I don't see why any 'shoving' needs to occur. spuffin was just explaining why Valve wants to restrict that kind of gifting to certain Valve products.

I think a path that Valve
could take is one exemplified by a
current GOG sale:
A five-game pack for about 30% off. Already have some of the games because you were a good customer and paid full value? Fine, you can complete your pack with the remaining games at 30% off.
To do that, however, instead of just grouping 10 indie games and pricing it simply at $29.99. They would have to do like GOG and apply a % discount to all the games to determine their sale value (even though the sale only applies to the pack purchase). This would probably lead to even more complaints for the games to be on sale individually, but I think its much better than the current quasi-punishment for early buyers.
That being said, I'm on the fence here. I've got Audiosurf and Goo. Plus Gish and Mr. Robot on Impulse.
