Stores selling Nintendo DS early? (YMMV)

Matt Wilson

I've heard on other forums that Nintendo shipped the Nintendo DS a week early and some stores are prepared to put them on shelves on the 16th or 17th (one person said their Best Buy was selling it on the 17th, another said the Target ad for next week features the DS on sale). Can anyone confirm this? This may not be a "Deal" per se but I think it would be a great opportunity for people who didn't get to pre-order, to grab a system before they're all gone (the "official" release date is the 23rd).

Some stores will, but then run out or it will just be a few stores of a chain and won't be that big of a deal.
This is a question and general question.. should be in the deals and discussions board..
It also pertains to a portable gaming device, I think it's just fine here.

I'm very excited about the DS, and am glad it's coming out sooner than expected, I'm hoping to pick this up at BB, so hopefully they'll be selling early.

ign reports it can be sold as early as the 15th, cuase ebgames (or gamestop, i forgot) has been reporting that

Your Mileage May Vary.

We should keep a close watch on this early release thing. I'd love to have a DS days before everyone else.

I will check with the EB manager I know personally about this. I have one preordered but he will at least tell me if they are getting them early and when they will go on sale.

Drag your mouse over the acronym and it will tell you what it means. There are a couple of acros that have been programmed to do that here. Also, in case that doesn't help, Your Mileage May Vary means that your store may or may not have the same deals as another store somewhere else.

it is supposed to have a street date of the 21st. that is the earliest it should be sold and if any of them get reported they will probably pay a hefty fine for that. on a side not, we have half-life 2 in early, so if you wanted that you might want to try best buy or wal-mart since i hear they usually break street dates more often. not positive if they will have it in yet since i work at gamestop, but we had a street dated box in the back and i asked what it was and i was told it was half-life 2 by the assistant manager.

Well, I checked with Nintendo since I work in retail and did not want to lose sales to Gamestop. Here is their reply which would indicate some places will sell before the 16th.

Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

Just to let you know, the release date for the Nintendo DS is still November 21st. However, regarding when you can actually sell it, you will need to contact your corporate headquarters for that information.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Nintendo of America Inc.

we won't be selling before the 21st is my guess. go on and beat us in sales, i am mad at gamestop anyways. i hope we lose sales to lots of people. my district manager is really strict about things, so this will probably be one of them.

hmm... target is getting DS'es this coming week too, but it's been very clear that the DS is street dated for the 21st... at least for us. eh, makes no matter to me. as of recently...

i bought san andreas first day, had no time to play it.

i bought halo 2 first day, had no time to play it.

my guess is, if i bought the DS on the first day, i wouldn't have time to play it. do these things really sell out that first week? the last time i came across something that was hard to find in my area was tales of symphonia, and i pretty much ended up not liking the game.

Well games are not as prone to selling out as systems are. I remember looking for the Gamecube the November it came out and all of the shelves at Best Buy were empty.

all the pre-orders at gamestop all across my region at least are out of the system since all of the pre-orders have been filled. it is going to sell out probably first day because of christmas coming it is going to be one of those hot gifts. if you bought it and you were looking to make some money quick, you could ebay it since they wont be in the store.

i doubt that any are, but good luck on finding one. i think that nintendo had them taken out of all the places that were doing pre-orders. i think they got all of them filled up so they couldn't fill anymore.
EB World is still taking preorders last I saw.

I think they are the only ones left.
EB is still taking pre-orders but there's a note that says "any orders recieved after Nov. 11 will not be shipped on Nov. 21". So who knows how long you'll have to wait for one. I'm going to check CC this week to see if they put any out early, just realized I have a $150 giftcard for there and now I'm just praying I can get a DS. This is one instance where I should have pre-ordered.

Oh..

Well if you ordered it from them, before the 11th some maybe good rumour news....

EB DS Early Release
Posted At: 05:11 | Posted By: Quasar
It seems that EB Games is going to jump the gun and release the Nintendo DS early. They plan on selling them on the 16th; 5 days early!

The info came from the Official Nintendo forums with a forum goer quoting an employee from EB making the statement.

Quote from employee:

"Just found out the official word, the systems will be sold on the 16th of this month. This is official from the corporate offices of EB Games, I as an employee, wondered why. Then I checked with my DM (District Manager) and was told Wal-Mart, Target, and all the big conglomerates are jumping the gun. Thus, the rest of the retail industry will unlock the DS.

Unfortunately Nintendo inevitably knows this, according to our Nintendo rep, who was in today speaking on the new DS kiosk, and SWEET SWEET SWEET DS package kit they sent us. Ohhhhh so pretty. It's a DS shirt that makes the E3 ones look like Master Chief without his helmet on! I'll be sure to upload some pics tomorrow. Ah, but back to my topic. I'm just stating that Nintendo is very much the wiser. And knew that a holiday item as this would break street. Thus, the gates have been unlocked. Look for a nation-wide release on the sixteenth."

So far this is all rumor but we will check with EB games to find out for sure. Stay here at Ningc for all the latest Nintendo DS news.

^ That's interesting. Seems Nintendo isn't screwing around on this one, which can only be good for their sales. I'll definitely be at my CC on the 16th, and hopefully I'll have some luck.

Traded Jak II and 3 for the deposit of a DS... the associate said that they heard NOTHING of breaking the street date on the 16th. I mean, not to throw caution to the wind, but why would all the major retailers break a street date for something (a major holiday seller in fact) not even advertised in their circulars? On paper, you might get word of mouth or that curious shopper, but trust me, if I know any better, they are going to keep the date as it is, which is the 21st... Nintendo and their wonky release dates... :x and with the person who said they had to traade cd's and DVD's, me personally am unloading a few PS2 games for it, and some of them will put me over the top for the system... since most of the ones I'm trading are new/recent releases and trade value is likely in the high teens/low twenties (in the case of GTA, I'd even say $30 just for it alone), I just need to sacrifice some for it and Mario 64 DS. After all, a lot of these games I can just pick up again later in the future for a much cheaper rate...

actually, GTA and Fable are going in (thats $80 right there) as well as some others....i wont be playing them anytime soon, so i can just wait on those ad get the DS now (which i can use at work)

I've done all the GTA's like this: play them till I tire of them and trade them off early for the most value... but I eventually get them again later... and by the way, my Fable got traded off like 2 weeks after it came out. And I don't miss it, at all. And lookyloo... it's on sale at BB for $34.99. I smell a universal price drop before the end of the year (maybe)....
Why the hell are people so fast to say you are in the wrong forum my god who the hell cares
Because it keeps the site organized...Imagine if many people began to post the wrong stuff in the wrong forms, it'd be a mess.

i called up all 3 ebgames 2 gamestops and 3 gamecrazy and all 3 said they will not sell before 11/21... they plan on getting them in stock this week but wont sell them till the 21

I went to a Best Buy today and was told that even if they had them in early, which they will, they can't sell the DS earlier than the 21st because their computer system won't let them. I'm almost positive that will be the same with Walmart.

has anyone seen the ds in action at bestbuy? i went tonight and had a look and was disappointed in the screen brightness. i thought this thing was going to be backlit like sega game gear. instead it is almost the same brightness and clarity as the nintendo sp. did anyone else notice this? were my expectations too high?

What is wrong with the way the SP light?

If they get a brighter light then it will have the same battery time as the PSP.

i dont find the type of lighting/screen on the sp and ds to look very crisp or bright. another downside is that it actually looks worse in daylight than it does it the dark. its fine for in the dark though, but i cant play my sp in the car because the screen gets completely washed out.

i was just expecting something reallly more advanced i guess. when i heard it was going to be backlit, i was honestly expecting the thing to look bright and crisp on the screen like a game gear or nomad.

It's not backlite, it's like side lite or something.

The reason why it's not brighter is because otherwise the battery life will really go down.

on the ebgames description it says "Each 3-inch screen can reproduce a true 3-D view and is backlit to assure comfortable play in any lighting condition. "

but i can understand the need to keep battery life longer. im just glad i got to see this thing in action instead of buying it blind after reading the information because i had an entirely different idea of what i thought backlit meant.

I should ask for one for christmas, this is a bit off topic, but does anyone know when the PSP is going to be released.

Doesn't street date and release date mean 2 seperate things?
Street Date: meaning I know it's at the store let me go get one. (who releases new items on a Sunday anyway?)
Release date: Meaning do not sell before this date.

i was the last of the 5 people able to reserve at the gamerush nearby. The computer said it would be out sept 27 (the compter is apparently a bit off...)

When I played it, the lighting seemed great. I really loved it, and if I wasn't sold before on the DS, I certainly am now.

Release/Shipping Date = Day the game is "released" which usually means the games leaves the warehouse on this day and can be sold immediately on delivery to the stores. Can also mean that games shipped early cannot be sold untill this day. This is many times open for interpretation.

Street Date = The day most stores will actually start selling the game because they may have received the delivery yesterday for intended sale on on the "release date."
