Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Here's some breaking news if you want Dawn of War 2 Retribution: Just $7.49 on Amazon thats half off the half off price on Steam! I just got it on Amazon, retail key activated on steam no problem at all.

Good price, but I haven't even beat the first yet (stopped before the last mission around five months ago) and if I ever get back to that, I have Chaos to go through.

I think I might have to pass on this.
Sorry to quote myself, but I'd really love some opinions and this thread is moving fast. Thanks!
Personally I prefer Vampire Bloodlines, but it's not for everyone. You will have to patch it up with some unofficial patches to get it into proper working order, but if you like VtM or vampires in general I'd highly recommend it. Best vampire RPG ever.

I found GTA itself boring, but there are some cool mods for it. It's more definitely more mainstream than VtM though.

Not that anyone cares, but since people are doing it:

Day 1 - $5.90 - Bit Trip Beat, AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAA
Day 2 - $0.00 - Nope.avi
Day 3 - $11.67 - Darksiders, Bioshock 2, Magicka Vietnam
Day 4 - $17.69 - Dragon Age: Origins, War for Cybertron
Day 5 - $9.72 - New Vegas DLC's, MnB Fire and Sword
Day 6 - $4.49 - AI War complete
Day 7 - $0.00 - Zilch
Day 8 - $5.00 - 2 copies of Sanctum
Day 9 - $10.19 - FO3 GotY
Day 10 - $7.48 - Terraria, X3: TC
Day 11 - $1.80 - Penny Arcade 2 pack

--------------------

Total: $73.76 - I probably messed up the math, come at me pedants.

Most I've spent on a sale yet. Finally had a fair amount of disposable income around one of these.

EDIT: As an aside for anyone curious, here's how I feel about the ones I've gotten to play.

Darksiders: Awesome awesome awesome. Totally worth the $5 I paid. It's a shame this style of beat-em-up doesn't make it to the PC, it does wonderfully. The graphics leave a bit to be desired though.

AAAAAaaaAAAAaaAAAAaaa: Surprisingly good. Quirky sense of humor, decently challenging, cool visuals.

Bit.Trip.Beat: I'm iffy on this one. Not a whole lot of content, not a whole lot of replayability. The visuals and music are interesting, and the game is pretty tough.

Transformers WFC: As average as average can get. Easily the best Transformers game I've played, but that's not saying much.

AI War: Gyarrrr complicated! I'll have to give this one more time.

I like seeing what other people bought since it gives me a little insight into other tastes and sometimes entice me to look at other games I wouldn't on my own.
Yay amazon to the rescue for a DOW2 retribution dl!
Amen! :)

I'll see if I like this DOW2: Retribution.
If I do, I'll have to look for DOW2: Gold - which is likely.
See, I did try DOW2 SP Demo a while back - yeah, it rocked...and I'm normally not into RTS's.

Here's my haul on the big sale. I am still slightly considering Magicka but I think I'll sit out because I have so much more to play.

Penny Arcade Combo Pack $1.80
Lead & Gold $1.13
Oblivion GOTY $8.50
Borderlands GOTY $5.23
Bioshock $4.99
Bioshock 2 $3.75
Torchlight $2.99
Defense Grid $2.49
DG Map Pack $0.94
Flight Control HD $1.25
Trine $1.99
Fallout NV: Dead Money $2.99

Killing Floor Characters $1.47
Garry's Mod + CS: Source $6.24
Fallout 3 GOTY $10.19
Terraria $1.88
2 Terraria gifts for friends $3.76
---------------------------------------------------
Grand total: $72.04
---------------------------------------------------
So that's about 18 games, DLC for 5 games, a gift for 2 friends

Summer Camp Stuff:
15 Tickets (so far...)

Alien Breed 2: Assault
TF2 Summer Shades
Portal 2 Goo Gear Snorkles
Killing Floor Steampunk Pack
MNC Summer Gear

I will probably earn ~6 more tickets. Any suggestions? I don't own any of the other games. What DLC is especially good and for a great game. I was thinking the Magicka one...considering buying the game. Any thoughts/suggestions?
Off-topic: Why the hell is avast blocking a trojan horse virus when I refresh this page? Anybody else getting this?
Avast recently got an update that made it super sensitive. In fact, it's been stopping a lot of Steam games from being installed. There's been talk of it over on the Steam forums.

My haul this sale. Forgive me for being lazy about the format, it's a straight copy (with a little editing) from my Transactions list.

Guild Wars: Trilogy

$5.74Purchase
King Arthur Collection, Beat Hazard - Ultra

$7.48Purchase
Defense Grid: The Awakening, Tropico 3 Gold

Total:
$52.05

Pretty decent. I probably won't even get to most of these games by the Winter sale through. Looking through my wishlist, there are a few games I can still pick up, but I'd rather wait for a bigger discount on most of them.

Recommended Stuff for today:

Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition

Fallout New Vegas (it'll be cheaper, but if you've completed Fallout 3 and are dieing to play it, this is a decent price).

Just Cause 2 - Great price for the amount of gameplay

Sanctum - insane price for a decent game

Borderlands

I don't even want to total how much I've spent so far on this steam sale. I didn't mean to go over about $30, but I know I've gifted at least $10. Plus I'm about to spend even more money on steam, probably $20 - $30 more.
Has anyone played Jamestown yet? If so, how is it?
Great game if you like shumps. Art style is really good and so far its been really fun. You should buy it!

Terraria- $1.88

Total = $65.18

In my cart staring at me: Two Worlds 2 and both Fallout New Vegas DLCs

I actually stayed under my budget this time :D!

I'm proud of myself.

Jamestown was the highlight of this sale for me. Such a great game, less than a month old, for 50% off.

2nd highlight would have to be The Longest Journey. I can't wait to relive this great adventure game. Been over a decade since I've played it.

The only impulse buy would have to be Defense Grid. The prize DLC enticed me to grab this game for $2.50. I am not a big fan of TD, but this game was really well done. One of the more fun summer achievements to acquire.

Finally picked up Chime. I've heard great things.

My only regret would be picking up Doc Clock. It was only $1.25, and I have played it for about 2 hours... so I don't feel cheated or anything. I am almost finished with it, and some of the puzzles are clever, but the interface is quite tricky to navigate and the physics engine could use some work. Not a terrible game, but not a very good one either.

Zen Bound 2 is awesome for $1. Really unique puzzle game. There is nothing else like it (that I have seen).

Tidalis is most likely my favorite puzzle game on steam. I was hoping it would get a deeper discount for you guys, but even at $5 it is a great game if you are into those kind of games.

Blood Money shouldn't have been missed at that price. I picked it up this past winter for the same. I have always loved the Hitman series and this one is the best of them all.

The classic Oddworld pack is a fucking STEAL! If you don't have a PSX with both of these classics, do yourself a favor and pick them up for under $2. You could even grab the Oddbox for a little over $5. I can't recommend these games highly enough. The only reason to pass these up is if you can't stand older 2D graphics.

I am considering The Whispered World and Oddworld Strangers Wrath before the day is over.

The Assassin's Creed games are staring at me for a second time. What is the better idea; skip it and wait, buy the 3-pack, or just get the 2nd one given I played the first on 360 already.

Also, I can play Mass Effect 2 and the Fallout games quite nice on my computer, would I have any issues with the Assassin's Creed games, don't care about maxed out graphics.

Total for the sale:

Oblivion Game of the Year Deluxe - $8.50
Torchlight - $2.99
Serious Sam HD - $2.99
L4D2 - $3.75
Terraria - $1.83
P.A.M. - $2.08
------------------------------
Total - $22.14

Prizes Redeemed:
Alien Breed 2
Monday Night Combat DLC
TF2 Shades
Serious Sam DLC

Have enough for 1 or 2 more items...what do you guys recommend? I don't have any of the other games.

Also, I'm pretty new to Steam and have only a few friends...feel free to add me! m3talst0rm

Same, I am curious if I should now pick up DOW2: Gold for 20 bucks to have all three. ~$27.50 for all three would probably be pretty good...

Any opinions? Just Retribution, or get 'em all?

Alright since none of these games were a daily deal, what do you think of these games?

Syberia
Syberia 2
Myst
Anomaly Warzone Earth
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (I already own it on xbox but might buy it again)

Might as well toss in my haul for the sale:

Terraria
Borderlands GOTY
Oblivion GOTY Deluxe
Magicka + Magicka: Vietnam
Frozen Synapse
STALKER: CoP
Beat Hazard Complete
Killing Floor
Sanctum
Audiosurf
Fallout 3: GOTY

Total: $56.45 - I'm really really happy with my haul, considering I nabbed FO3, Oblivion, and Borderlands together for sub $60, I feel like everything else is gravy.

Best game of the sale I purchased: Frozen Synapse. The level of strategy and the polish of the game are great - everyone should buy it (remember the price of the game is for TWO copies - so find a friend to split it!

In my cart waiting for a Yea or Nea (going to aim for a combined purchase of about $10, so 3-5 games) input is HIGHLY APPRECIATED:

Mawesome Pack
Zen Bound 2
Chime
Toki Tori
VVVVVV
Lume
Nation Red
Everyday Shooter
Eufloria
Faerie Solitaire
Tiny Bang Story
The Polynomial
Capsized
i-Fluid
AaAaaAA!!
Anomaly Warzone Earth
Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood

and of course - mulling Vampire: Bloodlines.

Decisions, decisions.

My haul:

Torchlight - $2.99

Yep, that's all. Almost bought Dragon Age: Origins, Jamestown, and Terraria, but DA:O I probably wouldn't play for awhile and by then it'd be cheaper. I figure I'd lose interest in Jamestown quickly and it will probably drop. Nearly bought Terraria but the price went up before I did.

Mawesome Pack - Own it on the 360. It's a simple little game, but fun to play through. Definitely recommend it at 2.99.

VVVVVV - Buy this. Play the demo if you're not convinced. Then buy this.

Everyday Shooter - Have this on the PS3. Twin stick shooter with a great guitar soundtrack. There's around eight levels, each with awesome music and a different combo mechanic that said music goes along with. Then there's the great soundtrack it has.

There's a great logic game that I got hooked on during the last sale called Everyday Genius: SquareLogic. It's a weird but awesome mix of sudoku and math problems. It starts out pretty easy, but gets harder and harder over its thousands (over 20,000) of puzzles, and has both achievements and cloud support. It's normally $9.99, on sale for 50% off ($4.99) 'til the end of the sale:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/32150

Definitely try the free demo!
So do you people play games or collect games?
I ask that question to myself quite often. It appears I collect them for one simple reason:

I need to have a ton of games on hand in the event that I become independently wealthy, can quit my job, and have more freetime than I know what do to with myself. Because obviously, if that happened, I wouldn't be able to buy games since they'd all be full price and my mind doesn't always comprehend paying MSRP - even if I was filthy rich..
I noticed some people ragging on GAF and I think there if a big difference in the communities.

The CAG community is more interested in saving money in the context of the games they've heard of, or at the very least, are publicized to them, rather being of the mind to try anything at least once. Especially if there is money involved. They would rather spend cash on a sure thing instead of throwing it at something they have never heard of.

The community over at GAF are fans of gaming in general. It seems to be varied enough that people are willing to try anything and everything thrown their way at least once and they don't seem to be scared to spend their cash. If you look at their main page, they have a picture thread dedicated just to how much people splurge on a daily basis, regardless of cost.
Dude, we get it. You're hip and cool. The rest of CAG is just a cesspool of Call of Duty-buying losers who are slaves to the major publishers. But, you know, the whole judgement-casting thing is so played out. When we need a messiah to lead us into the gaming promised land, we'll let you know.
In all seriousness, I'm not trying to pick a fight. It's just that your tone in your posts comes across as condescending. I'm sure you're a swell guy and all, but your enthusiasm may be getting the better of you. I'm sure a lot of us have purchased a ton of smaller publisher games. We just don't always talk about it.

Anyways, here's my haul for the sale
Toki Tori $ 1.24 Bought for the ticket, but it's fun
Tell Tale Complete Pack $ 49.99 Promised myself I would buy it next time it was on sale
Longest Journey/Dreamfall Pack $ 6.24 I've longed to play these classics
Bit.Trip.Beat
$ 2.50 Thought I'd try it out and at least get a ticket
Meridian 4 Complete Pack $ 34.99 Wanted Scratches, and the Still Life and Syberia games, so what the heck, why not buy a complete pack?
Beat Hazard Ultra $ 1.24 Love Beat Hazard, so upgrading was not a problem
Eternity's Child $ 1.00 Looks cool, and it's cheap
Time Gentlemen, Please!/Ben There, Dan That $ 1.24 Love this style of game (see also: Tell Tale pack, etc)
Rush $ 1.24 Tried the demo because of the ticket, found myself playing through all of the available levels. Easy purchase)
Terraria $ 2.49 Wanted to see what the fuss was about

Prizes
Alien Breed 2
Killing Floor DLC
Zombie Driver DLC
Winter Voices DLC (don't have the game yet, but I want to try it)
Beat Hazard DLC

Total $ 102.17

Still want to buy the Fallout Classics Pack and the Broken Sword Collection, but I've probably spent enough already.
Why is Knights of the Old Republic 2 not available for download anywhere? I really don't want to pay 19.99 for it at a local store.
I've always hoped Steam would add that game, I love the KOTOR series. Last I heard KOTOR 2 runs quite poorly on the newer operating systems though. Also I was really hoping they would drop the price for the Last Stand DLC for Dawn of War 2 but they didn't :(

Recettear
Railworks
The Heroes Pack
Hamiltons Great Adventure (traded a extra copy of Darksiders for it)
Civilization 5 (bought at Gamersgate for $11)
Shogun 2 (traded 500m isk in Eve for lol)
Magicka Vietnam/DLC
Transformers War for Cybertron
Mount & Blade With Fire & Sword

Frozen Synapse (group buy)
King Arthur Druids DLC

Not bad.

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciated. I think I'm going to try VtM:B. I just can't see myself getting to GTA any time before it goes on sale again, so I'm going to wait on that one. I'd rather try something new I think. That's probably the best thing about these sales is that it's enabled me to get a bunch of games I wouldn't have otherwise because the price is so low. I'm only sad I missed out on the amazing indie bundles from the holiday sale. $5 for Recettear vs. $5 for Recettear and 4 other games. Nuts. Ah well, at least now that I have a Steam account I can look forward to more sales like that in the future.

I' might post a damage report later. It's not going to be pretty. My initial limit died very quickly. On the plus side, I've gotten a lot, and I'll be able to better pace myself next time. I hope.

Xbox 360 controller, wired or wireless with the adapter. Most games these days have support for it out of the box.

Seconded. It works with most games with no additional config needed, and it's a damn solid controller.

Is there a way to use a PS3 controller on PC without buying any extra doodads? I don't have a 360 (or controller), so that doesn't quite work for me. I'm assuming something like Lara Croft will be a lot better with a controller, but I'm not sure if it's possible.
