only barely.

There's no need to be condescending. Valve is not exempt from criticism because they do other good things. Activision donates money to a fund for veterans, but that doesn't mean I can't call out their bullshit either. And if you're going to go by putting AAA games on sale and still supporting them, then EA must be pretty great too, since I picked up BF:BC2 for under $10 months ago and it's been getting free maps since release too.

I wouldn't have expected this since I'm new to Steam, this is my first major sale, and I have not researched nor committed to memory past sales that I was not a part of, so expecting that is bizarre. The only reason I haven't been burned by the first rule of Steam sales (wait for the daily deals) is because of everything I read just as the sale was starting.

I'm not seeing anything worth buying today, besides GTA4, L4D1+2, and Arkham Asylum, which I already have + love. Jamestown looks great, but I feel like I can hold off on it for now, and Sims 3 will be cheaper soon enough.

Nothing for me today, but I would recommend Batman, LFD2, and Far Cry pack to anyone that doesnt have them. Far Cry 1 is amazing. Far Cry 2 does have issues, but for the price it is worth it in my opinion.
