Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Still debating King's Bounty. It looks like a game I would enjoy but I have too many games to play at the moment. I think I'll just wait for now. But it is a really good sale though...

Only bought Jamestown today cuz I love me a good up shumps. I was thinking about Killing floor but I don't even like L4D all that much so meh. Nothing for me today.

Congrats to everyone who picked up Jamestown today.

You just scored one of the best shmups ever released on PC for $5 ;)

Enjoy it! :D

I feel like Final Form missed out on a few more sales by not participating in the summer gold ticket event. I would have loved to earn a tough ticket for playing this game...
If I'm looking a this correctly Jamestown only has local co-op correct?
Yep, just couch co-op... up to 4 players.

Co-op is great fun. Solo is just as, if not more rewarding though.

If you're a big L4D fan, do NOT get Killing Floor. It just doesn't feel right going from one to the other. I'm very sad I spent $5 on it. So so hurt because I could've used that $5 for something eeeelse~~~~~

It's not a bad game. I just don't like it. Sluggish, I hate the menus so much, the monsters are kind of annoying. It's just not a good match with me. And I put emphasis on the menus just because it's not a difficult thing to make attractive. Presenting a menu in a nice graphical way can't be that hard right?

The only reason I downloaded is because some of the users on here were talking about how many updates it gets, it's strong community, and developer support. I forgot to even look up gameplay :\
Dragon Age Utlimate Edition, $25 last winter. Still haven't played it. $10 during the summer. Rage.
didn't buy it during the winter sale, so ended up getting ps3 version of dragon age 2. Rage.
Ok so I did like parts of it but sigh not a fan of many of the changes.

Picked up Jamestown today, passing on kings bounty again due to something about it bugging me when I tried the demo during the winter sale, maybe will give it a shot sometime but not now. Maybe next time on atom zombie smasher.
I couldn't resist GTA IV. I'll just work a half hour of OT sometime this week lol. I needed it to finish out my gta collection. I now have every gta on steam. And OUCH, 32 gigs for both to install. Sucks for you Uverse people who are capped at 200 gb a month :p
Sucks even worse for DSL people who are capped at 150GB. :(
Oh well, at least I'm staying at my sister's soon (she has comcast) so I'll just download everything I've bought while I'm there.

I am going to say that L4D appeals to a very different type of gamer than Killing Floor. Im gonna say this and I mean not to offend anyone. Killing Floor is like a Counter Strike, tactical game, go slow, aim for the head and work together. L4D is more like a Modern Warfare 2, you can work as a team on the big stuff but it doesn't punish you as hard for going off by yourself. In my experience KF is Rainbow Six, and L4D is Halo, two sides of the same coin and it depends on the player. I like both but they appeal to different moods.

L4D punishes you pretty hard for going off by yourself, since if any special infected grabs you, you're fucked.

Yeah Killing Floor seems brutal if you stray from teammates. The only problem is that all the people I (tried) to play with today ran off in different directions and we all get slaughtered... very frustrating!

That's not Killing Floor, that's every team multiplayer game ever.

I bought left for dead 2 last winter sale, but haven't played it yet. Is it worth picking up the first one? I am more of a solo player would I get more enjoyment out of the first?

If so where do I get in on a 4 pack?

The best 2 campaigns are ported, Dead Air and No Mercy. Dead Air isn't done yet but I'd say unless you loved L4D2 and just need some more L4D in your life, you'll be fine sticking to 2.

PM BitLooter, he's got a 4 pack going right now that I'm in. At least I think its still going.

someone sell me on king's bounty. more specifically, whether i should buy the platinum or just get the legend. i already played the demo for armored princess and liked it a lot, but i have more RPGs in my backlog than i can count (note: hyperbole) so i'm not sure i need to get the entire pack. on the other hand, i will kick myself if i end up just buying the legend and then end up double-dipping to get the sequel later.

also want to pick up killing floor and jamestown. would someone like to give me some dollars? much obliged.

The first one was great when it first came out. It was fresh, new, and exciting. However, since the release of L4D2, the majority of the population shifted with the release. Even if you're only going to play the single-player, it still isn't worth it since Valve is working on porting all of the campaigns from L4D1 to L4D2. Once that's done, there's no real reason to even have L4D1 installed since you'll have all of L4D1 + L4D2 maps in one nice package.

If you're interested in the story between the two, I can give you a run-down of it. :D

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I'm a huge L4D fan, I played it so much on the 360 my disc has crack in the hub. When I got a computer fast enough to run L4D2 I didn't hesitate to pick it up. Then I got Killing Floor as well, and I also love it. They're two different kinds of games; L4D when I want something longer and more tactical, KF for when I just want to kill zombies for half an hour. You may not like one or the other, but I wouldn't say you'll hate one just because you like the other.

Try the group buy thread for getting in on a four-pack. I don't know if I have a slot open or not; if that other guy doesn't get back to me by tomorrow, I'll be posting it in there, assuming you can't find another pack before then.
I like Killing Floor and L4D2. I don't see what's so odd about that...
Nothing odd about that as all I like them as well.

Couldn't resist.
Bit on GTA Complete :(

Spent $ on Steam sale: ~$43

Not much else could go on sale right? :'(

Getting Terraria for sure, but I'm hoping it'll go on sale (along with the 4 pack) :D

Only picked up Batman: AA GOTY and Sims 3 for today after much hand-wringing. Jamestown, King's Bounty and GTA IV Complete all look intriguing, but there's other future deals (and the "after the last daily, before the sale ends" items) that I still need to budget for, so those get to wait.

I will say that reading here, GAF, and other places has been invaluable for making me look at smaller games I wouldn't have otherwise. Beat Hazard, Wings of Prey, Recettear, and others I've decided to check out after reading a lot of positive impressions and liked them. I'd have completely passed over or dismissed them otherwise. Been a great sale so far, monetary damage aside.

I just played for about an hour, and I take back everything I said. After reading Dragonbane's post:
Killing Floor is like a Counter Strike, tactical game, go slow, aim for the head and work together. L4D is more like a Modern Warfare 2, you can work as a team on the big stuff but it doesn't punish you as hard for going off by yourself.
I went ahead and gave it another shot. And it truly is more about patience as opposed to L4D2. Team work is essential. And although you are punished in L4D, it's not as brutal as it is in KF. I'm liking it more and more now. One thing that drives me nuts is the recoil on the guns. It's pretty ridiculous!

First day with no purchases from the sale.
Would get Sims 3 if it were cheaper.
Already got Batman AA on the PS3
Kings Bounty just doesn't look like my type
Already got the L4Ds and GTA:IV (but not EFLC)
Kiling Floor ... I got the whole Stalker series and L4D games, I think I'm good on zombies lmao

I'd get the Gothic pack but the graphics are pretty dated and I just doubt I'd get around to playing it. Good deal, but it'll sit - i know it. I got some Elder Scrolls IV Shivering Isles to complete as it is.

Kinda disapointed EFLC wasn't put on sale equivalent to the GTA:Complete pricing. :whistle2:/ Valve ignored it or something? They usually put other stuff into an equivalent discount price to purchase them separate.

With direct progression from the Steam CDN numbers posted earlier, two future deal graphics are up.

If you liked AP's demo you'll like the Legend. $7 for both games and the second's expansion is a great price. Although even if you only get The Legend for $3 you can still get AP and the expansion for like $5 or $6 later so you still aren't going to be losing a huge amount of money -- and these games are on sale for a steep discount at every major sale like clockwork.

Thanks for the response, looks like this will be the first day not buying anything. Kinda surprised I've only spent $16 on the sale so far. Seems like I am stocking up on DLC and indie games more than anything.

Nice work. Quake pack is iffy for me and would be a lot more likely if Steam had Quake 4. I still can't believe it isn't there.
Are you kidding? Kiting all day is the easiest thing in the world in KF.
It really is... if you know the monsters/maps. Otherwise you do what I did today....

*loads up new map*

PEW PEW, PEW PEW! DIE DIE DIE!

*backs up*

*hits corner*

Oh.... fuck.

Just caved and picked up Batman: AA. I already own it on Xbox, but I am thinking about trading it in... Definitely have spent too much during this sale.

All the reviews on Jamestown are sterling and it looks like a grand time- but I'd rather wait until it drops to a lower price. $5 compared to t$2.50 isn't that big of a deal, but my backlog is large enough to keep me entertained. I can wait a few months for it to drop in price.

Chaos Theory is a fun little game I stumbled across: http://store.steampowered.com/app/16500/?snr=1_4_4__13 $1.70

I like it because I don't always have a time to sit down to play for hours at times- A baby is death to free time. So games that I can play for 15-20 mins in a sitting are perfect for my lifestyle.

Bytheway, I appreciate all the pearls in this thread.

Same here. It's the couch co-op that killed it for me.
Have the download speeds been slow for anyone?
During the day mostly. I sometimes just get straight cut off and have to manually start the download again. At night (right now) I get top speeds.

Only thing I've gotten so far is Civ IV complete for $9.99.

Is it true that Civ V was around $15 dollars a few days ago?! Think they will bring that one back?

Picked up:

Left 4 Dead Double Pack
Jamestown
King's Bounty
Atom Zombie Smasher
King's Bounty
Killing Floor Platinum Edition
Far Cry Double Pack

Picked up Far Cry 2 and Klling floor. Held myself back on the sims, figured it would be on sale again in the future (christmas hopfully) for cheaper. Can't wait to see what command and conquer 4 drops down to.

I picked up Jamestown and gave it go for about an hour with a wired Xbox Controller. I love it! Great gameplay, music, graphics. I found myself especially hooked with the "Challenge Stages" that appeared after a few levels. Highly recommended...

An excellent "Steam" deal, I think: get one of your UK friends/proxies to grab you the Steam-activatable Empire: Total War for $6.30:
http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/177/7542/product/Buy-Empire:-Total-War-Download
(It was $7.50 on Steam in March, I think this is the cheapest yet?)

It's funny, my top three download bargains this past week have been $5 Bad Company 2, $11 Civ V and ~$6 Empire: Total War, despite the Steam summer sale. Although to be fair, I've bought seven or eight Steam thingies too. :p

Definitely. I love Steamworks games...I got Empire and Napoleon GOTY for £6.00 ($10 USD) back in February from D2D UK. No need for a proxy.

got the Far Cry 2 Fortunes Edition. i still plan on beating far cry 1 before i start this though. about half way through now maybe farther.
