Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

Card drops earned: 6
Drops earned by purchasing the game: 4
Drops earned by purchasing DLC: 2

Seems like Aerena has added more card drops, might be worth a check. (Early owners from BM bundle or gift from that bundle, which previously got zero drops)
I just looked and there are 2 drops, thanks for the heads up. I previously got zero drops.

So remember that a long time ago we got a game called 'Galactic Arms Race' in BeMine Anniversary?

Well, the game is now available on Steam. I went to the store page to check it out and the site says I don't own it. So I look at my game list and it says that I have "Galactic Arms Race (Test)."

I fear the worst. I made a thread here now that the forum is open.

Can someone in the know please make sense of the Magic 2014 Gold Complete edition for me? I think I want it, but I want to be sure.  I don't care about foil conversions, but any gameplay enhancements are well worth having, especially since Krugozor has it for $5.50.  It appears there are some sealed deck elements that are not in the incomplete Gold version.

edit: I remember in previous versions of Magic some of the DLC would auto-unlock content that otherwise had to be earned, which ruined the progression of the game.  Would like to avoid that too.

I fear that the Complete pack is the same in the 2014 version as well, unlocking everything before you get a chance to earn it in game. The one nice thing is that Steam now allows you to "turn off" DLC's you don't want, but I'd rather get the cheaper Gold version and not have to worry about micro-managing over 40 pieces of DLC content.

Also, the additional Sealed Slot packs don't appear to be included in the Complete version, so if you're interested, you'd still have to buy those separately.

Do not get Gold Complete. The Gold has everything you could conceivably want. The sealed slots are a horrid way to try to get more money out of customers, and you most likely will be tired of playing sealed way before you are done with your first slot.

Also, here is the link for the mods for that game, which include a deck builder and custom decks and such. Just be aware that once you start modding, you can only play against people using the same mods.

Awesome, thanks guys!

and Wolfenstein (a new release) costs 4 less surveys than Age of Mythology, which makes no sense to me.
In terms of quality... it does make sense. Otherwise, no.

Look at what just popped up on SteamDB...

Oh yeah, now bring it on down to $9.99!

New trailer out for the BL pre-sequel, albeit the Bollywood-type moon dance number is kinda awkward:
As big a fan as I am, it's going to take a pretty incredible pre-order deal for me to bite until it's cheap. The low-grav could be fun and the vehicles might be good for a laugh, but I'm a bit put off by the fact that Gearbox isn't doing it in-house and the trailers haven't exactly been homeruns.

The Galactic Arms Race dev just confirmed that old owners will get the game. Eventually.

Uh yeah, we are gonna try to work that out with Valve. They gave us a new App ID when the game got Greenlighted. Gonna see if migrating the keys we gave out over to the new App ID is possible.

But, it is the exact same game no difference. It kinda sucks though because I don't think the achieves will be public for the test version. ;(
Yay!

Looks like I will be finally picking up SRIV soon.

Dead Rising 3 on PC is official and coming this summer.

edit: Store Page
I am probably in the minority but I enjoy the Dead Rising games quite a bit. I've just been playing through DR2: OTR on pc this past week for the first time. I knew this one would eventually make its way to pc despite them saying it wouldn't initially. I'll probably get this during the winter sale when it will have a big discount.

Thanks, both of you. Used to play M:tG way back in the mid 90's and then got back in this winter when my son started playing with friends from school. I know the video game version is a shadow of actually playing the game (card selection, deck construction, etc) but figured it'd still be fun to try. Saved me $5 from going all out with the "best" looking one.

Guess I wasn't paying attention during previous Enemy Within sales. No biggie, I'll wait for Steam Summer Sale and burn through some GabeN Funbux then.

So if I'm looking for a fun card game to play with someone would you guys recommend MTG or that Hearthstone thing I see people talking about?  Or are they even similar?  I know nothing about card games really, but figured if there's a free option that is good, it can save me some money.  Also, do any or both of these require good graphic cards or can they run on crappy/older ones?

I am probably in the minority as I haven't played a Dead Rising game really. My friend had it on his 360 and I tried it for a few minutes. Looks cool, would like to try one. So, I am excited for DR3 coming to PC.

I know very little about Hearthstone aside from that it's very popular and is similar in theme to Magic: the Gathering (which I guess is similar to most other CCGs). I can say that M:tG 2014 has an Android version so it can't require all that great a graphics card. It's really just moving pictures of cards, no super speed movement or anything.

That was really helpful since I just got a new tablet and they want to get a tablet so maybe the mobile version would be the way to go instead of Steam.

Fixed.

I can use special font colors too.

Awesome. I got all the MTG stuff I didn't have. The Sealed Play pack is a must. Only $5 for all 18 slots? Hell yes. Got for me and the hubby.

Speaking of card games, any impressions of Dead Man's Draw?
No, but I did add it to my cart earlier. Steam reviews seem pretty positive. They mention it's a mobile game, but the transactions have been removed and incorporated into the game through play (not pay).

I want a new card game to hold me over until the end of time Faerie Solitaire 2.

Hearthstone should be able to run on a toaster. MTG DotP 2014 probably would run ok on just about anything if you turn the settings down. It doesn't make sense since it's a card game but it is surprisingly piggy.

Both are fairly easy to learn. Magic is the more complex game, but the DotP series are mainly to try to get people hooked so they switch to playing the real thing so they make damn sure it has a good tutorial and tooltips readily available to explain cards. And by real game I mean coughing up money for physical boosters.

The DotP games are made up of pre-built decks with some unlockable extra cards you can add/swap in to each deck. The base game comes with 10 decks (IIRC) and the expansion and deck packs (A lot of the DLC is just unlocking cards you can unlock through gameplay to adding shiny foil covers to cards. The expansion and the 3 deck packs add actual new playable content) add maybe 9-12ish more. It's perfectly fine to just play, and I play and enjoy the DotP games even though I played Magic a good 20ish years ago, but you don't make your own decks which offends a lot of people. If you're mainly planning on just playing with a friend though that shouldn't really be an issue. The "Gold game" pack has the game, expansion, and all 3 deck packs for $5, and you'll get a HELL of a lot of good gaming out of that pile of decks. It's also worth mentioning that the DotP games have pretty good AI. I almost exclusively just play it against the computer and have a good time.

Hearthstone's a different kettle of fish. It's free to play, and your starting free card pool is generous compared to other F2P card games I've tried (Sol Forge, Duel of Champions) but the pre-built starter decks are atrocious, and what decks you can make even when you're skilled using the free card pool will still get you rolled pretty often. The rate you accumulate gold (The in-game currency for buying packs of cards) is also fairly slow. A pack of cards runs 100 gold, and you'll get one daily quest a day which is most often worth 40 gold, and then you get a 10 gold reward for each set of 3 wins you get in the matchmaker (Doesn't work playing against friends). It's also a much simpler game so learning the basics comes really fast though getting good at it still takes time. Since it's built around getting a card collection you do end up making your own decks (Especially because as mentioned the pre-built decks are really awful) which is fun, but getting a card collection rolling as a fresh newbie to card games could be really rough without dumping money on it. And while DotP has entertaining AI to play against, Hearthstone's AI is braindead and doesn't give you the gold rewards which you need to get more cards.

Also worth mentioning Hearthstone has a draft mode. You'll get viciously beaten in it as a new player but it's the best way to get more cards once you start getting good at it. It's called the "Arena", and runs you 150 gold to enter. You're then offered 3 random heroes and have to pick one, and then are offered 3 random cards (All the same rarity) 30 times until you have a deck, then you play until you reach 12 wins or 3 losses, whichever comes first. The more wins, the better your prizes. You don't keep any of the cards you selected during the draft once that arena run is done, that deck is ONLY for that run, but you always get a pack of cards (Which is worth 100 gold anyway) no matter what, so even a 0-3 arena run only costs 50 more gold than just buying a pack straight up. And once you get around 3-5 wins you'll often get at least 50 gold with the pack, and 7 wins is the minimum threshold to get 150 gold and a pack, which basically just means a free pack. Again, this is more difficult to learn than the normal game since you have to learn how to play well/anticipate the cards your opponent might have, AND get the different skillset of drafting a decent deck. Sometimes you'll just get shit on with poor draft offerings but you can still work around it.

TLDR: I'd say pick up DotP. You can still poke at Hearthstone after, but DotP is $5 for all the actual playable content in it and the pile of decks that it comes with should last a good while. Despite Hearthstone being the simpler game it has a higher barrier to entry because of having to play against other people who've been playing for months in order to get the gold you need to start getting more cards.

Edit: Yeah, just looked it up. DotP comes with 10 decks in the vanilla game, then the expansion and 3 deck packs add 11 more.

Hearthstone. Just, give it a chance, then watch your it devour all your imagined free time. Really, it's fantastic, coming from someone who tried and failed to get into Magic and traditionally doesn't care a ton for CCG (though I always wanted to).

Also you can play with me, so by default it has to be better!

Also worth mentioning Hearthstone has a draft mode.
DoTP has sealed decks, which are similar to draft, but you're locked to only 2 (unless you buy 18 more slots, NOT included in the Gold Edition). For anyone who plays TCGs with any heart, draft or 'booster' is the only way to play. It tests your skill at deck building on the fly, and it keeps you from getting rolled by people who just make broken cookie-cutter decks. It's a ton of fun for a low entry cost.

It should also be noted that DoTP is controller friendly. For $5 though, you should pick it up, it's probably simply the best way to learn MTG (whose BASIC rules haven't changed, pretty much ever, unlike D&D).

Edit: Also what is dead may never die squirrel. And Baby McDickface is all up ruining my CAG time.

I really wish Enemy Within would go on a better than 50% off sale. Folks say it really makes Enemy Unknown better and I've put off playing EU for it because I know I won't go back and replay it once I move on. But EW refuses to go on a good discount so I just don't play any of it.
EW changed the game so much that it is a different beast to play. You will miss out a lot on the X-com experience if you chose to skip EU. I would suggest do a playthrough of EU & you will appreciate EW much more.

Besides Hearthstone, Steam has a free to play MTG clone in Early Access, Infinity Wars. I've played a few hours of it several months ago and it was pretty fun though buggy at the time. The AI can be a little cheap sometimes, and even the harder tutorials can be very frustrating, but it may have been improved and patched since then. There are many similarities to MTG but with enough differences to make it unique. (e.g.: no basic land cards to play (automatically +1 in mana pool every turn), choosing 3 'captain' cards for instant summon, separate zones for attack, defense, and standby / summoning sickness) The latter introduces some wrinkles in gameplay like bluffing strategies. By the end of the single player campaign, you'll have a playable deck for each faction. They do have a real money store for card boosters and decks, but you get a lot of cards playing the main story, daily quests and different events (as well as free Infinity Points to spend in the store for doing them) so it doesn't seem pay-to-win unless you're trying to be competitive in multiplayer.

I play it on the ipad and its pretty good. not too indepth, good for quick games, though the in game purchases can get a bit annoying at times because some matches seem to really try to push you to do it with how they end up based in luck part of the time

I just grabbed it for the pc though since I imagine liking it even more with out the in game crap. May sound a bit down on it but I do really like it on the tablet

For hearthstone vs dotp, Id side on the side of dotp. For me it just involves much more strategy and just a more engrossing game overall. For 5$ if I was looking at a card game it would be a no brainer

Could you (or another DotP 2014 familiar CAG) explain the whole Sealed Play thing?

Reading different forum posts and the like, it looks like you're locked in to the cards you get each time for sealed play. So if I'm understanding this correctly, I could only ever draft 20 times (if i were to buy all the sealed slots) before it's simply not an option anymore? Resetting the status of a slot isn't an option?

Am I correct in understanding people's complaints?

I am new to the card game scene and didn't quite get why some ppl would recommend me to get the Gold version versus the Gold Complete Version for DotP. Furtherly added to my confusion, I was then told that the Gold Complete version is not really "complete". so what would a completist in me should buy, if I try the game this weekend for free, like it and want to purchase it?

The big difference is:

Gold (not-complete): All of the pre-constructed deck DLC. (New decks to play that weren't in the original release)

Gold "Complete": Same as Gold, but with instant-unlocks on the in-game decks (rather than having to unlock them via playing) and cosmetic foil cards.

In terms of gameplay experience, Gold Complete doesn't really add anything over Gold.

The difference is "GOLD GAME" has all the actual game content. The base game, the expansion, and the additional decks added as DLC.

The "GOLD COMPLETE" pack seems to (It's 40+ pieces of crap, don't feel like eyeballing every last one) have all the actual game content (The game, expansion, additional decks) as well as the "Spend money to avoid playing the game" and cosmetic DLC.

As an example to clarify it a bit better Deck Pack 1 is actual game content. It adds two new decks (Bounce and Boon, and Unfinished Business) for you/the AI to play.

The "Bounce and Boon deck key" is DLC to unlock cards by spending money instead of playing the game. Every deck has something like 10-20 additional cards you unlock while playing that deck, which are completely optional and can be added/swapped with other cards in the deck. Basically you want to play the vanilla deck first to get an idea of how the deck handles, then you can tweak it to suit your playstyle/your opponent using the unlocked cards.

The "Bounce and Boon foil conversion" is cosmetic DLC. All that does is it makes the cards in that deck shiny. That's it.

Basically there are 4 pieces of real DLC for the game (Expansion, deck packs 1 2 and 3) and mountains and mountains of shit. Even as a completionist I'd say go "Gold game" over "Gold complete".

This is something I'm very much trying to figure out myself. (See my post above, aimed at utopian) So far though, all signs are pointing to "no", as they are supposedly a blatant microtransaction cash grab on Wizard's part.

If you're completely new to card games I'd say start with Hearthstone.
That said, they have the free weekends for a reason. Try playing Magic 2014 for a few days and if you like it, buy it on Sunday. If you don't, don't.

I don't know how the computer and the physical version align, but the physical 2015 set of Magic: the Gathering comes out on July 17th. This sale might be them getting their last hurrah in for the 2014 set. That won't make it less playable for someone just playing the computer version though I don't know how long the DLC packs will be available. Any M:tG Duels of the Plainswalkers 2013 players want to weigh in?

The only "card" game on Steam I've ever played (or anywhere else for that matter) is Card City Nights! :D/ :D/ :D/

Hah... does that even count?
