what other games are better than half life or portal? so far we have

1) homefront the revolution

i will add painkiller:black edition
God, this would be like almost the entire Steam catalog. It's be easier to list games worse than Half Life and Portal. I nominate Axyos, just barely though.

I disagree. Axyos mixes fps and moba while HL is just FPS. 2 genres > 1 genre. You can make an argument Portal is maybe on par w/Axyos (puzzle + fps genres) but I'd still say Axyos is better.

You probably already found out, but you know there's a skill that allows you to carry an extra primary weapon? Of course, when I discovered this I didn't have enough skill points left to expand on that skill tree, but they say gear and weapons transfer across new characters so I might make a new one with the extra weapon and auto revive if I can afford it.
Yeah, I made a second guy with that skill. The self-revive is in the Stealth tree though and this guy is almost all Fighter & Brawn. You do use the same pool of weapons and gear for new characters which makes it easier when you already have some recruit gear bought and your primary weapon upgraded to tier 4/5. Also, the gear selection for Grunt (lvl 3-4) is pretty slim but I noticed that if you keep buying Grunt cases, it'll just give you Veteran gear for $1,000 less than a Vet case #HomefrontLifeHacks

As noted Shadow of Chernobyl was better than HL2. However, HL2 is marginally better than Chernobyl Commando.

Am I saying that Monster Challenge Circus is better than Half Life 2?  Maybe, maybe not.  I can say that Monster Challenge Circus doesn't have a boat sequence more tedious and clock-murderingly dull than 7th period algebra.  So draw your own conclusions.

And here I've been paying extra for the Vet crates like a chump. Thanks for the tip!

Something about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic makes me slightly queasy. I think it's the weird momentum of the movement and the tilting camera. Stupid Source engine.

HL2: 0
Other games: 1

3D Realms Anthology?
Yessir. Bought a gift copy when the store removal was announced - it was 75% off ($9.99), then some days later it was in a BS Killer Bundle w/ other games for just $5.

My only other refund was in the 2015 summer sale (bought Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, but later realized bundle w/ Blood Dragon and CoJ: Gunslinger was a better deal). Didn't install/play or even view my uPlay key for Blood Dragon before requesting a refund.

And I agree, I only ever played the deathmatch for Doom on bronight, and sure, it's fun, but it's just deathmatch.
Doom 2016 MP is NOT anything special. While Team Deathmatch w/ the Demon Rune where you can become a Demon can be fun and the FFA Addition really helps improve Doom 2016's MP Component a bit - it's the SP Campaign where the game really shines and is one of the best FPS S{ campaigns in quite a long time; since FEAR 1 + HL2, IMHO.

It's the Doom 2016 SP Campaign, which is fantastic - and a complete throwback to the old-style of shooters w/ also a mixture of some very light ARPG upgrading elements. Plus - the game plays great, looks great, and is a complete blast. There hasn't been anything like this in years - and it even pushes this style of gameplay forward with its light ARPG upgrading elements.

EDIT:

Can someone tell MysterD that I said Homefront: The Revolution was better than the Half-Life and Portal series, not Doom (2016). That said I've played a lot more of HF:TR than I have of Doom so far so it really has drawn me into it more than Doom did. Not calling Doom a bad game, but the Doom demons are just generic demons while the enemies in HF:TR are clearly dirty NorKs who deserve death due to their national origin. Make NorKs Dead Again!
HF: TR's SP Campaign is just not on HL + Portal's level; sorry. SP Campaigns for HL1, HL2, and Portal are superb games that pretty much reinvented + set trends w/ the way they set-up their world, setting, story, and character development. Other games have blatantly copied what Valve's games have actually brought to the table, while Valve's games (like HL1+2 and Portal) have stood the test of time.

HF: TR is not even on Far Cry 3+4's level here, since HF:TR pretty much copies the open-world FPS style of conquering areas on a map that UbiSoft has brought to the table on most of their open-world games. HF:TR has a few spins on conquering lands + areas w/ having stealth areas and all, but it's still basically the UbiSoft blueprint that they used in many of their games + obviously what AC:S has so you can take-over complete areas on the map to advance the main-story at some point. HF: TR doesn't bring very much really new to the table for the open-world FPS, other than the interesting gun-piece swapping out on-the-fly stuff.

Halo: Combat Evolved.
The most overrated FPS of all time, IMHO.

Finally, consoles got a decent FPS (that they could finally get down with b/c Bungie figured out how to make FPS's work w/ a gamepad) - but on the PC, it's just another average FPS. The first half of the game was really good, actually w/ its variety of gameplay (sniping areas, straight-up shootouts, vehicle-based areas, etc) - but it's right once The Flood hits that the game loses its variety of different types of levels; the repetitious Monitor cut + paste levels; and backtracking galore that keep the game away from being anything special and almost ruin the game entirely.

EDIT:

I'll take numerous FPS games over Halo: CE. Give me FEAR 1; Doom 2016; Bioshock 1 + Bioshock Infinite; HL1+2; Gears of War 1; Metro 2033 + Last Light; Deus Ex 1 + Human Revolution; Quake 2; RTCW; Wolfenstein 2009; Wolf: TNO; RAGE; STALKER: SoC + CoP; etc etc. That's just for starters here; I'm sure there's others I'd take over Halo 1.

The same thing can be said for any/all other FPS games ever made. You didn't need to get a stick up your ass about it.

Half Life had just as many awful parts to add to the good bits not to mention the story/character was inspired by a horrible Charlie Sheen film.

What's your pick for "best game of 2016" so far?
A lady never shares her secrets!

Just kidding. Dark Souls 3 is my pick

By the way, did anyone else notice that this is a good year for the letter D? We've got DOOM, Dark Souls 3, The Division, Deus Ex: MD, Dishonored 2, The Division, Dingus Forever, and of course MysterD and myself. Let's here it for D!

You must've been one of numerous players killed by Aids.
I too would've hated a game if I died from Aids repeatedly on spawn.

Piss auto-correct but I'll leave it
Ps My gamertag was Aids.
I fuck ing loved Halo CE.
What the hell cag, why is the an ad for my Little Pony. Time to remove from whitelist.
At least show something I'm interested in, like porn.

I didn't play much Halo CE MP on the PC. To me, it wasn't anything special back when it came out.

I liked the vehicles in the MP and the flamethrower - but it still didn't do much for me, IMHO.

[shrug]

Or I could just wait a few months for it to show up in the $1 tier of a future humble bundle.

I'm thinking BTA in a Jumbo bundle first, then a week 2 BTA addition to HIB 18 or 19, then finally a $1 tier in a staff picks filler bundle.

Was that what it was last time?

I kinda want it, but yeah, prime bundle fodder and I know I'm not gonna play it before it shows up in a bundle.

Miscreated update:

Malkan joined Reds and I last night for like a four hour session, most of which was spent failing miserably at getting a boat running. In the process, Reds flipped our ATV and I died in the subsequent explosion which allowed him to loot all my gear from my dead body. Reds also put the fuel in the inventory of the boat at one point instead of the slot clearly marked fuel, causing us to crash the boat and strand it on the shore. We then destroyed the boat trying to push it into the water again.

11/10 would play don't let Reds kill you simulator again...

If you want it get technical it would be:

Add it to exclusion list for idle

Download it

Play it for 40 minutes some night when I'm tired but want to play a game

Add it to my favorite list so I don't forget that I really want to play it

Play some HoGs in memory of Motoki

Get the next game I "REALLY WANT TO PLAY"

Play that for 40 minutes or so

Repeat last two steps a few times

Finally give up and idle it in a few months.

So Forza Horizon 3 had an online event this weekend (Still does technically.)  Its for different horns, cosmetic junk, but I figured I wanted them and that it didn't seem that hard to get.

One was for using a D class (before upgrades) car in any online adventure mode and two other horns are available for completing 5 games (each) of infection and flag.  There not horrible modes, mindless really, but between load times (which are far far FAR longer as your waiting for consoles to shit out data), never joining a set of events in the beginning to see what game types are coming (and not being informed at any point after this) made for a lot of wasted time and it took far, far, far too long to get this shit done...  Oh!  Lets not forget the option search for games only is buried in the menus and not available via their dashboard navigation system (Anna) that they want you to use in single player.   Just ugh.  So much wasted time.  I was long past not having fun and only stuck it out because of all the time I had already invested.

The racing (not the games) isn't horrible...  Its not really great as its got a fair share of lag...  and its checkpoint based and far too many people will just ram you off course so you miss a checkpoint.  Missing a checkpoint pretty much kills all chances of winning...  So, yeah, while not horrible its easily the weakest link.

Oh, and muting people is a huge pain in the ass...  You can do it via the Xbox App, and you will want too, as the only way to do it in game on Windows 10 is when you should be driving.  (Meaning your losing.)

That said...  I think the online modes could be a ton of fun with friends and I'm sure the bros will get a kick out of it when they get to it. :)

ROFL..

MysterD, Halo CE MP is where all the funs are at. LAN night with HALO CE was one of the best MP experience I have ever played.

From what you described up there, sound like you only tried half the Halo experience (the single player campaign)

add Digital Homicide to the list, why don't you? :whistle2:

Yeah Halo LAN parties were the shit.  I was living in my fraternity house at the time and we played up to 16 people in four different bedrooms over the network.  It was revolutionary back in 2001.   One of the best gaming periods of my life.

not to mention it ran like ass on a PC that was twice as fast as any console the game ran on. Any map with a lot or ramps and your pc would crawl. Halo was an insult to the PC. All the hype buildup for a year, yanked at the 11th hour for the xbox and all we get is a crappy port. Oh boy, another hexagon to clear out.

MP didn't really do much for me. I played a little bit of it - and I wasn't thrilled with it. While I did like the flamethrower + vehicles - eh, wasn't really doing much for me.

For MP components - I'll take Q2; Q3A + TA; CoD4: MW; many of the recent CoD MP's (except Ghosts); Battlefield BC2+BF3; RTCW + ET; and any of the UT MP's over Halo CE any day. Sorry. [shrug]

I can't speak on Halo 2 MP on PC, since I never got that.

Would be nice if Halo MCC would hit the PC...

Yep; Halo CE PC ran like garbage back in the day on my PC, also. Certainly wasn't the best of ports, to say the very least. Disappointing campaign (thanks to the terrible 2nd half of the campaign); not-so-spectacular MP; and poor PC performance led to one of the most disappointing PC ports of all time.

too busy playing good LAN games like quake 3 and its mods or Wolfenstein.

I wonder how many of you that are in love with Halo were around to play Quake and Unreal Tournament when those games came out?

That's the real revolution of the multiplayer first person shooter, right there. :twoguns:

Do Steam free weekends always end in the middle of the day on Sunday? Was playing Sniper Elite 3 last night and was kinda surprised the free weekend was over when I woke up today (yes, I woke up in the afternoon). Overall I thought the game was pretty good. Who doesn't like sniping things? Especially Nazis! The AI is a bit retarded. Not sure if I will buy it. Was going to wait for a good sale at Putingate but that is dead =(.

Yes, it's why I always ignore the free weekends. (It really should run to Monday... Just like the sale.)
